Hyper-V 2012 - IBM DS3524 SAN via SAS

$

Hi all,

I'm looking for a bit of guidance on the DS3524 (with SAS connections) and Hyper-V 2012 with regards to MPIO. I have come from a VMware background and have only worked on iSCSI SANs so this is all new to me.

Firstly the setup...

1 x DS3524 with Dual Controllers using SAS Connections (Hardware ID: 1764 FasTt Firmware: 07.86.32.00)
2 x IBM 3650 M4 with 2 x IBM 6GB SAS HBAs in each
DS Storage Manager Version 10.86.0G05.0035
Windows 2012 Datacenter with Hyper-V 2012

What I am having difficulty finding is a definitive guide on how to configure the DS3524 in Windows 2012 (Hyper-V) with SAS connections. I have configured the Array in the DS Storage Manager, created some LUNs, created the Hosts using the Host Port Identifiers on the SAS cards, and mapped the LUNs pretty much as I would have done as if I was setting it up for iSCSI. I have set the Host Operating System to Windows Clustered.

From Windows, I can see the storage in Storage Pools, it shows as Primordial and then I can see the disks I have created when I select it and I can create a virtual disk on it etc. This is now where I am getting a little confused! As there are two SAS connections from each host, I would have thought I would need to setup MPIO as you would with an iSCSI connection. I have installed the DS Storage Manager host software on each host which installs MPIO and I can see the SAN listed in the Device Hardware ID, however when I select the Discover Multi-Paths tab, all the options are greyed out. I can see the 'Add support for SAS devices' checkbox, but cannot select it.

My specific questions are...

1) Do I need to use MPIO for my setup?
2) If not, how is failover handled?
3) Have I selected the correct Host Operating System for the Hosts in DS SM?
4) Is there a guide which explains all this?

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks,

Mark

Hyper -V Win 8 Pro, media option -add disk is not available on some created VM

Hi,

installed Hyper-V on Windows Pro

1.I created VM generation 2 with win2012 server eval.

2.using sysprep to create clone

3. created 3 copy of the file

4.installed 3 machine from file (DC,node1,node2)

4.on DC created domain

5.joined node1 and node2 to domain

6.created cluster

When I was going to install SQL server from ISO to node1 and node2 I noticed that in media action option to attach disk is not available (it show no disk to display) on node1 and node2

However on DC machine  I can attach ISO disk!

Why option to attach disk is not available on other machine and how make it available?

Currently I access disk from node1 and2  from domain using \\DC\D\setup.exe

P.S

few days ago I created 3 VM with Win2008R2 server (join then on domain and created cluster),add disk optiion availbale on all win2008R2 machines

Thank you

Alex

Windows 2012 Time Sync

Hi,

I have 1 Windows 2012 DC as the PDCE role.  This is currently a Hyper V virtual guest.

I have configured this server to get its time from an external time source following these instructions

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/816042

I  have also still have Hyper V Time Sync services enabled but have partially disabled it as per recommend (if that is still the case, it seems mixed), using this instructions

http://blogs.msdn.com/b/virtual_pc_guy/archive/2010/11/19/time-synchronization-in-hyper-v.aspx

All seems good when I run w32tm /query /source it shows my external manual peer list.

when I run w32tm /resync /force the time changes to the external time, but within seconds the time switches back to the virtual host time.  I've checked and the required registry key is there to disable, i've rebooted and restarted time service but still happens.  All I see in the event viewer is my time change request followed initially by another just saying "application or system component changed time".

Any ideas?

Thanks in advance

P2V

Dear all,

I have completed a P2V using Disk2VHD of a W3K SP2 server. The server had 4 disks the first being the C: with the OS, when I performed the P2V I did this for all of them individually so that I would end up with 4 VHD files.

However now when I boot the VM the OS is fine but in My Computer I can see the other disks and when I click on them I get the following error: " D:\is not accessible. The parameter is incorrect" When I check in disk management I see the disks but they show as Foreign and when I try to import one nothing happens. Also in disk management under first disk I can see 5 partitions which were not on the physical server also they are not accessible accept the C: disk partition.

Further more I have used the Edit disk feature in hyper-v to rebuild a new VHD file. Any advise.

Also should I have performed the P2V on all disk ib Disk2VHD?

Hi,

I have a 40GB nic in HOST. I have created a virtual switch and assigned to the VM.

In host I see 40GB Link speed but in VM i see 10 Gbps only.  Virtual switch does not support 40Gbps or any configuration issue?

Thanks in advance.

