Server 2012 R2 essentials backup on Server 2012 R2 essentials host (parent)

All,

I'm planning to replace a legacy server with Server 2012 R2 essentials. I'm wondering if I would go for Hyper-V.

Reason for Hyper-v would be for easy recovery. I'm familiar with VMware & Veeam but I wonder if Microsoft Hyper-V has build-in snapshot backup capabilities. If so, it would save me the cost of Veeam Essentials...

As I'm not familiar with Microsoft Hyper-V, could you briefly explain what the best approach is for backups? I find the licensing model of Microsoft interesting, saves the VMware license if you take a server... As such, a move to Microsoft could be an option for other VM's I'm running!

So bottom line, is Microsoft Hyper-v capable of taking snapshot backups of guest machines to disk (NAS) or USB? I would expect this backup to run from the parent, not from the guest.

Thanks

Hyper-V Windows 2012 r2 Poor network performance

Hi,

Since that I installed Windows 2012 R2 and Hyper-v, I notice that is very slow performing copy operations from the VMs to the physical machine (appears to be lock to 10MB). Firs I though that this issue was only between the VMs and the parent OS, now I realized that when copying between this Hyper-v physical host and another physical host in the same subnet I also get only 10MB of speed.

How do I unlock this 10MB limit??

The switch and all NICs are GIGABIT capable and before using Windows 2012 r2, using the same hardware boxes I was doing 400MB of transfers between physical hosts and VMs??!!

Thank you.

Hyper-V Windows r2 Enabling Replication failed

Hi

I have to physical boxes in workgroup mode. I configured the certs (rootCa and machine with -eku 1.3.6.1.5.5.7.3.1,1.3.6.1.5.5.7.3.2). Then I copy the rootCa from each physical box to each other.

I open the 80/443 - Hyper-V Replica HTTP Listener and Hyper-V Replica HTTPs Listener firewall rules.

Then enable replication in each Hyper-v settings - selected HTTPS, the certicficate to be used and allow replication from any authenticated server.

When I try to eneable replication on a given VM, at the end of the wizard, when I click finish I get:

Hyper-v failed to enable replication.

Hyper-v failed to enable replication for virtual machine "vmname"; The connection with the server was terminated abnormally (0X00002EFE). () Virtual machine ID XXXXXXXX-XXXX-XXXX-XXXX-XXXXXXXXXXXX)

Hyper-V failed to establish a connection with the replica server 'serverName' on port '443'. Error: The connection with the server was terminated abnormally (0X00002EFE)

Any thoughs how to solve this?

Than you.

Xendesktop 7.1 - Connecting to Provisioning Services - Please wait

Hi,

We have a problem with Hyper-V 2012R2 and Citrix Xendesktop 7.1:

When PXE booting our VM's we get a delay from 1 minute before the connection to the PVS server will be made and the vDisk will be found. It shows:Connecting to Provisioning services. Please wait....
When we take a 2012 server instead of 2012R2, everything works fine and fast...

What's changed within 2012R2 what could cause this problem?

Somebody?

Kind Regards,

Kris

server 2012 r2 live migration fails with hardware error

$

  • Hello all, we just upgraded one of our hyper v hosts from server 2012 to server 2012 r2; previously we had live replication setup between it and another box on the network which was also running server 2012. After installing server 2012 r2 when a live migration is attempted we get the message:

"The virtual machine cannot be moved to the destination computer. The hardware on the destination computer is not compatible with the hardware requirements of this virtual machine. Virtual machine migration failed at migration source."

The servers in question are both dell, currently we have a poweredge r910 running server 2012 and a poweredge r900 running server 2012 r2. The section under processor for "migrate to a physical computer using a different processor" is already checked and this same vm was successfully being live replicated before the upgrade to server 2012 r2. What would have changed around hardware requirements?

We are migrating from server 2012 on the poweredge r910 to server 2012 r2 on the poweredge r900. Also When I say this was an upgrade, we did a full re install and wiped out the installation of server 2012 and installed server 2012 r2, this was not an upgrade installation.

Cannot Configure Hyper-V Virtual Switch - VM has no internet access...

HI:

As stated in the title, I cannot configure my VM (OS Windows 7 Pro...) to access the internet...

When I attempt to configure a Virtual Switch with all defaults, I get this error: 0x800705B4.

I found an article online that advised to create the Switch internally without choosing the 'Connect to external network' option, then manually bridging the connections... which also didn't work...

Now I've got 'Hyper-V Virtual Ethernet Adapters' Stuck in my Device Mgr, and my VM still won't connect to the internet.

Help?

Server02 - Windows 2008 R2, 2 x Quad Core Processors, 144GB RAM HP ProLiant

SAN01 - 8TB HP StorageWorks

SAN02 - 8TB HP StorageWorks

I have Server01 & SAN01 connected via ISCSI and 10 Virtual Machines running via Hyper-V

I have Server02 & SAN02 connected via ISCSI and 8 Virtual Machines running via Hyper-V

If I do any type of exports or disc expansions related to a Hyper-V machine the system in question becomes so slow that it almost comes to a stand still.

What could be causing the issue ?

Trouble Exporting and Importing a Hyper V VM

I have two laptops each running Windows 8.1

I want to transfer a VM running Server 2012 R2 from one to the other.

Within Hyper-V Manager I shutdown the VM and export it.

Copy the files to the new laptop

Within Hyper-V manager I choose to Import

I can fire up the VM and log in with the Administrator username and password, but there are no installed apps available - eg Visual Studio. Also if I search for Control Panel it doesnt find that either.

Am I missing anything in my process?

