Hyper V Virtual Machines with Pass Through Disk Randomly Shutdown with vmclusres.dll either crashed or deadlocked!!

I'm running 4 Dell blades with 2008R2 Datacenter with SP1 in a failover cluster and connected to a Compellent FC SAN.

We have about 110 VM's currently running, the system has been up and running fine until the last week or so when we added around 10 new VM's with Pass Through Disk.  Before that we only had 6 machines with pass throughs and they ran fine without any problems.

The failover cluster snap-in is very slow to load the storage page that list all connected storage.

On the Application page if you click on a Vm with a pass though disk it is slow to load but one without a pass through loads up quickly.

I've read about iscsi timeout problems but I haven't seen anything about FC having the same problems.

Just looking for some new idea to try because I'm all out..  Let me knwo what other information would be helpful...

Thanks

Danny

Virtual Machine Performance failure when configured on less Startup RAM

I have Physical Server with Hyper V enabled have 8 CPU and 32 GB of RAM (Hyper V enabled host server with windows server 208 r2 enterprise edition)

The SQL 2008 R2 virtual server is created on Hyper V is down when I configure it with  less startup RAM (10 GB, 4 processor), the machine is started and running but the performance is very poor but when the same machine is configured with 24 GB of startup RAM with 4 processor then its performance is at the highest.

If high amount of startup RAM is needed then the dynamic is failure on my end, My server is down.

Upgrade from 2008 to 2008R2 and upgrade from standard to enterprise

We have a Windows 2008 Standard Server running Hyper-V.  We needed to bump its memory up, so we had to upgrade it to Enterprise.  In buying the new license, we decided to also move it to 2008R2 at the same time.  I did some research online and found two scenarios when it comes to upgrading a Hyper-V server.

1) Going from 2008 to 2008R2 - What was stated was that this will uninstall the Hyper-V role, and you would have to reinstall it when done.

2) Going from standard to enterprise - This would wipe out your virtual machine config files, and you would have to recreate your VM's using the VHD files.

I did the upgrade in one shot.  I put in the 2008R2 disc, chose Enterprise, and chose upgrade.  The upgrade ran over about an hour.  When it was done, my machine was not only upgrade to 2008R2 Enterprise, but Hyper-V was still installed, and all of my Virtual Machines were still there.  I had to recreate my "Virtual Networks", and away they went.

Can anyone explain why?  I should note that I upgraded using 2008R2 with Service Pack 1.

Unable to Ping Hyper-V Server after Setting up a External Virtual Network

I was on my client machine in the Hyper-V remote Manager studio and was connected to the hyper-v server and setting up the external virtual network so I could create my first virtual machine. In the networking section when I selected external as the type for the networking of the virtuals, the manager warned me that communication might be lost and asked if I wanted to proceed. To which I selected it.

Then a small box with a continously running progress bar came up and it never exited. After 2 minutes I killed management studio from the task manager for the modal dialog box never exited. Upon restart of the manager, it couldn't see the server.

I rebooted both the server and the client and there appears that communication to the server is now impossible. I can ping from the server to client, but not visa versa. Here are the stats

  • Hyper-V server 2012 RC (stand alone not as role)
  • Windows 7 client
  • Installed Hyper-V remote management configuration on both machines
  • Ping fails going from client to server (or all machines)
  • Ping succeeds going from server to client.

What can I do to resolve this issue? Can I roll back the virtual network settings using PowerShell? If so what are those commands?

Feature Request: vmconnect.exe full screen mode command-line switch

Hello Microsoft:

Please add a command-line switch to VMCONNECT.EXE to connect to a Hyper-V VM and go straight into full screen mode without having to do the keystroke sequence (my laptop and tablet don't have one of those keys anyway) or using the menu bar.

This should be pretty easy to add.   :-)

Thanks!

How can you get Hyper-V to send the correct scancode for alt-gr to a Linux Guest running under Hyper-V?

