HP Storage Works Error

I have an HP storage works that is not working after a restart.

In the "Automated Storage Manager" (that seems to be more trouble then its worth), my User-Defined device which connects as a ISCSI is coming up with the following error: "Failed to find volume, ensure volume is mounted"

I can see the vhd file that this User-Defined setup is looking for, no clue. I have a server down right now as it can not access the virtual disk associated with this issue.

HELP PLEASE!!!!!!!

Error when creating VHDX via Hyper-V Manager remotely

Hey all!

So, I installed Hyper-V 2012 Core on a box, patched it, and then joined it to the domain. If I connect to the server via Hyper-V Manager from either a Windows 8 machine or Server 2012 machine and try to create a VM, it says "There was an unexpected error in configuring the hard disk on [Insert VM Name Here]." I feel like I've tried everything. I can not create the disk manually via the Manager on its own, before or after the VM being created. I can, however, create the disk via PowerShell with out a problem! Via PowerShell, I can create a dynamic VHDX disk every time without an issue.

I was curious if anyone has had this problem and/or knows a solution.

Thanks in advance!

After WS2012-R2 Update, Hyper-V Network Issues

Hey Everyone, Have a really strange issue after upgrading a HP DL385 G7 from WS2012 to R2. After the upgrade Hyper-V VMs ceased to have network activity. I could not get the network adapters in the VMs to do anything. Host OS NIC was ok after resetting IP Info. 1 Interface for Host, 3 in NIC Team for Hyper-V.

Network Adapters: Two HP NC382i Integrated Dual Port Multifunction Gigabit Server Adapters

(Main Server: Listed as Broadcom BCM5709C NetXtreme II GigE (NDIS VBD Client)  ....???

(Backup Server: Listed as HP NC382i DP Multifunction Gigabit Server Adapter)

We also have a backup server, the EXACT same, DL385 G7, that is working (and now currently operating as server with VHDs copied from main server since main is down) that has been running WS2012R2 for a couple months now.

Here's basically how the process has gone so far:

1. Upgraded to WS2012R2 (all files were left in tact), Windows Updates, then realized NICs weren't working correctly

 a. Checked NIC Team, V-Switch & NIC Settings in VMs...Removed, Re-Add NICs to VMs (with correct VLAN IDs)

 b. Reset IP Info inside VMs, Uninstalled (including hidden/unused) NICs from Device Manager, Re-Add & Config (This is how I got Host OS to work again)

 c. Updated to latest drivers from HP's site

 d. Uninstall Hyper-V role, Re-Install Hyper-V role, Create new VMs, Configure

2. Fresh Install of WS2012R2, Windows Updates, Configure Server & NICs/Team, Install Hyper-V, Create VMs (same VHDs)

 a. Installed latest HP drivers again, then steps A & B (from above) again

 b. Installed latest "Broadcom" drivers, then steps A & B (from above) again

 c. Tried backing up NIC drivers from backup server and restoring them to main server, but it hasn't worked...

 d. Uninstalled Drivers and right now i'm sitting with Microsoft's default drivers that it has found (Broadcom BCM5709C NetXtreme II GigE (NDIS VBD Client)

Does anyone have any clues? And possibly a good method to backup the drivers from the server that is working and restoring them to the server that isn't working?

Windows 8.1 pro hyper-v memory usage

Hello,

I'm running windows 8.1 pro on a laptop with 8gb of ram. When running hyper-v i noticed that windows never seems to use more then 85% of the system memory (something that never happened in 8).

Take a look at the following screenshot:

Image

Windows says 1247mb available, 120mb free and 1127mb standby!

Is this normal? is there any reason why windows refuses to use the standby memory for the VM needs?
Thanks.

Best regards, Johnny Tordgeman.

Domain Controller on top of Hyper-V - Firewall problem

$

Hi!

