Dear sir,

Problem : Hyper-V failed to enable replication for virtual machine 'xxx' : Cannot create a file when that file already exists. (0x800700B7). Virtual machine ID 27bxxxxxxxx-xxxx-xxxx-xxxx-xxxxxxxxxxx

Replication scenario : I am getting this error while i am enabling the replication again as it was disturbed so i need to re-enable it. But getting upper error.

Replication for other two VMs are running. But other replication of two VMs are stopped so i have removed the replication and deleted the VM folder from replica. still it is showing as above and not enabling the replication.

Please help.

Mitesh.

Can't assign SID permissions to Hyper-v folder

I'm sure this isn't the place to ask this but I'm trying to restore a virtual machines permissions. When I execute the following command it fails with    invalid parameter "VIRTUAL"     in reference to the NT VIRTUAL part of the string, which is properly delimited.  I'm sure many in this group have run this before. Any idea's why!

icacls  "D:\Hyper-V\Virtual Machines\DevVM\" /T /grant "NT VIRTUAL MACHINE\5A6F2E44-7F95-4CF8-89E5-AE8A6648C93A":(F)

This similiar command worked fine.

icacls "C:\ProgramData\Microsoft\Windows\Hyper-V\Virtual Machines\5A6F2E44-7F95-4CF8-89E5-AE8A6648C93A.xml" /grant "NT VIRTUAL MACHINE\5A6F2E44-7F95-4CF8-89E5-AE8A6648C93A":(F) /L

Licencing Hyper-V VMs

Hi There,

We recently built 3 Hyper-V hosts with a number of VM's, we used Server 2012 R2 Data Centre for the hosts. We have the hosts Activated with a Volume Licence Key so that's all ok.

I recently deployed 3 virtual machines from a syspreped 2012 R2 standard Eval template. Now I want to activate them with the volume licence key I used for the Hosts.

When trying to licencing it normally through command slui 3 at elevated command prompt i get "This key cant be used to activate this edition of windows. Please try a different Key." after i enter it in the activation window.

So that's fine I move to try and activate it through DISM (My server has internet connection) using - C:\Windows\system32>DISM /Online /Set-Edition:ServerStandard /ProductKey:<My KEY> /AcceptEula but I get

Deployment Image Servicing and Management tool
Version: 6.3.9600.17031

Image Version: 6.3.9600.17031

Error: 1605

The specified product key is not valid for the target edition.
Run this command again with a product key that is correct for the target edition.

The DISM log file can be found at C:\Windows\Logs\DISM\dism.log

When I run the command I get

C:\Windows\system32>DISM /Online /Get-TargetEditions

Deployment Image Servicing and Management tool
Version: 6.3.9600.17031

Image Version: 6.3.9600.17031

Editions that can be upgraded to:

Target Edition : ServerStandard
Target Edition : ServerDatacenter

So that tells me i should be ok in upgrading the versions

So im at my last nerve trying to get this activated now im using slmgr.vbs /ipk <MY KEY> i get another error - Error:0xC004F069 On a computer running Microsoft Windows non-core edition, run 'slui.exe 0x2a 0xC004F069' to display the error test.

Am i just completely wrong in thinking my 2012 Datacentre R2 edition VL Key wont activate my VM's? I have been looking at that many forums etc im completely confused.

PLEASE HELP

Live Migration and OEM licensing

HI,

If I have a physical server with OEM Datacenter license running hyper v with some virtual machines and another physical server running hyper v, am I able to do a live migration of the VMs on the OEM physical server to the other physical server without running into licensing issues? I need to do this when I want to do maintenance on the physical server.

Hello,

i am trying to move a VM from a server which 2012 datacenter OS to a server which has 2012 R2 datacenter. But it is showing "cannot connect to rpc service on computer hyper-v manager", VM manager and RPC services are running. Is it possible to migrate from 2012 datacenter to 2012 R2 datacenter?

Unresponsive/slow VM while formating SCSI disk - Event ID 129.

Hello,

whenever I build new VM on our Server 2012 Hyper-V and add new SCSI disks, the VM becomes very slow while formatting those disks.

The "quick" formatting takes unusally long, for 20 GB disk it might take few minutes, for 200 GB it may take 30 minutes or more.

System Windows log is flooded with events:

Event ID: 129, Source: storvsc

Reset to device, \Device\RaidPort0, was issued.

It happens with either Integration tools versions: 6.2.9200.20873 or 6.2.9200.16384.

Dynamic Memory is not working all the time

We are in the process off moving our 2008R2 VM's from the 2008R2 HyperV servers to new Server 2012R2 Hosts.

