File server for 300 users

Hello,
this is propably not hyper-v related question (maybe windows general) but .. maybe it is

We are planning to build Hyper-V based server for approx 300+ users.

We need around 4TB for user data.

Tech specs: 1xCPU / 12core, 64GB RAM
2x 300GB SAS (Raid1)
.. then bunch of disks for data

So, idea is:
Build the server on W2012 hyper-v (on 300GB)
Add few more disks (6x 1TB / Raid5)

Build VM (100GB system add more virtual disks for data (vhdx))

There is a chance that physical server will host few more VMs.  Should i add another CPU, or is it enough?

Would you combine Raid0 and Raid5 as well?

VMConnect Enhanced Session - Use all my monitors

Hi,

I can no longer view my VM on all my monitors by using VMConnect Enhanced Session mode.

I select "Use all my monitors" when connecting with VMConnect to my VM but the session  is only shows on one monitor.

If I use MSTSC to connect to my VM and select "Use all my monitors" it works, but since I'm not connecting with VMConnect I don't have console options such as shutdown from inside the VM etc.

Clone a Hyper-V virtual server on the same host ?

Hi there,

tomorrow i have to clone a Virtual Server on the same Hyper-V host.

Can you please tell me what should i be warned about before i make the clone ?

Does Hyper-V change the SID of the cloned virtual server automatically when you use the clone feature ?

Or should i change the server configuration after the clone ?

Thank you.

I have a standalone hyper v server 2012 R2, non domain joined.

I have added a user to hyper-v administrators group which gives the user unrestricted access to hyper V. The user is able to login to the hyper V but user not able to see any VMs after launching hyper V manager. Error is "You do not have the required permission to complete the task. Contact the administrator of the authorization policy for the computer 'localhost'

There is not SCVMM in our environment. I have tried using mmc authorization to assign user to the administrators group. it does not work too with same error.

Kindly help. Thanks!

How to start a new Virtual Machine

Hello,

First of all, I am new using Hyper-V and this is only for an internal lab. I have Win10 Pro in my PC and I enabled Hyper-V features. I created a New Virtual Machine and I installed Windows Server 2012 Std. At the installation process I entered all required data, like language, time zone, etc. and the installation process finish. The first time, I assign a password for the Administrator. After sign in, the virtual machine just open a Command Window, but Windows OS never starts.

Am I missing something? what I need to do to start Windows?

Thanks.

HP DL380p Gen8 Server won't boot after installing Hyper-V Role

Hi Everyone

Has anyone noted out in the field HP DL380p Gen8 Servers not booting after installing the Server 2012 (NOT R2) Hyper-V role?

Here in our test lab, as soon as I installed the Hyper-V role and rebooted, Server 2012  will not start (not even a BSOD) just a blank screen. The PROD Server is Server 2012, so we have to replicate in the test lab for DR purposes.

Product ID: 642120-371 BIOS is P70 07/01/2015

Intel VTPro etc enabled in BIOS. No USB3 in this system. Tried disabling USB and rebooting to no avail as per suggestions from HP.

The DL380p has a HP D2000 Disk Enclosure attached (PN AJ941A) and that initializes the 24 disks without issue.  I can't see anything in:

HP ProLiant DL380p Gen8 Server - Product documentation, DL380p is compatible with Server 2012

Any ideas / resolutions most appreciated!

It seems in Windows 10 there is type of virtual disk called "VHD Set". What is this? Is this similar to a shared disk feature offered by Virtual Box?

Windows Server 2012 r2 HyperV VM Lost Network Connectivity Intermittently

Hi,

One of our Windows 2012 r2 Hyper-V host has 4 2012 r2 VM's & one of them has strange Network issue. Recently this VM have started getting network disconnection with some IP's. There are two issues now with this VM whereas same Host has 3 other VM which are working fine without any issue. Integration services are already on updated version (6.3.9600.16384).

--> Whenever restart Host server, this VM lost complete network connectivity & i have to clear arp on my gateway CISCO router       to ping this VM back

--> Once VM Network restored, this VM is not getting connectivity with same Subnet some IP's whereas same subnet other IP's         are accessible.

Tried to update LAN Driver (Intel(R) I350 Gigabit Network Adapter) but issue remains same. Tried to disable VMQ on VM but still same issue.

Appreciate any help to resolve this issue.

Hyper-VM Interval internet cutdown

Hello,
I´ve been facing a problem with the internet connection, which is connected to one of the Virtual machines in Hyper-V environment.
########################
I will Explain first the topology:

The VM has 2 Network adapters which are both connected to External Virtuel switches. One of them is used only for this Server which is connected to the Internet directly through a "Modem". The 2nd Adapter is used for our Local Network with a Static IP and without default gateway.
This VM is acting as a Router by using RRAS in order to do the NATing and it is configured as our Default Gateway for the whole Network.
The IP of this VM has been configured in the DHCP Route and DNS Forwarder.
########################
The problem:

There is an interval internet cut down every almost 30 second. Whenever I try to Test the internet speed, the internet speed goes up and start to fall down for a while and then it goes up again.
I have tried everything and I have been trying from more than 2 weeks but nothing has worked so far.  I tested it but with a physical server and it worked perfectly.

I would really really appreciate if someone has already faced and solved this problem or have a clue about it.

How to Manage HyperV R2 Server Security Permission

Hi,

We have setup a HyperV R2 Server and we have VM running on that HyperV Server

Now how to i set or add a NON Administrator account to access HyperV Server thru RSAT ?

