Error when creating VHDX via Hyper-V Manager remotely

Hey all!

So, I installed Hyper-V 2012 Core on a box, patched it, and then joined it to the domain. If I connect to the server via Hyper-V Manager from either a Windows 8 machine or Server 2012 machine and try to create a VM, it says "There was an unexpected error in configuring the hard disk on [Insert VM Name Here]." I feel like I've tried everything. I can not create the disk manually via the Manager on its own, before or after the VM being created. I can, however, create the disk via PowerShell with out a problem! Via PowerShell, I can create a dynamic VHDX disk every time without an issue.

I was curious if anyone has had this problem and/or knows a solution.

Thanks in advance!

Windows freezing up after Hyper-V installation

I have seen similar threads but throughout my searches I haven't seen anything that mirrors my situation. I have tried numerous times to re-install both Server 2012 r2 and Windows 8.1 to enable hyper-v, I get the same issue every time.

In Windows 8.1 I can get Hyper-V to install but every action I try to perform, such as opening Internet Explorer or even switching from the desktop to the start screen takes literally minutes sometimes up to 10 for me to see any response. In server 2012 r2 I can not even log in and get to the desktop most of the time it hangs either at the Windows logo screen and the one time I did get all the way to server manager the hyper-v role showed in server manager but says the installation failed. I have had SOME luck but not much getting into safe mode in server 2012 r2 after the install.

I have an i7-3770k with a DZ77GAL-70K motherboard and contacted intel who apparently put together a test machine with the same specs and did not have any issue. The only similar threads I have seen refer to Gigabyte boards with USB 3.0 (which I disabled as a test) and the Azalia codec so I disabled the onboard audio with no resolution. I have tried before and after installing all of Windows updates for 8.1 and server 2012 and intel drivers with all the same outcome. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

How we configure Point to Site VPn for two different Virtual Networks (Vnet1 and Vnet2)

HI

Can you please help me out here this below scenario

Scenario :

I have created two Point to site VPN’s and appended Vnet1 and Vnet 2 to VPN-1 ,Vnet2  & Vnet3 to VPN2.  (note : Vnet1 and Vnet2 are Site to Site connected ).

Now I am facing a challenge if anyone connected through VPN-1 should SSH the VM’s (which are located under Vnet1 and Vnet2 Virtual Networks)  but here we cannot SSH the VM which is located under Vnet2 , only we can SSH to Vm’s under Vnet1 only .

We can able to SSH the VM under Vnet2  from Vnet1 VM ,  Since Vnet1-Vnet2 are Connected . The same problem we seeing in VPN-2  as well .

If this is the case then we need three Point to site VPN’s Instead of Two Vpn’s right  ? , Please suggest me what is the best solution here or correct me if I did any mistake in configurations.

Thanks

Hyper-v 2012 - Installing SBS 2008 as a VM fails

Trying to install SBS 08 as a VM on a newly installed HyperV. We have allocated 4GB RAM and 128GB HD on ide0. The install goes through expanding file process reboots and then comes up with "Windows Setup could not configure Windows on this computer’s hardware."

This seems to relate to an intel Hard Disk driver when searching technet but this seems strange for installing server 2008 on a hyperv server. I would have thought that this would be a relatively easy process?

Hyper-v server is installed i.e. not as a role on server 2012. Any help would be appreciated.

Also a single legacy NIC is allocated to the VM and the VHD format is VHDx. 2 processors allocated as well.

HyperV Manager cannot connect to local server

Hi,

My HyperV server (GUI) host has 3 virtual machines guests - all  of them are critical servers, suddenly the host is unable to connect to local server and thus I am unable to manage 3 virtual machines, however all 3 guests are online are accessible.

I have checked the VMM service and is running fine, i am receiving same error when logged in as a local admin instead of domain admin. Now one of the virtual machines is having problem and I am unable to manage i cannot connect to HyperV from remote system as well. When i logged on to the Server Manager, the automatic refresh is failing as per below,

Manageability from Server Manager is showing following error, Online - Data retrieval failures occured.