We shut down the VM's copy the files and VHD's to the new CSV's en import the VM in the Hyperv Manager. Then we make them high available in the Failover Cluster Manager (Configure role - Virtual machine). We mount the integration tools and update the VM to version 6.3.9600.16384

For a specific type of VM (mostly RDS Host servers) we always had Dynamic Memory configured (when they were hosted on de 2008R2 platform), so we are using the same settings on the 2012r2 platform. The memory settings were;

Startup memory: 1024 MB

Minimum memory: 1024 MB

Maximum memory: 12288 MB

These VM's reboot every morning, this is done for specific reasons. But now once in a while (once per week/2 weeks) we notice that the VM's are not using more memory then 1024 MB while the demand is much higher. Rebooting the server helps most of the times, live migrating to another host also helps. In the VM we see that memory usage in the taskmanager is 99-100%, and after the move it immediately starts using more than the minimum configured amount.

Until the failover the memory usage was 1024 MB and it did not get any higher.

This happened several times. Last week we changed the Memory configuration to:

Startup memory : 2048 MB

Minimum memory: 2048 MB

Maximum memory: 12288 MB

But this morning we had a call about the performance of one of the VM's, We saw that it was only using 2 GB memory while the demand was much higher. After live migrating it to another host it started using more memory immediately.

The 2012R2 hosts are not overcommited, there is a lot of memory still available for the VM's. Those VM's never had this problem on the 2008R2 Hyperv platform.

Any idea why this happens?

Dynamic memory allocation failure

Dear reader,

We sometimes have a problem where our windows 2012 r2 RDS virtual servers, that reside on windows 2012r2 hyper-v hosts, loose their dynamic memory and only have their startup memory left to work with. Users start complaining that things are very slow etc.

If I check several screens (RDS Broker load balancing, hyper-v manager, cluster manager and the vm's task manager) it's clear that the vm only has its startup memory allocated. I'm not sure if this happens instantly or immidiatly after the nightly reboot. To resolve the problem we have to call all users on the vm where it happens and ask them to logoff (if they are even able to), and then we reboot the machine.

I have checked the logs from the machine where the VM resides on and the logs from the vm itself. But I cannot find anything. We also have alot of windows 2008r2 vm's with dynamivc memory, but none of those have ever had this problem.

Searched the internet, but so far it seems we are only.

Can anyone give me a lead to troubleshoot this?

Best regards,

License question for hyper v on Win Server 2012 Standard R2

I have read there are licensing restrictions with Hyper V for each Windows server 2012 R2 license, now I am confused as to weather this means the Windows Server license on VMs as in you can use it on a VM aswell as the host machine or it actually how many VMs you can have running anything (i.e. Linux).

I basically want to run  5-6 Linux VMs on my Windows Server 2012 R2 using Hyper V, is this allowed or does it break the licensing restrictions? Do I need the data centre as I can see you can have unlimited VMs on that?

Thanks for any advice, new to Hyper V as used VirtualBox in the past.

How to monitor the real memory usage inside a VM with dynamic memory enabled

$

Hi all,

we host an azure pack featured vm cloud. One of our customer complains that he cannot correctly monitor the used memory of his VMs (the others dont monitor it) because of dynamic memory.

The VM starts with 16 GB of memory and as it is a fresh installed server it obviously doesnt need that much RAM, so Hyper-V takes the memory back by filling it with it's baloon which results in the monitoring system alerting that the memory is full.
The task manager also shows the memory as 98% full, but if you look at the processes, you cannot see any process that fill up the RAM.

Now we can lower the amount of memory the VM gets at boot time, but that only masks the problem.

As we dont want to disable dynamic memory, can anyone please tell me how a customer can correctly monitor the used memory of his machines from INSIDE the VMs?

Thanks!

Hyper-V - Access Denied / Failing to move storage

Hi,

So I have been running into this issue and it is getting kind of annoying as I still don't really understand why it happens.

In the environment in which it happens I have the following elements:

* 2 files servers running windows 2012 r2 standard

     - Each file servers offers 2 iSCSI disks targets

* 2 Hyper-V core 2012 R2 servers

     - Each connects to the file servers via iSCSI

     - I have a Mirrored storage pool provisioned and a virtual disk on it which is then used as a CSV.

A lot of the time, when I try to move a VM to the cluster storage, the move fails at the end and the permissions on the files on the initial local storage of the hyper-v servers go away. Thus if I stop the machine it goes away from the system and I have to reimport it / redo the permissions on the files to get it running again.

Any idea on how to fix this ?

Thanks

VM Network Speed

Hi all

We have Hyper v 2012 r2 Failover Cluster running . When we copy some Gbs file from lets say Host 1 to Virtual Machines resides on Host1 .

