Hyper-V 2016 VMs stuck 'Creating checkpoint 9%' while starting backups

We have a two clustered W2016 Hyper-V hosts, every couple of days one of the hosts gets stuck when the backup kicks off. In Hyper-V manager the VMs all say 'Creating checkpoint 9%' It's always the same percentage 9%. You can't cancel the operation and the VMMS service refuses to stop, the only way to get out of the mess is to shutdown the VMs, and hard reset the effected node. The backup works for a few days then it all starts again.

The only events I can see on the effected node is:

Event ID: 19060 source: Hyper-V-VMMS

'VMName' failed to perform the 'Creating Checkpoint' operation. The virtual machine is currently performing the following operation: 'Creating Checkpoint'.

Can anybody help please? Cluster validation is clean. Hosts and guests are patched up.

Manage Hyper-V Core Cluster Workgroup (without domain): "List Disks" failed with "The remote procedure call failed"

Hello.

Before writing I have read hundreds of posts, articles, ... and I have enabled all the permissions/parameters to permit the connection without domain.

I have installed an Hyper-V 2019 Core Cluster Workgroup (without domain): it functions perfectly.

I can connect to the nodes with Hyper-V Manager from my PC (in domain).

But when I try to connect to the cluster with Failover Cluster Manager:

  • the name in the tree has a red down arrow
  • the cluster status is "Down"
  • the cluster service status is "Running" for all nodes

If I run a Validation Test, I have the following error: "List Disks" failed with "The remote procedure call failed" and in the Event Viewer I have the error 81 "LogExtendedErrorInformation (974): Extended RPC error information:".

Thank you in advance for your support.

Best.
Alessandro

VM Replication of VHDS (Shared VHDX)

$

Is it supported in Windows 2016 or 2019 to perform VM replication of virtual machines with a shared VHDX (VHDS) on either standalone Hyper-V servers or Hyper-V Failover Clusters?

I've seen this question asked elsewhere, but as of yet, I am not clear on the answer. There have been postulations and attempts to implement it using WMI and/or VM Groups, but no definitive answer or documentation that I have seen yet.

This is the missing piece for us to be able to run a guest cluster with shared storage and replicate it to our DR site. Storage replication is not a great fit for us at this time because we are selectively choosing only certain virtual machines to replicate on the same storage.

Could I ask the Microsoft technical team to weigh in on whether or not this is supported? If it is, how can it be implemented? If not supported, is it something that is on the roadmap for Windows Server in the future?

Hello team,

I need your urgent help please, I've tried to start VM machine under Hyper V Windows 2008 R2 but always fail with below error.

it was working on the beginning then suddenly get stopped. even more I tried to create a new VHD machine but fail to initiate it with the same error. checked the bios settings for the physical server, increased memory for the virtual machine, followed up all tips I found in google but no luck.

cannot start Hyper-V virtual machine

Hi,

I have a Windows 2008 Server. It has been now upgraded to Windows 2012. Everything was working fine. But, now I turned off the virtual machine and copied the VHD file to another drive for backup. After this, I am not able to start the old virtual machine. (The VHDs are in place. I only copied them) However, two another virtual machines are running now without any problem. While trying to start, I am getting the error "the operation cannot be performed while the object is in its current state". These are critical server. Any quick thoughts?

Thanks

VM recommended configurations?

It's been a while I played around with Virtual PC/Server as it was called in the day. It's Hyper-V now and that's what I want to use to get two VM's running as a replacement for two SBS 2011 servers. So we bought a fairly 'fat' server - a Dell Poweredge R7415, sporting an AMD Epyc 7281, 64 GB RAM, BOSS-card (240 GB configured in RAID1), three 960 GB SSD's configured in RAID5, six 2 TB near-line SAS drives configured in RAID5 and four 1 Gbit network adapters.

What we need is a fileserver/domain controller and Exchange server. So we bought Windows Server 2016 and Exchange 2016. Windows Core is to be installed on the BOSS-card. The virtual domain controller / file server uses the near-line SAS drives to store it's virtual disk. The virtual Exchange server uses the SSD's to store it's virtual disk.