Moreover when i click add remove features I receive following error, Server Manager is collecting inventory data. The wizard will be available after data collection finishes. I have not shut down the guests and restarted the host, i fear i might not be able to connect to them as they are critical.

Please note that the host is not in any type of high availability yet, any help on this would really be appreciated, thanks.

Win2012R2 VM internet access via WIFI fine but not through a client's Web Proxy Server

Hi

I have a number of VMs running on my win 8.1 laptop. They normally access the internet via the host WIFI in a bridged config.  No real issues tho sometimes it takes a reboot to clear out any stale DNS  entries.

Now when I go on a client site my internet access on the host laptop is via a web proxy on a LAN connection. If I want this same access running on a standalone "all in" VM , I have a issue since it does not know about the web proxy and it is not even on the client's LAN . No internet, means no Azure or Office 365.....

So this doesn't make any difference

Is there a way around this .. do I need share a folder/drive   or authenticate myself on the Proxy, from the VM.

Anyone had this issue?

Stopping-Critical

$

Hi there,

I have a customer hyper-v guest server (Main), and whenever I try and shut it down, it does not shut down, instead it goes into a "Stopping-Critical" state, and just says there. The only way to get the server off is to Taskkill the hyper-v service, and then reboot the Host server. If I just try and reboot the host, it will freeze at 'shutting down the hyper-v service', and then at that point we have to pull the power out of it to get it to turn off!

They had a couple of power cuts over a few days, and then this Stopping-Critical problem started happening.

If I do a restart on the hyper-v guest server (Main), it will restart fine, and it is running fine also. It is running Active Directory and also Exchange.

How can I find out what is causing this Stopping-Critical message?

Thanks in advance,

Steve.

SCVMM 2012 SP1 Virtual Switch on Cluster Node Disappears

$

I have been running into an interesting but an alarming issue with virtual switches. I have recently built a 4 node Server 2012 Hyper-V failover cluster. I have built numerous 2008R2 and 2012 Hyper-V clusters before, so I am pretty familiar with the process. I have rebuilt my VMM due to software problems, and on this new cluster, I have configured the virtual switches with nic teaming on 2 of the virtual switches.

I have 4 clusters being managed by this VMM.. and this newly built cluster keeps losing all of the VMM virtual switch configurations, meaning if I go to properties on the problem host and click on virtual switches, its blank. Refresh host cluster flags all virtual machines in this cluster as "Unsupported Configuration," making the vm unmanageable via VMM.

Information (26844)
Virtual switch (Virtual Switch Name) is not highly available because the switch is not available in host (One of the Hyper-V Hosts).

Recommended Action

All virtual servers on that host still has connectivity, as all virtual switch configs are normal when looking at it with Hyper-V Manager or Failover Cluster Manager..

The workaround is to evacuate the host using Failover Cluster Manager and reboot the host. Then refresh the host. Then refresh the VM's. I cannot consider this a 'workaround' as I cannot be rebooting my hyper-V hosts every week.. and migrating virtual servers constantly just for this reason. (DPM backups have a FIT with csv's if it tries to backup a vm on a same csv as another vm thats being migrated.)

I have been wrestling with this problem for a few weeks now. The cluster has been slicked and completely rebuilt.. Still same problems. Has ANYONE else out there seen this issue? Does ANYONE out there suggest a way to go about further troubleshooting this issue?

Exchange VM lost network connectivity from different subnet

Hi all,

Few times i have faced anniong issue. All times it was issue with Exchange 2010 VM's (Different Exchange servers from different domains). HyperV 2008 R2 and 2012 R2.

Server lost network connectivity from all other subnets. But in local subnet everithing is Ok. Most of communications is in local subnet but send/receive connectors stops working. After VM reboot everything becomes fine.

MAybe this is not HyperV issue but I saw those problems only vith virtualized Exchanges.

Maybe someone have seen similar issues and can provide solution.

Clean Way To Prevent Signature Collision Of Mounting VHDX In Parallel PowerShell Scripting

$

I have multiple Virtual Machines I am to build from a Sysprepped VHDX. (All this is done automatically via Powershell)

For each of these Virtual Machines, I copy this VHDX and create a new one unique to the Virtual Machine. However, I wish to mount each one (in parallel) and make modifications before attaching it to the virtual machine and booting the first time.