An additional piece of information is I dont have network access either from the new VM. I created a new virtual network switch in the Virtual Switch Manager.

failed to start worker process: server execution failed

I've been trying to get windows phone 8 emulator working with no luck. This lead me to find out that it's not emulator problem, but hyper-v itself. I installed new VM and when starting it, I'm getting the following error after it attempting to start for about 5 minutes:
"Name" failed to start worker process: Server execution failed (0x80080005)
I've checked cpuid for compatibility with virtualization (vmplayer works ok)

I don't see anything in windows event log, but Hper-V-Worker/Admin log has the following entry:
The Virtual Machine Worker Process has lost its connection to the root\virtualization WMI namespace: General access denied error (0x80070005). As a result, some WMI operations may not function correctly. To correct the problem, try restarting the Windows Management Instrumentation service.

and Hyper-V-VMMS has the same message as above about worker process not starting.

I've tried re-reinstalling hyper-V with no success.

Thanks for any help.

Moving Local Disk Drive from Host to VM/ Possible?

$

Hi haven't seen similar questions about this.

New to Hyper V!

Is it possible to Unmount one of the local drives (I have four) host is WS2012 and mount on my VM carrying across the content?

I have it shared through internal switch which is accessible through a share but this is not working for streaming content purposes through the subsonic app.

I need to move the local drive over to reflect in my VM.

Thanks

Stephen

Can't import a VM

$

Hello!

There's a test PC (Server 2012R2)  with two network cards (Nic1=Realtek, Nic2 = Dlink). Some days ago I created a VM on this PC and created a couple of checkpoints for the VM. Today I formatted the PC's disk C, tried importing this VM and failed:

If i choose the Realtek virtual adapter from the list the error persists:

So I don't understand

1) Why Hyper-V "can't find" the switch that's available for selection

2) Is a vm (or a snapshot of the vm) bound to a specific virtual adapter and can't be used with any other one? (If so I would be suprised...I re-attached replica VMs to other virtual switches many times without any problems...

Thank you in advance,

Michael

Export / Import virtual Machine without deleting the source VM

Hello

I have a little question, in Hyper V Manager i'd like to export my virtual Machine called Test from host01 to another local storage, say Q:.

My goal is to import this VM WITHOUT deleting the VM Test on host01 because i want to be sure that this export works 100%.
Is this possible anyway? What changes do i have to make? Are there other possibilities to check if the export is working? Because starting the VM from Q: is not recommended is it?

Thanks a lot

Make a VM Highly Available without a "copy" operation (2008R2 to 2012R2) ?

$

Hi all,

We are trying to migrate from a Windows 2008R2 Hyper-V environment to a Windows 2012 R2 Hyper-V Cluster.

The problem is that we would like to make these VM's highly available but the only way that I've found is to migrate the VM and select "Make this highly available.....".

It works fine from a technical point of view but no matter what, it includes a copy operation.

Which is not that great from a time perspective and it will temporarily mean that we need twice the amount of space.

I don't understand why this should be necessary since we can put the VM's on the CSV's from the start.

Even if it's in a down state it's still a copy, not a move.

I may have missed something but haven't found any procedure while searching the net that provides a different solution.

Would be great if there is another option.

Running virtual machine with disk placed on a network drive

I'm facing a problem while starting a virtual machine which has a disk placed on a NAS.

First, I thought that it is completly impossible, because I couldn't find the drive p:\ (I mapped the network path to p:\) while setting the disk path. But when I tried to give the network path \\192.168.1.101\public\VirtM\VirtHD - it was ok.

Now, starting the virtual machine lasts for about 1-2 minutes and finally ends with an error: "The application encountered an error while attempting to change the state of 'VirtXP_dev'."

Some details presented on the error screen:
"Failed to Power on with Error 'The process cannot access the file because another process has locked a portion of the file.' (0x80070021)"

During the time machine is starting I've noticed that I cannot access the \\192.168.1.101\ at all, like it wouldn't exist.

Is it possible, that Hyper-V mounts somewhere intenally this net path and the same way blocks this path for itself? Any idea what's going on?

My Hyper-V runs on W2012 Datacenter server. The virtual machine WindowsXP runs without problems from the local drive. Even after removing the mapping (drive letter p:\ no more available) the situation is the same.

Many thanks for any clues.

Convert a dynamic vhd to fixed vhd using Convert-VHD cmdlet

Hi folks,

I have dynamically expanding vhd. Now I want to convert it to fixed size vhd.

I used the  Convert-VHD  cmdlet, which works fine.

But if I give the source and want to overwrite my dynamic vhd to the fixed vhd,  it is throwing error, such the file exists.

Convert-VHD –Path "\path\to\vhd\mydata.vhd" –DestinationPath "\path\to\vhd\mydata.vhd" -VHDType Fixed -DeleteSource

Is there any other option (like -Force) available for this ?

Note: Without using a temp file and renaming, I hope we have a better solution

Thanks,

Saleem

Hyper-V Server disable complex passwords

Does anyone know how to disable password complexity on Hyper-V Server (and I suppose on Server Core too)? Normally I'd do it from the Local  Security Policy MMC plugin but I can't use this on Hyper-V Server and I can't see a way to use it remotely from another 2k8 machine.

I've Googled for ways to do this from the command line but with no success.

Unable to change hyper V server 2012 keyboard layout.

Hi,

I have installed Hyper V server 2012. The problem is the following, i have a french keyboard and  after installing Hyper V server, i am unable to change the keyboard layout of Hyper V server to french.

I have tried to changed the registry keys:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Keyboard Layout\Preload     1    to  0000040c (french keyboard layout) but there is no effect after reboot.

Interestingly enough, i have the right keyboard layout during installation after selecting "french" during installation under "keyboard or input method".

But then after installation it does not work anymore. Hyper V "forgets" this choice. Is it a bug?

Notice, i am not looking to change anything but the input keyboard layout to be able to type commands from the Hyper V local terminal.

Thank you.