I have:

1. A single physical server which is a Hyper-V host running Windows Server 2012 R2.

2. A single Windows Server 2012 R2 Essentials Guest VM running on top and acting as a domain controller.

Now I have researched a lot whether I should join the host to the domain running on top of it or leave it in a separate workgroup. There is no best practice but many sources confirm that this is possible and joining the domain offers many management benefits, e.g. here see Option #4:

http://blogs.msdn.com/b/virtual_pc_guy/archive/2008/11/24/the-domain-controller-dilemma.aspx

Now the problem is that after having joined the host to the domain sometimes everything works fine and the host manages to join the domain on startup but sometimes this seems to fail - I think that the join process times out as the DC in the Guest VM does not start up in time. In this case the firewall tells me that the host is connected to a "public network" instead of the "domain network" and I cannot connect to the server via remote desktop as this is not allowed by default. If I disable and reenable the network adapter the "domain network" is recognized fine but this has to be done manually.

I wonder if anyone else has experienced this problem and can recommend some good workaround.

Thanks in advance.

Hyper-V Manager fails to boot from eith an image or disk drive

I have created a Hyper-V system and originally have gotten an iso file and a Windows Server 2003 CD to boot in order to create a new virtual server.  However recently I found that in either case, I cannot create a new virtual server either from a boot CD or an iso image.  I get the message "Boot failure. Reboot and select proper boot device or Insert Boot Media in selected boot device". I have made sure that none of my existing virtual machines are running when I try doing this.  I have been searching the web but have not found any references to this problem.  Patches are being maintained on the host server and any virtual machines I create from existing VHD's work fine.  I have tested the CD to insure that it will boot on another system.  Any help will be appreciated.

VDI not logging off stays as disconnected

I have a number of users who don't know how to log off on a vdi desktop so they are just rebooting the host machine and this causes there session to be in a disconnected state. Is there any way to have the sessions logoff on a set time limit? I am using RDS 2012 R2, and I know there are the settings on the application collections, but those settings are not available for desktop collections and the gpo settings listed under RDS session host don't seem to work for desktops either. Is there any way I can log these sessions off that is not a manual process?

Thanks,

Scott

Slow 10gb 2012 R2 Hyper-V Live Migration

$

Hello everyone!

I have an issue that I can't figure out and I'm hoping someone can get a new idea or set of eyes on this problem. I'm going to try and be as detailed as possible... but please ask any questions if I left anything out.

Basically I'm having an issue where i'm not getting the full 10gb transfers (or even close) when doing a Hyper-v move between hosts using 10gb nics. I get 2.5gbps if i'm lucky. These servers are not in production yet and are just being used to test a setup before being rolled out.

I have two similar but not identical Dell Poweredge R910 servers.

The two hosts have 2012 R2 Datacenter with only the Hyper-V Role installed. All updates, firmware and manufactures drivers applied, down to the bios, nics and raid cards as well.

I have installed one Intel X540-T1 10gbe card in each server in a x8 slot. I have these two cards connected via a straight  RJ45 Cat6 patch cable (no switch, no crossover). The cable is 3ft long. I have hyper-v setup to use this as a live migration network by adding the nics ip's in each host under live migrations.

Storage is local between each server a mix of 10K Raid10 and Enterprise class SSD disks. When doing disk to disk (same server) transfers of large file I see up to 900MBps on SSD's so i don't think the storage is a bottleneck.

When I do a live migration move between hosts I get between 2-2.5gbps transfer speeds using this link.

I ran iperf between the two servers and consistently get between 6-6.5gbps so I know these cards are at least working close to their rated speed. I would have thought these tests should be closer to 10gbps though.

Not sure how to troubleshoot this. I have changed the nic setting to enable/disable VMQ, I have enabled/disabled jumbo packets as well as a bunch of other nic settings in an attempt to narrow this down. Nothing really seems to speed this connection up. I have also disabled the c states and c1e in the bios and set everything to maximum performance with no change in speed.

I have tried 3 different patch cables including a non supported 5e patch cable (just to see if the speed degraded) and the speeds stayed the same.