Thanks, Krishna

Hyper-V 2012 seem to use too much memory

I use Hyper-V Core 2012 (not R2) on a Dell Precision T7600 (a workstation). The machine has (3 x 16 GB) + (4 x 2 GB) = 56 Gb of RAM. This server hosts three VMs and each of them uses 16 GB (static memory allocation). This means there is 8 GB of RAM available.
I want to setup a fourth VM but strangely I can't allocate more the 2GB of RAM to this VM. With such configuration, Hyper-V Core is supposed to consume 2 GB, possibly 4 but certainly not 6!

I tried various things:
-Check the available memory on the host when the three VMs are running: it show 5.7 GB available.
-Check hard disk space for .bin file created for each VM: everything fine (plenty of space available).
-No RDP is still connected.
-Rebooted the server.

Any idea why this workstation seem to lose 2~3GB?

PS: I know about Dynamic memory allocation but I don't want to use it and that not the point of this question.

Hyper-v Server Free edition licening problems

I have been using free 2012-hyperv server for 2 months now.  Recently I have received a message "Windows cannot find 'c:\windows\system32\licensingui.exe. Make sure you typed the name correctly, and then try again."  Server has now also started to reboot every two hours similar to other Microsoft products when they become unlicensed and go into self destruct mode.

My question is simple. If this product is free why is it asking for licensing?  Why can I activate it, says product key has been disabled even though I never put a product key in.  Is this a demo version of core and not the real free hyper-v server?

Other posts mention this problem, but do not list a solution.

VSS Error in writer Hyper-V

I have a cluster with CSV 5 and DPM can't perform backup on only a few machines in the cluster, it apesenta VSS the following error:

Well, how did not get any results in searches, then checked the versions of the IC on client machines as clusters migrated from 2008 to 2012 some were outdated, updated them, even just to leave everything compliance.

So I decided to clear the "Backup (volume snapshot)" and now he backs up but does the same linux machines, saving the machine and causing downtime of it, and even if you are a linux machine with this option it can not perform the backup this because it tries utilizr VSS method (I think).

Please, anyone help-me?

thanks!

VMQ Enabled But Not Working

I'm totally lost on this one...

We have 4 Hyper-V Host servers; DL560 Gen8s. All of them are identical except two have 2 x 1GB 4 Port 366FLR cards, and the other two have 1 x 1GB 4 Port 366FLR card + 1 x 10GB 2 port 530T card. All the Nics fully support VMQs and are enabled y default. All the servers are running Server 2012, fully patched, and the firmware and Nic drivers are the latest.

The servers with just the 366FLR cards use VMQs perfectly, without any issue. The other two show all the right settings, but the VMQs are not used.

I've tried taking the 10GB cards out of the equation and just run on the 366FLRs, but still the VMs do not use VMQs. I've even upgraded one of them to server 2012 R2, and still no luck.

Here the outputs from powershell...

I've checked the registry and RssorVMQPreference key are all set to 1. Also the VMs have use VMQs ticked for the virtual adapter.

So my question is: If the hardware supports VMQs, the NICs and vNICs have VMQ enabled, the base processors and max processors are set, what else can I check to see why they are not being used???

Cheers,

Andrew

RemoteFX and windows 8.1

$

Hello,

I am currently running a VDI environment with server 2012 servers including a RDCB, RDVH, RDSH, RDWA and windows 8 clients. I am using remoteFX on the windows 8 clients with the help of 3 nvidia Quadro 6000 cards. RemoteFX works perfectly in windows 8; however, I built a windows 8.1 VM and remote FX will not work in this VM. When I log on to the vm and look under device manager the remoteFX device is listed but it gives an error of 43. All of the vm's have one monitor set in the remoteFX settings. In the event viewer of the windows 8.1 VM I am getting an error under RemoteDesktop Services vGPU-kModeDriver "The virtual GPU synthetic devie failed" and the other accompanying error is "The RDVGM kernal mode driver failed to start" I have removed all of the windows 8 VM's to confirm that all of the available memory of the GPU was not used and this didn't get any different results. The only difference I see is that one guest os is windows 8 and the other is 8.1. Does remoteFX not work in windows 8.1 by chance? Both OS's are Enterprise as well.

Thanks for any help,

Scott

Virtual Domain Controller - Sizing and Partitioning

$

I am planning on deploying several virtual domain controllers (250 users).

The DCs will be Server 2012 VMs (2GB RAM) running on Hyper-V.

I was simply going to install the operating system and AD on a single virtual hard disk, single volume - C:\

Now I am not so sure and would like some guidance.

