Add Physical Hard Drive

Server 2012 core with native hyper-v. My Server Core install has an OS hard drive, and a Data hard drive. I am trying to attach the Data drive as a physical disk to a virtual machine i have created. When i try to add 'Disk Drive', the 'Physical Hard Disk' selection is disabled, and i can only select a virtual hard disk to use. I brought the data drive offline using diskpart on the host, still vm does not see the physical drive. What do i have to do to get the vm to see the physical drive?

Integration services

Hi,

i have Hyper-V host 2012 R2 on which only hyper-V role is installed and computer is in domain enviroment. I have installed windows 2012 virtual machine and installed hyper-V integration tools on that virtual machine. Till here no error messages, no warning nothing. After rebooting virtual machine mouse network doesn't work. So after a few tries i have installed legacy network card which guest VM detects correct drivers. After digging deeper i saw that guest VM doesn't properly detect drivers saying error code 52 and error code 39 ( or that drivers are not digitally signed or damaged). i have exported drivers from vmguest.iso from another host and tried to install but no luck. Both computers are up to date, everything else is working fine, no error messaged.

wrong drivers are:

MS GHyper-V video, MS Hyper-V Virtual keyboard,MS Hyper-V Network, MS hyper-V S3 Cap, MS Hyper-V generation counter.

Any ideas?

Hyper-V replication in Windows Server 2012 R2: Error Applying Network Adapter Changes

$

Hello!

I have two standalone host machines - Host1 and Host3 (both running WinServer 2012 R2), Host1 is currently running DC2 VM.

IP settings:

Host1: adapter1 = 10.3.0.61 (is NOT used by Hyper-V), adapter2 = 10.1.1.1 (is used by Hyper-V)

Host3: adapter1 = 10.3.0.63 (is NOT used by Hyper-V), adapter2 = 10.1.1.3 (is used by Hyper-V)

DC2: 10.1.1.11

I managed to set up replication of this DC2 VM from Host1 to Host3 successfully using certificate-based authentication. The completing window titled "Enabling replication for DC2" said

"The network adapters for the Replica virtual machine are not connected to any network . You can manually configure the network adapter settings for the Replica virtual machine."

I then tried to connect the DC2 replica on Host3 to the only available virtual switch (derived from Host3\adapter2) and got the error:

The Host1's and Host3's firewall are turned off, there's no any additional software installed on Host1 and Host3.

What can be wrong with this D-Link virtual swich?

Thank you in advance,

Michael

Hyper V, giving users access to selected vm's

Extra Information:

Server is running windows server 2012, clients will connect over server 2008

Here is a copy of the text:

Hello,
I have a server 2012 machine set up with Hyper-V installed.

I would like to have some users have access to use (not modify hardware etc) some vm's (not all of the vm's)
The Users may access their vm's simultaneously.
Users would ideally be able to stop/start/restart their vm's.
The users can either be local or obtained from an already-existing Active Directory.
How can i assign the user rights for the vm's, and what do i need present on the user's PC's?
Thanks
Edit:
I have followed this guide:
http://andersonpatricio.ca/how-to-delegate-access-in-hyper-v/
which lets me assign tasks to certain users.
However i still cannot assign rights on specific vm's.

new Dell server with quad port Intel NIC. How should I configure this?

I have a Dell Poweredge R720 with a quadport Intel NIC, connecting to a single Dell Powerconnect 2848.  I don't think this switch can anything that special, so how should the 4 ports of the NIC be configured for maximum performance?

Since all the ports are on a single NIC, I don't think there's any real point to building it for redundancy.

Thanks.

Boot Failed. EFI SCSI Device 1. Hyper-V Windows 2012 R2 Preview

Hello,

I am new to Hyper-V. I installed Windows Server 2012 R2  Preview on a physical server and installed Hyper-V role on it.

I am trying to install Windows 2008 R2 on Hyper-V as a guest OS.

From Hyper-V manager, I created a VM and supplied 2008 R2 ISO as a boot device.

Windows 2008 R2 ISO is bootable. I have used the same ISO on VMware and it works.

I connected the VM and powered on, but OS instalaltion doesn't start.

I get error " Boot Failed. EFI SCSI Device 1." Below is th screen capture.

How to fix this problem ?

How do I go to Hyper-v VM BIOS settings ?

How do I change the boot sequence for Hyper-V VM ?

