Hyper-V Replica Fails to replicate...

$

Hey all,

Here's the details:

Site A:

Two node Hyper-v Cluster with 3 guests sending replicas to site B.  We'll call the guests siteaguest1, siteaguest2, and siteaguest3.  Replica's being sent over port 80.  No certs involved.

Site B:

Single Hyper-v host with 1 guest sending replicas to site A.  We'll call the guest sitebguest1.  Replica's being sent over port 80.  No certs involved.

Yesterday morning I got into the office and found siteaguest1 and sitebguest1 replication was behind and failing when I attempted to resume.  siteaguest2 and siteguest3 were both replicating normally.  Event logs for each failing guest look the same.  Every minute I see these two events:

Source: Hyper-V-VMMS

Event ID: 32022

Hyper-V could not replicate changes for virtual machine 'siteaguest1': The connection with the server was terminated abnormally (0x00002EFE).

Source: Hyper-V-VMMS

Event ID: 32315

Hyper-V failed to replicate changes for virtual machine 'siteaguest1'  Hyper-V will retry replication after 1 minute(s).

For fun, I disabled replica and then enabled it again and reseeded and I get the same result.

Any ideas as to what might be causing my replicas to fail?

Thanks in advance for your help.

Can I create a Hyper-V virtual machine from a windows 7 back up system image of a normal computer (none virtual machine)

I have created system images of my desktop computers using windows 7 back up. Can I 'restore' this backup image to a virtual machine?

How would I do this????

Setup shared storage for two Hyper-V hosts remoted managed by Hyper Manager (Windows 8.1)

I installed two Hyper-V bare-metal hosts, a Windows 8.1 Pro machine, one windows 2008 R2 domain controller , all installed inside VMware workstation 11 and bridged to my home LAN, the two Hyper-v hosts and the Windows 8.1 Pro machine, I enabled [1]  Virtualization Intel VT-x/EPT and AMD-V/RVI. [2] Virtualize CPU performance counters {VM workstation 11 --> VM -->settings -->hardware--->processor--->virtualization engine}, the two Hyper-V hosts are managed remotely from the Windows 8.1 Pro machine using Hyper-V manager.  On my home LAN, I have QNAP NAS and setup iSCSi storage, I easily add the iSCsi storage to the Windows 8.1 Pro machine, but two things buffling

1).  How come I could not initiate iSCSi connection directly from the two Hyper-V hosts (I could be wrong here)?  or can I initiate connection from two hosts using the remote Hyper-v manager?   [I conceptually treat Hyper-V barebone as esxi server, and Hyper-v manager as vSphere client]

2). I added iSCSi to the Win8.1 Pro machine, after formatting, it's treated as local HDD, but I can't add this to the Hyper-V hosts?   So far, I must install any VM onto the local HDD of the Hyper-v hosts, both only 20GB, that kinda stinks.

3). How can I add these two Hyper-V hosts to a small cluster?   Compare to VMware, Hyper-V is less intuitive, IMHO.

Due to licensing fee, I deploy Hyper-V through bare-metal installation without any Windows 2012 server, but almost every book, video, chat detailing configuration, Hyper-V is usually inside Windows Server 2012 R2. :-(

Thanks!

Unresponsive/slow VM while formating SCSI disk - Event ID 129.

Hello,

whenever I build new VM on our Server 2012 Hyper-V and add new SCSI disks, the VM becomes very slow while formatting those disks.

The "quick" formatting takes unusally long, for 20 GB disk it might take few minutes, for 200 GB it may take 30 minutes or more.

System Windows log is flooded with events:

Event ID: 129, Source: storvsc

Reset to device, \Device\RaidPort0, was issued.

It happens with either Integration tools versions: 6.2.9200.20873 or 6.2.9200.16384.

Hi All

I got a Message in Best Practice Analyzer regarding 4k Sector Size and vhdx Files on this Disk.

There is a Solution described here: http://social.technet.microsoft.com/wiki/contents/articles/13075.hyper-v-avoid-using-virtual-hard-disks-with-a-sector-size-less-than-the-sector-size-of-the-physical-storage-that-stores-the-virtual-hard-disk-file.aspx

But there is no Link or Information how to do this Resolution.

Are there any more Informations?

Hi,
I've had a Hyper-V running Windows Server 2008 for about two years. Today I did a Save on the VM in the Hyper-V Manager and then restarted my computer. When computer restarted I went to Start this VM and got the following error:

[Window Title]
Virtual Machine Connection

[Main Instruction]
The application encountered an error while attempting to change the state of 'WindowsServer2008'.

[Content]
'WindowsServer2008' failed to restore.

Microsoft Video Monitor (Instance ID BA8735EF-E3A9-4F1B-BADD-DBF3A5909915): Failed to restore with Error 'Catastrophic failure'.

