Connection Manager opening minimized

Hello,

For some reason when connecting to a VM via Hyper-V Manager it will open in a very small window (as below) - I've tried maximizing and clicking and dragging the window but neither work. Changing the resolution within Windows resolves the problem.

Live Migration Fails at 14%

Afternoon

****Background Info ******

We have currently carried out an upgrade on our Left Hand P4000 SAN. We updated the HyperV Host Servers and SAN using SPP 2013.020.2013. After we carried out the initial upgrade we realise that the Failover Cluster manager was unable to Communicate with the Witness or the Cluster Shared Volumes.

We logged a call with both HP (SAN Providers) and Microsoft Premier Support. After a lengthy discussion with both parties we came to the realisation that the issue was being caused by the DSM for MPIO. On Microsoft recommendations we removed the HP DSM for MPIO software from the 4 SAN Nodes, after removing the software from the First Node we noticed an immediate improvement as we were able to talk to certain Shared Volumes and the Witness. Once the Software had been removed from all Nodes are SAN appeared to be fully functional.

At this Stage both Microsoft & HP recommended that we install the latest version of HP DSM. So we installed “HP StoreVirtual DSM for MPIO Installer AT004 10503” this brought it upto version 10.0.0.1486.1. The San appeared to remain stable, we were able to talk to the Witness, all CSV’s and we spot checked Live Migrate, Quick Migrate and Move VM to another Node. All appeared to work at this point.

***** Issue*****

The following day we carried out a full health check to confirm that all servers could migrate using all 3 methods. During our testing we discover several of the VM’s were unable to migrate from a particular Node2. We were able to migrate VM’s onto this node but not off it. Several other VM also seemed to have issues migrating onto other Nodes.

The VM’s affected have multiple OS, live in different CSV’s and are managed by different Nodes. Although these VM’s are unable to Live Migrate the majority of them will quick migrate or can be moved to another node.

*****Testing******

During are testing we have tried several tests to see if we can stop the potential issue. None of which has caused any difference when live migrating

  1. Restarted the HyperV Host Server
  2. Re installing the virtual quest services
  3. Remove the network connection from the VM
  4. Remove the Virtual Network Adapter
  5. Readded the Virtual Adapter (Synethic Adapter)
  6. Re created the Live Migration Team

Questions

  1. Has anyone else come across these issues after applying latest SPP version
  2. Is there any best practice methods for troubleshooting this issue
  3. Which is the best DSM for MPIO for a Left Hand P4000 SAN
  4. We are thinking of reverting back to the Microsoft DSM for MPIO, is this likely to cause any additional issues?
  5. What is the best way to revert back to the Microsoft DSM for MPIO (one Host Server at a time, or all at the same time?)

At this point it might be relevant to mention that we have set up a HP Team for Live Migration. All Teams have been set identically, same NICs (one onboard nic and one external nic) all set with LACP, same naming conventions. We have noticed that when we try to migrate from Node2 the Network Migration Team traffic fluctuates between 0.1% & 0.3% of the Nic Capability, while on other Host Servers it transfers at 35-40%.

Clipboard from VMC to host

Hi, i use very often Hyper-v (2008 r2 or 2012). But for more comfort i use VMC.
I need paste some command to PowerShell or CMD. If i working via RDP conection i can use clipboard.
Is it possible configure clipboard for VMC ?
VMC have Clipdoard, but when i press Ctrl + V - nothing happens. I can paste clipboard using my mouse.
But i want use Quick Edit on PowerShell or CMD. Just right click.

Paste, it is not general task. Maybe i'll used to copy via "Type clipboard text".
I need copy clipboard from VMC to my PC, but i can copy only full screen of VMC.

Hyper-V 2012 and IPv6 Multicast Traffic

I noticed an issue that seems to occur on Hyper-V Server 2012.  My server has 3 NICs teamed as well (not sure if it is relevant).

A VM will send out IPv6 Multicast traffic (WSD or LLMNR) and on the wire I see the source MAC as the MAC of the Hyper-V Host's NIC, NOT the MAC of the VM sending the packet.  However, for unicast, the source MAC is the sending VM's MAC.  Everything seems to work, since the packet's source IPv6 address is that of the Link-Local address of the VM.  So devices respond by sending a NS for the VM's MAC using the correct LL IPv6 address.  However, we have some printers that go to a sleep mode and do not correctly respond (which is another issue not related to this question, but it is how we discovered it).

