HP Storage Works Error

I have an HP storage works that is not working after a restart.

In the "Automated Storage Manager" (that seems to be more trouble then its worth), my User-Defined device which connects as a ISCSI is coming up with the following error: "Failed to find volume, ensure volume is mounted"

I can see the vhd file that this User-Defined setup is looking for, no clue. I have a server down right now as it can not access the virtual disk associated with this issue.

HELP PLEASE!!!!!!!

Hyper-V random memory consuption

Hi,

Recently I spotted a strange problem - my task manager displayed memory usage up to more than 90% with no particular reason, as all processes in total were consuming up to just 20-30% of RAM.

After some investigation I noticed that after starting/restarting a guest machine memory usage drops back to normal.

You can see that memory usage drops at the moment I started a VM that wasn't previously running. At some point memory consumption starts to increase and again drops when I perform some start/stop actions with any WM. I got 2 VMs, one is Windows XP Pro and another is Ubuntu Server 12.04, both set up for static 512MB of RAM.

The machine is Windows Server 2008 R2 Std

Did anyone experience something like that? I really don't know what is the reason of such strange behavior.

Cheerz.

HyperV replica Capacity Planner

Hi,

I'm trying to run the HyperV replica Capacity planner against the HyperV Cluster on the production environment. The cluster consists of 5 Windows 2012 Datacenter hyperV hosts. I downloaded the capacity planner from the following URL.

http://www.microsoft.com/en-au/download/details.aspx?id=39057

Execute it on the SCVMM server (SCVMM 2012 R2 on Windows 2012 R2). Took the default value for Duration for Metric (30 Minutes) and specified the HyperV replica Broker name for the Primary site details. Skipped the replica site details. However, it doesn't go beyond the following screen. Kept it running for 8 hours with n luck

Screenshot 1

If I click next i get the following screen,

How can I troubleshoot this issue?

internet access from host to virtual domain VM(s) on hyper-V

in my Hyper-V lab
1.created Internal Virual Switch (switch_1)
2.installed 4 Win 2012 eval servers (DC, Node1,Node2,Node3,Node4)
3.created domain AG, joined all servers to domain, DC machine is domain contoler

In network connection on Host  I can see following items
 WI-FI Ralink (bridged)
 switch_1
 Bridged connection

using properties of switch_1 I set it to "add to bride", but I can't access internet from my VM stations

When I remove  bridge from WI-FI Ralink ,I am loosing internet connection on my host, when I reboot host internet connections to Host comes back.

I guess I missing some steps...

What is correct ways to set up internet connection from my host to my VM stations ?
I am at the point where I want to drop all VM ,uninstall Hyper-V from Host and reinstall it ,but not sure if it help
Or might be I can
1.remove all virual switches
2.delete everything from "Control Panel\Network and Internet\Network Connections" except WI-FI
3.Remove bridge from WI-FI Ralink (affaid I will loose internet conenction to host)
4.recreate  Virtual switch again and bridge it to WI-FI

Hyper-V VM Crash w/ Kernel Event ID 41

I have a host machine running Server 2008 R2 and two Hyper-V VM's (Server 2008 R2) on dedicated drives. Each drive is a 10k SAS drive. The only thing on those drives is the VM information and the VHD (fixed size). The VM's crash regularly with a anywhere from 8 hours to 6-7 days with a Kernel Event ID 41 and NO codes or BugCheck information (similar to Scenario 3 listed here in KB 202850.

Both of the VM's use the stock drivers that were installed with the OS. The host uses only drivers that were installed with the OS or WHQL drivers provided via Windows Update.

One VM simply runs (it has nothing installed, it is essentially empty), the other hosts an IIS 7.5 webserver.

The host is a relatively new Dell R620.

The host stays perfectly stable, running 24/7. The only time it ever restarts is for regular planned maintenance. The event logs on the host have no entries that would suggest any problems with the VM's.

All hardware on the host has been run through diagnoostic checks, and everything is working properly.

What are some things I should be looking at to diagnose this problem? It's driving me crazy trying to track down a phantom "off switch" that keeps getting mashed.

Why are my guest VMs running in slow motion ?

Hi everyone !

Here is my setup:

2 servers (Hyper-v / Xeon E5620 / 16Go each) running in cluster. Connected to a QNAP TS-859U+ NAS thru a ProCurve 6108 with 2x1GB trunked ports.

There are 11 guest VMs all running at very poor speed. For instance it takes up to 1 hour to complete less than 10 Windows Server updates.

When I'm checking the switch or the NAS status, it appears that bandwidth usage is extremely low: I've got 1-4% usage top on both ports of the switch. And no more than 4-5Mo/s of read / write operations on the QNAP ressources monitor.

I really don't understand what's going wrong with this quite simple setup so I hope you guys can help me out !

Thanks everyone and sorry for that bad english you have to read...

Hello Hyper-V guys!

I want do deploy a simple Application Server (2 CPUs), where there are some tasks who need to be seperated from OS to OS (So not running on one Host).