Any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks!

failed to start worker process: server execution failed

I've been trying to get windows phone 8 emulator working with no luck. This lead me to find out that it's not emulator problem, but hyper-v itself. I installed new VM and when starting it, I'm getting the following error after it attempting to start for about 5 minutes:
"Name" failed to start worker process: Server execution failed (0x80080005)
I've checked cpuid for compatibility with virtualization (vmplayer works ok)

I don't see anything in windows event log, but Hper-V-Worker/Admin log has the following entry:
The Virtual Machine Worker Process has lost its connection to the root\virtualization WMI namespace: General access denied error (0x80070005). As a result, some WMI operations may not function correctly. To correct the problem, try restarting the Windows Management Instrumentation service.

and Hyper-V-VMMS has the same message as above about worker process not starting.

I've tried re-reinstalling hyper-V with no success.

Thanks for any help.

Taking Shadow Copies on the host leads to VM being saved

$

Hi All,

There are 6 VMs running on a Windows Server 2008 R2 Hyper-V host. All the VHDs of these VMs are in the E drive on the Hyper-V host server. I'm using the Windows Server Backup to back up the Bare metal recovery, System state, System Reseved, volume E on the host server. The VSS type is "VSS copy Backup". I find that 3 VMs are saved during taking Shadow Copies for E drive when the Windows Server Backup is running. There are no down time for another 3 VMs. How can I troubleshoot the 3 VMs which are saved during the VSS?

Thanks,

VM loses network connectivity when migrating between hosts (nodes in cluster)

$

Hi,

Sometimes when we migrate a VM from one node to another it will lose connectivity to the network, it can still ping other VMs on the virtual switch. As soon as I migrate the VM back then it will regain connectivity

Things I have tried to fix this:

  • Replace the Live Migration network switch: solved most of the issues but the disconnecting problem came back after a while
  • Disabled VMQ on all the Host adapters and NIC teams and on the virtual switches
  • Disabled LSO on all the Host adapters and NIC teams
  • Set the NIC teams to Passive
  • Assign static MAC addresses to the VMs

The only other things I can think of is destroying the teams and testing that, but that will defeat the purpose of having multiple NICs in a v-switch for failover.

Maybe look at the production LAN the v-switches and hosts connect to and see if there are ARP errors?

If anyone has ran into this issue and fixed it, please let me know, thanks.

orphaned VHDs

Folks,

Is there a quick way to see all unattached (orphaned) .vhd drives?

The reason I am asking is that we have a relatively large Hyper-V host that runs tons of VMs, the problem is that "there are too many cooks in the kitchen", namely a lot of people have access to the server.
They create and delete a lot of VMs. When they delete a VM from the console, as we all know, does not delete actual VHDs from the file system. Hence, the host is now running out of space.....

Again, we were wondering if there is a script/interface that can show which VHD is attached to which VM?

Thanks!

Dmitri.

VM exhibiting 100% disk busy time, large disk queue lengths

$

Hi everyone,

We have a .VHD workload residing on a logical 2 x 136Gb RAID1 mirror pair of disks.

The .VHD file is 130Gb (with 70Gb of free space)

The Virtual Machine is running Windows 2008 R2 SP1, 4 cores and 8Gb of RAM and is exhibiting 100% disk busy time and disk queue lengths of anywhere between 14 and 44

I'm assuming this is because there is virtually no disk space on the logical drive. Ops Mgr 2012 R2 reports high memory pages/sec

So we backed up the .VHD workload, broke the RAID1 Mirror and inserted 2 x 300Gb  as a RAID1 mirror and restore the .VHD / VM

The Logical disk has 50% free disk space, however the VM is still exhibiting 100% disk busy time and the above disk queue lengths.

It is running on a Windows Server 2008 R2 SP1 HP Proliant Server running the Hyper-V role under Server Core

Any ideas most appreciated.

