Cannot start VM - IDE Emulator Failed to Power on with Error 'The service cannot be started, either because it is disabled or because it has no enabled devices associated with it.'

HI all.

New install of 2008R2 on HP DL-380 G6.  I have created (several) VM's none of which will start.  If I remove the IDE Hard Disk and add a DVD of the OS ISO, it will boot and start the install (although with no HDD).

It seems like the IDE controller is working ok - it is what the DVD drive is using, but it cannot mount a VHD.  The error indicates a driver is not working (although the DVD on IDE works fine) so something to do with VHD?  I can attach the VHD in disk management, so it does not seem corrupt - again I have tried with both dynamic and fixed VHDs.

Full error is:

'Test1' failed to start. (Virtual machine ID 4320D2D6-DF7E-40D2-BD0F-9562CBB9F052)

'Test1' Microsoft Emulated IDE Controller (Instance ID {83F8638B-8DCA-4152-9EDA-2CA8B33039B4}): Failed to Power on with Error 'The service cannot be started, either because it is disabled or because it has no enabled devices associated with it.' External switch connectivity issues on Windows 8.1

Hello,

I have a problem which is driving me crazy for a few days now. I have a Windows 8.1 Enterprise desktop PC with Hyper-V installed on it. I have created an External virtual switch in Hyper-V manager and connected it to my one and only physical wired network adapter. I have ticked the checkbox to allow management host to share the adapter. I have installed a Windows 2008 R2 Standard VM on it and connected the network adapter to the External virtual switch.

The problem:

The host has internet and LAN connectivity.
The VM has no internet nor LAN connectivity, but is able to ping the host.
The host can ping the VM.
The VM does not receive an IP address via DHCP (yes there is a DHCP server active in our LAN)
Assigning a static IP address to the VM does not work (it can only ping the host, not the LAN or internet).

It seems like the External virtual switch is acting like an internal one. Atleast, it shows the same behaviour. The network card in the desktop is an Intel 82578DM wired network card.

What am I doing wrong here? I am using the exact same setup as on our 2012 Datacenter servers which are working perfectly fine. Is there maybe something wrong with the network adapter driver?

VM diskResources showing it's on two CSV after storage migration

I've recently migrated a VM XXX from csv01 to csv05 and everything works fine. However I'm trying to migrate all VMs on CSV01 to new 2012 R2 cluster; VM Xxx showing up in copy node wizard. When I going into VMM 2012 powershell and run get-vm XXX I see that DiskResources has csv01 and csv05. Anyone knows how to remove the assoication from csv01? I've checked that server only has one disk which is on csv05;also checkpoint path pointing to csv05.

current cluster is 2008 R2, VM is window 2008 R2. new cluster is 2012 R2. running Vmm 2012.

this is going to be a problem because when I offline csv01 on old cluster, server xxx will failed and won't come online.

thanks.

initial replication fails repeatedly

2102R2 hosts. Start initial replication for VM and after a period of time it fails, I resume replication and it goes on for a while longer and fails again. The event log shows Event ID 33680, followed immediately by 32086, followed immediately 32022. I cannot figure out what is causing the failure and the event id's provide no information. I am not sure how to start troubleshooting this one.

thanks

CSV Redirected status is not displayed in cluster MMC

I've seen a strange behaviour in the cluster's MMC

I have created a cluster with 2 Windows Server 2012 R2 and a HP MSA FC storage.

2 LUNs were created : one for quorum and the other for VHDX storage configured as CSV.

In order to test redirected access of CSV disk, I've unmapped the storage LUN for node 2 from within the MSA management interface (SMU).

Then :

- Node 1 is accessing fine the LUN

- Node 2 can't access it through FC

As expected node 2 didn't loose access to storage. Get-ClusterSharedVolumeState shows that the volume is "BlockRedirected" for node 2. While copying data on the CSV from node 2 I can see that the network dedicated to CSV is heavy loaded.

With the Cluster MMC, things are more complicated : the CSV status is green "OnLine" (I expected to see yellow / redirected). Right Click / Properties shows "no" for redirected access... (it is actually true!)

The only way to figure out that the disk is redirected is displaying critical events from event log for this disk.

Is it a normal behaviour ? Shouldn't the MMC display the actual status of the disk ?

Multiple Ethernet adapter or lan card on Hyper-v host

My Hyper-v 2012 R2 host has the following configuration.

