Live Migrations No Longer Working After January 2019 Updates

We have a problem after the January updates (50 plus blades with AMD Bulldozer Family 15h processors) We have 400 plus VMs hosted on our hyper v clusters (Server 2012R2 and SCVMM 2012r2), and after January updates can no longer live migrate. We have put the KB4490512 update on one of the hosts but it requires a reboot, which in turn would require us to power down our VMs as we are unable to migrate them off now.  Is there/will there be a fix to enable us to not have to reboot the hosts?  or is there/ will there be a workaround to enable us to live migrate the vms ?

Hopefully there will be as this will cause a lot of business disruption.

Any help would be much appreciated

Hyper-V Querries Slow Outside VM

$

My PC/Host Machine:

  • PC
  • Windows 10 PRO
  • 64GB
  • Xeon Processor
  • Quadro 9000
  • Dinky Little Thumb Driver Wifi Adapter

The VM:

  • 8GB RAM
  • 4 Virtual Processors
  • Hardware Acceleration > Virtual Machine Queue: Set to Off/Disabled
  • Windows Server 2012 R2

All setup on my local PC, no external networking should be required. When I connect to the VM thru the Hypervisor RDP window or via Teamviewer, my Oracle database queries are nice and fast.

However when I do those same queries from the host machine, they tend to run slow at first, like if the device has been sitting a while. They sometimes get fast too... the speed measurement seems to putter like a muffler or something. Sometimes its way to slow, like 2 minutes to retrieve 10 simple database rows... I've tested on the VM and on the host machine the same query simultaneously, the VM is less than .1 seconds to respond, the host machine is long, minutes.

VQM seemed like the most likely cause so I disabled it. The interwebs also recommended disabling it on the physical network adapter, but the setting is found there on this dinky little USB Wifi Adapter.

Any help is appreciated

Help!!

For the past month I have been trying to fix an issue that I have been having with my Hyper-V role management tools.

When I attempt to open any of my virtual machines under Failover Cluster Management the error message that I am getting is :

“The Hyper-V role management tools are not installed, you can install by opening Server Manager and installing either the Hyper-V role, or expanding the “Remote Server Administration Tools” feature and installing “Hyper-V management tools in failover cluster manager”

Note: The tools and features are already installed as well as the failover clustering and Remote Server Administrator.

Any help would be amazing!! Thank you

Slow network performance using external Hyper-V virtual switch

Hello.

I have very bad network performance on Hyper-V (Windows Server 2019 Standard) external virtual switch. File transfer speed from Virtual machine to physical machine is about 40MB/s, while file transfer from Hyper-V host to same physical machine is aobut 120 MB/s. Server is new, Proliant DL 380 Gen10. 1 physical network card is for management and other three are in Nic Teaming connected to external virtual switch. I've already tried to use without network teaming and speed is still slow. I read about some problems using VMQ and Broadcom network cards(HPE Ethernet 1Gb 4-port 331i Adapter), but this problem was known few years ago. SR-IOV is not enabled, because ethernet card does not support it. Driver release is latest. All suggestions to fix my problem are welcome.

Marko

Hello,

As i'm trying to enable Nested Virtualization within Window Server 2016, i have been having the below error's lately. I checked the setting/Configuration and everything seems to be mounted correctly. To kick the configurations for the VM, i Have enabled Mac Address Spoofing ON, Dynamic memory enabled and have set -ExposeVirtualizationExtensions $true.

From the Event Viewer i have below message:

  • The virtualization infrastructure driver (VID) is not running. (Event ID : 15350)
  • The Virtual Machine Management Service failed to start the virtual machine 'QNX' because one of the Hyper-V components is not running (Event Id : 20144)

I'm currently having a Virtual Server hosted by VMware trying to enable Nested Virtualization for the same.

Thanks for the Help!

Hardware requirements for SQL on Hyper-V 2019

Hi,

we need to size/buy the hardware for a Hyper-V Server that fit best for the use with a MSSQL2017/2019 Server. The thing is, we get very different information from our partners about the configuration of the harddiscs. The Server has to use local drives, so we decided to use ssd.

