Centos on hyper-v, cpu utilization in virtual machines

I have a vm (linux centos) running on hyper-v (Version: 6.3.9600.16384) on windows server 2012 R2. It is running on a PC with a core-i5-3750.

I am trying to utilize maximum from physical cpu in my linux vm. I have a process (4 parallel) in the linux utilizing all 4 cores to 100%:

I have configured the vm to reserve 80% of the cpu (from all 4 cores) and the limit is 100%, however, the cpu usage in task manager in windows server is pretty minimal:

My question is: Is what I see in the task manager on win server the actual physical usage of the cpu or the reserved cpu by vm is disregarded by the task manager when hyper-v reserves it for the vm. If not, then what can I do to force the hyper-v to give maximum possible processing power to my vm.

Thanks

How to move Hyper-V CSV cluster to different storage LUN-s

Hi.

I need to replace old storage with new storage.

This old storage is used for Hyper-V CSV cluster (2 nodes).

What is the path to move data from one LUN to another LUN in CSV cluster.

I need to copy data (VM-s) from one LUN to another LUN on new storage and replace old disk with new disk in CSV cluster.

Note:

There is no storage migration option. Manually LUN-to-LUNdisk block copy.

Hyper-V Guest storage options

Hi,

Have 2 Virtual Server 2012 R2 domain controllers and now I want to add File and Storage Services on one of the VM's.

Should I create a volume from the same disk (already setup as RAID 1 and using it's remaining free space) that the Windows Server VM is installed on or is there a best practice approach to add storage to a VM for file sharing purposes ?

Does Storage Spaces provide any possibility for creating a volume on the VM used for File Sharing if I install additional SATA drives?

My end goal is to have files shared that are protected (RAID) and if possible highly available so if one VM is down the other takes over.

Thanks

SR-IOV PROBLEM TO ACTIVATE

Hello
I have a windows server 2012R2 as host with Hyper-V role installed.
This host has 5 VMs, where three VMs are Windows 2012R2 and Windows 2008R2 VMs 2
I have 5 physical NICs on the host and all network cards are from the same manufacturer therefore has the same unit, the settings in the Networks unit boards are exactly alike.

5 Switches configured for virtual machines in the (external), with marked SRV-IOV, so configure the hardware acceleration in VMs configured with SR-IOV.

The server complies with all the conditions for SRV-IOV.

The problem is that only the VMs that are running Windows 2012R2, shows the network status with the SRV-IOV, VMs with Windows 2008 R2, only shows the status of the network as OK.

So I wonder if Windows 2008R2 is not entitled to SR-IOV?

Or if something is hidden in the configuration that did not?

Automate VM deployment (including NIC settings)

Hello,

We have a couple of sample VHD disks we would like to automate for VM's.
So we can create a VM with a sample disk with a script.
Creating and attaching the sample disk is not a problem.

But how can we script the settings like IP addresses and administrator passwords for example.
We now have to manualy log in to this new server and set them.
I'm sure there must be a way to achieve this, can someone point me in the right direction?

We are running Hyper-V in a Windows 2012R2 failover cluster.

HP DL380p Gen8 Server won't boot after installing Hyper-V Role

Hi Everyone

Has anyone noted out in the field HP DL380p Gen8 Servers not booting after installing the Server 2012 (NOT R2) Hyper-V role?

Here in our test lab, as soon as I installed the Hyper-V role and rebooted, Server 2012  will not start (not even a BSOD) just a blank screen. The PROD Server is Server 2012, so we have to replicate in the test lab for DR purposes.

Product ID: 642120-371 BIOS is P70 07/01/2015

Intel VTPro etc enabled in BIOS. No USB3 in this system. Tried disabling USB and rebooting to no avail as per suggestions from HP.

The DL380p has a HP D2000 Disk Enclosure attached (PN AJ941A) and that initializes the 24 disks without issue.  I can't see anything in:

HP ProLiant DL380p Gen8 Server - Product documentation, DL380p is compatible with Server 2012

Any ideas / resolutions most appreciated!

Hyper V compatibility with Broadcast playout sofware

Hi,

I would like to ask for your expertise if it would be possible for our playout software integrated to Hyper-V? Here's the required minimum specification:

- Windows 7 Professional 64Bit

- Dual Core 2.0 GHz or faster CPU

- 3GB of RAM(dedicated) for 32 bit O.S. \ 8GB of RAM for 64 bit O.S.

- *Onboard video if CPU supports HD graphics 4000 or higher

- *Video card with 1GB of RAM

As I can see that Hyper-V is moving forward that it can virtualize most of all application needed. Thank you for anyone who will respond.

Hyper-V 2012 R2 - Restart VMs after network/NAS/iSCSI failure

$

Hi there,

Is there a way to make sure all VMs on a Hyper-V Cluster, which are marked to autostart, actually restart after a severe network outage which completely disconnects all LUNs. Currently if iSCSI storage is disconnected from all nodes, Hyper-v trys to failover to another node, fails and then gives up.

When the storage comes back online the VM remains in the failed state until manual intervention or the whole server is restarted.

ESXi recognises storage disconnects and seamlessly restarts machines with storage interruptions once the storage comes back online.