Thanks ! Jayawardhane

Copying files to VM vhdx very, very slow!

Hi,

I am setting up my first Virtualised environment (Hyper-V 2012 R2) on a Dell Poweredge R720 and I am experiencing performance issues when copy files (around 500mb) from an existing physical server to a virtual Window 2012 R2 server.

The copying is saying that the throughput is around 10kbps/sec which is horrendously slow.

OK I will now describe what I have done so far.

Brand new sever was purchase from Dell and it has:

32GB of RAM
2 RAID virtual disks, the first in RAID 1 configuration with 2 x 2TB (2TB mirror) SAS 7200 hdds where I have installed my Windows 2012 R2 Core server. The second is RAID 5 with 3 x 2TB SAS 7200 hdds, total storage under 4TB.
Perc H310 Raid controller.
Twin Intel 2.4Ghz Quad core XEON CPUS

I have created 2 virtual machines under my host OS, the first is a Windows 2012 R2 backup domain controller(we have a Windows 2003 R2 physical server which has had its AD schema already upgraded as primary DC).

There is 1 forest, 1 domain, therefore, it is a small network.

When I am copying data or files from the physical server to the guest Windows 2012 R2 VM the throughput is very, very low. For 500MB it is going to take 4 hours.

I have created a 4 card NIC team on the hyper-visor to improve network throughput.

The VMs were created with a base 2GB dynamic RAM and a 200GB dynamic Vhdd and 1 processor.

What am I doing wrong?

I have read somewhere that:

1)I should be using fixed Virtual HDDs instead on dynamic ones. I should be doing the same with RAM as wel.
2) Change the Perc H310 for either a Perc H710 or Perc H710P, Perc H810.
3) Use 10K or 15K RPM drives. This would be expensive.

The server platform was not specified by me. The client told me that he wanted to virtualize his server and now I am experiencing severe bottlenecks.

What can I do to improve things dramatically?

Thanks

Regards

Hi,  Hoping somebody can help with this issue and have a solution.

I have a server located in a DC which is running hyper-v server. I have been give some IP's to use on the virtual servers which are on a /32. These IP's have been pushed to the NIC on the hyperv host. How do i get these to work on the virtual machines.

I have been trying many different things but i just can't seem to get it work.

Hoping somebody can offer some advice or point me in the right direction

SSD or SATA for best hypervisor performance?

Windows Server 2012 R2

I'm going to rebuild my home lab server.  I have a 250GB SSD and a 1TB+ SATA drive.  I'm going to have about 10VMs on the system, most running all at the same time.

I think it's simple to assume that any VM with lots of IO would be best placed on the SSD, but what about the hypervisor itself?

It's a small SSD, so I'll need every GB I can get...  Will placing the hypervisor on the SSD vs SATA have any performance impacts to the system overall?

VHD and VHDX won't Compact

I also have the same problem.

If I compact a VHD or VHDX the compact runs for one second and ends, and the VM's remain uncompacted.

I am using REFS format on the drive, and the VM's are Windows 7 x86, if that makes any difference.

I have disabled System Restore in VM's, as that was a known problem with 2008 R2.

Can this be reported as a bug in Server 2012 RC.

Hyper-V Harddrive Array Questions

Hi All,

I have a HP ML350P Gen8 server to upgrade and would like an opinion on the best way to configure the storage array. I am picking up from some else's start/mistakes so some of it may not be the best.

Current Setup:

HP ML350P

2x Xeon E5-2609 2.4Ghz

24GB Ram (2x8 2x4)

P420i 512MB with 3x 1TB Sata 7.2K in Raid 5 = 2TB Raid 5

Server 2012 Datacenter Edition.

4x Hyper-V VM's

DC - 19GB VHDX (127GB Limit) - DC and Shadow Protect.

File - 23GB VHDX (127GB Limit) and 500GB VHD - High Priority File Store and Shadow Protect. Industry DB stored Here. Shadow Protect.

Mail - 41GB VHDX (127GB Limit) and 500GB VHD - Exchange Only and Shadow Protect.

Remote - 31GB VHDX (127GB Limit) - Office 2010, User Access, Industry App Front End and Shadow Protect.

Currently they have approx 40 users with about 15 concurrent users. They would like to increase this to as much as 45 concurrent and 120 users in total.

I am currently testing their industry application for Ram usage per person. The application is a private DB backed application but has a similar IO load to SQL.

