Hello folks,

I have 2 clustered Windows Server 2012 R2 Hyper-V and a Stand alone Hyper-V 2012 R2 Server.

I have enabled the live migration feature, using kerberos and configured the Constrained Delegation in AD for all of the Computer account.

I'm trying to live migrate a VM from the standalone machine to a cluster node server, moving the storage to the CSV.

And it continues to fail.

I got in sequence these errors on the source machine:

Source:Hyperv-v-vmms

Eventid: 22040

The description for Event ID 22040 from source Microsoft-Windows-Hyper-V-VMMS cannot be found.

The following information was included with the event:

Any idea?

Thanks in advance

Hi,

I've had problems importing exported hyper-v virtual machines recently. I have also just exported and received no confirmation of the completion of the export.

In which of the hyper-v event logs is this information logged?

Thanks.

Run out of space in merge huge AVHDX file. any idea what to do?

I Hope you will help me with a huge problem..

The problem start in one of our VM in hyper V.

I had a 2TB unallocated space in that machine (win server 16) it and I wanted to move this space to the host (win server 16). so from the host I run a powershell to shrink space of this VM. BUT.. I had checkpoint on this VM (!!)..

So after the shrink process I couldn't power on that VM.

This VM had a 16TB hard disk.. (and no backup)..

In the end I had one VHD that was 30GB on AVHDX that have 500GB (this was the newest/latest checkpoint) and one more AVHDX with 15+TB..

After a lot of error message (mismatch etc) I decided to start merging the two AVHDX to the parent VHD. the first AVHDX (the 500GB) merged fine. now I need to merge the 16 TB to the parent.

before the second merge process I enter to the settings of that VM (in the host).. In the hard disk I saw that this VM is pointing to the first AVHDX (that is not exist because I did the first merge process with that file) so of course the VM didn't power on... I didn't wanted to point the hard disk to the second AVHDX (the 16 TB ) so because of that I started the second merge..

In that server (host) I had 5.5 TB free so I started the merging process. Now I have 400GB so I paused the merging process. the VHD is something about 6.5TB and the AVHDX is still 16TB.

How can I increase the C drive? If I add external 10TB USB drive. how can I increase C drive with that USB?

What will happens if i'll cancel the merge processes now and change the AVHDX in settings of this VM manually?

I so need to get to the files in that VM.. So Frustration...

Issue with installing linux subsystem.

Hi, I was trying to isntall linux subsystem through powershell, and when I tried to use "Enable-WindowsOptionalFeature -Online -FeatureName VirtualMachinePlatform" command, I get a following error,

Enable-WindowsOptionalFeature : Feature name VirtualMachinePlatform is unknown.

At line:1 char:1

+ Enable-WindowsOptionalFeature -Online -FeatureName VirtualMachinePlat ...

+ ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

    + CategoryInfo          : NotSpecified: (:) [Enable-WindowsOptionalFeature], COMException

    + FullyQualifiedErrorId : Microsoft.Dism.Commands.EnableWindowsOptionalFeatureCommand

Not so sure how to fix this.

I first posted this on Microsoft Community, and one suggestion was to "Locate the Trusted Installer service, restart it, and set the startup type to automatic," but I wasn't able to locate that as well. How should I go about this issue?

Thanks

[POWERSHELL] - Configure Network Configuration in a VM

Hi,

I have a Hyper-v host running several VMs ...

I would like to automate the Network configuration on 1 or several VMs via PowerShell.

When you use the cmdlet Get-VM, there is not the parameter -Name that I can use with the "Get-VM ... | New-NetIPAddress -IPAddress ..."

Do you have an idea please ?

Thank you.

Mac Address Spoofing broken in Hyper-V 2019

$

I believe we have come accross a bug in Windows Server 2019 Hyper-V.
Does anyone in here know how to report this to Microsoft?

To make some virtual network appliances work, we need to activate the function "Mac Address Spoofing" on the vNIC of the VM's internal interface.

This is needed for VPLS setup and for a VPN concentrator setup.

The function is working, but with highly reduced performance, especially upload goes from 800 Mbit/s to 30 Mbit/s, and ping latency from 1-2 ms to 5-8 ms.

We have tried Mikrotik routers, pfSense, SoftEther on Windows, and we even set up a Windows Server as a router, and the issue is present i all cases.

It only appears then the VM acts as a router, that is traffic coming in through one interface and out through another, and only when Mac Address Spoofing is activated.

We have tried similar setup on VMware where the similar setup requires something called "promiscuous mode", and it works fne with the same VM's.

To make the test complete, we also tested with a Server 2016 Hyper-V, and that works as well.

So Mac Address Spoofing Works in Windows server Hyper-V 2016, but not in Windows server Hyper-V 2019.

Internal Switches and DHCP

New to Hyper_v and running on Windows 10 1809 and 1903. I have setup some VMs with the 'Default Switch' which is of type Internal. The VMs seem to be getting DHCP from this switch and using it as gateway and DNS. The virtual adapter then acts as a NAT gateway out to the network. Is this as expected? Can't find any good documentation on this.

