Hello,

i am creating 3 seperate networks for our Hyper-v Environment :

- Core

- Live Migration

- Production

When a multiple network-cards are teamed, the description of a team is : "Microsoft Network Adapter Multiplexor Driver".

I want to change this name to the network-name like "core".

Is this possbile form Hyper-v Server 2012R2 Core?

Thx

hyper-v cpu monitoring - instance mapping

Hi,

I try to monitor the guest processors on a  hyper-v cluster using Hyper-V Hypervisor Logical Processor %Guest Run Time and %Total Run Time.

The instances have quite confusing names: "Hv LP xx" where xx is the instance number. How can I find out, which processor maps to which vm?

Thanks in advance,

Tim

Cluster Validation - Validate Network Communication failure HELP

Hi,

I have a eight node cluster which is all up running and working a treat but when I run the Cluster Validation I receive this warning for each host. I have also included the top few lines of the tests. This warning is repeated from each node to every other node in the cluster.

Warning:

Node HYP01N02.domain.uk is reachable from node HYP01N01.domain.uk by multiple communication paths, but one or more of these paths experienced more than 10% packet loss.

Each node has:

iSCSI1 VLAN101 is a 1x 10Gb port and iSCSI2 VLAN 116 is a 1x 10Gb port configured with MPIO

Trunk1 (4x 1Gb NIC) (Address Hash, LACP) on which sits a team with vEthernet (Management) VLAN 101 and vEthernet (Cluster) VLAN 104

Trunk10 (2x 10Gb NIC) (Hyper-V Port, LACP) on which sits a second team with VM traffic and vEthernet (Migration) VLAN 105

Trunk1 and Trunk10 are configured with LACP and locked down to the relevant VLANs on the switch as well as on the vNICs. (Don't know if its best practise to leave the trunk open to all VLANs if the NICs are configured in Hyper-V with VLANs or have both set like they currently are)

iSCSI1 is on VLAN 101 and ip range of 10.100.1.x

iSCSI2 is on VLAN 116 and ip range of 10.100.2.x

vEthernet (Management) is on VLAN 100 and on ip range 172.21.59.12

vEthernet (Cluster) and vEthernet (Migration) are also on there own VLANs and ip ranges.

iSCSI1 and iSCSI2 only has ip v4 and ip v6 left enabled and DNS registration and NETBIOS disabled.  They do have Jumbo frames enabled.

Each network can talk over the relevant NIC or vNIC to the other hosts on the same NIC or vNIC which is correct and not across networks which they shouldn't so (Migration) to (Cluster) etc which is also correct.

(Cluster) and (Migration) only allow cluster communications

(Management) accepts cluster and client communications.

iSCSI1 and iSCSI2 are set to NOT allow any cluster traffic.

Binding Order:

1.Management
2.iSCSI1
3.iSCSI2
4.Migration
5.Cluster

Cluster metric is 900 and Migration 1000.

I still receive the warning below and I assume its because some how when testing, there seems to be a tiny conection across VLANs and ip ranges from iSCSI1 or iSCSI2 to the vNIC (Management) which shouldn't be the case. I assume the error is because of the highlighted line of the table???

Can anyone suggest anything, it is driving me mad! Things seem to work properly but I need the test to complete correctly to be able to sign the clients environment off.

I'm surprised that there is (even if a little) any chat between iSCSI and vEthernet Management according to the test even though they are on different physicalNICs, IP range an even VLANs. Also, trying  to establish if the warning is just that a warning or something to be concerned about. Obviously with all networks broken up as they are, there will be multiple paths between each node of which many are locked down so they cant talk.

Concern is that although it all works fine and even the results read right, I have never seen the warning before in any implementation even when broken up by VLANs, IP ranges and virtual or physical NICs.

Hyper-V Replica for Exchange and SQL - Confused

$

Hi,

I am confused as to what the actual position is regarding the use of Hyper-V Replica when a VM runs either Exchange or SQL, i have read several threads on this. in server 2012 R2 i can quite clearly see three different recovery snapshots for the replica VM:

latest recovery point

standard recovery point

application consistent recovery point.

I thought that if the hyper-v replica server integrates with the VSS writer of the VM and provides an application consistent recovery point, then it should be consistent for Exchange and SQL? what is the latest recovery point based on, is this non consistent with applications?

thanks

Steve

VHD and VHDX won't Compact

I also have the same problem.

If I compact a VHD or VHDX the compact runs for one second and ends, and the VM's remain uncompacted.

I am using REFS format on the drive, and the VM's are Windows 7 x86, if that makes any difference.

I have disabled System Restore in VM's, as that was a known problem with 2008 R2.

Can this be reported as a bug in Server 2012 RC.

Stopping-Critical

Hi there,

I have a customer hyper-v guest server (Main), and whenever I try and shut it down, it does not shut down, instead it goes into a "Stopping-Critical" state, and just says there. The only way to get the server off is to Taskkill the hyper-v service, and then reboot the Host server. If I just try and reboot the host, it will freeze at 'shutting down the hyper-v service', and then at that point we have to pull the power out of it to get it to turn off!