Found http://support.microsoft.com/kb/963709 but thats only for 2008 not 2008R2.

Runing linux without | is no fun.

Did a quick check on a ESX box and there it works with the same Ubuntu installation disc-

Hyper-V Failover Cluster Pass-Through SCSI 3TB RAW Format on VM (2008R2sp1)

Hello,

I created a Hyper-V failover cluster and attached a 3TB lun to the cluster, with success. Then attached the same lun via SCSI Pass-through disk (article ID:2501763) to a VM client (2008R2sp1-standard). Disks Managemnt shows the 3tb disk presentation on the VM client, however this comes up as a RAW disk and will not format ?

Am i missing something simple here?

Hyper-V machine can't see the DC

Hi there,

I have the following problem. I installed 2(fisical) machines one with W2k8R2 ST and the other W2k8R2 EE, one named pt01 and the other pt02.

On both I instaled HyperV role, added static ip's (10.10.1.201 and 10.10.1.203). On the pt01 I instaled a brand new W2k8R2 ST and added the roles for being a DC, added both fisical machines to the domain, added some changes on the group policy and all seamed ok...

The problem began when I instaled on the pt02 another VM (pt03) also with W2k8R2 ST, I can add it to the domain... no problem... BUT... it does not add any policy's, the group "Domain Admins" is not added to the machine... I created a policy that add's a user to the local Administrator Group and nothing... nothing hapends...

Restated the VM, the fisical machines... I can ping any of them, the DC can see the all the machines, the fisical machines also... but the new vm pt03 can't see anything...

If I try to add to the VM the user I set to be created by the policy it says that it is already there... also the domain admin group... but... no... I can't see them

I instaled another machine (pt04) and same problem... :(

Can someone help me on this?

Thanks

How to crash dump a Guest running Windows 2008

Hi Folks,

I have a Windows 2008 VM running on Hyper-V (RTM) and I like to manually crash dump it.

Normally I would follow  http://support.microsoft.com/kb/928839 but that is for Virtual Server 2005.

Can someone either point me to the right KB or give me instructions on how I can crash my VM ?

thanks & appreciated
Rgds,
Edwin.

Hyper-V Live Migration with 2012 Failing

Hi Gents,

I have 3 Server 2012 datacentre (core) servers running with Hyper-V service installed on each server. I have successfully tested live migrations (without shared storage) between two of the servers but 1 is being stubborn.

Every time I try to do a live migration to this stubborn server, I get all the way to “Finish” on the move wizard then get the following error:-

On the stubborn server I get the following events in the Hyper-V VMMS logs:
Event ID: 2400, The virtual Machine %Name% is not compatible with physical computer %stubbornserver%

As a test I created a Virtual machine on the stubborn server and successfully started it, then I successfully migrated to the second Server 2012 datacentre server. But when I tried to migrate it back to the stubborn server I get the same error messages.

Any got any Ideas or had a similar problem?

VHD and VHDX won't Compact

I also have the same problem.

If I compact a VHD or VHDX the compact runs for one second and ends, and the VM's remain uncompacted.

I am using REFS format on the drive, and the VM's are Windows 7 x86, if that makes any difference.

I have disabled System Restore in VM's, as that was a known problem with 2008 R2.

Can this be reported as a bug in Server 2012 RC.

Hyper-V Extend Disk Issue

Hi

Currently running 2008 R2, Hyper-V VM.  I started with a 200GIG VHD.  I shutdown the VM, used Edit Disk in Hyper-V Manager, add an extra 50GIG.  Ran through the wizard, then restarted the VM.  Went into Disk Management, right clicked the Volume, clicked Extend Volume and added the extra 50GIG.  Disk Management shows that there is 250GIG, but windows is only still seeing 200GIG, I restarted the VM, rescanned the disks, but everything is showing 200GIG instead of 250GIG.  Any Ideas?

Thanks

Mark
