hyper-v manager in windows 8.1 cannot connect to hyper-v server. RPC server unavailable

I am setting up a new server. I installed Hyper-V 2012 R2 on it and want to manage it remotely with Hyper-V manager from a Windows 8.1 computer. I am unable to communicate with the computer with the server. Hyper-V manager gives me the following error: RPC Server Unavailable. Unable to establish communication between "the hypervserver" and "the W8.1station". Both computer are located in the same subnet and both are on the same domain.

I configured the server with a fixed IP, DNS, to accept pings, connected it to the domain and set it up to allow remote access and management. Although I do not think it is necessary, I added my domain account to the administrators group in the hyper-V server. I can perfectly ping the server and remote into the server from the W8.1 station. From he server I can also ping the W8.1 station as well as exterior websites (DNS functionality is ok).

I have play with the firewall in both, the Hyper-V server and the management station and have not being able to get them to communicate. Blaming the Hyper-V server for all this and the great time that I have already spent on this problem, I borrowed a Windos 7 Pro computer, installed RSAT and enabled the Hyper-V manager in that computer. Launched the manager AND CONNECTED TO THE HYPER-V SERVER WITH NO PROBLEMS AT ALL !!!!!!!

I have read a lot already about this but most people having this issue are setting up servers in a workgroup environment, and almost nobody is using Windows 8.1 as the management station. Can someone PLEASE give me a hand with this problem??

Thanks to you all !!!

Windows 7 and Hyper-V 2012

Hello,

I turned off firewall from both my client (windows 7) and server (hyper-v 2012). I can access the Hyper-V manager and it says "No Virutal Machine was Found". So I went NEW > Virtual Machine and created a new Virtual Machine. While it was creating the Hard Drive. It says

"The Server encountered and error while configuring hard disk on test" (I called it test to test it out)

"RPC server is unavailable. Unable to establish communication between 'server' and 'client'."

I am new to windows Hyper-V so please bear with me. I already added a new user using: http://blogs.technet.com/b/jhoward/archive/2008/11/14/configure-hyper-v-remote-management-in-seconds.aspx

Hyper-V Virtual Machine Critical error (RAID 5)

Hello

I have received call from my manager today from one of our site regarding hyper-v issue.

So here's the issue he stated as follows:

One of the IT technician was assigned to add 8TB HDD in a SAN just to add more storage space for our servers

So he went to the server room and boom he finished the job in minutes and started to configure RAID from his laptop like its all good as always.

few hours later users started to complain they can't get access to their staff share Drive well guess out all of the hyper _ v machine stopped working (critical error) on the server he installed those TBs, the hyper -v E drive gone missing where all the virtual machines were stored.

and lastly he told me they already had RAID 5 implemented on that server. To be honest I don't know much either and only possible cause of course would be the RAID which should have been taken under consideration before making such move.

I was asked to give them a hand on this tomorrow and I will, just play around with it for bit and see where I can Lead to.

Any help would be highly appreciated!

Networking problem with shared nothing live migration over SMB 3.0

Hello!

My basic setup atm consists of 2 Windows Server 2012 R2 nodes, network configuration was basicly done as discribed in this video: http://www.it-cast.de/hyperv/hyper-v-unter-windows-server-2012-r2-preview-teil-4-die-livemigration/

So the 2 nodes have 4 port 1Gbit adapters and i configured ports 1 and 2 to be on different subnets and directly attached between the nodes. Here's the thing now, if i move data (shared folders) between the nodes i get fully pumped up 230MB/sec and both links are used by SMB3.0.

I also get full link usage when i move a VM in status "Shutdown". BUT if i try to move the VM in status "Running" both links get used as well, but this time there is a magic 800mbit (or maybe 1 gigabit, i dont get gigabit speed with a single link either, while live migration) barrier which i cannot overcome. (The 800mbit simply get split up evenly over the number of links)

I searched for nearly 5 days until now and i cant find the error in this setup.

(For the curious, RSS is enabled with 8 queues and as far as SMB 3.0 goes, this setup seems to be well working)

Thanks for your help in advance, i really dont know how to get any further with this problem.

Kind Regards

Rico

I'm seing event 32213 in Hyper-V SynthFC logs on my 3 host cluster.

Event 32213
No LUNs have appeared for Synthetic Fibre Channel HBA Fibre Channel Adapter. The VM has been started after the timeout period (90 seconds). Please review the LUN mappings for the virtual port. (Virtual machine ID)

My VM can no longer see the shared storage. I'm looking for information regarding this warning.

My environment consists of:
3 node cluster running Windows 2012
VM is running Windows 2008R2. This VM is part of a 2 Node SQL cluster. The other node in the cluster can see the storage.

Any assistance with this issue would greatly be appreciated.
Thank you!

Hyper-V error 29292 with HTTPS replication

Hello!

I have two host machines - Host1 and Host3 (WinServer 2012R2), Host1 contains DC2 VM that is being replicated to Host3 using certificates.

Yesterday I shut down both servers and when I turned them on today morning Hyper-V statred complaining:

The Host3 machine is up and running, its firewall is disabled, its certificate is ok, no changes have been applied to either server.

Given that Host3 doesn't have IIS installed how can I check that Host3 is accessable on SSL port? What steps should I take in this situation?