Offline backups since upgrade to 2012 R2

$

Hi, here is a topo of what I use:

Windows 2012 R2

SCVMM 2012 R2

DPM 2012 R2

All VM are in a cluster

I have been having an issue since the upgrade of my Hyper-V host from 2008 R2 to 2012 R2. Since the upgrade of my hosts from 2008 R2 to 2012 R2, the VM in DPM are showing, but only in a offline mode. Before, they were showing online.

I have read that the VM would be taken offline when:

  1. The Backup (Volume Snapshot) Integration Service is disabled or not installed.
  2. A virtual machine has one or more dynamic disks.
  3. A virtual machine has one or more volumes that are based on non-NTFS file systems.
  4. In a cluster configuration, the virtual machine Cluster Resource Group is offline.
  5. A virtual machine is not in a running state.
  6. A Shadow Storage assignment of a volume inside the virtual machine is explicitly set to a different volume other than itself.

But all my VM were taken online before. And none of the configs changed.

Also, the VM I create in SCVMM 2012 R2 give me the option to take the backup online.

The difference I’ve noticed is that the “Bus Configuration” shows IDE devices attached and SCSI Adapter attached for the old ones (created with 2008 R2). And only SCSI Adapters for the new one (created with 2012 R2).

So, after this beautiful story, here are my 2 questions:

  1. Why are my backups are being taken offline and does this makes a difference in the data being taken?
  2. Is there a way to have them being taken online again?

Thank you,

Fix "Cant Start Error" in Hyper V when trying to start a VM

Hi all.

I'm currently running Windows Server 2008 R2 on VMWare Workstation.

So I am trying to set up Hyper V machines and trying to start them. When I click on start, the following error pops up:

How can I fix this to start the VM's??

Thanks

How can I Uninstall MS Hyper-V Server 2008 R2?

I have a Windows 7 installed on my machine. My younger brother installed MS Hyper-V Server 2008 R2. Now when I start the machine I see two options

MS Hyper-V Server 2008 R2

Widows 7

How can I get rid of this. I do see only the cmd prompt on selecting the MS Hyper-V Server 2008 R2.

Loss of network connectivity at random times to guests and now hosts Server 2012 R2 Hyper-v on Dell R620...Guests virtual disks reside on a NAS.

$

We have set up 2 Hyper-v environments (Server 2012 R2 fully updated) on Dell R620's. The guest machines are configured do that they reside on a NAS (also a Dell R620 with server 2012). We are having an issue on both the environments where the guests will lose network connectivity. The servers ran well for about 4 weeks and recently the guests started having issues and we have even had to reboot the host due to network connectivity problems.

We have 4 virtual switches set up. 1 connected to its own NIC. 1 for management and the 3 others for guests.

The 3 for guests are not configured to allow host OS sharing.

We do not have IP addresses on the NICS for the guests. Only on the management port. (all 1 GB NICS)

We have updated the firmware and drivers for the standard Broadcom Netxtreme cards.

We do not have Jumbo frames enabled because of some issues with switching compatability.

I've seen articles recommending to turn off TCP offloading and to disable virtual machine queues. Is this best practice?

Any thoughts of where I might look to help diagnose this issue?

Hyper-V - What is the correct VMQ Adapter Setting

$

Hello all, I'm setting up three Win2012R2 servers as a three node hyper-v cluster. I'm using converged networking and am using 4 nics; 2 nics will be for an infrastructure nic team that supports Management, Cluster, Live Migration, and the guest OSes. The other 2 nics will be used for a storage connection. After the 2 infrastructure nics are teamed, I want to set up the correct vmq settings on each of the two network adapters based on the processors that are in the server.   I have two 6-core processors in each server giving 24 logical processors. To prevent overlap in the processors that the vmq's will use, is this the best configuration?

set-netadaptervmq NIC1 -baseprocessornumber 2 -maxprocessors 6

set-netadaptervmq NIC2 - baseprocessornumber 14 -maxprocessors 6

Any feedback appreciated. Thanks.