Installing Hyper-V is pretty much a no-brainer. As is creating a new VM. But both VM's and the host have to be configured for optimal performance. So I read the MS documentation for Hyper-V, but can't find anything about recommended configurations. I broadened the search to the internet, but that's no luck either. Tons of websites describing how to install Hyper-V and create VM's but there it stops.

Could be I searched the wrong way, so please point me in the right direction. Or maybe recommend how to configure both VM's like how many RAM I should allocate, what to do with the network settings - do I tie them all to the virtual switch or do bind them directly to the VM's etc.

Hyper-V manager will not start VM-- timed out

I am using windows pro 10 on a home AD domain. The manager creates and verifies the VM files easily, but will not start any of the VMs. The errors (in the event log) only show "timed out". I have added myself (and I am a domain administrator) to the Hyper-V administrator group on the computer, turned off Norton AV and firewall, disabled Windows Defender, ran the manager as an elevated app and regularly. Still no joy. I see this issue quite a bit in the forum. Does anyone have an idea how to proceed. I also have checked the hardware requirements for Hyper-V and this machine passes.

Hyper-V on Windows 10 PC and setting up shared storage to create a DFS cluster

I have created two servers in the Hyper-V of my windows 10 machine. I want to set up DFS cluster (and down the line I plan to deploy two more server to create SQL cluster with Always On group).

However, I am not able to create the lab scenario because of lack of shared storage. Is there a way to create a virtual disk and then share it with both servers? I tried it but once one VM locks it the other won't have access.

Anyway insight to get this going would be appreciated very much!

Hyper-V Querries Slow Outside VM

My PC/Host Machine:

  • PC
  • Windows 10 PRO
  • 64GB
  • Xeon Processor
  • Quadro 9000
  • Dinky Little Thumb Driver Wifi Adapter

The VM:

  • 8GB RAM
  • 4 Virtual Processors
  • Hardware Acceleration > Virtual Machine Queue: Set to Off/Disabled
  • Windows Server 2012 R2

All setup on my local PC, no external networking should be required. When I connect to the VM thru the Hypervisor RDP window or via Teamviewer, my Oracle database queries are nice and fast.

However when I do those same queries from the host machine, they tend to run slow at first, like if the device has been sitting a while. They sometimes get fast too... the speed measurement seems to putter like a muffler or something. Sometimes its way to slow, like 2 minutes to retrieve 10 simple database rows... I've tested on the VM and on the host machine the same query simultaneously, the VM is less than .1 seconds to respond, the host machine is long, minutes.

VQM seemed like the most likely cause so I disabled it. The interwebs also recommended disabling it on the physical network adapter, but the setting is found there on this dinky little USB Wifi Adapter.

Any help is appreciated

Hyper-V Role Management tools

Help!!

For the past month I have been trying to fix an issue that I have been having with my Hyper-V role management tools.

When I attempt to open any of my virtual machines under Failover Cluster Management the error message that I am getting is :

“The Hyper-V role management tools are not installed, you can install by opening Server Manager and installing either the Hyper-V role, or expanding the “Remote Server Administration Tools” feature and installing “Hyper-V management tools in failover cluster manager”

Note: The tools and features are already installed as well as the failover clustering and Remote Server Administrator.

Any help would be amazing!! Thank you

389 UDP not responding from outside Hyper-V

$

Hey guys,

I created two new VMs with domain controller role on a HyperV-Host. All Servers are installed with Windows Server 2016.

The domain controllers are working as expected, but I can't add clients from outside Hyper-V. VMs on the same HyperV-Host can join the domain as well.

I tested the connectivity with PortQuery and got an error on port 389 UDP. Same test on an non-domain-member VM on Hyper-V-Host is still successful.

PortQuery-Error (executed on my local PC):

UDP port 389 (unknown service): LISTENING or FILTERED

Using ephemeral source port
Sending LDAP query to UDP port 389...

LDAP query to port 389 failed
Server did not respond to LDAP query

The request has been executed with the domain controllers IPv4 address, not FQDN. Same result with disabled firewall on DC.

IPv6 is configured on HyperV and all VMs and working.

