Hyper-V Failed to Change State Error Code 32788

I have a Hyper-V machine running on a server with 20GB of RAM available (according to resource monitor).  When I try to start it with more than 4GB of RAM it fails with this error.  I tried creating a new VM, using a different VHD file, all create the same error.  Before I updated Hyper-V it used to report insufficient memory.  What am I missing?

Thanks!

Hyper-V 2016 VMs stuck 'Creating checkpoint 9%' while starting backups

$

We have a two clustered W2016 Hyper-V hosts, every couple of days one of the hosts gets stuck when the backup kicks off. In Hyper-V manager the VMs all say 'Creating checkpoint 9%' It's always the same percentage 9%. You can't cancel the operation and the VMMS service refuses to stop, the only way to get out of the mess is to shutdown the VMs, and hard reset the effected node. The backup works for a few days then it all starts again.

The only events I can see on the effected node is:

Event ID: 19060 source: Hyper-V-VMMS

'VMName' failed to perform the 'Creating Checkpoint' operation. The virtual machine is currently performing the following operation: 'Creating Checkpoint'.

Can anybody help please? Cluster validation is clean. Hosts and guests are patched up.

2012 R2 server Hyper-V vm's are automatically shutdown.

2012 R2 server Hyper-V vm's are automatically  shutdown. verified the event logs found below examples.

All the events are failover cluster events. Failover Clustering Events: 21502,1155,1069,1205,1146,1230

Hyper-V 2012 Live migration fails with event ID 21502.

Please someone help me out.

Hi,

IP address is set on Hyper-V host machine. When I try to query it using the following SCVMM command, IPAddress field in the adapters is empty.

 Get-SCHostNetworkAdapter -VMHost $vmRef.VMHost

Has anyone faced this issue earlier? Is there any way to fix this issue?

Thanks,

Partial checkpoint - unable to merge, unable to take new checkpoints

$

Hello,

Our backup team is reporting issues backing up two servers.  When checking the servers I am unable to take new checkpoints from either HyperV manager or SCVMM.  From HyperV manager if I go to settings and change the checkpoint type from Production to Standard I am able to take checkpoints, however the backups are still failing.

I'm fairly certain that the issue is related to the fact that even though the VM does not appear to have a checkpoint if I look at the properties of VM it appears that the first disk does not have a checkpoint while the other two do:

Is there a way to force these checkpoints to merge?

Hyper-V core 2019 and AMD Epyc... Working?

$

I am planning to test install the latest Hyper-V core on a DELL R6415

( 17763.557.190612-0019.rs5_release_svc_refresh_SERVERHYPERCORE_OEM_x64FRE_en-us )

I do notice that there is a known issue mentioned with recent DELL EPYC servers, to wit :

"

To install Windows Server 2016 RTM using the operating system (OS) installation media:
  1. Press F2 during the POST to access System Settings and disable Virtualization Technology in the Processor settings.
  2. Install Windows Server 2016 with the OS installation media.
  3. Apply the latest Update Rollup via Windows Update. Windows Server 2016 RTM requires a hotfix (available on June 2017 Update Rollup and later) for a known AMD IOMMU issue. Deployments after Windows Server version 1709 no longer need this hotfix.
  4. Go to System Settings (F2 during the POST) and enable Virtualization Technology in the Processor settings.

"

Is it safe to assume that this is already fixed in 17763.557.190612-0019.rs5_release ??

Has anybody here successfully  installed Hyper-V2019 on an EPYC server?

TIA!

hyperv slow? or win server 2016 slow?

Hi,

I have a new server : supermicro, 16 cores xeon, 64Gb ram, hardware raid-10 ssd disks, 1Gbps nic's.

On it I installed win server 2016 std: one for AD+DNS, one for exchange, file sharing, small database (sybase) and rdp.

Problems:

* installing win updates is very slow (installing cumulative update 08/2019 (cumulative 07/2019 xas already installed) is running for 1 hour now. Any hint to speed this? No bottleneck found in task manager.

* I work in rdp and often rdp connection is frozen for 10 seconds. However, task manager shows network nearly not used, cpu use <10% on host, other computers work fine (no problem with internet connection), ... Any hint?

* from client side, it seems very fast.

Any hint?

Features on Demand on Hyper-V Server 2019

A Server Core installation of Server 2019 Standard / Datacenter allows 'Features on Demand' to be installed (mmc, event viewer, etc, plus optionalliy IE11). Does anyone know whether it's possible to install the features on the stand-alone (free) Hyper-V Server 2019? I've just tried running the Powershell commands to install them (listed here: https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/windows-server/get-started-19/install-fod-19) - it reports as completed successfully, but the commands don't seem to be available and a search on the C drive for the relevant .exe files doesn't locate anything.