Cheers

Routing traffic from one IP from one Nic with two IPs to a virtual machine

$

Hello. I have a question for networking specialists. Because it's about a perhaps typical Hyper-V scenario i posted it here. Here we go:

I have a host with one nic. To this one nic the provider routes two external IPs IP1 and IP2. Hyper-V and Routing and Remote Access is installed on the host. I instantiated one Hyper-V virtual ethernet adapter "vEthernet (External)" with the external IP1 and IP2, external gateway and external DNS-servers and one Hyper-V virtual ethernet adapter "vEthernet (Internal)" with just the internal network gateway-address 192.168.0.1. The installed virtual machine has the fixed ip 192.168.0.10 and default gateway 192.168.0.1. Accessing the internet from the virtual machine is possible. Until now, no traffic is routed to the VM.

What do I need to do, to route all traffic coming in via IP2 over 192.168.0.1 to the vm with 192.168.0.10?

Each time I try to configure NAT, accessing the internet from the vm is not possible any more. Actual routing is:

Remote Desktop manage over WORKGROUP

$

Hello

I've noticed that with all virtual machines in Hyper-V that are in same Domain you can set up Hyper-V management, but what about workgroup?

I don't want to use domain.

All virtual machines are in same WORKGROUP.

Now remote services  can "only" be managed over a domain?

Thanks

Hyper-V - 'Failed to start the virtual machine 'test' because one of the Hyper-V components is not running.'

Hi all,

Having a bit of a nightmare with Hyper-V on my Windows 8 Pro laptop - Whenever I create a new VM and try to start it I receive the following error;

'Failed to start the virtual machine 'test' because one of the Hyper-V components is not running.'

I sometimes also receive an error saying something along the lines of 'Unable to change virtual machine state'

I have done a lot of searching a seen two common answers - The first is to try removing the Hyper-V role and re-adding it - I have tried this several times to no avail. (Intel VT and all virtualisation capabilities are enabled in BIOS). The second issue it would seem some people have had relates to editing the VMX configuration file and adding the linehypervisor.cpuid.v0 = "FALSE" - I thought VMX files were only present in VMware Virtual Machines...

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Many thanks in advance.

James

Initial Replication Failing

Hi - have to 2012 R2 Hyper-V hosts running 4 VM's each. All VM's are to be replicated to the opposite server. Managed to get all but one VM replicating. As soon as the wizard is complete, which normally comes up with Successful and starts the replication, it errors with message that there is an Invalid Parameter.  Wizard settings are exactly the same as all 7 other VM's that worked. There is plenty of space on the drive that hosts the replicas also on the opposite server.

Full Error: Enabling Replication Failed: Hyper-V operation failed because the specified parameter is no valid: 'IncludedDisks' is not valid for Hyper-V for virtual machine xxxxxxx: Invalid Parameter (0x80041008). (Virtual machine IDMachine ID).

There are 2 VHDX files for the server, both are fairly small (no bigger than ones that have worked) and both a fixed size.

Any ideas?

Hyperv migrate virtual machine to other hyperv

Hi there.

We have a standalone 2012 R2 OS with HYPERV role.
It contains 5 virtual machine (2domain controllers, 1 front end exchange server, 1 edge exchange server and 1 Linux).
We Will reinstall this HYPERV server because we need to reorganize RAID's on this server.

We have another server where we Will install 2012 R2 with HYPERV. Now the idea is to move virtual machines from HYPERV1 to HYPERV2, then reinstall HYPERV1 and put back virtual machines to it.
What would be the best way to migrate those virtual machines?

We thought about SHUTTING DOWN virtual machine on HYPERV1, manually copying Virtual Machine configuration Files and Virtual Machines HARD DISK's to HYPERV2 and start it there.
Do you recommend any other way?
Hyperv is not in CLUSTER mode, neither HYPERV1 or HYPERV2...

Is there any third party software that I can use on a Windows 8.1 OS that will group Hyper-V VMs? I'd like to put VMs into groups such as "Exchange", "DCs", etc. I looked but I can't find any.

Capturing live migration and snapshot event in kernel for a vhdx

$

Hi, I am developing an fsfilter driver on windows 2012 r2. Job is to capture all the IOS happening on vhdx file which I am able to do. But I have no access to any documentation which talks about capturing live migration and snapshot event for vhdx in kernel because I want to do some pre and post processing on vhdx when live migration and snapshot operation is triggered. Can anybody help me on this? Just to clarify, this fsfilter sits on windows 2012r2 host where hyper-v is enabled. I do want to keep any component inside each VM for this purpose. So far, for snapshot - I check if any avhdx is created. If it is created then I know snapshot is triggered. However this is more of hack, I was thinking if there is msdn designed way to hold these operations (live migration& snapshot) in kernel (especially in fsfilter driver). Sorry, if I am attached to wrong forum. If yes then please guide me to right forum.

Hyper-V VMs export problem

Hello guys,

I have two servers, one is Windows Server 2012 R2, and second one is Hyper V Server 2012 core edition. I am trying to export my VMs (Hyper-V Server) to shared folder on our file server through Hyper-V Manager on Windows Server 2012 machine. And I am continuously failing to that.

And I get a error:

"Failed to create export directory with error 'The user name or password is incorrect.'(0x8007052E)"

I add all rights to the shared folder, even "everyone" just for testing, I double checked NTFS level and share level permissions.

I also have some test VMs on my windows 10 machine and I successfully exported all Vms to the same shared folder, directly from Hyper-V manager (VMs and hyper-Manager on the same pc). Is there any suggestions,

Thanks, Z
