Hyper-V Server 2012 Remote COM Security Settings

0

Hi everyone,

I have a Hyper-V Server 2012 standalone box with domain member. I want to change COM Security Settings but how can i do? (like DCOMCNFG > Componenet Services > Computers> My Computer > Properties > COM Security TAB on GUI console)

I tried remote connection from GUI based Management Server to to Hyper-V Server 2012 BOX over DCOMCNFG console butfailed, because required "COM+ Network Access feature in the Application Server role" this method. But as far as not possible "COM+ Network Access feature in the Application Server role" on Hyper-V Server 2012. I receive error event log bellow.

"The activation for CLSID {182C40F0-32E4-11D0-818B-00A0C9231C29} failed because remote activations for COM+ are disabled. To enable this functionality use Server Manager to install the COM+ Network Access feature in the Application Server role."

I want to add Network Services account to COM Security TAB. How can i change COM Security Settings on Hyper-V Server 2012?

no internal connection between 2 VMs

I am using windows 8 hyper-v.

I added an internal virtual switch for hyper-v, assigned IP 192.168.1.100 to it.

Then I created 2 VM, assigned 192.168.1.101 with gateway IP above to one VM, and 192.168.1.102 to another.

VM couldping 192.168.1.100 but for VM I could not ping each other..., no internal connection between 2 VMs

Enabling Replication Fails

We are a vmware shop evaluating Hyper-V 2012 for the first time. I've done quite a few searches on this error, but have not been able to find a solution for this issue we are experiencing. Your help would be greatly appreciated.

We are running Hyper-V 2012 SP1 on two physical hosts with a separate machine running SCVMM and another running AD and DNS

When I use Hyper-V manager to enable replication for one of the vm sessions, I am able to get to the last part of the process, but when I click finish I am getting the following error:

Hyper-V failed to enable replication
Failed to perform the operation, the virtual machine is not in a valid state to perform the operation.
Hyper-V failed to enable replication
for virtual machine 'vmtest1'; Operation Aborted (0x80004004)

The firewalls are disabled via GPOs,

Same error with and without snapshots on the VM

There is no media attached to the vm (CD/DVD set to none)

It does not matter if the vm is running or shut down

SPN's all check out

Using Kerberos on Port 80

Port 80 responds via telnet

The folder structure get's created on the destination (Hyper-V replica folder)

Using local disk

No NIC teaming setup

If you need any additional information just let me know. The replication piece is a critical feature for us to move forward with implementing Hyper-V

More than 8 network adapters for a VM?

Hi,

We are looking to set up a virtual router using Hyper-V (2012) and are wondering if there is some way we can have more than 8 network adapters assigned to a virtual machine?

I know we could use 4 legacy adapters but we need to additional performance offered by the standard network adapters.

Is there some way to increase the number of network adapters available to a VM to more than 8?

Cheers,

Stephen

I have currently 3 VM machines setup in Hyper-V3

a DEV,QA, and PROD Machine

Once i updated the PROD with the latest patches for WS2008R2 the network connection was lost.

The machine can't seem to find the network anymore and the IP adress defaults to 169.xx.xx.xx

How can i solve this.

Hyper-V 3.0 VM stuck in "Stopping" state

We are running Hyper-V on a 2012 server and for the 20nd time in as many months I've logged into a VM and restarted or migrated to another host it but it's stuck in the "stopping" state in Hyper-V 3.0 and doesn't give me any Turn Off, Shutdown, Save, Pause or Reset options.  The only thing I've been able to do is to schedule a time to reboot the Hyper-V server.  Has anyone else experienced this?  Is there any command I can run get the VM  top turn off  w/o having to reboot or restart the Hyper-V service?

Our host environment as below:

HP C7000 Blade Chasis

16x ProLiant BL460c Gen8 Server (Intel(R) Xeon(R) CPU E5-2650 0 @ 2.00GHz (8 Cores) - 256GB Ram)

Blades server have Hp FlexFabric 10Gb 2-port

2x HP VC Flex-10 Enet Module on Chassie

HP VC 8Gb 20-Port FC Module on Chassie

Also We turned off tcp checksum offloading but it didn't work.