I would like to;

Upgrade Ram to something like 64GB (may be less once the figures are ready)

Change to SAS HDD's with either 1 array pool or as many needed.

Convert all VHDX to VHD

Tune the Hyper-V settings as currently the CPU is about 5% at even the busy periods with the current CPU allocations. Also Ram is way under utilized in the current config.

Can you guys please recommend the array setup you would look to use?

-2x 146GB 15K Raid-1 for Host and a Raid-10 for VM storage?

-Separate Arrays for each VM? (this would prob limit us to mirror sets)

-1 big Raid-10 pool with host and VM's?

Please let me know if I am missing any info.

Thank you.

Cannot Logon to VM from Hyper-V Manager Via Remote Desktop. Keyboard Input Not Recognized

Hello All:

I'm having an issue with one VM on a Windows Server 2008 R2 host machine.  I'll refer to the host machine as Host and the two virtual machines as VMa and VMb.  Here goes...

I log on to the Host via Remote Desktop (either from a MacBook or iOS) and start the Hyper-V Manager application.  Originally everything was working just fine and I could start a connection via Hyper-V Manager to both VMa and VMb.  At one point, after installing some updates, I restarted VMa.  After it restarted, I again attempted to logon by connecting through the Hyper-V Manager.  The main startup screen for VMa comes up as expected, I then hit the Ctl-Alt-Delete button on the Manager Connection window and that brings me to the logon screen.  Administrator is the default user ID and in the Password field, there are grey letters saying Password.  I use the mouse to click in the password field and the grey Password disappears and the insert cursor appears in the field.  Then, using the keyboard, I attempt to enter in the password for VMa, but nothing happens.  No input is received by VMa.  Eventually, the logon screen times out and VMa returns to the main startup screen. If I go through the exact same process with VMb, everything works as expected and I can logon and administer the server as usual.

I have restarted the host and the VM's, but it makes no difference.  VMa remains inaccessible to me.  I've tried everything I can think of to regain access, but to no avail.

Any thoughts or ideas on how to re-access VMa would be most appreciated!  Otherwise, I guess I will have to delete and recreate it.

Hi,

How to share Internet between Windows Server 2008 R2 and VM through Hyper V. I have created a 'Internal' Network in Virtual Network Manager in Hyper V. I also tried sharing my Wireless Network but it is not getting connected.

I have attached screenshot of my connections.

Replica - target server hung

The target server - the one that is being replicated to - in a 2012 HyperV Replica environment seems to have hung for over 24 hours and Replica has been failing as a result. What would be the steps required if were going to reboot the target?  Do we have to pause Replica or can we just reboot?  Even if we don't have to in theory pause Replica I would like the procedures for both circumstances - reboot with pause and reboot without pause.

Replica - bad drive on target

The hard drive on a target server - the one that is being replicated to - in a 2012 HyperV Replica environment seems to be failing - it looks like bad blocks - and Replica seems to be failing as a result intermittently for the last 48 hours, worsening as it goes along.

What steps should we take to replace the target drive? Note the source VM's are quite large so if there is any way within the procedure recommended for us to clone the existing drive so we don't have to start the Replica from scratch it would be preferred.

Hi guys,

Server OS: Windows Server 2012 R2

I have a VM Gen2 with following settings:

I can boot fine from the same .iso from a Gen1 VM so the .iso is bootable.

I know that the Gen2 VM uses SCSI instead of IDE, but I have no clue regarding how to boot from the .iso..

Any ideas?

Thanks in advance!

Kenny

Converged Fabric without Storage Traffic

$

I have a DataOn 9220 CiB. 2 nodes, each with a dual-port 10gb nic going to a single 10g switch. They also have a 1g nic connected internally directly to eachother. Storage is via direct SAS connection to internal dual-port drives, setup as CSVs. I'm not creating a SoFS. These two nodes have tons of RAM and will be the Hyper-V compute nodes, accessing the SAS drives directly.

What's the best way to setup my converged network fabric, considering I don't have any storage traffic on it?

I've been playing with some configs. Mostly teaming the two ports on the dual port 10g nic in dynamic switch independant mode. Then creating vlans for mangement and live migration. What am I missing, and what should the QoS settings on each vlan be? How could I best leverage the 1g node-to-node internal connection?

(I'll eventually have another 10g switch for redundancy) Thanks.