  1. 1. Should I split System Page, NTDS, SYSVOL etc.?
  2. 2. If I do split them should I split them onto separate virtual hard disks, or simply separate volumes (on a single virtual hard disk)
  3. 3. How should I size it?

I was thinking :-

C:\ System and Page (40GB - Page file will be set to 3GB i.e. 1.5 x RAM)

E:\ NTDS, SYSVOL,  Logs (40GB total)

DHCP and DNS will also be installed on these DCs.

Redirecting com port to named pipes on Server 2008

Just finished a NEW build of (1) SBS2003R2, (2) Webserver & (3)PABX
Server... on Server2008 WVS
Box HPDL 380 G5 6GB ram, raid1 37GB, raid 5 350GB
Server 2008 WVS Enterprise

SBS2003R2 x86
Server2008Web x64 (WEB)
Server2008Web x64 (PABX)

This has been up for 8 days, I am testing continuosly, NO hickups,
install of SBS very fast, and after installing VM tools, extremly fast
and responsive. BUT

I need one Com port for my fax modem on the SBS server.

So I set the com port on the VM to \\.\pipe\com1

Now I have to do the corresponding on the Host server.

I tried to use WINdbg with the code of windbg -b -k comStick out tongueipe,port=\\.\pipe\com_1,resets=0 ,

I did not work, which I expected, the problems is I can't find any relevant documentation on how to do this.

It would be extremly helpful if we would have a driver from MS for this, or is there one?

Many thanks

Hyper V Cluster, Storage Spaces, CSV, SoFS - Does it really work together?

$

Having a heck of a time trying to find the best solution so while I wait for Microsoft to get back to me, figured I would ask.

Built a 3 node cluster, all running 2012R2.  Each node has an LSI HBA connected with 6Gb/s SAS cables to a DataOn DNS 1640D Jbod.  The Jbod is loaded with a combanation of WD 6Gb/s SAS and Hitachi SSD drives.  Everything is on the Windows HCL for storage spaces.

In storage spaces, I have one storage pool with a couple of tiered virtual disks.  The disks have volumes that were added as CSV for the Hyper V cluster storage.  In addition to the Hyper V guests running on the cluster, there is also a SoFS role running, configured as a generic file share.

What I can't figure out is why my read and writes speeds are so bad from the guest vm's.  When I test speeds from any of the 3 host nodes to the shared storage, I get great numbers.  Almost 900Mb/s at times, especially when testing against a 6 column 2 way mirror virtual disk.  But when I try to go into the guest VM and try and do a file copy, the speed drops to 20-30Mb/s.  The vhdx is stored on the same virtual disk.  No matter what I try, I can't get near the speed that the host can achieve.  The biggest problem I run into is running a VM with Sql on it.  Again, the VM is just a 2012R2 box with Sql2012 loaded.  It's a small, 3gb database.  The database is on a small vhdx stored on a CSV along with the other Guest image VHDX files.  I have tried to pin the sql vhdx to the  SSD tier and I still can't break 50Mb/s read or writes to that volume.

I have read a lot about how CSV is to blame but i'm not sure why.  Why can the host read and write to the cluster storage with huge numbers but the guest vm's on that same host get only 5% of the speed the host gets?  Where to go next?

Windows guest network performance

Hello,

We have noticed last week that several backups tasks where taking twice the time they used to take, so we checked disk and network performance and determined that network performance dropped to 200Mbps on Windows VM guests on our three node 2012 hyper-v cluster, while it used to be around 900Mbps when testing with iperf to an external linux phisical host with 1Gbps NIC, and linux VM guests (CentOS) on the same cluster are performing as usual at 900Mbps to an external physical Host.

Running iperf test between two Windows VM Guests running on the same Hyper-v Node results on 550Mpbs, the same test between two a Linux and a Windows VM's on the same hyper-v hosts shows the same bandwidth, and same test between two linux VM's performs at 1,7Gpbs average.

Integration services version on Windows guests is 6.2.9200.16384 for Win 2k3 and 6.2.9.16433 for Win 2008

We have updated Intel NIC driver on all three hyperv hosts and performance still is poor. It seems to be related to vSwitch configuration, but as I'm talking about a production environment I would like to know your opinion about this and if it could be related to a Windows update or a Integration services version problem.

Virtual machine "crashing DNS Pool"

My home network crashes every time I try to start up a virtual machine in Hyper-V and also when I'm doing configuration of the network adaptors. Since my Television is IP based it also crashes at the same time. The tech support for my internet suggested that the Virtual machine in HyperV was "crashing the DNS pool"  but I have no clue what that means.  Does anyone know of what might cause this or possibly how to fix it?

Thanks