It may well be that, given that Hyper-V Server is free, the features aren't available - but it would be useful to know for sure.

Thanks

David

What is causing this slowness

We have Hyper-V running on a 4 server cluster (using Failover Cluster Manager).   Lately we have had a weird problem where one of the virtual machines will start DRAGGING.

If we move the virtual machine to one of the other cluster hosts, the VM will immediately have improved performance.

Note that it doesn't matter which cluster machine we move the VM to.  In fact, we can move it to another cluster host, then move it back, and the performance remains high.  Which tells me, the problem isNOT with the cluster host.

Suggestions?

Windows Server Backup with Hyper-V

$

I'm trying to use Windows Server Backup on a Windows Server 2019 Standard with Hyper-V, but it gives me errors.

This is the message from Windows Server Backup:
"Backup succeeded but some components backed up were inconsistent in the snapshot. The application this component belongs to might not function properly after this backup is used for recovery."

And this is the message I get in Event Viewer for each VM that is online during the backup:
"VSS writers inside virtual machine '*****' failed to perform BackupComplete to its shadow copy (VSS snapshot) set: A function call was made when the object was in an incorrect state for that function (0x80042301)."

Any suggestion on how to use Windows Server Backup for our Hyper-V VMs?

Tesla V100 - Hyper-V 2019 - device cannot find enough resources (code12) - MMIO config ?

$

Hello,
I have a server HPE Proliant DL380 Gen10, 512GB RAM, with inside a Tesla V100-PCIE-32GB.
Windows Server 2019 is installed.
We have configured the Hyper-V role and installed a VM with 320GB RAM.

What we have done on the host is :
- Disabled the Tesla on the host.
- Set-VM -Name $VMName -AutomaticStopAction TurnOff
- Set-VM -LowMemoryMappedIoSpace 3Gb -VMName $VMName
- Set-VM -HighMemoryMappedIoSpace 33000Mb -VMName $VMName
- $locationPath = "PCIROOT(36)#PCI(0000)#PCI(0000)"
- Dismount-VMHostAssignableDevice -force -LocationPath $locationPath
- Add-VMAssignableDevice -LocationPath $locationPath -VMName $VMName

Unfortunately, each time the VM starts I have this error message in the device manager :
This device cannot find enough free resources that it can use. (Code 12)
If you want to use this device, you will need to disable one of the other devices on this system.

I have tried to change the MMIO to
3GB / 33000MB
2GB / 4GB (found on a blog but for Grid cards)
176Mb / 560Mb -> because the MS script listed the card as :
NVIDIA Tesla V100-PCIE-32GB
Express Endpoint -- more secure.
And its interrupts are message-based, assignment can work.
And it requires at least: 48 MB of MMIO gap space
PCIROOT(36)#PCI(0000)#PCI(0000)
So I added 48 to the 128Mb / 512Mb from the default configuration.

When changing the MMIO config, do I need to remove the card from the VM, change the config and reconnect the card to the VM or can I just change the config without doing anything to the VM ?

No MMIO configuration solve the problem.
Can someone please help me ?

Thanks in advance for your help.

SSD RAID 6 Endurance

Hi,

I’m planning to use Hyper-v cluster with SSD drives. However, I have some problems to get information what RAID level which I should set. The storage will be used for virtualization with some Database, Exchange and other servers (around 50). I was planning to set RAID 6 but I worry about endurance as some people say it will wear twice faster than RAID 10. Other say RAID 6 is absolutely fine. Can somebody advise me if should I use RAID 6 or not?

VGA passthrough with DDA fails when nested virtualization extensions are enabled in Windows Server 2016

My configuration supports SR-IOV and ACS and I have successfully passed through an Nvidia Quadro P2000 via DDA to Hyper-V Gen-2 Windows 10 Fall Creators update (build 10.0.16299) virtual machine on Windows Server 2016.

When I try to enable Nested Virtualization extensions , the virtual machines fails to boot.

Set-VMProcessor -VMName testvm -ExposeVirtualizationExtensions $true

If I disable GPU inside before enabling the Nested Virtualization extensions, enable the Nested Virtualization extensions , boot the virtual machine and enable GPU inside VM after boot , the VM crashes with the following error:

SDDC Management cluster role Error

Trying to use Windows Admin  Center with my microsoft hyperconverged cluster/ Using powershell installed  SDDC Management role but it doesn't starts with errors:

SDDC Management cluster resource failed to come online.

