Hi Everyone,

I am looking to get some feed back from the real world on what management software is being most widely used by Hyper-V users to manage their Hyper-V virtual datacenters. If you could please let me know from the following options it would be great. The goal is to create a plug-in/console for the software that is used by most Hyper-V deployments.

Please respond to the thread with your replies.

Options:

  1. System Center Virtual Machine Manager
  2. Failover Cluster Manager
  3. Hyper-V Manager

Thanks!

Cluster Error 1069 When VM Reboots

Hi

12 node 2012 R2 Hyper-v in Failover cluster configuration. I have an irritating issue where every now and then, when a VM is rebooted from its own OS, the Failover cluster manager will log an error 1069 which says "Cluster resource 'Virtual Machine vmname' of type 'Virtual Machine' in clustered role 'vmname' failed.

This happens every few weeks and isn't a big issue. I've got no cluster stability issues - no issues with clustered disks, hosts or anything. My cluster is as stable as anyone's out there. Apart from when it randomly logs this error when a VM is rebooted.

The VM isn't being backup up when it happens. There are no network issues. Disks all fine. Hosts all fine.

Anyone have an idea why this happens. It's driving me nuts.

Unable to change the memory on a Hyper-V VM

Hi,

Ok this is a bit strange.  we have a failover cluster with 2 Nodes, both running 2008 I am trying to increase the amount of memory on a particular VM from 6144 to 12288. When I boot the VM back up after changing the memory amount I get an error telling me there is insufficient space, setting the memory back to 6144 and it boots.  There is more than enough space on the cluster volume (SAN) and the VM VHDs themselves are fine with more than enough free space.

I have tried removing the VM from the cluster then deleting it and recreating it, attached to the original VHDs and get the same issue.

Any help greatly appreciated.

Duncan

Hi,

im wondering about a blank Memory demand Value at a virtual machine on my Windows 8.1 with enabled Hyper-V Feature. Inside the VM the OS is Hyper-V Server 2012 R2. I tried to update the Integration Services but they are actual already. Here is screenshot of the Memory Monitoring i get in the Hyper-V Console:

Can you help me guys?

Thanks

How do I allow hyper-v virtual machine accessing a folder on hyper-v without sharing the folder?

I have a Windows 2012 R2 Hyper-V host, I created a Hyper-V virtual machine. This VM will be my WSUS (windows 2012 r2), I want to store all my WSUS database and contents in a folder located on a host. How do I do this without sharing the folder? something like 'pass-through' hard disk but in my case it's just a data folder, thanks.

Restores of VMs from cluster shared volumes from SAN snaphots

Hi All

Anyone know of the best way for us to restore Vms from SAN snapshots.

We use a lot of cluster shared volumes, with multiple VMs on them. But we take SAN level (crash consistent i know) snapshots. When we have to restore a VM, we need to do this as fast as possible.

Currently we map the snapshot view to another cluster, then have to copy the vhdx files back to the oriignal cluster CSV volume. But it can be very slow copying over the network. Now we do this because, it is believed that we cannot map the snapshot view back to the original cluster. Else it gets confused over the volume and can corrupt the original CSV that is still being used by other VMs.

Can anyone confirm the above is true, and if so, what is the quickest way to work around this.

the recovered VMs need to be back on the original cluster unfortunately.

thanks, hope it all makes sense.

Hyper-V inside hyper-V is not working (windows10)

I have i5 proc, asus motherboard and enabled "Intel Virtualization" and "Execute Disable Bit" as in How to enable hardware virtualization on Asus motherboard, but I see no "Intel VT-d" settings to disable it). With this configuration all works great with VM ware workstation(including hypervisor inside hypervisor scenario).

Now I have installed Hyper-V inside Indows 8.1. This one works. After that i have installed Win10 server tech preview 2(build 10074) and enable hypervisor rolse there, there I can't run any virtual machine with message: The Virtual Machine Service failed to start the virtual machine 'X" because one of the Hyper-V components is not runnig.

In the message log I see :

Error: "The HV Host Service service terminated with the following error:
A device attached to the system is not functioning."

Warning: "Hypervisor SPT Resizing policy failed to initialize."

Error: 'Hypervisor Eventlog for global system events could not be created!"

Error" The VM and host networking components failed to negotiate protocol version '6.0'"

"The driver \Driver\vmbusr failed to load for the device ROOT\VMBus\0000."

"Hypervisor launch failed; Second Level Address Translation is required to launch the hypervisor."

What is going wrong? The same scenarion onWin 10 with hyperV role inside vmware workstation works well.

Is there a way to recover VHD after reset?

Hello, everyone.

Help me please with one problem:

I have windows 2012 r2 server + hyper-v role.
Virtual machine is also 2012 r2. Vhd is attached to it.

Using server manager, file server role i did:
- disable disk
- reset disk

VHD file is still big at host server.

I tried file_recovery_program and got:
Alot of files with right name and size, but in wrong folders and with null-s inside.
Alot of files grouped by types with names like "file1.doc", "file2.doc" etc. Most of these are working.

after reset was made, i created a copy of disk before experiments.

Is there any way to repair it?

Storage tiering with Hyper-V

Hi,

I'm considering setting up a storage tier with 4 regular disks and 4 SSDs on two Hyper-V hosts.

One server1, the disk would be dedicated to Hyper-V virtual machine VHDX files containing OS and applications

One server2, the disk would be dedicated to 1 Hyper-V virtual machine VHDX file containing the Database of a SQL Server.

My question is, will the smarts of storage tiering work so that for example the data in my SQL DBs accessed the most gets stored on the SSDs?

(or does storage tiering only really work on physical SQL servers and physical application servers?)