[Expanded Information]
'WindowsServer2008' failed to restore. (Virtual machine ID 07307F40-CA38-4780-A62B-CD873410948D)

===============

The Event Viewer had no additional error information and just repeated the above messages. I did not change any monitor or drivers on my system. I started up a different VM on my system that runs Win 8.1 and that came up with no problem.

What can I try to fix this?

[Forum FAQ] Receive Side Scaling and Virtual Machine Queues Quick Start

$

Quick Review

  • RSS is Receive Side Scaling and is a commonly used technology to disperse network traffic among multiple CPU cores on a physical host to load balance processing.  Reliant on vendor implementation. RSS was first implemented with the scalable networking pack in 2003 SP2 and is still widely used today.
  • VMQ is Virtual Machine Queuing and is a commonly used technology to evenly disperse network traffic among multiple CPU cores on virtual machines on a Hyper-V host. Reliant on vendor implementation.
  • VRSS is VIRTUAL Receive Side Scaling and can be used to augment VMQ on VMs to increase throughput. VRSS is introduced in 2012 R2 and you must use 2012 R2 level OS for both the HOST and the VM.
  • VMQ Queues are maximum numbers of lanes (processor allocations) at a hardware level.
  • RSS Queues are maximum numbers of lanes (processor allocations) at a hardware level.
  • SR-IOV is another technology that can be paired with VMQ.

Hello.

at first excuse me for my bad English, it's not my native language.

I 'm a novice with hyper v and i need help to virtualize my personal home server.

i have 2 systems: a laptop with windows 8.1 pro (client) and a PC with windows server 2012 R2 Hyper-v enabled. (diffrent workgroups)

[laptop ip: 192.168.10.1] - [PC ip: 192.168.10.2]

1)how assign static ip to each vm?

2)Is it possible to automatically create virtual machines from template and set static ip automatically? (can be done with DHCP?? it is important when an VM created it's IP must be static, and when vm deleted ip back to pool[completely automatic])

3)how create a user group that have an limited right (shutdown, reset) [not admin] to control vm from console [just for controling vm not any other work]? please explain it.

4)when i try to connect vm console from my laptop (with hyper-v virtual machine connection) it say error loading vm->you dont have premission... Contact the administrator of the authorization policy.

5) Suppose we have 3 client that want connect to their VM. so client 1 must see just VM1 and not to be able see another vm in the list for connect. What should be done ?

6)how set login password for client?

If a person answers the questions  step by step with the images , has been a great help to beginners.

thank you.

IOV / SR-IOV / MR-IOV for non-network hardware?

$

I've been looking for real-world examples of this for a long time --
mainly because I'm trying to decide whether to restrict my build-options
to using only components which are all compatible with IOV.
I'm thinking that the constraint would be worth it,
if IOV could provide a significant performance benefit for non-network
peripherals such as storage, video processing, etc. (compared to
passthru / VT-d).
http://www.storage-switzerland.com/Articles/Entries/2010/9/29_Offloading_I_O_from_the_Hypervisor_with_SR-IOV.html ,
http://www.plda.com/white-paper-why-using-single-root-io-virtualization-sr-iov-can-help-improve-io-performance-and

Almost everything I've found about this is in the abstract or inapplicable to
multiple VMs in the same physical host.  Examples:

hypothetical use with HBAs or multiple graphics cards,
http://blog.scottlowe.org/2009/12/02/what-is-sr-iov ,
http://lists.xen.org/archives/html/xen-users/2013-04/msg00126.html ;

academic papers & theses, e.g.
http://cs.uccs.edu/~gsc/pub/master/mkopps/doc/MKoppsReportRev3.pdf ;

conference presentations, e.g.
http://searchstorage.techtarget.com/video/I-O-virtualization-video-SR-IOV-MR-IOV-NICs-and-more ;

hardware positioned between multiple hosts and a single peripheral, e.g.
http://topics-cdn.dell.com/pdf/poweredge-vrtx_User's%20Guide_en-us.pdf ;

and conceptual support for IOV in the spec for NVM Express.

I did find an actual physical product which claims IOV support,
the LSI 3008 chip, which is used in some mobos and LSI HBAs.
I've even found some posts by people with virtualization rigs
who discuss various aspects of having and using one of these products.
But I have yet to find anyone -- certainly not anyone at or below
the level of of "enthusiast", i.e. not anyone with a
non-"enterprise-class" environment or budget -- who discusses
even attempting IOV-based I/O other than for networking,
let alone actually achieving it, let alone anyone with even
subjective descriptions of performance differences.

If non-networking IOV has the great potential discussed in the links above,
can anyone tell me why it seems that no one is actually doing it?
Kihl? Braren? zir_blazer? ScottLowe? Don Fountain? Boesch? John Howard?
George Crump? Anyone? Anyone? Bueller?...