I know with a Windows 2012 R2 Windows Server i can set up two Hyper-V VMs.

But i have also a Application that runs on Windows XP (and can't be upgraded) and a Solution in Linux.

If i want to Set up 4 VMs = 2x Windows 2012 R2, 1 XP and 1 Linux on Hyper-V how much Windows-Server 2012 R2 Licenses do i need?

Thank you very much for your help.

Offline backups since upgrade to 2012 R2

$

Hi, here is a topo of what I use:

Windows 2012 R2

SCVMM 2012 R2

DPM 2012 R2

All VM are in a cluster

I have been having an issue since the upgrade of my Hyper-V host from 2008 R2 to 2012 R2. Since the upgrade of my hosts from 2008 R2 to 2012 R2, the VM in DPM are showing, but only in a offline mode. Before, they were showing online.

I have read that the VM would be taken offline when:

  1. The Backup (Volume Snapshot) Integration Service is disabled or not installed.
  2. A virtual machine has one or more dynamic disks.
  3. A virtual machine has one or more volumes that are based on non-NTFS file systems.
  4. In a cluster configuration, the virtual machine Cluster Resource Group is offline.
  5. A virtual machine is not in a running state.
  6. A Shadow Storage assignment of a volume inside the virtual machine is explicitly set to a different volume other than itself.

But all my VM were taken online before. And none of the configs changed.

Also, the VM I create in SCVMM 2012 R2 give me the option to take the backup online.

The difference I’ve noticed is that the “Bus Configuration” shows IDE devices attached and SCSI Adapter attached for the old ones (created with 2008 R2). And only SCSI Adapters for the new one (created with 2012 R2).

So, after this beautiful story, here are my 2 questions:

  1. Why are my backups are being taken offline and does this makes a difference in the data being taken?
  2. Is there a way to have them being taken online again?

Thank you,

Hi!

We need to upgrade our win 2008 R2 hyper-v servers to win 2012 data center. What is the recommended way to do that. Can we just run win 2012 setup or better to transfer VMs to another server, format the server and install win 2012?

Thanks.

When we do a failover to a Replica, what happened to the connected clients? Assuming that the Replica is located in a remote DR site with a different IP configuration.

Hi,

I need some guidance here, please.

I have some questions about replication:

  • When we do a failover to a Replica, what happened to the connected clients? Assuming that the Replica is located in a remote DR site with a different IP configuration.
  • Is possible to automate the failover process? Just like happens in a cluster.
  • What changes do I need to do in order to guarantee that my clients reach my replica? For example, I need to do a failover to my Exchange Server Replica and I need to minimize the downtime. The same applies for a DC or a SharePoint Server

  Thanks in advanced.

Host server live migration causing Guest Cluster node goes down

Hi

I have two node Hyper host cluster , Im using converged network for Host management,Live migartion and cluster network. And Separate NICs for ISCSI multi-pathing. When I live migrate the Guest node from one host to another , within guest cluster the node is going down.  I have increased clusterthroshold and clusterdelay values.  Guest nodes are connecting to ISCSI network directly from ISCSI initiator on Server 2012.

The converged networks for management ,cluster and live migration networks are built on top of a NIC Team with switch Independent mode and load balancing as Hyper V port.

I have VMQ enabled on Converged fabric  and jumbo frames enabled on ISCSI.

Can Anyone guess why would live migration cause failure on the guest node.

thanks

Physical processor to Logical Processor ratio

$

Hi Experts !

I came across this old blog post on Physical processor to Logical processor calculation.

http://blogs.msdn.com/b/virtual_pc_guy/archive/2010/08/13/using-powershell-to-find-the-virtual-processor-to-logical-processor-ratio-of-hyper-v.aspx

The straight formula I see here is

Write-Host (@(Get-WmiObject -Namespace "root\virtualization\v2" -Class MSVM_Processor).count / (@(Get-WmiObject -Class Win32_Processor) | measure -Property NumberOfLogicalProcessors -Sum).Sum) "Virtual Processor (s) per logical processor" -ForegroundColor yellow

As per this formula, My Hp Blade server BL460c with 2 X Intel(R) Xeon(R) CPU E5-2670 0 @ 2.60GHz, 2600 Mhz, 8 Core(s), 16 Logical Processor(s) can have 2.125 Virtual Processor (s) per logical processor

I have 32 Logical Processors and can have have 68 Virtual Processors in this case.

Is this assumption correct?

Is this formula applicable for even an AMD processor?

Cheers.

Can't perform online backup since Hyper-V Upgrade to 2012 R2

$

Hey there,

we've been using the DPM 2012 R2 with our three Hyper-V 2012 servers since last November. A few days ago we upgraded all Hyper-V Hosts to 2012 R2 using a clean installation. We put all VMs in Saved State, reinstalled Windows and imported them.
To perform online backups we upgraded Integration Services to 6.3.9600.16384 on each VM and added a SCSI-Controller.

In DPM, we removed all protection members from the protection groups and added them again, after everything was updated.

