Routing/subnet issue when running multiple VM:s on one Hyper-V host

I have set up a two node Hyper-V Failover cluster. Everything works well, except for this strange issue. We currently have two VM:s. One 2008 R2 Exchange 2010 server and one 2008 R2 DC. Each cluster node does unfortunately only have two NIC:s. One NIC on each node is dedicated for iSCSI. The other is used for both the physical machine and the VM:s. If I run both VM:s on the same node, the Exchange server cannot be reached from a different VLAN/subnet. The DC VM can be reached just fine. If I move the virtual DC to the other node, everything works fine.

What could be the causing this?

Thanks in advance.

windows 8 RTM : Getting error 0x80070003, 'Disk access error..path not accessible'

Hi All,

I have just installed my laptop with Win8/RTM and installed the HyperV Services (activated it also in the BIOS)

I have a second machine (Win 2008 R2) that I use for my VMs. I experted 3 VMs and copied them on my new Win8 machine.

So there is no VM installed... but when I try to import my VMs, I get this error. I tried with the 3 VMs, I constantly have this error message.

I  have seen in previous  posts that it could be due to VMs not completly deleted.. but this is a fresh Win8/RTM install so I am confused.

Maybe I am doing something Wrong, but I don't see any event in the event log. Also note that I tried to "translate" in English the error message since I am running Win8 in an other language. For sure the "Ox... " is good.

If you have any advice, that would be fantastic.

Regards.

Hyper-V Replica SAN Aware?

$

Is Hyper-V Replica SAN Aware such that the replication traffic can be done at the SAN level (between 2 SAN devices) instead of at the server level?  This would reduce the burden of compression CPU cycles on the servers as well as remove the 5 minute interval issue that Hyper-V replica has?

Which SAN's support this feature?

Hyper-V - Migration from standalone host/separate LUNs to failover clustering, shared LUN(s)

$

Hi,

I'm in the process of migrating an existing Hyper-V infrastructure, managed with SCVMM, consisting of 3 hosts, each with a dedicated LUN, on the same SAN(Fibre Channel), with a total of 30 production VMs.

My goal is to make all the storage space available to all 3 hosts and then configure clustering on the 3 hosts.

Right now I have some pieces of the puzzle, but I have no idea of where to put them and in what order.

1.I know I have to make all LUNs available to the three hosts. Maybe even merge the 3 LUNs into a single one, if I temporarily migrate the VMs storage to a NAS(already available).

2.If I migrate all VMs to the NAS, mapped with an iscsi target to all 3 hosts, without clustering won't it be risky? Because I see that the files written from a host on that shared LUN, are not imediately available to the other hosts.

3.I have to configure failover lustering on the hosts, but I'm concerned how can this be done, without affecting the availability of the VMs.

All these are well documented on technet, but I really need some warnings and advices first, about the order of the migration steps.

The SAN is an IBM DS3512 FC, each LUN has 3TB, the hosts are IBM X3755 M3 and the NAS is a low cost device, with SATA disks.

Thank you.

Hyper-V snapshots

Folks,

I have a VM that i created a snapshot for a few months back.

Looks like this   -  VM_Name - (29/06/12 16:00:00)

                               => Now

We created the snapshot as we were testing a change, that change was successful and so we now want to remove the "VM_Name - (29/06/12 16:00:00)"

If i right click this and delete, and then power off the VM will it do the merge.

Cheers

Two node cluster and domain controller requirements

Hello all!

I am planning to setup a two node hyper-v cluster.

After reading the Microsoft's Hyper-V Failover Clustering guide I am confused with one part.On my network I don NOT want to utilize Active Directory but as I read on the guide, AD is a requirement for Failover Cluster to be able to function properly. Is that true? Should a simple DNS server like Bind for example or simply modifying hosts file with the correct entries on the nodes do the job?

Thank you

VM is slow with passthrough disk

Hi all,

Windows 2008 enterprise hyper-v quick migration set up among three servers and SAN storage

I just present one passthrough disk   to one VM and the VM is sOOOO slow after I added the pass through disk.

(additional info: the current exisiting VM is created from LUN that hyper-V server can see and add VHD file.
Now, since we can not expand the LUN on the SAN, we need more space and SAN techinition created the another
LUN and then I added the disk as pass through disk as the currently existig VM.)

BTW< no matter which VM I add to, it makes every VM soooooo SLOW.  But, If I created VHD in this pass-through LUN and link it to this existing VM, the VM functions very well.  Is there a issue related to pass-through disk?

Can anyone help me out?

Thank you.

Virtual machine Heartbeat "No Contact" + suddenly stopped functioning

I have a virtual machine that suddenly started crashing every 2 minutes. I have all virtuals backed up, by copying their VHD to a network share. So when this server started crashing i dropped its VHD and pulled in the saved one from the network share.

It was being incredibly slow, not detecting network adapters, and had "Heartbeat No Contact", so i deleted the virtual machine and created a new one, and attached the VHD from the network share. Same problem. Please help.

VMM 2012 is not showing a new CSV in Migrate Storage Wizard

Hi Everyone,

I need your help, I plan to Migrate a VM to a new CSV that I just added to my cluster.

the problem is that VMM 2012 will not list the new CSV in the storage location in the Migrate Storage Wizard.

this happened few times before and I had to do few tricks to get VMM to recognize the new CSV , like creating a new VM on that CSV, or by rebooting VMM machine.

is there any other way to somehow refresh VMM so that it recognize the new CSV ?