For example i have a domain user with non administrative account can access the HyperV Server thru his laptop via windows 7 with RSAT.

Only administrators of the domain can connect to the HyperV Server using RSAT.

I tried to edit the Initialstore.xml and followed the instruction from this link (http://blog.mundy.co/Hyper-V/setting-up-remote-administration-for-hyper-v-server) but didnt work either. I have included a test account on the administrator but when the user trying to access its says "You do not have the required permission to complete......."

Please Help.

Thanks and more power !

Hyper-V Snapshot Merge/Deletion

Good Morning!

I would like to delete a snapshot that was created 11/2015 but would like to know if it is possible to merge it with the original vhd. It has been a few months since it's creation so I am worried about loss of data if I make any changes to it. From what I can see, it is eating up space and I have no documentation as to why the snapshot was created in the first place (previous admin was 'let go').

Hyper-V OS: Server 2008 R2; the VM includes 3 vhds (OS, database, db backups).

I appreciate your assistance and thank you in advance!

Can you use Hyper-V Replica with a File Server (General Use) in a Guest Cluster

Hi,

We have a 2012 R2 two node Guest Cluster using a shared VHDX located on a CSV to provide general file server services and wanted to know if it's possible/supported to use the Hyper-V Replica feature to replicate the above file server to another datacentre for DR purposes?

We have used the Hyper-Replica feature on a few other VMs that aren't clustered but weren't sure about the implications of using the same technology for a Guest Clustered role.

Cheers for now

Hyper-V Server 2012 R2 Cluster Networking

$

Hi All,

I would like to ask you about a Hyper-V cluster networking best practice regarding the IP addressing and backup VLAN. The storage has SAS controllers so it’s not mentioned below. I have read through some blogs and I thought I will create my 2 node cluster this way:

Physical DC:

IP address: 10.0.1.5/24

Virtual DC:

IP address: 10.0.1.6/24

HOST1:

Management & Cluster communication: 10.0.1.11/24, DNS: 10.0.1.5, 10.0.1.6

Live Migration & Cluster communication: 10.0.2.11/24

Backup Network: 10.0.3.11/24

HOST2:

Management & Cluster communication: 10.0.1.12/24, DNS: 10.0.1.5, 10.0.1.6

Live Migration & Cluster communication: 10.0.2.12/24

Backup Network: 10.0.3.12/24

CLUSTER RESOURCE:

IP address: 10.0.1.10/24

BACKUP SERVER:

IP address: 10.0.3.20/24, DNS: 10.0.1.5, 10.0.1.6

So is it OK if I only have one Cluster Resource IP address in subnet 10.0.1.0/24? Or do I need a Cluster Resource IP in the Backup Network subnet too? I wonder if I use only the 10.0.1.10/24 IP address for the cluster, then this subnet will be used for backup traffic instead of 10.0.3.0/24.

Thanks,

Dvijne

VM bandwidth management does not work

$

Hi,

We have a Hyper-V 2012 R2 host running on a DELL Poweredge R410 using the built-in Broadcom NetXtreme NIC drivers.  We have a VM running Windows 2008 R2 with the Integration Services installed.  The problem we have with this is the Bandwidth Management option in the VM settings using Hyper-V manager does not work.

As a test I set the maximum bandwidth to 5Mbps and attempted to copy a file from a physical server, but no change in file copy speed was noticed (~50MBytes/sec).

I have tried shutting down the VM and restarting the VM (the host has not been restarted), and also used powershell command "Set-VMNetworkAdapter -VMName VM -MaximumBandwidth 5000000" to no avail.

Automate VM deployment (including NIC settings)

Hello,

We have a couple of sample VHD disks we would like to automate for VM's.
So we can create a VM with a sample disk with a script.
Creating and attaching the sample disk is not a problem.

But how can we script the settings like IP addresses and administrator passwords for example.
We now have to manualy log in to this new server and set them.
I'm sure there must be a way to achieve this, can someone point me in the right direction?

We are running Hyper-V in a Windows 2012R2 failover cluster.

Hyper-V Server 2008 R2

$

I currently have two HP ProLiant DL380G7 servers running MS Server 2008 R2 in Core mode, with Hyper-V (Core 1 & 2).

Core 2 currently has two VM's running on it, both setup with a virtual network attached to a physical NIC on the Core itself. I recently upgraded the core's memory to allow for resource allocation to a new VM. I have since created and installed MS Server Enterprise 2008 R2 SP1 onto this. When creating a new virtual network for this VM I attached it to what I thought was a spare/unused physical NIC, but didn't tick the "Allow management operating system to share this network adapter" option.

I am now in the horrible situation whereby all physical NIC's are being used by the virtual network, thus preventing me the ability to remote manage the physical core OS itself! Thankfully the Microsoft Virtual Network Switch protocol is enabled on it meaning that it still allows the virtual machines on this Hyper-V host to communicate on the network.

I've downloaded and imported the following PowerShell module on Core 2: http://pshyperv.codeplex.com/releases/view/38769#ReviewsAnchor to try and manipluate the VM NICs. The core itself via SCONFIG is stating that "No active network adapters can be found". I'm having some real trouble being able to re-attach a NIC to the core to be able to re-configure its IP address etc. and then manage it again.

I've spoken to numerous people who have experienced and used this module but I'm not getting anywhere. Myself and a contact have been troubleshooting this for the last two days and its really starting to grind my gears! Any help would be much appreciated as I'm in dire need of some expert advice. Thanks in advance.
