Fault tolerance on Hyper v

$

Hi,

I have installed hyper v and will create 2 VM on that server. I have 5 physical hard disk with 300 GB each. My plan is to create RAID 1 disk for system drive for both the VM and hyper v server, and to create RAID 5 disk for data drive for both the VM. How should I implement the same on my hyper v.

Can I create 2 VHD from the RAID 5 disk and can I assign those VHD to different VM in same hyper v? Also let me know is this type of solution will provide fault tolerance to my data for my both the VMs.

Hyper-V in 2012 has capability to do offload data transfer (ODX). In such work, does it require storage that comply to any standard such as VMM2012 requires SMI-S or not?

Thank you.

Remote Registry Service keeps stopping in VMs created using HYPER-V 2012

Hi,

I have created 8 Virtual Machines using HYPER-V 2012. And I try to install SCOM 2012 SP1 CTP2 in one VM (windows server 2012 RC), it stuck with the error REMOTE REGISTRY SERVICE is not running. Though that service is in automatic start, its not running. I tried manually to start that service, but  few seconds after starting its getting stopped automatically.

Even I checked in all other 7 virtual Machines (fresh windows server 2012 OS), the same problem exists(REMOTE REGISTRY SERVICES KEEPS STOPPING). Please help me............

WmiPrvSE.exe - Very high Memory usage

We have few servers running Windows 2008 R2 on Hyper-V. Sometimes we notice that WMIPrvSE.exe memory usage goes sky high (309,716K) when it should be below 30,000. This is effecting the way we monitor these servers.

I have been struggling to figure this out as to what might be the cause. As soon as I kill the process, issue goes away, but only for a day or two before it comes back.

Already tried installing hotfix, KB981314. This did not help.

Any suggestions as to identify the cause and prevent this from happening?

WS-Management details for Hyper-V

Hi all,

I'm looking at remote monitoring of Hyper-V from a Java based web application(that runs on Linux). I was able to make Remote-WMI calls using the open source component J-interop(http://j-interop.org/). I understand that the same information is available as a WS-Management web service. Where can I find more details on how to use this WS-Man interface? I'm looking for stuff like the WSDL for the web service, URLs etc.

RemoteFX documentation for Windows Server 2012?

Hi,

I am currently running a few virtual machines in my lab with RemoteFX enabled. Now I am looking into improving performance.
Most of the documentation I have found so far is either too general or written for Windows Server 2008. The only good information I have found is on blogs.
Yesterday when the new server 2012 was officially released I really hoped for some new documentation but most of what I could find was more aimed at selling the product than how to actually use it properly.

Is there anywhere I can find good documentation from Microsoft about RemoteFX in Windows Server 2012? Especially when it comes to troubleshooting and performance tuning.

Hyper-V 2012 Virtual Machine Management Service stops for no apparent reason

$

Starting initial testing for migration to Hyper-V 2012 (or is it referred to as v3.0?). Essentially out of the box install of Server 2012 Data Center RTM (Full), with Hyper-V role enabled. The day after the initial setup. I opened the Hyper-V console from a remote computer to start testing and was unable to connect to the Hyper-V Management Service. Logging in to the server directly I see that the Hyper-V Virtual Machine Management services has stopped (Kudos MS for making that so easy to see!). After spending awhile in the event log and finding no reason (I see the service stop but no errors associated with it) I chalk it up to a fluke of the previous days initial install. Next day same thing. Except two other services have also stopped. More event log research but no trail to follow. It’s as if the service is being commanded by something to stop?? The only possible connection I see is ConfigMgr 2012 client activity near the same time frame as the service stopping.

Obviously I can’t move forward with further testing and migration until I sort this out. Sure I can set the services to restart but not the ideal option.

Any ideas? Or is 2012 too new to consider for production? I’ve included a couple of event log entries and a list of the services that get stopped.

Thanks, Ken

Hyper v 2012 failover cluster

I am really getting nowhere with this. I am trying to test the new hyper v server 2012 (the free one) and I cannot for the life of me figure out how to enable the failover cluster feature. I do not even see that otpion in the sconfig like it was in hyper v 2008 r2 sconfig. I found this post which mentions the same thing

http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/winserver8gen/thread/afc12504-520f-410f-9876-110bb00ed626

But I still cannot see hwo to enable the feature.

Thanks,

Thomas

Can I use AzMan to allow a user to only see specific VMs?

$

I am setting up a Windows Server 2008 R2 server with Hyper-V that will have a few sets (5 or 6 VMs each) of VM labs that I would like to separate the access to each set to a specific user or group.  For example, Set A is access only by User1 or Group1 and so on.  Looking through the AzMan for Hyper-V, if I understand the Technet library and some of the blogs , AzMan should be able to do this.  Following the Technet instructions here: http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/dd283076.aspx on configuring Hyper-V for RBAC, leaves some questions as to do I need to do this for each set of VMs, Create Scope, Add Role Defs, Add Task Defs, Add Role Assignments?  And the way the article is written, it's almost reads as if creating a scope, add role defs, add task defs or add role assignments are optional and not mandatory.  Is each step required to setup RBAC for Hyper-V?