We've opened case to HP support but they analyzing our system and didn't find any problem to themself.

Does anybody have any fixes for these problems?

Windows 7 never boots and does an endless loop

Have Server 2012 on a HP ML370 G5.

In hyper-v I have made a few VM's, and all of them work fine minus windows 7.

I create a new Windows 7 VM, install looks t ogo great, the final step is the VM rebooting. When it does this, it goes into an endless loop.

DC1	18570	Critical	Microsoft-Windows-Hyper-V-Worker	Microsoft-Windows-Hyper-V-Worker-Admin	5/5/2013 11:42:10 PM

'Windows7' was faulted because the guest executed an intercepting instruction not supported by Hyper-V instruction emulation.

If the problem persists, contact Product Support.

'Windows7' was reset because an unrecoverable error occurred on a virtual processor that caused a triple fault. If the problem persists, contact Product Support.

Any ideas what might cause this? I believe when I was trying to resolve this issue before, I read it was a power setting. I tried setting it the recommended setting that was told(forget what that is now), and it did not help.

I have a freebsd VM and a windows 8 that load and run with no issues.

How do you connect using RDP to a Windows Hyper-V VM when the host is disconnected form the internet

0

Hi there

I have a Windows 8 Professional machine.  I have successfully created a windows 7 VM on the machine and can connect to the VM using RDP when the host Machine (my laptop) is connected to the internet.  However I can not seem to connect to the host machine when it is disconnected.  I use the VM to work whilst disconnected on a plane (for example).  I can connect using the Hyper-V Connection but the screen resolutions cause scrolling (which ever one I chose).

I have tried adding an internal only Virtual Switch this doesn't seem to help...any ideas?

Thanks

Jason

Hyper-V 2012 multicast traffic using teamed NICs

0
0

I noticed an issue that seems to occur on Hyper-V Server 2012.  My server has 3 NICs teamed as well (not sure if it is relevant).

A VM will send out IPv6 Multicast traffic (WSD or LLMNR) and on the wire I see the source MAC as the MAC of the Hyper-V Host's NIC, NOT the MAC of the VM sending the packet.  However, for unicast, the source MAC is the sending VM's MAC.  Everything seems to work, since the packet's source IPv6 address is that of the Link-Local address of the VM.  So devices respond by sending a NS for the VM's MAC using the correct LL IPv6 address.  However, we have some printers that go to a sleep mode and do not correctly respond (which is another issue not related to this question, but it is how we discovered it).

1. Is this expected behavior (Hyper-V sends IPv6 multicast traffic using the Host's MAC as the source)?

2. Why does Hyper-V send IPv6 multicast traffic using its own MAC as the source and not the VMs, and not do it for Unicast?

I haven't dug too deep to troubleshoot this yet since I would like to know if this is normal behavior.  I can provide more details if needed.

***This concerns IPv6 traffic only for now (haven't confirmed it for IPv4)***

***This does not seem to occur with unicast traffic either (ICMPv6 to a unicast address uses the VM's MAC as the source)***

Thanks!

Determine requirements of guest servers on Hyper-V

I am contemplating the virtualization of two of our physical servers: one ("Svr1") is a domain controller also used as a file server (despite best practices but because of budgetary constraints) and the other ("Svr2") runs a SQL-based database software.

The servers are old (2005) and probably any modern server, if correctly configured, could handle the load of both.

But it's all a matter of correctly configuring the host...

How would you determine the load placed on the future host?

Current operating system is Windows 2003 Server (on both) but we would probably upgrade to Windows 2008 (R2) given W2K3 is more or less obsolete and essentially unsupported. Or perhaps Windows 2012.

"Svr1" handles the current load quite nicely with two 2.8 Ghz processors (separate physical, not dual core) and 4 GB or RAM. Roughly 400 GB disk space total with about 50% still available.

"Svr2" has two 3.0 Ghz processors and 2 GB or RAM. We currently run SQL 2008 on this server and might continue to use SQL 2008 since we have the licenses for it (2008 R2 and above would require purchase of new licenses).