Unstall Hyper V Serve 2012 on Windows 8

I installed Hyper V Server 2012 on my Windows 8.1 laptop without thinking, but after I installed it the system is just starting in hyper V mode and I am unable to go back to Windows 8.1. I know at this point you should reboot your computer, but I have no idea how to do it. Anyone could walk me through it?

Deploying Hyper V on Cisco UCS (Converged networking in VMM or on hardware)

$

Hello Everyone

This is kind of a high level question and wanted to know peoples opinions on how to setup networking.  Currently we have a few clusters running on 6 1 x GB links and use converged networking to team all nics together and use VMM logical switches to split traffic up into management, cluster, live migration, and VM guest network which using Vlan tags to identify which vlan they are on.

With Cisco UCS we now have 10 GB networking and have the ability to split traffic up at the hardware level and still take advantage of shared bandwidth.  If i am understanding documentation right, I can carve up each nic into smaller Vnics and priortize traffic but still have the full bandwidth on link.

Just wondering what the pros and cons are for each setup.  The obvious one is moving converged networking to UCS is that it would take the network processing load out of host and into FIs.

Also we are using ISCSI with Nimble SANs.

Please let me know your thoughts and any hyper v best practices.

Thanks

How To Online A New Dynamic Drive

Having created a new, additional .vhdx drive for a VM, how do I bring it online? Windows Explorer doesn't show it. Device Manager sees it but its status is "offline".

This is on Win2012 Server R2.

Guest state not correct.

Running Hyper-V on windows 8.1 Pro.

The guest state is not updating when doing shutdown, restarting, starting.

When looking in Hyper-v Manager it just says Running in state column.

And the VM guest console window is just writeing standard Ctrl-Alt-Delete instead of what is actualy going on.

Any fix to this?

Error code 1603 while trying to install Integration Services on an XP Pro SP2 "repaired" P2V VM

$

This is actually a solution.  I'm posting in case someone else runs into this problem.

I was experimenting with a trying to revive a dead PC.  It was an old Pentium III running a legacy app that had a hard disk fail.  I had a very old Ghost image but recent "data-only" backups.

Since I didn't have a PC to spare, I decided to try to Ghost the old image onto a VHD.  I was successful--VHD mount by AppAssure was very helpful.

But booting the VM resulted in a BSOD.  No problem I thought.  A repair install using the XP Pro CD should get it going.  It did.  Successfully boots but lacked Integration Services.  Able to login as the old local admin account.

Tried to install Integration Services as usual but part way through,  after "...framework install" or "ustor...something" and during "guest services", I got a 1603 error code.

After much fussing around I found that deep in the log files in C:\Windows (look for the most recent ones), there was an error trying to create the directory:  C:\program files\Hyper-V Integration Services".  I was local admin and the folder permissions for C:\Program Files" explicitly had full control for the local admin account so I couldn't understand why there was a problem.  Just on a lark, I gave "Everyone" full control over "C:\program files" and afterwards, re-running the Integration Services carried on to finish.

I'm too much of a noob to know what happened but I'm just reporting what I found was the solution.

Uninstall Hyper-V Integration Services

Hello, I have a question about Hyper-V integration services.  I cannot figure out how to uninstall them in a Windows 2008 guest (it is easy in Windows Server 2003, its in Add/Remove Programs).  However, it does not appear in the uninstall Programs list (via Control Panel).  I have read online to simply run setup.exe /uninstall from the Integration Services setup files, but that isn't working either (referenced at: http://capitalhead.com/articles/uninstall-integration-services-from-hyper-v-windows-guest-virtual-machine.aspx).  Does anyone know how to uninstall these services?  (I have confirmed that the tools are indeed installed, all the features work and the services are listed in services.msc).  Thanks!

Move a VM created in Hyper-V 2012 to a Hyper-V 2008R2 Server

Hi Guys

I'm trying to move an Exchange 2010 server I created in Hyper-V 2012 to a Hyper-V 2008R2 Server. The files are in VHD format and I re-created the VM on the 2008R2 server and did not do an Export-Import.

Initially the Server would start up fine but I could not get the network card to work at all and the Disk Manager on the server would not display the drives.

I then re-inserted the Integration Services disc and it re-applied all the drivers. Now after restarting the server Windows just gets stuck on Preparing to configure windows and doesn't go any further.

Any ideas?

Hi,

I am trying to create a guest cluster using shared vhdx's as the means of storage.

But for some unknown reason I can't see my disks.

Although I can see them when I run a validation test. But it's telling me that the disk bus type does not support clustering.

Please see this screenshot.

Do you have any ideas?

Please can you help.

Thanks
