I am using Windows 10 Pro (build 19041) with the latest updates. Since I updated to the latest build, I tried to make some changes to an existent VM and as soon as I try to change the settings, I get an error window (snapshot included in this post). I noticed that there is an issue with an extension too, not sure if this is related or not. I cant attache the snapshot :-/ .Here are the additional details included as part of this error:

Windows Server 2019 Hyper-V Failover Cluster Intermittent VM Connectivity - VMQ disabled

$

Hello!

I have a new Windows Server 2019 Hyper-V Failover Cluster where some of the VM's have periodic connectivity loss.  I can ping them fine from the Hyper-V host server where they are running, but get intermittent pings from other hosts on the network.

I have a pair of HPE 10/25Gbe 631SFP28 NIC's teamed (Switch Independent) with the Hyper-V Virtual Switch built on that Team.  I believe that I have the latest Windows Drivers (Broadcom 10/23/2018 214.0.177.0).  I installed the latest HPE firmware for these Adapters.

VMQ is disabled on the Teamed Adapter and two 10/25GB NIC Adapters on both hosts.

The hosts are up-to-date with Windows Updates.

Yet I can get 50% packet loss with a simple ping to these VM's.  From some hosts, I can't get any pings to work at all.  Yet the correct MAC address shows up in "arp -a".

There is no routing and no VLAN's between the Hyper-V Hosts, VM's, and PC's.

Some VM's appear to have rock solid connectivity, while other (it seems like newly created VM's?) have the connectivity loss.  I can live migrate the VM's between hosts and still have ping loss.  I admit that the "newly created VM's" idea seems strange, but that's what it seems like.  The VM's are using the Hyper-V Synthetic NIC and running patched Windows Server 2019.

Any ideas on what I can try?  I would certainly appreciate any help that anyone can offer!

Dave

Setting up graceful shutdown during power loss

Server 2016 host running server 2012r2, 2016 virtual machines in Hyper-V.

I currently have an Exchange 2016, DC, SharePoint, CA VM's in Hyper-V

I am using APC brand UPS's and they offer a software called PowerChute. Does anyone have any experience with this software and server 2016?

Does anyone have any experience connecting a Hyper-V host to a UPS and the best practices to get the VM's to shut down gracefully and then the host during a power loss?

My UPS's have a run time of about 20 minutes.

Thanks!

Shared VHDX or VHD SET move between machines

Hello,

I was trying to move a couple of shared VHDX disks from one machine to another and they came up as RAW. I converted the shared VHDX to VHD SET but is the same. I am wondering why this happen. I spent several hours looking at this and cannot find an explanation for it.

This is on Hyper-V 2016. The source and destination virtual machines are in different clusters.

Thanks,

Simion

Hello

I have a host server running 2 VMs which do not auto start on reboot of host.

Host has 64GB RAM and the VMs have 16GB RAM each.

All VMs have integration services enabled.

Started delay - 0

Set to save state on shutdown of host

Auto start if it was already on.

Event log shows this:

An error occurred while performing server startup action for virtual machine.

I can restart the VMs with no problem its only when the host is rebooted.

vmconnect.config use 2 monitors instead of all 3 like

Hi all,

I've been searching all night and haven't found anything yet. So I'll post my question here.

I work with a VM which has my company VPN Client installed from where go log in into my Office Computer.

Since the VPN Client has no split tunneling enabled (company Policy) I can't use any other network resource except for the company resources.

Since I still need my S4B locally, because Audio is also restricted, I need to start my S4B Client locally, so far so good everything works. But what annoys me so much is that I need to minimize my vmconnect session all the time i need to use the local S4b Client.

That's when I tried to configure the vm connect client to use only 2 Monitors instead of all 3.
This would be possible if the connection is an RDP Connection.
MSTSC Config for that:

use multimon:i:1
selectedmonitors:s:1,2

I can't find any reference for the vmconnect.config files that are stored in C:\Users\user\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Windows\Hyper-V\Client\1.0

Can you help me if that?

Or even better do you know the config option for multimonitor for vmconnect?