The problem we got stuck on is how to configure them. From the SQL-Servers point of view you would use dedicated RAID-5 for the database-files and dedicated RAID-1 for logfiles and tempdb. But how about the hyper-v point of view ?

Shall we use the dedicated RAID´s and apply them to the SQL-Server as dedicated drives (as physikal or virtual ?), or shall we build a RAID10 and let all the SQL-DB`s and virtual machines run on this one global drive ?

Any suggestions are welcome

Kind regards

Virtual machine located on a removable drive

I have a virtual machine located on a removable drive. This drive sleeps when not in use for an extended period of time. If Hyper-V Manager is started when the drive is asleep, Manager reports that the virtual machine state is "Off-critical". OK, but when the drive spins up a couple of seconds later, it takes up to two minutes for Manager to figure it out and update the VM status to "Off". Is there a way to speed up the polling cycle to minimize the time it takes for Manager to recognize the updated state of the drive?

Failure when expanding disk (Windows Server 2016)

We have several Windows 2016 Std with Hyper-V role installed. Standalone server

Quite often, when we are trying to modify running VM with Expand Dynamic disk operation for guest OS - we have a problem. If we are expanding not a system drive - VMs is "reachable" with ping, it looks working, When we are looking inside guest VM - the volume that was modified - is in "freezed" state. Disk management - hanging, Open via explorer - waiting forever/not responding. A lot of errors related to volume.

When we are changing system drive (same Expand operation) - VM stop responding at all (ping, RDP, etc).

When VM is in stopped state - same operation goes without a problem.

Host 2016 server event logs - doesnt have any useful info/errors, etc.

We waited up to 20 min, then tried to cancel operation, restart HV VM management service.

But the only possible way that we found for restoring VM was to RESET HyperV host.

We were able to reproduce couple of times with VMs based on 2012 R2 and 2016 guest OS. Periodically - it goes well, without problem for same VMs.

With 2012R2 - there is no such problem, we made same operation hundreds of times.

That is crazy solution, for such simple operation when VM is large SQL server (1,5 TB RAM, etc), and should be 99,9% uptime. Please help to find out what can be the reason of that problem.

Unable to convert existing snapshot to ReferencePoint.

Hello!

I'm trying to implement fast backup tool for Windows Server 2016+ Hyper-V (configuration 8+). I am using  C++ COM WMI. I was able to successfully create a snapshot and wait for Job is done but get in trouble to convert it to ReferencePoint. For this purpose I use  ROOT\virtualization\v2 namespace, ConvertToReferencePoint method of the Msvm_VirtualSystemSnapshotService class. Incoming parameters field with: AffectedSnapshot contains __PATH of Msvm_VirtualSystemSettingData (Checkpoint settings for the virtual machine.), ReferencePointSettings left empty because it noted in docs as optional. After method executing new Job not created (Job out param) is null and ReturnValue  is 32770 (vendor specific range).

What am I doing wrong?

Hyper-V on Windows 10 PC and setting up shared storage to create a DFS cluster

$

I have created two servers in the Hyper-V of my windows 10 machine. I want to set up DFS cluster (and down the line I plan to deploy two more server to create SQL cluster with Always On group).

However, I am not able to create the lab scenario because of lack of shared storage. Is there a way to create a virtual disk and then share it with both servers? I tried it but once one VM locks it the other won't have access.

Anyway insight to get this going would be appreciated very much!

Hyper-v vs Domain Services

$

Server 2012

Pretty sure I had the Hyper-v role installed on my server.

Last night I installed the Active Directory Services role. On reboot, neither role is installed. Not sure what happened, but maybe someone can comment.

ALSO...

What is the preferred arrangement:

1. Hyper-v and DC running on same local host

2. Hyper-v with DC running on VM

3. Separate DC on designated physical server

4. Other best practice

My intention is to use the hyper-v manager server for virtual environments;  to help with application development on different server environments. I want a Domain Controller because I need a practice environment for testing domain services.