Another issue I'm having is with the Scripts listed here: http://blogs.technet.com/b/alipka/archive/2008/07/02/off-topic-things-and-some-hyper-v-goodies-resources-backup-and-azman-scope-scripts.aspx.  When I try to run the GetScope or SetScope scripts, Windows returns an error saying there is Line 10, Char 1 (VMName = Wscript.Arguments(0) ) results in an error of Subscript out of range.  Has something changed or been updated recently where these scripts do not work?  I seem to remember these worked earlier in the year when I was testing AzMan.

Any help would be appreciated as searching just led me in circles.  I would like to know if anyone has setup AzMan and Hyper-V in this way or if it's even possible.  If it is, what are the general steps to getting this working in that manner.

Windows Server 2012 Hyper-V Affinity and Anti-affinity settings

$

I keep seeing mentions of virtual machine affinity and anti-affinity settings for Windows Server 2012 Hyper-V in whitepapers and blog posts but I can't seem to find out how to apply these settings. I'm familiar with the old antiaffinityclassnames method with cluster.exe but can't find a comparable setting in any management tools (Hyper-V Manager, Failover Cluster Manager) or in powershell. Where can I find this setting and the documentation for it?

Snapshot Size Limitation

Dears,

I have VMs that been used daily and when they log off they revert back to snapshots, so the snapshot is being restored on every machine daily, but in every day the snapshot size may increase to a huge size before restoring, but when I connect to the VMs they seem to be in normal condition, it maybe increased 1GB on the C drive but the snapshot size could be 16GB!! is there any way to decrease the snapshots size or even a limitation on its size, I know that it maybe increased to the VHD size maximum, but is there a way to limit this to a less size?

hyperv site failover

I have primary datacenter with 2 hyperv hosts in a cluster connected to a SAN (cluster shared volume). I plan to add 2 more hosts connected to a SAN in the backup site B which is on a different subnet. The idea is that when the primary site fails I want to be able to bring the vms in the backup site online without much data loss. Can someone give me a high level overview of how to achieve this? hyperv 2008 r2.

Hyper-V Manager Update

Is there any form of update for Hyper-V Manager for Win7, to manage 2012 servers?

Who does routing within hyper-v?

Suppose we have one single Windows server with Hyper-v role installed, then we created two VMs with IP from different subenet (say VM1 = 192.168.x.x and VM2 = 10.32.x.x). Both VMs are connecting to a virtual switch. So in this case, how do they communicator with each other if we don't have a router?

Is there a limit on Virtual Networks you can create?

$
0
0

I just got 2 NEW Windows Server 2008-R2 HP Proliant Server with 32GB of memory with 5 Active NIC on each server.  I was able to create easily 3 Virtual Network each on both servers with each VN using its own mapped to dedicated NIC port (no problem here).  When i attempted to create a fourth VN on each server I'm getting a connection problem where it won't successfully to external network. I have one available NIC on each server that I've mapped the VN too and it still won't connect like the previous 3 VN's.  I even attempted to have the VN use a NIC that was successful with the other VN's and still no connection.  I even turn-off the other 3 working VM's to see if there was some maximum amount of VM's that can be running at same time and still no luck..

So getting back to my original question is there a limit on the amount of VN's that can run in a Hyper-VM environment.  Why am I having a problem on the 4th Virtual Network setup.  I thought it was unique to the one server until I logged into 2nd server and the same problem occurred when creating the 4th Virtual Network.

Let me rephrase a little above... I can create the 4th Virtual Network!!!! It's getting the 4th Virtual connection to work with the 4th VM created.  I've successfully created a Windows Server 2003 or Windows Server 2008 VM Environment.  It's when I attempt to have the Lan Connection to communicate with external environment that fails.  The other 3 worked as soon as i assigned either a Dynamic or Static IP address and DNS information.  When i attempt to assign Dynamic or Static IP information there is no successful connection on both servers.  If i use the IP information from the 4th VM environment that failed on any of the successful VNs 1-3 the VN's 1-3 still work okay so my IP information is valid. So somehow the 4th VM is causing me problems when using the 4th VN configuration information.

What am i missing... Probably something trivial where i probably need to increase something to get 4th Virtual Environment to communicate successfully.

Help Please!!!

Can not add a disk to an existing VM in 2012RTM

$

I have a stand alone Hyper-V host with 4TB local disk.

I have created two VMs and they run fine.

I would like to create another fixed disk for one of the VMs.  I am using Hyper-V Manager from a separate Win7 box.

I created one directory for each VM to hold their VHDs...

When I try to create the VHD I select the same location the existing one for that VM is and give it a name and only 200GB

It begins to create the file then stops with error saying very little.. just that it failed..

"The server uncounted an error trying to create the virtual hard disk."

If I look on the OS the file is in fact there.. and being used (so I can't delete it right away)

I have tried to just create a disk outside of the vm settings option... same result.
I have tried the command line from this link...

http://blogs.msdn.com/virtual_pc_guy/archive/2008/09/30/hyper-v-scripting-fixed-vhd-creation.aspx

No MATTER where I try to create a VHD I get invalid path.

I tried to use HV-Mgr to create a HD on C:\  same result..

I am not sure what is going on?
Maybe because I moved vhd files around things are messed up?

When I first built the system one of the first things I did was to create a test VHD file and it worked fine.. I have sinced deleted that file and many of the attempted D:\ drive files I am attempting to create but fails..

Is there a sort of health check for Hyper-V that will allow me to verify the everything is working well?

The VMs start so... yea..

Suggestions?