They had a couple of power cuts over a few days, and then this Stopping-Critical problem started happening.

If I do a restart on the hyper-v guest server (Main), it will restart fine, and it is running fine also. It is running Active Directory and also Exchange.

How can I find out what is causing this Stopping-Critical message?

Thanks in advance,

Steve.

Losing Access to Cluster Shared Volumes: Cluster Shared Volume 'Volume1' ('CSV Disk1') has entered a paused state because of '(c0000435)'

Hi,

Just built a Server 2012 R2 Hyper-V failover cluster connected to Equallogic 4110 storage arrays with latest firmware and HIT kits.
When creating a clone or vm from a template we see that the cluster loses access to the storage csv volume that is hosted on the equallogic storage with the following errors:

Cluster Shared Volume 'Volume1' ('CSV Disk1') has entered a paused state because of '(c0000435)'. All I/O will temporarily be queued until a path to the volume is reestablished.

Can anyone shed any light onto this issue?

I have a SuperMicro server X9SCL with Intel(R) Xenon CPU E3-1230 V2 @3.30GHZ with 12 bays, each bay/slot has a 3TB Sata hard drive and 16gb ram.  The server has 2 nics also.  I am setting up hyper-v host and would like to know the best way to set this server up to host the following VM's : Active Directory, FreeNas for fileserver, Airwatch, Development environment, QA, etc. Would like to put into a failover cluster as well with another matching server.

How to create VLAN in standalone Hyper-V

$

Hi,

I have installed Windows 2012 R2 on HP DL Server and done the teaming as per below on physical box

NIC1 + NIC2 = Team 1

NIC3+ NIC4 = Team 2

Now, we are planning to create two VMs with different subnet then base OS –

Base OS Subnet = 192.168.10.1/24

VM1 Subnet = 192.168.20.1/24

VM2 Subnet=192.168.30.1/24

Please let me know how to achieve this by hyper-v networking.

Hyper-V 2012R2 Manager doesn't work, but 5nine does!

Hey guys!

Got a very weird one for ya! So the details:

 - Server 2012R2 Hyper-V Core

 - Microsoft remote management document followed to enable remote access

 - John Howard's HVRemote config utility run several times

 - Manually opened ports, enable firewall rules, DCOM permissions, remote permissions, etc, etc

 - Installed COREFIG (for 2012, not 2008 version), open source Hyper-V management utility to verify all is enabled and working.

 - Changed RPC dynamic ports to 50000-50100 to no avail

What works:

 - Remote server management works (user, groups, event logs, disk management, etc)

 - Can RDP into host machine, no problem.

 - Can see file shares localy and over the web

 - Can use third party software (Corefig and 5nine Manager) to control machine

What doesn't work:

 - Hyper-V manager

However, install 5nine manager (free client) and have full admin control over host (create VM's, start/stop/pause, VLAN management, etc)

Even if I disable software and hardware firewall's, no change. The Hyper-V manager will not connect with error "RPC server unavailable"

What's even weirder, if I start the Hyper-V manager, I get the RPC error. If I then click the "refresh" button (on the right Actions panel) it then connects and shows me status, but I cannot change or interact with anything. It's almost like it's ignoring the RPC error and trying to connect anyway.

I have spent weeks on this and am no closer to a solution. If it wasn't for the 5Nine Hyper-V FREE client, I'd be seriously boned! :P

Any advice would be welcome, and thanks in advance.

difference between virtual memory and phusical memory

Guys,

When adding virtual memory to a machine in a hyper-v environment, one can use less memory than in a physical pc. Why is that? Whats the difference between a virtual dc with 750 m virtual memory and a physical dc with 2 gb memory?

Windows 2012 Hyper-V Manager says Virtual Machine Status "Backing Up" Why?

$

What is going on?

I have 4 VMs running on Windows 2012 Datacenter.   They stopped responding so I took a look at Hyper-V Manager.

The status of the VMs say "Backing up".   I cannot shut the VMs down, either.   Well eventually they STOP, but no save or graceful shutdown.

I have not configured backups.   I've never seen this message before.

The VMs DO have Windows Server Backup installed and DO back themselves up using the Scheduler but they back themselves up to a network volume.   Hyper-V Manager should not know anything about this.

How do I get them out of this state?

new hyper v set up

I am wanting to set up the Hyper-v roll on a server to use 2-3 virutal machines. I have a server running 2008 r2 enterprise that runs our exchange 2010. We have 10 users that have exchange mail boxes currently. Not a high traffic server. Would I be ok to install Hyper-v  to run 2-3 windows xp machines? The server is an HP DL585 g2 with 40 gb of ram and 4 2.8 ghz dual core processors. The exchange server uses about 6 gb of ram currently. Is it better to just run hyper-v on a dedicated server? or would this be ok to do?