Hello everyone,

I need to find out with you guys if its possible to run 2 Hyper-V environments in the same LAN, the LAN runs 1 hardware cluster and 2 more hardware servers. If so, are there any risks? Also, I like your suggestions on a hardware compatibility software that I can test if my hardware is suitable running Win Server 2019.

Many thanks for your help.

Hi,

I have three virtual machines (Windows 10, Windows Server 2016 as a DC, Windows Server 2016 as a Router) in Hyper-V server. My problem is that I cannot ping the client and dc from the router and vice versa. Here are my Hyper-V settings:

I've turned off the firewalls for all VMs.

Thanks for your answers

AMD Opteron(TM) Processor 6272, 2100 Mhz, 8 Core(s), 16 Logical Processor(s) - Are they Hyper-V Nested Capable

I currently have a half dozen AMD Opteron(TM) Processor 6272, 2100 Mhz, 8 Core(s), 16 Logical Processor(s) that I would like to use in my Hyper-V nested visualization plans. Can someone tell me if the CPU's are supported or not. I thought they were but I keep getting the same error that the CPU hardware is not supported for nested visualization.

Can someone give me an answer on this?

Server 2016 Hyper-V Replica - Planned failover keeps trying to use short domain

$

I have two Windows Server 2016 machines running Hyper-V.  I've successfully configured Hyper-V replica but I have a problem during planned failover.  When I initiate the planned failover and check "Reverse the replication direction" box, it fails to reverse the replication direction, giving the 29262 error.  Instead of using the FQDN specified in the replica configuration, it uses the format hostname.shortdomain as the server name (the "Pre-2000" domain name).  When I manually reverse the direction and change the replica hostname to the FQDN, it works.

I believe this may have started when I migrated my Active Directory server from 2012R2 to 2016 and decommissioned my WINS server.  My current domain functional level is 2008R2, although I don't know why that would matter.

It seems to me that Hyper-V should be using the FQDN and not the short domain format when reversing direction, but I don't know how to make it do that.  Any help would be appreciated!

Can i Stop the running merge of an Snapshot

$

Hello!

We have transfered our Exchange-Server from a 2008 R2 Hyper-V to a 2016 Hyper-V.

The VM has a very big and old Snapshot. We tried first to merge the Snapshot on the 2008 HyperV but

this was impossible. So we transfered the VM To the new Hyper-V. After the Transfer the Merge started automaticly.

Our Problem is, that the Merge take a lot of Performance, so that our Servers are running but with a very bad performance.

My Question: Does anybody know what the VM will do when i abort the Merge.

Will it stop and i can restart it later. Or will it ruin my complete Config?

Andreas

Unable to reverse replication (Replica server failed to authorize the connection)

Hello!
I'm working on a project that will require me to fail a LOT of Hyper-V VMs from one host to another at hundreds of remote sites.

Hosts are all on Server 2012 (not r2), domain joined, and I have local admin rights on all boxes, using a domain account.

I'm transferring VMName from Host02 to Host01, as part of the following test:

During prep testing, I've found that quite a few that are replicating without any issue whatsoever, but when I try to reverse the replication, I receive an error saying,

Replica server 'HOST02' failed to authorize the connection. Check the Replica server for appropriate access permissions

(Event ID 29232 on Host01) and,

Hyper-V failed to enable reverse replication for 'VMName': General access denied error (0x80070005). (Virtual Machine ID 9A0D1D89-554A-4B46-996B-EC047601DC06)

(Event ID 32068 on Host01) With the additional info on the popup in the Reverse replication wizard:

"Replica server Host02 failed to authorize the connection. Check the Replica server for appropriate access permissions"

I did read this post (Link is below, can't post links yet), but I don't have event ID 29284.

https://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/ie/en-US/c41ee7be-4fa2-47f7-a14c-170fbbb36ee6/alternative-reason-for-replica-server-failed-to-authorized-the-connection-error-80070005?forum=winserverhyperv

Any ideas?