Resource: SDDC Management
Status: There are no more endpoints available from the endpoint mapper.

Cluster resource 'SDDC Management' of type 'SDDC Management' in clustered role 'Cluster Group' failed. The error code was '0x6d9' ('There are no more endpoints available from the endpoint mapper.').

Based on the failure policies for the resource and role, the cluster service may try to bring the resource online on this node or move the group to another node of the cluster and then restart it.  Check the resource and group state using Failover Cluster Manager or the Get-ClusterResource Windows PowerShell cmdlet.

Which way should i look?

ServerManager crashes on every Server OS (2012 R2, 2016, 2019)

Hi All,
today I observed a strange behavior of our first Hyper-V 2012 R2 Cluster (26 Hyper-V Cluster Nodes). As soon as I start the Servermanager on one of this Nodes, it crashes when enumerating / doing the inventory of the "All Servers" Group.
All Hyper-V Servers are fully patched (Patchday 13th of August 2019). So I tried to connect to one of the 26 Hyper-V-Cluster Nodes from one Standalone Server (OS 2016, fully patched on 13th of August 2019) and I get the same errors, as soon as the Servermanager on the 2016 Server enumerates the "All Servers" Group.

I gave it one more try and did the same on a Standalone 2012 R2 Server (patched in July 2019) an even here I got the same errors.

On our second Hyper-V 2012 R2 Cluster (same OS, same Config as our first Hyper-V Cluster) but with only 4 Nodes, fully patched on 13th of August 2019, everything works fine when opening Servermanager...
Any Ideas? Are the 26 Hyper-V Nodes producing too much Info causing Servermanager to crash?

I´ve tried everthing, creating a new ServerComponentCache, clearing the user.config in "...\AppData\Local\Microsoft_Corporation\ServerManager.exe_StrongName_m3xk0k0ucj0oj3ai2hibnhnv4xobnimj\6.3.0.0",
creating a new ServerList.xml in "...\\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Windows\ServerManager", installed .net Framework 4.8 including all security patches on one of the Hyper-V nodes...

I dont´t think, this has to do with Hyper-V itself...

Nothing worked...
Regards
Juergen

Server Manager crashes on every Server OS (2012 R2, 2016, 2019)

Hi All,
today I observed a strange behavior of our first Hyper-V 2012 R2 Cluster (26 Hyper-V Cluster Nodes). As soon as I start the Servermanager (ServerManager.exe) on one of this Nodes, it crashes when enumerating / doing the inventory of the "All Servers" Group.

Regards
Juergen

Dismount-VmHostAssignableDevice : The required virtualization driver (pcip.sys) failed to load.

Hello,

i am testing discrete device assignment in hyper-v 2016.

fresh install of host, fresh vm, unmounting a gpu from host and assigning to vm, works fine.

then after some reboots of the vm, it BSOD, and suddenly i can no longer mount/unmount the device on the host.

PS C:\Users\Administrator> Dismount-VmHostAssignableDevice -LocationPath $locationPath -Force -Verbose
VERBOSE: Dismount-VmHostAssignableDevice will dismount an assignable device so it can be assigned to a virtual machine.
Dismount-VmHostAssignableDevice : The operation failed.
The required virtualization driver (pcip.sys) failed to load.
The operation failed.
The required virtualization driver (pcip.sys) failed to load during a device dismount operation.  The dismount
operation has been cancelled.
At line:1 char:1

no matter what i tried (restarting host several times, enabling/disabling the device with powershell commands - Disable-PnpDevice - Enable-PnpDevice), i can't fix it

update:

tried removing the device with devcon.exe, tried installing the official amd driver for the card on the host. still the same problem.

so, what is causing this issue? how can it be fixed?

Case of the guest stuck stopping...

This month I have ran into three machines that all of a sudden get stuck stopping. At first I notice that my hosts stopped responding in VMM and when I look there is a VM that is just in a "Stopping" state.

The guest VM is not responsive and you can't end the process by finding the GUID. My only option is to move the rest of the that are running on that server to another host and force reset the host (the host won't normal reboot because it too get stuck on stopping the cluster service, most likely from that stuck guest VM).

I am running a cluster of 2016 Datacenter Core with HPE BL460c Gen8. HPE drivers are up to date and the hosts are almost up to date but lacking the last CU from Microsoft.

Edit:

I also tried to create a process dump of the VM with taskmgr on the host and it won't even do that. I was able to move some VM's off the hosts but others wouldn't move either. I tried to stop the VM's that wouldn't move and now they are stuck stopping.