Thank you in advance,

Michael

Reverse failover to Primary

$

Hey guys,

So I've read around but found no real concrete answer for what I'm looking for. Here is my scenario. Host1 server was a primary server running VMs. Host2 was the replica where the VMs replicated to. Host1 went down 1.5 weeks ago. C-drive was corrupt and not recoverable. Host1 has 2 drive array. 1 drive array was a RAID1 running the C drive and 2nd drive array is a RAID5 running the data drive where all the VMs are stored. I wiped the C drive and installed a fresh copy of 2012 with Hyper-V role. It does have the same name. Host2 still recognizes Host1 as the primary. Could I use reverse replication in this scenario and use the 3rd method to overwrite the 1.5 week old vhdx files? I need to return to the original setup where Host1 is the primary. Let me know if more details are necessary.

Thank you,

Uninstall Hyper-V Server 2012

Hi, I've installed Hyper-V Server 2012 on a Windows Server 2008 R2 not realizing it was going to completely change the operating system. Now the server boots into Hyper-v 2012. Is there a way to uninstall/revert? Or do I have to restore from backup?

adding a partition to the existing harddisk

Hi,

I created a VM with 80GB VHDX ( this is the only partition C drive ) and installed OS on that. Now I would like to create one more partition (D drive with 80GB). how can I do this ?

while creating the VM, on the host I created the vhdx in a folder eg. dcserver. Can I create the new vhdx or vhd on the same folder ?

Thanks in advance

there is no enough disk space

I am faced another problem when I was creating VM. Around 80%, it paused and the error was "there is not enough space".

I have at least 127 GB available in my hard drive disk. Also, when I tried to create VHD, it allowed me only dynamic, not fixed.

it says you don't have enough disk space when I try to create fixed vhd. What is going on?

Cannot ping large packets after Installing then Removing HyperV on Server 2008 R2 x64

Hi,

We have installed the HyperV role and did some testing and now removed the role, the virtual switch and now if we go to a command prompt and use the command

"ping -l 1472 servername"

We do not get a response from the server at all. This command did work before installing the role so what has the Hyper V changed and not returned to its original setting after uninstalling?

The commmand does work without "-l" setting but obviously the packet size is alot smaller.

Licensing 2012 Datacenter

$

Hello,

one of our Customers has currently four Windows Server 2008 R2 (OEM) on a ESXi Cluster. (For each host he has a 2008 R2 Enterprise License)

He already setup a new Hyper-V Cluster with Windows Server 2012 Datacenter, again for each host one license.

As I understand the licensing for 2012 he can transfer/migrate the four 2008 Servers to the Hyper-V Cluster. Because of unlimeted Vose and Downgrade rights.

On the old ESXi Hosts he could install again four Servers because this licenses are now free. (Or 8 if he use each host alone, without cluster)

Another Question is about Hyper-V Replica. Is it possible (Licensing) to replicate a Virtuell Machine (Win 2012 Datacenter) from and Hyper-V Datacenter Cluster to an Windows Server 2012 Standard Server? Or must be the Replica Host also a Datacenter Version, if he wants to transfer a Datacenter virtual Machine?

Standard and Datacenter are functional the same so technically it works but licensing?

Can anyone tell me if this is correct or should I contact the Microsoft Licensing Team?

I hope my english is good enough to explain it...

Best Regards

Mathias

external network traffic between to vms on the same host

Hi

My question is regarding external network traffic between to vms on the same host.

VM “A” is located on “host1” with an external virtual switch “VLAN100”

VM “B” is also located on “host1” with the same external switch “VLAN100”

VM “A” and “B” generate heavy network traffic between them, but must be on an external network to communicate with other servers.

Will network traffic between “A” and “B” be “host internal” (filtered by the Hyper-V host) or will network traffic between the vms be go through the physical network switch which the host is attached to?

Is there any benefits regarding to network traffic if VM “A” and “B” are on the same Hyper-V host?

Thanks!

Kristian

Gen 2 Server 2012 VMs fail to start after December Windows Updates

$

I've been able to reproduce this on two separate hosts (both Win 8.1 Pro) running Gen 2 Windows Server 2012 VMs. I believe it is after the December 2012 round of updates (and I'm trying to confirm which specific one), the VMs fail to boot, indicating that applying a patch failed and it is reverting the changes -- it enters a reboot loop which I'm unable to get out of.

Has anyone else experienced this with Gen 2 Server 2012 VMs?

Problem using live-migration on Shared-Nothing.

$

I am trying to do a live migration between two Hyper-V 2012 hosts:

From Workload5 -> Workload4

When i try to migrate i get the following error:

Virtual machine migration operation failed to migration source.
Failed to establish a conection with host 'WORKLOAD4' No credentials are available in the security package (0x8009030E)....

On both servers live migration is enabled using kerberos, and the AD delegation are created for both machines:

For Workload4, the following services has been added for workload5:

cifs, Hyper-V Replica Service, Microsoft Virtual System Migration Service, RestrictedKrbHost

This is for workload4, the same (but other direction is done with workload5).

In the event log i get 3 errors:

- Failed to receive data for a Virtual Machine migration: An existing connection was forcibly closed by the remote host. (0x80072746).

- The Virtual Machine Management Service failed to authenticate the connection for a Virtual Machine migration at the destination host: An existing connection was forcibly closed by the remote host. (0x80072746).

- The Virtual Machine Management Service blocked a connection request for a Virtual Machine migration from client address '10.3.1.60': An existing connection was forcibly closed by the remote host. (0x80072746).

I must say, i don't get that much of this, so i hope you can help troubleshoot...

On another note, i am able to use replication..

Hi,

Wanting to install sbs 2011 on my mac and be able to have one be a test SBS and the other be a live SBS using VMware Fusion.

When trying to install SBS disk I receive an error message "Operating system not found"

Also, wondering which CD to install first and if this is the cause of the error message.

Any assistance is much appreciated.