The issue comes when it is time to mount the VHDX on the Physical Host, and these two processes attempt to mount at the same time. This causes a Signature Collision. I am looking for a clean - emphasis on clean - way to prevent signature collision. I have tried the following.

Using the Get-Drive cmdlet and determining if one exist with a FriendlyName of "Microsoft Virtual Disk" before mounting, to detect if another VHDX is already mounted and waiting til it dismounts - the latency in this flag being available causes this method to fail and still the two VHDXs attempt to mount and have signature collision, breaking the script associated with that VHDX.

I have tried using a Flag file, i.e., a text file to denote if a VHD is mounted and do a similar check - however, this relies on the file system and seems too clumsy for me.

I have considered Environment variables, but am afraid this is also too convoluted for such a simple task.

Any recommendations?

Preconfigure Failover-clustering in other domain

Hello,

i a few weeks i am doing a migration on a hyper-v-platform.

Until that moment, i want to preconfigure the new hardware including hyper-v as far as possbile.

For this... i need a domain for configuring Failover-clustering etc.

Is it possible/recommended to:

1)  add the hyper-v-hosts to a different domain

2) set-up failover-clustering etc. to test live-migration of Virtual machines

3) When this platform is physical added to the existing environment --> change domain-membership of hosts to other domain and change cluster-settings

Are these steps possible or will this be mess at the end?

Thx

Hello,

We are trying to move a physical server into a virtual one using hyper V. We have the image installed and running on hyper v however it will only boot into DSRM. Attempting to boot into any other mode results in a BSOD with an error message of:

STOP: c00002e2 A device attached to the system is not functioning. Error status: 0xc0000001

The system will boot into DSRM without a problem and will allow me to log into the local account. How can I get full functionality?

Quite simply, I have a VM with two snapshots, and I can't delete them.

When I run Get-VMSnapshot -VMName <VirtualMachine> | Remove-VMSnapshotin an elevated PowerShell console on the hosting Hyper-V server, I get the following error:

Windows 2012 R2 Hyper-V Backup

$

I have searched the web and have not found a definitive answer about Windows Server 2012 R2, Hyper-V and Windows Server Backup. We will have a Hyper-V Host running Windows Server 2012 R2. All of the Hyper-V Guest Virtual Machines will be running Windows Server 2012 R2. We will have a Domain Controller, SQL Server 2012 and Exchange Server 2013 running as Virtual Machines. A second physical server will be our primary domain controller, also running Windows Server 2012 R2. Can Windows Server Backup, running on the Hyper-V host, perform an application-consistent backup of the Hyper-V guest domain controller, SQL Server and the Exchange Server? Also, The SQL Server Guest and Exchange Server Guest will have multiple VHDX drives that are on separate volumes on the Hyper-V host. Will the multiple vhdx drives on different volumes cause an issue? We are a small shop so will not be using any Hyper-V fail-over. Just Hyper-V guests running on drives that are on the physical Hyper-V host. Any clarification will be appreciated.

VM server locking up with 153 Disk warnings

I have a 2012 host running Hyper-V. There are 3 guest VMs all running Server 2012. One of them has started experiencing a problem where it will lock up with the only way to get at it is to do a Turn Off in Hyper-V Manager.

The problem always occurred during the nightly backups. Windows Server Backup is used and the destination is a VHDX file located on a removable cartridge on the host server. This is the same setup for all 3 VMs. The other two do not have any problem with this and this one has operated for about a year without a problem with this. I can do a one time backup using the same parameters as the scheduled backup and they all complete successfully with no lockup of the server.

I finally deleted the VHDX file and created a new one. I also deleted the backup job and created a new one. Backups ran fine for just over a week, then the lockups of the server started again.

The only seemingly consistent evidence I can find is 153 Disk warnings in the System log. These seem to occur during the backup process. My research indicates some sort of disk system problem.

Any ideas?

Jonathan