I spent a lot of time for Google-searching for a solution, but I only found some solutions with disabling IPv6, but I dont want to disable IPv6.

Maybe I do have to change some settings for HyperV-Switch? Or add static routes on HyperV? The configuration of the DC should be correct, because connections are successfull from other VMs, I think.

Thanks for your help!

Visual Studio Professional Subscription - Hyper-V core licensing

Hi

I have a Visual Studio Professional subscription which allows me to download and use Windows Server 2016/2019 Standard or DataCentre edition. I would like to test Hyper-V on my homelab server which is equipped with 2 CPU's which have 8 cores each.  For testing purpose do I need to purchase a 16 core license if I was to use the DataCentre edition or the core license is not required when testing / using a Visual Studio Professional subscription ?

Kind regards,

New server with Hyper-V need to use USB Modem

We are installing a new fileserver with Server 2019. Planning on using 2 VMs, one with AD and filesharing and the other with Exchange. My problem is that I need to run some software that uses a USB fax modem. Does Server 2019 still not support a USB device such as a modem in the guest vm? What are my best options?

Thanks,

Dale

Stay logged in to vm after disconnecting from server?

$

I have 2 GUI based programs running on Windows 10 in a Hyper-v machine that are constantly being automated by a third program. I would like to have this process continue running after I disconnect from the machine but disconnecting causes the machine to go into the locked state. This causes the automation software to fail because functions like "SetForegroundWindow" fail without there being an active desktop session.

Is there any way to accomplish this without having to leave a second machine connected to the server 24/7?

Virtual machine located on a removable drive

I have a virtual machine located on a removable drive. This drive sleeps when not in use for an extended period of time. If Hyper-V Manager is started when the drive is asleep, Manager reports that the virtual machine state is "Off-critical". OK, but when the drive spins up a couple of seconds later, it takes up to two minutes for Manager to figure it out and update the VM status to "Off". Is there a way to speed up the polling cycle to minimize the time it takes for Manager to recognize the updated state of the drive?

How to set the two parameters of 'Member' and 'Collection' when using AddMember()?

$

Hi, everyone, how do you set the parameters when using the Msvm_CollectionManagementService::AddMember() function?

According to the MSDN documentation(AddMember), it says: The 'Member' parameter means: A reference to the managed element to add. The 'Collection' parameter means: A reference to the collection that receives the managed element. I am really Do not understand, how should this parameter be set?

My code snippet:

VARIANT var;
BSTR paramName4 = L"Member";
//var.vt = VT_BYREF | VT_UNKNOWN;
//var.ppunkVal = (IUnknown**)&m_pComputerSystem;
//var.vt = VT_BYREF;
//var.byref = (PVOID)m_pComputerSystem;
//var.vt = VT_UNKNOWN;
//var.punkVal = (IUnknown*)pInClass;
var.vt = VT_BSTR;

var.bstrVal = _bstr_t(_vmName.c_str()); //_vmName, the virtual machine name

hresult = pInClass->Put(paramName4,
0,
&var,
0);
if (FAILED(hresult))
{
string msg = "Failed to set property.";
throw std::exception(msg.c_str());
}

BSTR paramName5 = L"Collection";
//var.vt = VT_BYREF | VT_UNKNOWN;
//var.ppunkVal = (IUnknown**)&collectionName;
//var.vt = VT_BYREF;
//var.byref = (PVOID)collectionName;
//var.vt = VT_UNKNOWN;
//var.punkVal = (IUnknown*)pInClass->QueryInterface(&collectionName);
var.vt = VT_BSTR;
var.bstrVal = _bstr_t(_collectionName.c_str()); // _collectionName, the collection name

//invoke method
hresult = m_pWbemServices->ExecMethod(
var.bstrVal,
methodName2,
0,
NULL,
pInClass,
&pOutClass,
NULL);
if (FAILED(hresult))
{
string msg = "Failed to invoke method.";
throw std::exception(msg.c_str());
}

Next I call the AddMember() method and the CreateSnapshot() method, and the return value is S_OK, but unfortunately, I don't see the new snapshot generation or .rct file generation.

Please give me some guidance, cheers