Mycurrent vmconnect rdp file:

<?xml version="1.0" encoding="utf-8"?>
<configuration>
    <Microsoft.Virtualization.Client.RdpOptions>
        <setting name="AudioCaptureRedirectionMode" type="System.Boolean">
            <value>False</value>
        </setting>
        <setting name="FullScreen" type="System.Boolean">
            <value>True</value>
        </setting>
        <setting name="SavedConfigExists" type="System.Boolean">
            <value>True</value>
        </setting>
        <setting name="UseAllMonitors" type="System.Boolean">
            <value>True</value>
        </setting>
        <setting name="AudioPlaybackRedirectionMode" type="Microsoft.Virtualization.Client.RdpOptions+AudioPlaybackRedirectionType">
            <value>AUDIO_MODE_REDIRECT</value>
        </setting>
        <setting name="PrinterRedirection" type="System.Boolean">
            <value>False</value>
        </setting>
        <setting name="RedirectedDrives" type="System.String">
            <value />
        </setting>
        <setting name="VmName" type="System.String">
            <value>W10-Work</value>
        </setting>
        <setting name="SaveButtonChecked" type="System.Boolean">
            <value>True</value>
        </setting>
    </Microsoft.Virtualization.Client.RdpOptions>
</configuration>

Or can I create a connection to the hyper-v console with mstsc?

If you can help me with that you would be my hero :)

Best,
Kim

Converting physical server to Hyper-V VM

$

I have a 2012r2 DC that has a SQL express database that is being used by other software on the server. DHCP, DNS, printer shares, network folders. (I know, more than just DC on DC isn't recommended)

The physical server hardware is having issues and might be possible to have it running as a Hyper-V VM on another box.

Will there be any difficulties with it being a DC or any of the above to have it converted to a hyper-V virtual machine on a server 2016 host?

What is the best method to do this?

I have Backup exec, made by Veritas, that has this feature or is there a Microsoft equivalent that would be more reliable?

I see mention of a Disk2Vhd utility but not sure if that's Microsoft or another 3ed party. I would prefer to keep the method to either be from Microsoft or Veritas.

Will the methods I mentioned or another that is proposed wipe out the source server or will it be left intact just in case?

Thanks

Hyper-V Manager Hangs on "Loading Virtual Machines"

$

We have a Windows Server Hyper-V cluster and frequently when trying to use Hyper-V manager to do specific tasks that can't be done through Failover Cluster Manager directly, we find this problem.  Hyper-V manager connects to the relevant cluster node (HV server), but sticks for a very long time on 'loading virtual machines'.  It will eventually populate the list of server VMs, but it can take areally long time - often well in excess of an hour.

When this happens HV cluster operations usually remain largely unaffected but sometimes, such as today, it was severely impacting my ability to migrate VMs.  VMs remain running and stable.

Details

Actions taken:

  • Checked for appropriate AV exclusions.  We're using Windows Defender + ATP with the necessary exclusions.
  • Checked event logs.  I'm still trying to locate logs that would indicate the source of this problem.
  • Updated and restarted all nodes.  We've done this many times as this has been an issue for months.
  • Restarted the VMMS service on affected nodes.  It typically tries to stop and crashes after about 15mins, then Windows starts it again.

Details:

  • Node O/S: Windows Server 2019 Datacenter Edition, v1809.
  • Node hardware: HP ProLiant DL380 G10, 1TB RAM.  RAM utilisation is fairly low with plenty of space capacity.
  • Storage is a number of Cluster Shared Volumes (CSVs) on a Dell EMC Unity 350F SAN.

Hi,

I'm new to HyperV.  I have installed Windows Server 2019 Std on a Dell machine and created a VM of Windows Server 2019 Std and promoted it to PDc.

After doing so I realized that the default install had installed the file serversharing role on both HyperV host and VM.  Is there any reason I needthat role on either host or VM?  And if not can I safely remove it?

Thanks,

Dan

VM Graceful Shutdown & Battery Passthrough

$

Hello all!

I've been working with Hyper-V and some VMs running Server 2016 on a system running Server 2016. That server is then hooked up to a UPS. The main issue we are having is the ungraceful shutdown of our VMs when the server is on UPS power. Trying to find a way to fix that, I came across mention of Battery Passthrough for Hyper V. However, what information I have been able to find regarding that has been scarce and unhelpful. Is battery passthrough enabled by default? If not, how could I enable it? Does it work for Server 2016/2019 VMs?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Hyper-V Performance on single server

Hi all,

I have a HyperV host with the spec below:

- AMD Ryzen 7 with 12 cores

- 2x 1 TB SSD

- 64 GB ram

Any tips on setting this up so it's the most efficient at running multiple VMs?  e.g. Putting VMs on D drive (as opposed to C with Windows) so there is perhaps less disk thrashing?

Thanks for any advice

Hello,

We have a virtual switch setup in the Virtual Switch Manager and the adapter has been deleted by mistake using the "Change Adapter Settings..." of the Network And Sharing Center. Now, obiviously the switch is in a failed state and we just want to remove it from the list.

The Hyper-V console and the PowerShell command ("remove-vmswitch -Name "VSITCH01" - force") both returnsthe error below when removing the switch, because obivously, it can't find the adapter. How do I force remove the switch from the list?