Hide Connection Bar in Virtual Machine Connection

Hello All,

I am reading this article:

https://ravingroo.com/1097/captain-obvious-log-hide-remote-desktop-connection-bar/

And am trying to do this with my Hyper-V Virtual Machine Connection windows, but do not see this available in the place that I would expect it via the dialogs found in the above article.

Where is this hiding? :)

Thank you,

Failover Cluster Host Crashes when live migrating VMs

EVENT-ID: 1230, 1146 & 1069

Server 2016 3 Node Cluster. Validation wizard passes.

When live migrating VMs between host a VM will hang up in a "re-starting" or "processing" mode. The VM does belong to either host and cannot be removed from the Failover Cluster Manger, and doesn't show on the HyperV manager. The Failover Cluster Events then cycle the EVENT-ID: 1230, 1146 & 1069 events. All VM on the host become completely unresponsive.

The only way to correct the cluster is hard shutdown the host server experiencing the Event-IDs. Then import the original VM which began the issues.

Windows 10 Build 10240 Managing Hyper-V on 2012 R2 Datacenter Cannot Connect

$

So, we have a total of six Hyper-V servers in our environment. All six were installed from the same Server 2012 R2 Datacenter ISO. I have been managing these from my Windows 8.1 machine with no issues. I got ahold of Windows 10 build 10240, and I am running into an issue connecting to the servers now.

The strange thing is that I CAN connect to one of them. I cannot figure out what is different on this one server from the other five. Windows updates maybe? I migrated all the VMs off one of the servers I cannot manage remotely, performed all Windows Updates, and I still cannot connect to it.

I am reading that Windows 10 should be backward-compatible with managing Hyper-V on 2012, but on connection, it appears a WMI namespace is missing that the Windows 10 tools are trying to connect to.

I am not trying to use alternate credentials (I read this will NOT work from 10 to 2012 R2). Any ideas why this is not working? Several Google searches have not told me anything so far. I realize Windows 10 has not officially been released yet, but a few of us are testing the waters for compatibility issues.

I would appreciate any help anybody can offer.

Eric

EDIT: Just to have the solution at the top of the thread, thanks to BrianEh below, the WMI namespace became corrupted due to an HP software update. Reregistering the MOF fixes the issue.

Run Elevated:

In Windows Server 2016 by using the new VHDS (sets) format of disk you are supposed to be able to use Hyper-V replica. However I can't get this to work. Has anyone got this working?

Hyper-V 2019 2 node cluster - intermittent host / cluster issue when restarting a VM

$

Hi all,

Hoping someone may have ideas on how to resolve this one!  We have a 2-node cluster (HPE ProLiant DL360 Gen10) built on Windows 2019 Standard GUI, iSCSI to Nimble storage.  All validation tests pass with flying colors!  When we were testing, i.e. with very little load we had one instance of a 2019 VM (vm version 9) which got stuck in a 'stopping-critical' state when rebooting.  At this point, the host has gone 'awol' with cluster functions, from then on any cluster operation failed until the host is rebooted (draining would never finish, any other live migration times out and fails).  We found that we had a switch down so put it down to that (even though redundant paths were AOK).  Since then it has been working beautifully as expected, I've done plenty of migrations, draining of hosts without issue, until yesterday.  The client decided to patch a Window 7 VM, it rebooted and got stuck in the same fashion, Stopping-Critical.  I have tried the trick of killing the VM process, this does not work in this scenario.  There is nothing we can do expect cold boot the server, forcing failover to the other host.  Obviously a bit of an issue as the 30 servers now running on there restart on the other host, interrupting file / print services etc.

I've read about disabling VMQ but I really don't want to go disabling the advanced performance features unless we absolutely have to.  I am using Dynamic memory on most of the machines, otherwise pretty standard configurations.

No issues with resource we are using under half memory on both hosts.

Any ideas?

Thanks,
Simon

Merge-VHD gets to 99% then stops or hangs

$

Hello,

Im having trouble merging an AVHDX into the parent VHDX.  The AVHDX is only 21MB but after running the Merge-VHD command in powershell it gets to 99% and just stops or hangs there.  The IO on the CSV drops to nothing and it never actually finishes merging into the VHDX.

Is there anything else I should try here?  This is the last AVHDX file I needed to merge to recover the VM.  If I cancel the Merge-VHD powershell it locks the file and I have to reboot the node in order to try again.

Could another node in the cluster still be holding a lock on one of the files that is preventing the merge from finishing?

2012 R2 - Checkpoint cleanup from failed VM backup

$

We recently had a network traffic / virtual switch issue crop up, due to VMQ being enabled and improperly configured on Broadcom 10GbE adapters.  While that failure occurred, our backup appliances were taking backups of VMs.  Because of lost network connectivity, the Hyper-V checkpoints used for those backups remain on some of our VMs.

These checkpoints do not have the usual "Delete Checkpoint" / "Delete Checkpoint Subtree" options available to them.  How do I remove them so the virtual disks are merged and back to a single VHDX per virtual disk?
