windows 2012 vm template

$

Hi,

I need to prepare windows 2012 vm template. I am going to run command:

Sysprep /generalize /oobe /mode:vm

VM mode generalizes a VHD that you deploy as a VHD on the same virtual machine or hypervisor.  Will I be able to use prepared hardware on another hyper-v server?

thanks

Hyper-V 2008 R2, delete snapshot files.

Hi.

We have a main fileserver placed in a 2008 R2 Hyper-V Host. The datadisk is 1,6 TB. Currently i see the free disk space is beeing eaten up. When i browse to the .vhd storage area i see a 327 GB .avhd file. And clearly it is Snapshot running under the. This was my first Hyper-V installation, and i might have crated a snapshot of it after initial installation. We are running in a production environment, so i see now that snapshot is not recommended..

Free diskspace is now about 60 GB (and declining). I need to remove the snapshot file to be able to add storage to the original vhd.

From other forums pages, I have seen that exporting the VM and export it again might solve the issue, but with those kind of disks it is not my first aproach.

My question is: Can I shutdown the VM, delete the snapshot file (from Hyper-V manager), restart the VM and case is closed? Would free space be an issue, or is this issue only for 2008 edition? If a snapshot is deleted, would the VM stop to generate snapshotfiles when i start it again?

Sync AD machine password across snapshots?

I have the following vm tree in HyperV 2008:

Win 2008 Base Image (Member of domain)

SnapShot1

SnapShot2

SnapShot3

At some point while using Image3, the AD machine password auto updated rendering SnapShot1, SnapShot2, and base image unable to authenticate against AD.  Is there a good way to re-sync the AD machine password across base image and snapshots?

Place guest machines on server itself or on SAN?

I've been told that, what you want to do in order to obtain the full benefit of virtualization, is setup a SAN infrastructure and place your virtual machines on the SAN. If you have a second Hyper-V host, you can move the virtual machines between the hosts as needed, which allows advantages like failover and high availability.

Well...

What about a 'small shop' that wants to benefit from "some" of the advantages of virtualization (consolidate 2-3 servers into "one" and save on some of the hardware and associated costs - warranty upgrades, UPS units, etc.)?

Is it supported, allowable, best practice... to simply mount your virtual machines on the host server itself.

In production?

Yes, I know you can in practice, which is something I've done myself.

Snapshot applied / "The trust relationship between this workstation and the primary domain failed"

I applied a newer snapshot in the snapshot tree for one of our Win2008 vms.  After applying the snapshot, I now get this error upon trying to login into the VM console:

"The trust relationship between this workstation and the primary domain failed."

Note, the machine was already in the domain in the old and new snapshots so not sure why it has AD problems after applying the snapshot.  Please advise.

Multi-Homed Virtual Server

My Hyper-V subnet is spanned across a 10mb point to point and the gateway is located on the far side.  I am backing it up with DPM that has an iSCSI SAN attached for storage but on a local LAN on the near side of the point to point.  The traffic is going back and forth across the WAN and all the backups are failing.  Is there anyway to attach a second NIC card to each of the virtual servers so that the traffic can stay local to the DPM? Is this the right approach to solving this?

"The remote session was disconnected because there were network problems during the licensing protocol" (After Installing RemoteFX/cannot get RemoteFX to work on VM Win8)

Hi Guys

I am having similar probblems like a few others here (seen simliar posts; bu no results, so I post this again):

My setup:

Dell T7600: 2 x Intel E5-2670 2,89 Ghz  64GB ram  4x 256GB ssd

NVidia Geforce GTX580

Windows Server 2012 Standard running Hyper-V and Remote Desktop Virtualization Agent

2 VMs: Win8 Enterprise and Win7 Enterprise

Problem:

After enabling RemoteFX on the 2 VMs I briefly (through Hyper-V manager interface) got the message that Remote Desktop/RemoteFX was now handling the connection. I anticipated to be able to use RDP from a physical pc (either win 7 enterprise with RDP8 add on or win 2012 server), but all I  get is this error:

"The remote session was disconnected because there were network problems during the licensing protocol"

I tried to connect from Win8, win7 (+rdp8 add on) and server 2012... but still same message....