Thanks!

Memory demand blank for 2008 VM

Hi,

I had the same issue, the memory demand is blank. My Hyper V host is a Windows server 2012 R2 standard up to date and the VM is a Windows  2008 SP 2 up to date.

I made the test that you suggest and when move the VM to other host the issue remain. Then i suppose that the issue is Windows  2008 SP 2. Then I google it, and found several issues like this on the 2012 and a hot fix to solve it. but the hotfix is not longer available, the i supposed that maybe is becouse the fix now is automatic on windows update, but my system is up to date. Could you help me how to continue now?

Best regards,

Federico

Virtual Machine - high disk response time

$

Hi Everyone,

Got something strange happening in our lab at the moment and was wondering if anyone had experienced the same thing (and maybe has a solution).

Our lab environment in a nutshell:

2x Windows 2012 Hyper hosts cluster connected to a "home-made" SAN based on Windows 2012 iSCSI target.
Each Hyper-V host has two 1Gbps network cards to connect to the SAN via the Microsoft iSCSI initiator, with MPIO in load-balancing mode (least queue depth).

The SAN (Windows 2012 server with iSCSI target) has 4x 1Gbps cards, teamed two by two, so presenting two IP addresses used by each hosts to connect to it (via MPIO).
The disk subsystem on the Windows 2012 SAN is an external HP storage works with 25x HP 500 SATA disks, connected to the server via an INTEL RAID controller with 2x 240GB SSD caching enabled for read/write.

The iSCSI network is on a dedicated HP switch, with flow-control and jumbo frame enabled (tested ok).

Now the problem:

I've built a few virtual machines on the two hyper-v nodes and I'm getting very bad disk response time as soon as there is an increase in the disk traffic.
When the virtual server is doing very little, I get a normal 6-8ms, but I soon as I increase the traffic (by for example copying a big file, or installing an application), this figure shoots up to 200ms, 300ms and more!

So I first thought that it was my disk subsystem (and the SAN server), but while the spikes are happening within the virtual machine, the disks on the SAN Server are sitting at about 10ms, with some spikes to about 20ms (which is pretty good and what I would expect to see within the VM because of the SSD cache).

I then thought it could be the network, but during those times of activity, the network does not get saturated at all. Barely 150Mbps to 200Mbps per link.
I even tried to disable MPIO and run everything across one Ethernet link, but still the same result.

Am I missing something here? doing something wrong? or is this expected behaviour?

Thank you,
Stephane

Design Question (multiple same hostname guests on same host)

$

I just purchased a new powerful server and placed Windows Hyper-V Server (free version) on it (we do not have System Center).

We use already prebuilt images for student labs (consists of two servers that work together for an enterprise application).

One guest image has AD loaded with its own domain on the other is a client server. We have an automated system that copies the images and then imports then and fires them up.

The problem is they all have the same hostname and it even looks like they get duplicate ip addresses on the Private or Internal switch (only the external virtual switch receives dhcp, I am not sure how the other internal/private switches obtain their ip info). So if we place 3 students on the new server (6 VMs total [3 DCs and 3 clients]), The first two VMs appear fine but attempting to login to anyother DC results in the error: "The Local Security Authority cannot be contacted", I can only guess it getting confused on which is the real DC.

The host has 3 Internal Only switches and 1 External switch for internet access.

Is there a way to isolate each student's environment? I am guessing System Center can help but I am looking for other possible solutions.

Thank You, Joe

Adding vCPU to SQL Server 2008 R2 VM

I have a SQL Server 2008 R2 running on Windows Server 2008 R2 as a VM on VMWare. I would like to add a virtual processor, but have been told that it will cause problems with the SQL server. Is this correct? Are there steps that must be taken prior to adding a virtual processor to a VM with SQL server on it?

Hi,

What is the best way to repair a corrupt VHD/VHDX file? Is there a correct process to go through and if the tools by Microsoft don't work, what other 3rd party tools do you guys recommend?

Maximum Bandwidth value not working

Hi, 2012r2 host and guest.

We set a guest to 500mbps maximum bandwidth under the guest's Bandwidth Management settings.

However we can still saturate a full 1gbit link from this VM.

How do we get the maximum limit to actually work?

Thanks!

Windows Desktop Virtualization Resource Pooling in a LAN (computer lab)

I had a epiphany recently about the computer lab in my organization - We could refractor all the NUCs and virtualize the user desktop while pooling processing resources using abstraction layers to reserve a portion of the NUC's capacity and processing power and allocate optimal throughput via workflows and resource brokers.

I just don't know how to go about everything! I mean I need to know the exact virtual server frameworks and components and how I design the infrastructure --- can someone give me a lead?

Thank you!

Hyper-V machines, Windows Update and restart

$

I have three Hyper-V virtual machines on my Windows 2012 server. The VM’s are: a Domain Controller, a File Server and a Mail Server. As expected, when applying Windows Updates the VM’s also gets their updates.

My question is what is the best way to go about restarting the VM’s after the updates have been applied? I noticed that sometimes when you restart after a VM update, the host server also restarts. Sometimes only the VM restarts.

Mostly when applying updates, all three VM’s gets updates. Can I update these VM’s without restarting and afterwards restart the host server so the VM’s also restarts to apply the updates?

Is RESET (resetting) a VM in Hyper-V the same as restarting a computer?

THANKS

Hyper-V host disable time sync

Hi,

How I can disable time sync for guest VM with host when I rebote VM? I read this article, but I didn't find how to stop sync after reboting. Also this solution proposed by Vincet Hu is inappropriate becouse I need time which was before restart.

Thank in advance!