Copy starts and network speed down to 0 kbps . VMQ is disable on Physical Network of Hyper V switch.

Please advise.  Below is the output of Checksum Offloading.

Name                           IpIPv4Enabled   TcpIPv4Enabled  TcpIPv6Enabled  UdpIPv4Enabled  UdpIPv6Enabled
----                           -------------   --------------  --------------  --------------  --------------
NIC                           Disabled        RxTxEnabled     RxTxEnabled     RxTxEnabled     RxTxEnabled

Should we disable Checksum Offloading or it is okay ?

Hyper-V External Switch suddenly not working after over a year of no problems!

I have Server 2008 R2, Windows 8, Server 2012 Essentials R2 installed in a tri boot machine and Windows 8.1 recently installed in another machine. The first machine has been running Hyper-V for over a year. I first started with Server 2008 R2 and then Windows 8. Both work with no issues. Then I tried Server 2012 Essentials about 6 months later. All worked no problem. I was trying to decide which one I wanted to use. This is a personal machine.

While out of town I tried to dial in and was having a problem so I asked my wife to reboot the machine. When that happened Microsoft installed an update. After that it was all downhill, I had no internet access for the host in any of the three machines. I have been searching through forums for several weeks and all I see for answers is make shift manuevers to delete and recreate the switch or uninstall Hyper-V and reinstall. I tried it all and it did not help.

I recently purchased another box and decided to put Windows 8.1 on it and install Hyper-V and try it on that machine since I had read about the drivers possibly being a problem. Even though I tried to reinstall my drivers on the tri boot machine and that did not work. Well after installing Hyper-V and creating the external switch the host lost the internet. I tried the delete the switch trick and recreate it and it did get me the internet back on this machine but when I went into the VM there was no network connection. No entry was in the Network & Sharing period.

So I am wondering how can I get the same problem with 4 different Microsoft OS products on two different computers and how come there is no clear fix from Microsoft for this problem?

My only choice now is install VMware workstation, which I dread because of the disk conversions I will have to do. They take so long to process.

Does anyone have any real answers to this problem?

Deleting Hyper V Snapshot

Dear Hyper V Expert,

I am doing a setup on new windows 2008 R2 VM using Hyper V. Currently, I have finished install the VM and I am now plan to install the applications. Before I am installing the applications, I have taken a snapshot, so if anything happen during the application installation, I could go back to the previous state whereby my applications has not been installed state.

Now, the applications installation has been finished and it seems that there is no issue happen. since snapshot is taking disk space from time to time, I would like to merge this snapshot into the main VM just to finalized that I don't need the snapshot anymore as the application installation has been successful.

May I know how am I going to do that safely? is it that I need to delete the snapshot and it will merge automatically into the VM?

Thanks.

Dear Hyper V Expert,

I am using windows server 2012 standard for my hyper v server. Currently we have 4 VM inside. However, suddenly one of my VM has only 16 colors when I connect it via the hyper v manager, while others VM are OK. the VM is using the Windows Server 20008 R2. I tried to convert to .vhdx and open it on another hyper v server, the issue still the same. please find the picture below:

Thanks.

Interrupted VM stuck

I was doing updates on my 2012R2 Hyper-V VM and power dropped. When I booted my host PC back up the VM would start and say Hyper-V Updating your system (x%) and get stuck at 5%. I can't get past this and I have no snapshots/backups of the VM. Is there anyway to recover this VM?

Hyper-V Storage Design

$

Hey all. I'm finishing up the design for a Symantec Enterprise Vault solution that is going to get migrated from physical hosts to a new Hyper-V implementation. (Complete app migration, not just a P2V.)

For those unfamiliar with the product, EV has two primary storage requirements; slow storage for the actual archived items, and fast storage for the indexes of that content.

The storage backend is going to be a NetApp SAN with two filers, one dedicated to SATA and one dedicated to SAS.  The Hyper-V VMs (3 of em) are going to run on a Hyper-V cluster, consisting of two same-rack physical servers.

The slow storage is easy, as it can just use a standard CIFS share.  The fast storage is what I'm concerned about.

My plan was to use two cluster-shared volumes (both would be FC LUNs from the SAS filer).  The first will hold the VHDs for the VM OS's.  The second will hold VHDs for the indexes. (3 VMs and 3 indexes, so each VM gets an OS VHD and an index VHD.)

The only concern I have is with those index VHDs.  (Yes, by VHD I mean VHDX.)  They're going to start at about 4 TB each, and could grow as big as 7 TB.  That's a lot of data to be sitting in a single file, and I'm wondering if I'm overlooking an easier way to present those indexes to their corresponding VMs.

Thoughts?  Thanks!