If I remove Remote FX from thew VM, I can connect fine via RDP from any physical or virtual pc.

any idea what is going on?

Confused on how configure Hyper-V with 2 nics for a disjointed network communication.

OK, here goes. I have a client who had a Windows 2003 server that crashed due to major hardware issues. It is a Doctors office with patient records dating back 15 years. We tried to remove the databases and move them to another server and kept running into corruption errors. We worked with the manufacturer of the software but got nowhere as the application was sold to IBM in '07 and there is no support options left. We made a VHD of the OS and put it on a Windows 2008R2 w/Hyper-V server. We demoted the OS and joined it to the new 2008 servers domain. Everything was working fine for the initial tests for access to the data. The next step was to get connectivity from the workstations to the VM OS for the application, again all worked well. The sticking point right now is that I have the VM (W2K3) configured so that everyone has access to the "old server" for the legacy software, but cannot figure out how to configure access for the 2nd nic which connects directly to the Xray machine. The hierarchy I have in mind is this:

Nic one is an  Intel 82574L. It is configured with a 192.168.21.20 IP

Nic2 is a Intel 82579LM with an IP of 10.0.0.1 (the vm nic has 10.0.0.2)

This is the way the old server was connected. The first network card for the internal network and the second nic configured for 10.0.0.1 connected to the Xray machine.

This is my f1rst attempt into the virtual arena and I am getting confused as to the proper way to configure this. After playing around with the network connections naming I have attempted to name the connections for their purpose.

In the Virtual Network Manager I have 3 listings:

1: Scanner Network Connection. It is set up as external on the 82579LM card (Nic2) Allow management checked.

2: W2K3VM Connection is on the 82574L (Nic1) also as external with All management checked

3: Local area connection set for internal only. I am assuming that it was there upon installing the Hyper-V.

Within the VM I can click on the lan connection which I named "domain name" connection it shows the proper IP address 192.168.21.21.

When I try and enable the 2nd virtual nic it has an IP of 10.0.0.2 along with the proper subnet for connection to the Xray machine. The only problem is it does not connect and the connection with the workstations on the lan is interrupted.

Upon trying to connect the second nic on the host server It says there is connectivity. With the vm it shows it is also connected but the cannot access the xray machine and the workstations have no access. It is hopefully something simple that I just do not see. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

It now seems that the AD DNS which worked fine before enabling the second nic had malfunctioned. The host OS DNS gives an error now that says: The server scan could not be contacted ther error was: A security package specific error occurred.

They are using Symantec End Point Protection 12.1.2 and I have set up (as a test) rule to allow all traffic both ways for IP and UDP traffic.

I have looked at so many posts I am lost for a solution.

Sorry for the convoluted post. Thanks for the help!

Snapshot filling up drive space, cannot merge...

Hi there,

We have a Server 2012 Hyper-V instance that took a snapshot randomly and it does not show up in Hyper-V Management Console now.  The problem is the VHD's original size was 2TB and now this avhd is 525GB and filling up the drive.  When we try to do anything it tells us a merge is in progress and will not let us proceed further.  I need to figure out how to merge the single avhdx to the beginning vhdx so I can make one single VHD and not have this problem.

Access Device Manager in Hyper-V 2012

When I try accessing Hyper-V Server 2012's Device Manager via MMC I get "Make Sure that this computer is on the network, has remote administration enabled, and is running the "Plug and Play" and "Remote registry" services.

The Error Was: "The machine selected for remote communication is not available at this time.

I disabled the Hyper-V Firewall and followed the steps outlined here for "Allow remote access to the Plug and Play interface":
http://mikefrobbins.com/2010/12/02/enabling-remote-access-to-device-manager-on-server-core/

Any ideas?

The Hyper-V Manager works as-well-as the Policy Editor, just not Device Manager.