1. Is this expected behavior (Hyper-V sends IPv6 multicast traffic using the Host's MAC as the source)?

2. Why does Hyper-V send IPv6 multicast traffic using its own MAC as the source and not the VMs, and not do it for Unicast?

I haven't dug too deep to troubleshoot this yet since I would like to know if this is normal behavior.  I can provide more details if needed.

***This concerns IPv6 traffic only for now (haven't confirmed it for IPv4)***

***This does not seem to occur with unicast traffic either (ICMPv6 to a unicast address uses the VM's MAC as the source)***

Thanks!

Multiple Replication

I'm using Windows 2012 Hyper-V and enabled replication of a virtual machine. Which works great.

Is it possible to replicate this specific VM to a 2nd server? IE have multiple replications running of a specific VM.

Hosted Hyper V Server

Hi,

I have a Hosted Hyper V 2012 Server that I can access the Core server via remote Desktop buy I can not get the Hyper V Manger to work correctly,

I have a 2008 R2 server also hosted buy with no direct access to the Hyper V server only via the internet no local network, and local windows 7 PC that I have tried to connect the server.

the Windows 2008 R2 server just says Cannot connect to RPC Service.

the Windows 7 system seems to connect but errors at the point of setting up the virtual disk and even though I have added a VM with powershell it does not show up in the Hyper V Manager.

my first question is given that I do not local network access to this box should I be able to access and setup VM via the Internet?

We have single dual port HBAs in our hosts.. each port goes to a sep SAN controller.. but I am curious how a Server 2012 Hyper-V host handles VMs if the HBA itself was to fail?

Hyper-V to USB Flash Performance, RAM, and Storage?

I'm coming from an vmware esxi environment where I always usb boot the OS because esxi loads into RAM. my questions are the following with hyper-v

1. If I usb boot hyper-v 2012 core will it load entirely into RAM and run? My plan is to just create and run all my VM's on the local disks of the system so the hyper-v USB flash is nevery being touched with vm's.

thanks for the advice

[FAQ] How to connect a VM to the network

$

I know this is FAQ... and I have search a lot and also taken some steps but my VM is not connecting to the internet.

I am on windows 8 pro laptop with 1 WiFI connection to the network which is working (I am posting this using the same connection)

1. I Installed Ubuntu 13 VM by downloading and ISO from the web.

2. then I went into hyperv manager and created a virtual switch. this is external switch and allows management operating system to share network.

3. Now when I go into my VM settings, under network, I can see this switch. when I select it and reboot my VM. It still does not connect to the internet.

I searched on web and found a very lengthy article which suggested that I should bridge the connection created by the switch and wifi., I did that but still no network inside VM.

Again, sorry if this is totally obvious... but even after searching I am not able to find any article which solves my problem.

Again, I have only 1 Wifi connection.

Hi.

I'm having trouble while trying to import a Virtual Machine that I have exported before.

Our server was a Windows Server 2008 R2 with Hyper-V. Now, we upgraded it to Windows Server 2012 Standard, installed the Hyper-V and when I try to import, the message below is shown.

How can I fix it? Did I lose all my VMs ?

Thanks!

RSS in converged network scenario

$

If we have a converged network with two teamed pNICs in LBFO on windows server 2012 Hyper-V node, Teamed adapter is assigned in vSwitch used for tenant, management, live migration, cluster and storage networks, can we enable RSS on the pNICs to leverage CPU performance for the Storage network or everything attached on the vSwitch can only leverage from the DVMQ?

I guess that everything attached to vSwitch is considered as vNIC and the answer is that DVMQ must be used instead of RSS to receive some additional performance and system offloading but I prefer to have your opinion.

iSCSI in converged network scenario

If we have a converged network with two teamed pNICs in LBFO on windows server 2012 Hyper-V node, Teamed adapter is assigned in vSwitch used for tenant, management, live migration, cluster and two iSCSI networks do we need MPIO?

