All VMs crash when we loose Layer 3 connectivity
Hope this makes sense. I am not talking about the VMQ problem that lots of other people are getting, by the way.
So not this

source mac address of packets originating from VMs when passing from host's nic
Hello
i need to know whether any mac address translation is performed on packets coming from virtual machines ccnnected to the external network in hyper-v, when these packets are going out from hyper-v host to real physical Local area network ?
when we have two virtual machines which are connected to a hyper-v host, what do we see in the cam table of our cisco switfh inside network? The mac address of vm or host ?
Hyper-V Virtual Switch Manager on Surface Pro 3 - Bind Failed: Data Supplied is of Wrong Type
Just over a week ago I set up Hyper-V on Windows 10 (build 14257) on a Surface Pro 3, set up a new external virtual network and everything worked well until some updates were applied today and the external network I created had changed itself from being set to Internal instead of External and VMs displayed network connection disconnected.
I have tried to fix this from Hyper-V Virtual Switch Manager but every change I try results in an error message when it is being applied saying:
Ethernet port '{A62DC670-A998-4435-8984-DC21D5996290}' bind failed: Data supplied is of wrong type. (0x8007065D).
I did find I could remove the existing virtual switch but now I have no virtual switches and am unable to create any due to the error above.
Does anyone know how to fix this?
I have looked online at similar problems but in each case the error is different.
Thanks

Hyper-V Replication (Disk write speed Problem)
For this first time I deployed two Hyper-V in workgroup with a single VM (virtual machine ), the replication happens perfectly.
My problem:
-the disk writing rate on the Hyper-V is about 900 MB / s
-the disk writing rate in the VM before enabling replication is about 800 MB / s
-the writing rate in the VM disk after enabling replication down to about 250 MB / s
I tried using a VM of in 1st and in 2nd generation, I observed the same differences ...
But the disk read speed that is about 1300 MB / s in the Hyper-V, remains substantially correct in the VM ( than 1100 Mb / s in all cases).
The problem is the disk write speed that drops drastically down in the VM after that the réplication is enabled and the initial transfer completed.
Does anyone have an idea of the cause of this huge drop down?
Best regards
How to present autoUnattend.xml on removable media to guest install
It's easy to create a guest OS by defining a new VM, mounting an ISO to boot from, and starting it up for an attended install. However, my goal is to present an autoUnattend.xml file to the installing OS on removable media. This is a standard practice when installing to physical HW. While there are many ways to make the contents of a flash drive available to a VM, none of them are recognized as removable media, and therefore the normal installation process doesn't look externally for an XML file. Alternatively, I could create a custom image with the file embedded in the \Sources folder, but that process requires way too much time for what is needed here. It should be possible to effectively, drop in the installation DVD, plug in the removable media, and boot up.
I've tried creating a virtual floppy and mounting that in the VM, but so far it hasn't worked.
How can I install a guest OS using the equivalent of dropping in a DVD and plugging in removable media that contains my XML file?
thanks for your help.

Help regarding Windows Server backup slowing down all virtual machines on hyperv
Hi there.
Hyperv server with SATA disks in RAID1. Hyperv has also attached USB 3.0 external disk.
Hyperv has 5 virtual machines. One of those virtual machine has EXCHANGE2013 on it.
The attached USB 3.0 external disk on hyperv is visible on EXCHANGE2013 virtual machine as another disk.
We use Windows Server Backup on that virtual machine EXCHANGE2013 which makes backup to USB 3.0 external disk.
Durring the process of backup on EXCHANGE2013 all the other Virtual machines on HYPERV became extremly slow.
Is there a way to configure and fix this?
With best regards

What is a VHD Set?
VHD and VHDX won't Compact
I also have the same problem.
If I compact a VHD or VHDX the compact runs for one second and ends, and the VM's remain uncompacted.
I am using REFS format on the drive, and the VM's are Windows 7 x86, if that makes any difference.
I have disabled System Restore in VM's, as that was a known problem with 2008 R2.
Can this be reported as a bug in Server 2012 RC.
2 copies of windows server 2008 r2 standard - licensing query
Hi, we own 2 copies of "Windows Server 2008 r2 standard" specifically for two physical servers.
We would like to migrate to one new server only with higher spec, we don't expect it to have more than 2 CPU's.
This is in order to virtualize our environment.
Its clear that each copy allows one virtual machine licence. How could we licence one physical machine and 3 virtual machines?
Can we do that by applying one licence key to the host and VM1, and then the other licence key to VM2 and VM3 (wishful thinking)?
Or can we only apply the 2nd license to VM2 and we have to buy another copy for VM3? Is this allowed?
Or will we have to do something else?
Many Thanks in advance!
Anthony
2012R2 VM boot failure - a device attached to the system is not functioning
Hi,
have problems with one of VMs on 2012R2 host
Host is HP DL160 Gen9 with E5-2620v3 (12cores), P440 storage controller, 2xSAS disks.
VM1 boots normally with 8 vcpu (but integration services doesn't report status - see below), however with 9-12vcpu system boots in a weird mode. The first blue screen is not blue, but light blue/magenta. I can type password to log in, but nothing happens when i click ok/enter - no failures and no result. Sometimes (another boot) password i type is typed with Chinese instead on English. In any case you cannot login. sometimes it says "a device attached to the system is not functioning"
host is: Windows Server 2012R2 (fully updated)
VM1 (the problematic one) is 2012R2 (fully updated), Integration services state/version not detected
State : Running
MemoryStatus : OK
Status : Operating normally
Generation : 2
IntegrationServicesState :
IntegrationServicesVersion :
VM2 (good) is 2012R2
State : Running
MemoryStatus : OK
Status : Operating normally
Generation : 2
IntegrationServicesState : Up to date
IntegrationServicesVersion : 6.3.9600.16384
So host is generally ok, but some issues with VM1. when i try to install Integration tools on VM1 i got:
---------------------------

This computer is already running the current version of integration services (version 6.3.9600.16384).

sfc /scannow doesn't find any issues
I have a feeling it's related to some bad integration driver. maybe some driver have replaced. Or maybe it's a service, that starts faster with more vcpu and fails. Not sure what else to do
Hyper-V Hangs Loading setting data
I am having an identical problem others are reporting where Hyper-V hangs after installing the RemoteFX role with RTM SP1. The server specs are as follows:
WIN 2008 ENT R2 w/RTM SP1, DELL T710 w/2 Intel Xeon X5550 2.66GHz CPU's, 24GB RAM, nVidia FX 3800 with W2008 R2 x64 Driver installed.
The VM properties will not load regardless of what I try & I therefore cannot add the RemoteFX role which is the primary purpose of this exercise. Any help would be greatly appreciated!