Identifying the VM host for all Virtual Machines

$

We are preparing a licensing report for a budget planning meeting and I have been asked by management to create a report which:

1. Identifies all the Hyper-V host in my domain.

2. Identifies the guest VMs on each Hyper-V host

3. Identifies the type of server OS running (either Enterprise or Data Center).

Has anyone create a similar Powershell script for this information? or what would you advise?

Thanks

FailOver Clustering w/ HA

$

Hey Guys,

I have the below equipment and wanted to create a failover cluster environment for some Hyper-V machines i am currently running :

2 x Windows 2012 R2 Servers with 4TB SSD(2TB RAID10) 4 x 1Gbe

1 x Synology NAS 2x1Gbe

Basically i don't want to do  a SAN with the synology because this will leave me with a single point of failure. Instead i wanted to use the RAID arrays in the servers for my cluster storage. So here are my questions :

If i did NIC teaming with the 4x1Gbe NICs, could i create a iSCSI target cluster with both servers, then use this environment as a HA storage cluster for my Hyper-V cluster? Would this provide HA for nodal failure?

I have searched for this solution, but i can't see to find it.. which leads me to believe it is not possible for some reason and i have seen the SIOS and StarWinds software(which are really expensive) could u tell me why this solution would not work and given my hardware make suggestions?

Problems PXE booting Gen 2 Virtual Machines after Upgrading to Windows Server 2012 R2

$

My Current Setup:

I have two virtual machines set up with Hyper V on my Windows Server 2012 Server.

VM1: Configured to boot from an ISO file and runs Clonezilla server.

VM2: Configured to PXE boot using a legacy network adapter, and with a passthrough 250Gb hard disk.

These two VMs are connected to an external Virtual Switch, which allows physical machines to PXE boot to the Clonezilla server.

For the past few months I have been using this setup for two purposes:

1. To clone physical machines to the Clonezilla virtual server (as a backup).

2. To restore those image to the second VM if I find that need to get access to the files on the original image..

This has worked perfectly, except for the fact that the speed of the legacy network adapter on the second VM (which is required to PXE boot) is very slow. But I know this is because of the limitations in how the legacy adapter works...

-------------------------------------------------------------

Now my problem:

I found out that Gen 2 VMs allow you to PXE boot without having use a legacy network adapter, allowing me to image back to the VM faster. So I upgraded the Server to Server 2012 R2 . I then created the same two virtual machines on the R2 server. I can still PXE boot the Gen 1 VM to the Clonezilla Server but I cannot get the Gen 2 VMs to PXE boot properly. They get an IP address from the Clonezilla Server but then just stop with the following screen. (note: I have disabled the Secure Boot).

Are Gen 2 VMs unable to pull down images from anything other than a WDS Server?

Add-VMNetworkAdapterExtendedAcl and a subnet as a RemoteIPAddress parameter

$

0

Hello,

I get some strange results using an Add-VMNetworkAdapterExtendedAcl cmdlet.

If I provide a subnet address as a RemoteIPAddress parameter  - the Add-VMNetworkAdapterExtendedAcl cmdlet doesn't work as expected,

-RemoteIPAddress <any subnet address> works exactly as -RemoteIPAddress ANY.

But according to the documentation here http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/dn464289.aspx
and here http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/dn375962.aspx#bkmk_detailed
it's possible to use a subnet address with RemoteIPAddress.

My environment (Steps to reproduce):

1) I have a physical server with a Windows Server 2012 R2 with kb2919355 and hyper-v role installed and a VM with a public IP-address and guest OS Windows Server 2008 R2 SP1.

Hyper-V switch which is used by the VM configured as follows:

PS C:\> Get-VMSwitch External | fl AllowManagementOS
AllowManagementOS : False

No any VMNetworkAdapterAcl or VMNetworkAdapterExtendedAcls configured for the VM.

2) ping <VM IP-address> -t from outside networks works.

3) ping google.com (or something pingable) -t from VM OS works.

4) I run a following command on the hyper-v host:

Add-VMNetworkAdapterExtendedAcl -VMName test -Action Deny -Direction Outbound -Protocol "1" -Weight 11 -RemoteIPAddress 10.0.0.0/24

Both ping commands started to return "Request timed out" at once,
despite the fact that there are no hosts from 10.0.0.0/24 subnet in the test environment.

Here is the VMNetworkAdapterExtendedAclconfig:

ParentAdapter      : Microsoft.HyperV.PowerShell.VMNetworkAdapter
Direction          : Outbound
Action             : Deny
LocalIPAddress     : ANY
RemoteIPAddress    : 10.0.0.0/24
LocalPort          : ANY
RemotePort         : ANY
Protocol           : 1
Weight             : 11
Stateful           : False
IdleSessionTimeout : 0
IsolationID        : 0
ToRemove           : False

5) Running Get-VMNetworkAdapterExtendedAcl -VMName test | Remove-VMNetworkAdapterExtendedAcl restores ping replies.

I guess I can use any valid IPv4 network address instead of 10.0.0.0/24 and I will get the same result (I've already tried 123.0.0.0/8 and so on)

Using a single IP-address instead of subnet works without any problem.

So, is that a bug?