LBFO in Hyper-V mode assigns iSCSI vNIC stream to a single physical adapter and its bandwidth only. If we have two iSCSI vNICs attached to the vSwitch how can be sure that the iSCSI vNICs is assigned to a different pNICs and to leverage of MPIO? What if we are using Hash mode of LBFO where the IP and port is the same and MAC is only different?

Thank You

Network Configuration for virtualized Servers

Hi everybody

I am new to virtualization and I am trying to implement 4 virtual servers on a single physical server.

The physical server is

Xeon QuadCore-1.9Ghz/24GB/600GBx5( raid5)/1xNIC

I have made new virtual machines 4 each. I want one of them to be ADDS Server. Other three are application servers.

The NIC on the physical (host)server has only Hyper-V Extensible virtual switch protocol on it. There is one more virtual adaptor created on base machine. This has IP address of 192.168.0.233/255.255.255.0. Gateway is my internet router 192.168.0.1. DNS servers IP addreses as given by my ISP.

The first VM-1 would be a ADDS /DNS server. The IP address for this virtual NIC is 192.168.0.234/255.255.255.0

The second VM-2 would be my accounting server. The IP address for this virtual NIC is 192.168.0.235/255.255.255.0

The third VM-3 would be my Invoicing application server. The IP address for this virtual NIC is 192.168.0.236/255.255.255.0

The fourth VM-4 would be my Terminal Services Licensing Server. I will be connecting about 40 Thin Clients on this server. The IP address for this virtual NIC is 192.168.0.237/255.255.255.0

The problem is :

1. I do not get access to internet through any of the VMs. I have tried putting router IP address as gateway address and IP address of my ADDS server also. Also none of my Thin Clients are able to connect to Terminal Services Server.

But I am able to ping the internet router from any of the VMs. PLs suggest proper Gateway and DNS server addresses. Would it be advisable to have separate NICs for each of the servers? There wont be more than 15 users active at a time and hence I have put only one NIC in the server.

Virtual Servers on Hyper-V Server 2008 r2

hello everyone,

I know it's an old problem and based on all the posts I found on the forum, it doesn't seem to be easy to be resolved.

the situation is that we run software on virtual servers and this software is a single thread type of application. it would run a single process on a single vCPU and maxis out, and as of now the developers of the application don't have any plans to make the software take advantage of all of the available CPUs.

I tried with the weight and relativity but it does not seem to help. so I thought to myself, what if there's a software out there that you can install on the VM and it would actually create a single virtual CPU that runs on top of all the available CPUs, so that when an application with a single thread like that one I am dealing with uses this virtual CPU, it would actually be using all the available CPUs without even knowing.

it might sound like a crazy thought I know but I already found some free ones that could actually do that, such as:

http://sourceforge.net/projects/unen/

http://sourceforge.net/projects/vcpu-64bit/

however the company I work for would not allow shareware or any free software for security reasons, so I am looking for something similar that's not free and comes with support and what have you.

any ideas?

any help or comments are much appreciated.

How to add passthrough disk in Windows 2012 hyper-v cluster?

$

I'm having problems with passthrough disks in a Windows 2012 Hyper-V cluster. 2 nodes both are Windows 2012 datacenter. I can add the disk into the cluster no problem. Run validation and everything is ok. If the disk owner is node1, I can add the disk into a virtual machine that is on node2. I get an access denied error when I try to add the disk into a virtual machine on node1. if I move the disk owner to node 2, then I can add disk into virtual machines on node1 but same error on node2.

I tried to search an official article on how to add a passthrough disk in Windows 2012 hyper-v cluster but it seems there is none. All the links are about how to do it in Windows 2008 R2. Anyone know where could be wrong?

The passthrough disk is via iSCSI. I added the disk to the 2 nodes first, make it online, initialize it, then make it offline, then add it into the cluster.

 Detailed error is like this:

Hyper-V virtual machine management service account does not have permission to open attachment (followed by the disk path). error: general access denied error(0x80070005)

Hi,

I am looking for a list of virtualized NICs in Hyper-V and which drivers I will need.

Which NICs virtualized in Hyper-v for Guests OSs?

i will be glad to get a link to a refrence of virtualized hardware list in Hyper-v.

BTW, does Hyper-V has support for paravirtualized guests?

Thanks,