Out of our about 60 VMs who are backed up online, there are a few that I can only backup offline for various reasons, but with one VM I can't figure out why.

The VM is our Lync 2010 edge server, Windows Server 2008 R2, Integration Services up-to-date, SCSI-Controller installed, current Windows Updates installed, no dynamic disks.

I added the VM to backup to look for errors and on the Hyper-V host I got 18 events saying "The Data Exchange integration service is either not enabled, not running or not initialized".
I verified, the Integration Services are up-to-date, the "Backup (volume checkpoint)" checkbox in VM settings is ticked and the Data Exchange service inside the VM is running. There are also no errors in the guest's event log.

Any ideas?

Running domain controller as VMs on a hyper-v 2012 cluster

Hi gurus

I have a question. I want to run two VMs on a Hyper-v cluster. I want to make these VMs as domain controller and leverage the cluster. Can I do this? I have not been able find any information on this. The hyper-v is running on windows 2012, but it can be upgraded to R2 if there are any benefits associated with this.

Any help will be appreciated.

Best Method for Backups - Is this overkill?

$

ok, here is what I am doing for backups now, please tell me what changes you would make:

Weekends I am manually doing exports of every server

Nightly I am backing up the file content of each server

Snapshots are taken prior to Windows Updates or Major Server Changes

While I am only doing three methods, the exports take forever and are being done on my time, not paid time.

What is the best, most successful methods of backup for Hyper-V? Is there software out there recommended?

VM won't start, unable to mount VHD file

$

Hello,

Last night I powered off my Windows 8.1 Pro machine running Hyper-V and one of the virtual machines may have gotten forced down hard.  This morning when I tried to start it I am getting:

BOOTMGR is missing
Press Ctrl+Alt+Del to restart

My first suspicion was that the .VHD was corrupted and needed repairing.  In the VMware world I would mount the disk to another VM and use various tools on it (chkdsk, etc) I believe Windows actually makes this a little easier by allowing mounding of a .VHD within disk manger.  I mount the disk and see the following image:

Although the size is correct the disk comes up as RAW (Which seems odd to this hyper-V newbie).  I am unable to explore the contents of the drive, I get the error "F:\ is not accessible.  The file or directory is corrupted and unreadable."

I have a crazy suspicion that the drive is still locked by Hyper-V as if it is still running.  Naturally I have confirmed the virtual machine appears offline.  Is it possible that some kind of lock was not fully released when the machine was powered off?  Any other troubleshooting tips I could try?

General Access Denied Error - Hyper-V

$

Hi

We have a Hyper-V 2012 3 node cluster, the VMs are stored on a Server 2012 based 2 node Scale Out File Server.

We created this setup from new in October 2013 and it has generally worked OK since but we do get the occasional "General Access Denied Error (0x80070005)" when we try to live migrate a virtual machine.  The instructions in the below TechNet article do not work for us - the result indicates success but when we try the Live Migration again we get the same error message.

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2249906/en-gb

I have in the past resolved this by removing the virtual machine from Failover Cluster Manager, migrating it via Hyper-V Manager, logging on to the destination Hyper-V host and re-importing it to Failover Cluster Manager from there.

However last night I was doing some system maintenance and went to drain a host via Failover Cluster Manager.  The host had around 20 VMs on it and only two VMs successfully migrated - the other VMs did not migrate and now I cannot move them from that host for love nor money!

The Event Log for FCM indicates they have the "General Access Denied" error.

I have tried the following:

  • Use instructions in above mentioned TechNet article (shows success, but same error happens when I try to Live Migrate)
  • Tried the method I have mentioned above (removing from FCM etc.).  Get the Access Denied message
  • Checking the folder permissions on the "Virtual Machines" folder where XMLs are stored.  Permissions appear OK for all Hyper-V hosts (also checked the VMs VHD permissions)
  • Trying the Live Migration directly on Hyper-V host rather than via a Constrained Delegation scenario
  • Checking Constrained Delegation in AD (seems fine as per when I set it up in October)
  • Checking permissions on the Scale Out File Server

With regards to the Scale Out File Server I have noticed in the past some odd permissions things going on.  I have seen the permissions for the Hyper-V hosts going from (for example) "Full Access" on "This Folder, Subfolders & Files" to random things like " Read/Modify" on "This Folder Only".  Manually changing the permissions back to Full Control resolves the issue, but does not stop it recurring again.

So I'm a bit confused really!  It looks like a mixed basket of permissions issues going on!  Some of our most critical machines are on that host at the moment and they cannot be moved.  Any suggestions appreciated.

Many thanks

EventId: 7043 - The Hyper-V Virtual Machine Management service did not shut down properly after receiving a preshutdown control.

Noticed that our hyper-V host logs the below event log error every time it is rebooted.  Any ideas why this service did not shut down properly?

EventId: 7043, System, Service Control Manager - The Hyper-V Virtual Machine Management service did not shut down properly after receiving a preshutdown control.

The hosted virtual server does pause/restart and shutdown/startup correctly from hyper-v manager manually.

Anyone else seeing this error message?