PC: HP 3330 Micro Tower

RAM : 4GB

network adapter : 2

1. Realtek PCI GRE family ( integrated with motherboard)

2. 10/100 PCI Ethernet Adapter (external, brand: Tenda model : L8139D

I have successfully inserted the PCI LAN card (Tenda) to the PCI slot. The problem is hyper -v 2012 R2 is not recognizing the external PCI LAN card, though it is working fine with the built-in Ethernet adapter ( Realtek). When I connect the network cable to that card Hyper-v shows nothing at " Available Network Adapters " option of " 8> Network Settings" menu. I have checked the card and  the cable with other machine and i also have tested the card with different operating system in this machine they are all working fine. Please help me. thanks in advance.

How to merge vhd and avhd from deleted VM in Windows Server 2008 R2 Hyper-V

$

Hello everyone,

I am running Windows Server 2008 R2 Datacenter SP1 with Hyper-V. I kind of messed up and accidentally deleted a VM that had snapshots. Since this was a critical VM, I had to come up with a quick fix to get my network running again, and I created a new VM. But since the original VM had snapshots the only way Hyper-V would let me start the VM was if I set the avhd as the hdd. I know this is not the right way to do things. The new VM is running fine though. How can I merge the original vhd and avhd?

Any help is appreciated! Thanks!

Unplanned failover in a Hyper-V cluster vs unplanned failover in an ordinary (not Hyper-V) cluster

Hello!

Please excuse me if you think my question is silly, but before deploying something  in a production environment I'd like to dot the i's  and cross the t's.

1) Suppose there's a two node cluster with a Hyper-V role that hosts a number of highly available VM.

If the both cluster nodes are up and running an administrator can initiate a planned failover wich will transfer all VMsincluding their system state to another node without downtime.

In case any cluster node goes down unexpectedly the unplanned failover fires up that will transfer all VMs to another nodeWITHOUT their system state. As far as I understand this can lead to some data loss.

http://itknowledgeexchange.techtarget.com/itanswers/how-does-live-migration-differ-from-vm-failover/

If, for example, I have an Exchange vm and it would be transfered to the second node during unplanned failover in the Hyper-V cluster I will lose some data by design.

2) Suppose there's a two node cluster with the Exchange clustered installation: in case one node crashes the other takes over without any data loss.

Conclusion: it's more disaster resilient to implement some server role in an "ordinary" cluster that deploy it inside a vm in the Hyper-V cluster.

Is it correct?

Thank you in advance,

Michael

copy vm template as a package

Hi all,

I want to give my VM template as package.

I have a SCVMM installed on Windows. I have created a custom Linux VM and is up and running. I have created a VM Template using this existing VM. The Template is generated (which is a folder with vhd files) and is available in the SCVMM library share.

Now I want to copy the Template folder to another Share, so as to enable people to copy the template from the share to deploy VMs in their setups. How can I do this?

I manually copied the folder with the vhd files to another SCVMM server, did a refresh Server. But the SCVMM is not showing the folder as a template.

Please share some light on copying this template to another host..

The link http://wiki.sqlis.com/default.aspx/SQLISWiki/PackageTemplates.html in similar post looks broken.

Thanks in advance,

No Hyperv Virtuals get DHCP address - but Physical Host Can

HyperV Server 2012 Core on a dedicated machine on local domain.

Machine connected directly into local network that has a DC running DHCP.

None of the VM's can get a DHCP Address from the server. Even if i set static addresses still they cannot route anywhere, cannot even ping the HyperV server they are sat on but other local machines can!!!!

The physical host cant ping the

The physical HyperV server has no problem getting a DHCP address or any routing issues, nor do any of the other clients on the local network, including another HyperV server running server VM's

What ive tried so far

  • Deleted Virtual Switch and removed the NIC from the virtual hosts in HyperV Manager- then re-adding new one.
  • Put in a different network card
  • Removed Physical host from Domain, renamed machine to different name and re-joined
  • Used different IP addresses for the Physical host
  • Reloaded the HyperV server from scratch and created new VM.

Ive had HyperV previously running on this machine without problem, so now i cant see why i cant get it running again.

Anybody have any suggestions on what i can try next, im all out of ideas.

Disk2VHD

Dear all,

I have used Disk2VHD to perform a P2V conversion of a W3K SP2 server. However when I boot the VHD in W8K R2 SP1 Hyper-V console there is no mouse input. I have installed the integration services via the actions menu and also ensured that all the integration services are offered.