Thanks

Configuration-only export

Hi,

I have 2 questions:

1. There are 2 articles describing how to manually register a VM in Hyper-V. It's quite a complex procedure (using mlink and setting the right access rights on various places).
If there is a Product Manager reading this: Why can't MS provide an official (command-line) tool to do this in a supported manner? It would be a desireable thing for a lot of Hyper-V Admins. Please pass this internally to the right person. Thank you.

See:
http://blogs.msdn.com/b/robertvi/archive/2008/12/19/howto-manually-add-a-vm-configuration-to-hyper-v.aspx

2. There is an article describing how to do a configuration only export in Hyper-V. Did any of you get this ever to work? Is there another way that really worked for some of you?

These is the link:

     Hi,
I have several VM's created on a the same partition inside Hyper V NTFS umcompressed, and in the server manager console when I try to run all VM's at once I recieve an error message. How can I run all VM's on the Hyper V at once. I have read the Hyper V 2008, and Window Server 2008 R2, and I did not read where this could not be done. I have also looked indside the Tech ed articles and nothing found.

Guys,

I have two physical machines with Windows 2008 R2 SP1 installed. In both servers have the Hyper-V virtual machines installed with Windows 2008 R2 SP1. My question is;

What I need to know that NLB between two virtual machines on two different servers Hyper-V (2 hosts) work
smoothly. I already I enabled "Enable Mac Address Spoofing" in all NICs of VM's. Tando the network when the NLB.

Can't import VM with physical disk - Hyper-V 3 / WS2012 RTM

$

I've had several VMs running on a Windows Server 2008 R2 host for quite some time. Last week the host OS experienced issues and rather than troubleshoot I thought I'd just install a shiny new copy of Windows Server 2012 and Hyper-V 3.

Installed WS2012 on a blank drive, added Hyper-V with no issues. Old disk connected as a second drive. Ran the import virtual machine wizard and successfully imported (and copied to the new drive) a WS2008R2 VM and a Win7 VM. The wizard detected that my network had changed and let me select the new network, resulting in no issues.

Ran the import wizard on another WS2008R2 VM that had one vhd for boot and also a physical disk mapping...and this is where the problem arises. After browsing for the location of the VHD files the wizard detects that the VM also used a physical disk mapping. The option to choose a replacement physical disk is grayed out, and the option to just remove the physical disk is selected. Continuing on I select the new network and finish the wizard, which results in the error: "Hyper-V encountered an error during the import operation." And the wizard returns to the physical disk step of the wizard.

Anyone encountered this or have suggestions?

To verify that Hyper-V liked my physical disk I created a new VM and attempted to add the physical disk to it - which appeared to work just fine. (The disk is offline to the host of course.)

I could probably create a new VM with no disks, then attach the existing vhd and the existing physical disk, then boot it up and fix things, but I'd really rather avoid that. The import process was so smooth for the VMs with no physical disk mappings..

Suggestions appreciated.

Hyper-v VM backup fails on os windows 2008 R2

Hi,

we are unable to take the backup of VM as its getting failed with the following error

Writer name: 'Microsoft Hyper-V VSS Writer'
Writer Id: {66841cd4-6ded-4f4b-8f17-fd23f8ddc3de}
Writer Instance Id: {80fa4ec0-0ae8-40bc-be45-78d1def280c0}
State: [11] Failed
Last error: Not responding

  • We have tried restarting the hyper-v host but no luck.
  • I am worried to reregister the vss components as its a windows 2008 R2 and not windows 2008. The below link only suggests the vss components register on server 2008 and not on R2.
  • please let me know the steps to reregister the vss components on server 2008 R2.

Thanks

Issue with multiple network cards on hyper-v host

$

i have aHyper v server setup with 2 on board network connections each has a completely different network and domain going to each port <o:p></o:p>

hyper-v is connected to domain1 on network1 via the on board network card with a static ip address which is the network we manage hyper v hosts on<o:p></o:p>

the 2nd port has a network connection to network2 which gives out DHCP address <o:p></o:p>

how do i disable the 2nd network connection so that the hyper-v host cant see the DHCP address given out by network2 (stop the networks bridging) but still allow me to build machines on the host so that these can see the network 2 dhcp address <o:p></o:p>

i have tried using nvspbind to unbind the network card from the host but seems to get rid of network card altogether, and there for the virtual machines on the host don’t seem to get the IP address <o:p></o:p>

I hope this makes sense as i am fairly new to hyper -v so hoping that its fairly easy thing to do all help welcome<o:p></o:p>

Dynamic Disk in Hyper-V

I have tried to use search to find a solution as the good boy i am :-)

I have a nice Hyper-V enviroment running with dynamic disk max. 80 GB and currently at 49 GB. problem is I have a Sharepoint tool that logs and it is hardset to stop logging when the there is less than 1 GB diskspace. Hyper-V does apparently not expand the disk unless it is forced to do so. thereby logging stops. Is there anyway to set a autogrow parameter that triggers Hyper-V to expand the disk when a certain free disk space limit is reached?

Windows server 2008 R2 host (with hyper-V installed) FREEZE when backing up data with DPM 2010 server.

Posted in DPM section to.

Here's my quick overlook of the simple architecture

  • 1 Server DPM 2010 on win 2008 R2
  • 1 Server 2008 R2 with hyper-v installed... 2 virtual machine on it... 1 is SQL server  and the other one is a TServer.

i've read the folowing link but  it`s about KB982210 : "The startup time increases or hangs at the logon “Welcome” screen if you frequently backup Hyper-V virtual machines on a Windows Server 2008 R2 system" and this aint what'S happening. My server FREEZE and stop responding during backup. Have to do a hard reset and that`s aint good cause all virtual machine stop working to.