Windows Server 2012 Hyper-V guest OS license?

Hello,

I’m about to install a new Hyper-V environment.

If I have 3 psychical hosts, I will buy3 WS 2012 std. Which will give me:

  • 6 Virtualizations rights
  • 6 WS 2012 OS (free) licenses

Now, I would like some more VM's in this environment, so... if I buy1 WS 2012 std. license, it will give me 2 Virtualizations rights! But can I also install the WS 2012 OS for (free) on those 2? or at least 1 of them??

Thanks :)

VM as template after creating snapshot

$

Hi,

We use windows 2012 hyper-v. I want to have on VM with windows 2012 standard as template vm. If I will take snapshot before running sysprep will I be able to use that vm for other deployments. Snapshot will create another vhd file so to use this VM after snapshoting and syspreping will be complicated? Could it be an option as to export that vm as template and import with another name?

thanks

Is there such a thing as Snapshot mode or something similar?

$

So I inherited some virtual machines which I'm currently learning about. I was told that one of them is running in snapshot mode. However, I have not been able to find anything stating that Hyper-V has a "snapshot mode". This particular VM isn't operating like the others so it does seem it is setup different. Again, however I haven't figured out how. So is there a snapshot mode or some mode similar?

Thank you for your time and assistance.

Mystery AVHD file and no snapshots lists in Hyper-v

Need some serious help here.

I was the victim of the runaway shapshot eating all the availble disk space last year - that was a fun 30 hours to fix.  I still hold the record of having a 400GB snapshot.  Snapshot are evil in production - never to be used again.

Anyway...

I have one virtualized exchange server and in Hyper-V mangare, there is no snapshots listed (this is good, since it is an Exchange server and it is in production).

But, we are running out of diskpace again.  I check the drive and there is a 151GB snapshot (which is active and being used by the Exchange server).  A AVHD file - your basic snapshot differential file.

So, it looks like this blight of snapshots is not completely gone.  How do I get rid of this snapshot?

I would like some suggestions before I start working on a production system.

Can't RDP to Virtual Machine from Host

I am new to the Hyper-V world and have come across a roadblock. I have Server 2008 SP1 with current updates installed and have added the following roles:

Hyper-V, Network Policy and Access Services, Terminal Services and Web Server (IIS)

My host machine, Server 2008, has a static IP assigined. My virtual machine is getting it's IP from the DSL modem that I am using and is in a different network (192.168.x.x)

My goal is to have the ability to remote desktop to the virtual machine without interfacing with the server. I would like to be able to do this with username and password authentication.

I have tried every combination of network adaptor on the virtural machine and have not been able to access it via remote desktop from my host machine.

Is what I'm trying to do even possible with out assigning a static IP to the virtual machine?

Thank you in advance for any help.

VM will not configure. Using Disk2VHD VHD for VM

Hello -

I'm testing a Win 2008 non-domain, stand-alone server vm conversion using DISK2VHD. I want to store the images and VHDs on a NTFS storage array share using UNC paths. Hyper-V (Win 2008 R2) host was assigned permissions as a computer to the shares - full control. VHD is created but I get the following error in Hyper-V Mgr when trying to create the VM using the DISK2VHD VHD. Ideas on what I'm missing? Thanks in advance!

Testing with Hyper-V

$

Hi,

We would like to do some testing with Server 2012 and Hyper-V on a new server.
(software is from an MSDN subscription)

- Are there limitations when using the MSDN version of Server 2012 compared with the licensed version (number of users, numbers of VM's, something else)?
- If I want to use more than 2 VM's, should I use the Standard or the Database version of Server 2012?

- If testing is finished, can I just buy some licenses and keep using the software or should I reinstall everything?

- If the server is the only physical server computer in the network, can I use the free Server 2012 with Hyper-V as the host OS and install Server 2012 as a VM and a DC or should there always be a physical DC in the network? If so, can the server be the DC and the host for all the VM's?

Thanks in advance....