Using "Performance Alerts and Logs" on a third machine, I started monitoring the performance of "Svr1" from 7 AM to 6 PM (7:00 to 18:00) one day. This is one view of the result:

Yes, I should probably continue to monitor some more, since there might be more heavy use another day, but doesn't that look like very low use?

Also, are there other objects that I should monitor when planning a migration to Hyper-V?

How would you translate the results, once obtained, into recommended specs for the server running Hyper-V?

Here is the issue that if VM OS goes corrupt then VM will not switch over automatically so is there any way to move VM automatically once VM Corrupt in OS side or VM Goes off /shutdown mode.

I am using Hypev 2012.

Virtualizing the first Domain Controller with Replica Environment

0

Hi everyone,

I would like to ask one question about to virtualize the first Domain Controller in a replica Scenario. I've seen many post and also I asked a few questions related with this but I think this is a bit different.

I'm going to explain my idea and the problems relationated with this. I want to implement 2 servers Hyper-V with the names: HV2K1201 and HVW2K1202.

And inside of HVW2K1201 create 2 VM's, one with the First Domain Controller(DC1) and the another one with Exchange 2010 (EX2010).

My idea, is to have replicated the 2 VM's of de HVW2K1201 to the another server Hyper-V HVW2K1202. But here is the "problem", in all the documents I've read say the two only ways to implement the replica is with Kerberos (Domain Infraestructure) and certificate. Then, If i want to implement it with the Domain Infraestructure I can see that I can not have the first DC (DC1) in a virtual machine, right? Because then, the server HVW2K1201 can not be in a domain environment, then can not create the replica...

If you have doubts, you can see the attached file of my desired schema.

Thanks to all for your help.

Looking for a Hypver-V differential backup software in VHD level, not file level.

0

Hi,

we are currently using Symantec Backup Exec to do file level backup on Hyper-v guests. but we would like to do an additional backup in VHD level. so we can easily revert back to previous periods. it's kind of like the snapshot, but I would like it to be differential not incremental. the idea is performing a full VHD backup during weekend and differential backup during weekdays.  Then another full VHD backup on another weekend, so we have enough time to backup all the guests overnight and don't waste too much storage space since a full VHD file is huge and takes couple hours to backup.

Anyone know if there is any software like that ?

Hyper-V Server, Hyper-V role, Server Core???

Looks like there are a number of choices for using Hyper-V.

According to one survey, most people use the GUI:

http://greatbighypervsurvey.com/

Aidan Finn seems to recommend the GUI:

http://www.minasi.com/forum/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=39466

It probably does facilitate troubleshooting - unless you are very handy at the command line.

Does anyone else have opinions on this?

I suppose that, if you want to virtualize 2-3 servers that may not be very demanding (trying to determine that now), and if you have a host server with 32 GB... does it really matter if the host uses 2-3 GB?

Copy or share a folder from Hyper-V Virtual machine to the host

This can not be as complicated as it seems.

I would like to copy/share a folder from inside the virtual environment to the host computer.

I have setup a shared folder on both environments, but I can't seem to access the data from the host machine.

Outcome:

I would love to create data in the virtual environment and take the data with me on a flash drive, any suggestions would help

Thank you,

2012 Pros and Cons of Joining Core to domain

0
0
If I only have one server virtualizing my DC or even 2 servers virtualizing my dc I am worried about joining my core to the domain.  With 1 server it is a no brainer as the server would not be able to authenticate without a DC available.  What are the cons of not joining the Hyper-V core machine to the domain other than the need to setup separate access credentials inside the core Users for management and specific firewall rules.  I will be managing these servers remotely.  I could join one and not the other in case of power failure or just not join either if I have 2 physical machines. Best Practice?  Thanks!

Hyper-V 2012 management

I have installed Hyper-V 2012 server free on a server.

I attach a Windows 8 pc on the switch (nothing else on the switch)

On Windows 8 I execute Hyper-v management console and I see just my pc and its impossible to connect the Hyper-v server to manage it.