Can anyone offer any assistance on how to get the mouse input to work?

Hi,

I got this error on one of the VM (web server) backed up usng HYPER-V 2008 R2 and when I looked up, there is an microsoft hotfix for the same issue.

Microsoft KB Hotfix:
A backup of virtual machines fails when you use the Hyper-V VSS writer to back up virtual machines concurrently on a computer that is running Windows Server 2008

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/971394

But, the VM (web server) is running Windows 2008 R2 - SP1.

Hotfix says - To apply this hotfix, your computer must be running one of the following operating systems:

  • Windows Server 2008
  • Windows Server 2008 Service Pack 2 (SP2)

Does it mean it does not apply to Windows 2008 R2 | SP1 ?

When I checked the :

Swprv.dll version, it was higher than the one mentioned in the hotfix.

Thanks for any help.

0xc00002e2 - Virtualized domain controller does not start after storage lost connection to host

Hello,

We have a host (Windows Server 2012) and a storage attached via iSCSI. Yesterday the host lost connection to the storage for a couple of seconds. After this, I found the domain controller VM turned off (which also is a Windows Server 2012). Now, when I try to start it, I get blue screen, with 0xc00002e2 error.

I red some articles on how to recover from this error, but the problem is that if I try to start in DSRM, I enter the Admin password and the the screen turns black and nothing happens any more. Now, I can only access the Command Prompt window. Also, I was able to copy the vhdx to my PC and mount it. So I can see the files in it.

Is there any way to restore this DC?

P.S. This is the only DC in the organization.

Many thanks,
Adrian

Migrate Hyper v server

Hello All

Currently we have Hyper V server based on windows server 2008 R2.We are using Windows server backup to backup the host and the Guests VM s.Guest VM s  include Windows sbs 2008 , other windows 2008 R2 servers and windows  XP and windows 7 clients .

We have purchased a new physical server and planning to install windows server 2012 R2 , install the Hyper v server role and migrate all VM s from the old Hyper v server.

Our management has decided to use the  physical hard drives which are currently being used on the current Hyper v server  on the new hyper v server.

Based on the above information what would be the best method that we can take to get the migration completed? Can we use the current Hyper backup top extract data on the new hyper v server and then import the VM s onto the new server

what are the things that we need to be careful when it comes to Licensing ?

Many thanks

3 Node hyper-V 2012 R2 Failover Clustering with Storage spaces on one of the Hyper-V hosts

$

Hi,

We have 3x Dell R720s with 5x 600GB 3.5 15K SAS and 128 GB RAM each. Was wondering if I could setup a Fail-over Hyper-V 2012 R2 Clustering with these 3 with the shared storage for the CSV being provided by one of the Hyper-V hosts with storage spaces installed (Is storage spaces supported on Hyper-V?) Or I can use a 2-Node Failover clustering and the third one as a standalone Hyper-V or Server 2012 R2 with Hyper-V and storage spaces.

Each Server comes with QP 1G and a DP10G nics so that I can dedicate the 10G nics for iSCSI

Dont have a SAN or a 10G switch so it would be a crossover cable connection between the servers.

Most of the VMs would be Non-HA. Exchange 2010, Sharepoint 2010 and SQL Server 2008 R2 would be the only VMS running as HA-VMs. CSV for the Hyper-V Failover cluster would be provided by the storage spaces.

Hyper-V guest machine unable to play or rip CDs

Hi,

I have a Windows 7 VM on which I would like to play and rip CDs. I defined the CD/DVD drive to point on the physical CD/DVD drive.

When I insert an audio CD, the VM detects the insertion but it is not able nor to play nor to rip files.

On VM I can correctly play MP3 and other media. Only physical audio CD cannot play.

Any suggestion on how to solve the problem?

Thank you.

hyper-v network virtualization gateway

$

Hi

I am planning a small testlab for Hyper-V network virtualization and SCVMM 2012 SP1. Now I am confused about the virtualization gateway. My understanding is that when the VMs needs external connection (Internet, other physical host etc.) then I need a virtualization gateway. Right?

So, is it possible to configure a Hyper-V Host itself or a VM as a virtualization gateway for a testlab?

Moreover, when you configure a virtualization Gateway with Windows Server 2012 can you manage it through SCVMM 2012 SP1or do you need maintain it manually?

Thx
