Windows 10 VM on Server 2019 Hyper-V

$

Has anyone had any issues building a Windows 10 VM on Server 2019 with Hyper-V installed?

I keep getting OOBE errors (Keyboard, Region, etc) but if I build using the same ISO on my Windows 10 Hyper-V then it builds fine.

Quite a number of people of having issues and there are workarounds but if the ISO is working fine then surely something else is causing the issue?

REFS for a Hyper-V CSV Volume

I am currently running a 4 node Server 2016 Hyper-V cluster storage is provided by a DELL MD3200 SAN normal concepts for CSV volume on NTFS are in place as previously nodes where 2012R2 and 2008R2 prior. My main question is I am going to be adding another SAN DELL MD3420 and I have been wondering whether to use REFS for the file system for VM's situated on this SAN.

I came across a Veeam article advising moving to this scenario however I would like to get the opinion of you all.

Features on Demand on Hyper-V Server 2019

A Server Core installation of Server 2019 Standard / Datacenter allows 'Features on Demand' to be installed (mmc, event viewer, etc, plus optionalliy IE11). Does anyone know whether it's possible to install the features on the stand-alone (free) Hyper-V Server 2019? I've just tried running the Powershell commands to install them (listed here: https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/windows-server/get-started-19/install-fod-19) - it reports as completed successfully, but the commands don't seem to be available and a search on the C drive for the relevant .exe files doesn't locate anything.

It may well be that, given that Hyper-V Server is free, the features aren't available - but it would be useful to know for sure.

Thanks

How to protect against network outage?

Hi,

In a few weeks we will have major network maintenance. For about 5min we will lose all network connectivity. We tested this scenario in a lab and noticed that the Hyper-V cluster evacuated all hosts one by one and shutdown the VMs. Even though we had quorum disks supplied over FC. How can I protect my Hyper-V clusters from shutting down because of network failure?

Cannot access application if Remote Access Server is offline.

Hello Everyone,

I am a beginner in Microsoft forums so please excuse and guide me if i posted this in wrong section of the forum.

Server Configured like this:

1. A physical server named "RGB" and a virtual machine within it named "SON"

2. SON is primary domain controller and RGB is a backup domain controller.

3. SON has Remote access role installed which is working fine as of now.

4. RGB has Tally licence gateway server installed which is an accounting software.

5. RGB IP Address is 192.168.1.101

6. SON IP Address is 192.168.1.102

7. Remote Access Server assigns IP Address to its Internal Adaptor 192.168.1.201 (through DHCP when the VPN server is online)

My Problem is: (finally :p)

RGB has Tally licence gateway server (accounting software) installed which should distribute licence to its clients through its IP Address 192.168.1.101 (in normal scenario)

But in my case the licence is distributed through 192.168.1.201 which is only available if VPN server is online.

I want to correct this scenario and redirect clients to access licence server through its default ip address 192.168.1.101

If anyone has a clue as to why this is happening and can help me out to rectify the same please revert.

Hi guy's,

We have a VM (hyper v) that had an unallocated space.

I tried to transfer that spase to host. So I power off this VM and run the powershell.. " Resize-VHD –ToMinimumSize..." now my VM is refusing to power on..

What Can I do now? I need that VM..

I tried to inspect the avhdx but didn't get reconnect option..

If I enter to the settings of the VM I can see that the attached AVHDX is referring to a small file:

and this is the that the VM uses:

But It couldn't be a small file because I know that this VM has much more (16Tb +-)  so, Can I reconnect The 16...KB file to the VM?

I'f I try to do that I get this warning:

What Should I do?

Hyper-V VSS writer ecnouter errors during taking VSS snapshot on Windows 2012 R2

When taking VSS snapshot with Hyper-V VSS writer on Windows 2012 R2, there are frequently some warning/error logs in Windows Event log. This will make the Hyper-V VSS writer goes to a bad state and in BCD, the BACKUP_METADATA is also missing for the problematic VM.

The logs in Windows Event log are as below:

In Windows Log->Application, there will be logs as:

A VSS writer has rejected an event with error 0x800423f4, The writer experienced a non-transient error.  If the backup process is retried,

the error is likely to reoccur.

. Changes that the writer made to the writer components while handling the event will not be available to the requester. Check the event log for related events from the application hosting the VSS writer.

Operation:

   PrepareForSnapshot Event

Context:

   Execution Context: Writer

   Writer Class Id: {66841cd4-6ded-4f4b-8f17-fd23f8ddc3de}

   Command Line: C:\Windows\system32\vmms.exe

   Process ID: 2024

In Hyper-V-VMMS there are logs as:

In Hyper-V-Worker there are logs as:

The problematic VMs are with Windows OS, Windows 2008R2, Windows 2012 R2 and Windows 8.1.

My question is:

What is the cause of this problem? The event logs are not understandable at all.

How should I fix this problem?

Critical Bug: Hyper-V 2019 - Guest VMs do not shutdown gracefully when host shuts down

$

Greetings,

Since December 2018, Hyper-v on Windows Server 2019 users have been reporting this issue.  I am posting a new thread because the original thread on the topic had a potentially misleading headline.  And most of the ensuing thread consisted of repeated requests for more information when in fact that information had already been provided.  And yet, even after an MS representative confirmed through his own testing that the (serious) problem exists, no further information has been provided for over five months.

The problem, in a nut-shell is this:  Guest VMs do not shut down gracefully when the Hyper-v host is shut down or restarted, regardless of guest VM settings.

Even when a guest VM is set to "shut down the guest operating system" as its default behavior for the "Automatic Stop Action",  the Hyper-v host doesnot actually shut down the guest VM(s) as it shuts itself down.  Rather, the VMs are just terminated as though power is cut.  Upon rebooting, the guest VMs will report no attempt to be shut down, and instead report that the prior shutdown was unplanned.

This behavior is easily reproduced.  Merely. . .

  • Build a Hyper-v 2019 host server
  • Install a guest VM.
  • Set the guest VM to "shut down the guest operating system" under "Automatic Stop Action."
  • Reboot the Hyper-v host while the guest VM is running.

. . .you will find that the guest VM was merely switched off ungracefully.

Microsoft, please acknowledge this issue and give us an ETR.  I'm sure I'm not the only person putting their server upgrades on hold after running into this issue.  Various work-arounds (using "save state" instead of "shut down") are not a viable option for me.  Please, give us some news and hope (after an inexplicably long period of waiting) that a fix is imminent.

Best Regards,

Brian

Hyper-V 2019 - Guest VM's shutdown unexpectedly

Hi,

Since upgrading my Hyper-V servers to Windows Server 2019, including KB4471332 from last night, my guest VM's do not power down on restart of the 2019 host.

I can confirm integration components are as up to date as possible, and each guest is configured to shutdown when the host restarts.

Each guest gets the "Why did I shutdown unexpectedly message".

The even viewer yields the following all within 30 seconds of restarting the host:

Shut down physical computer. Stopping/saving all virtual machines...

'ADFS' failed to perform the 'Shutting Down' operation. The virtual machine is currently performing the following operation: 'Shutting Down'. (Virtual machine ID 0CFDF648-EE9D-4141-9EBD-9A6D911C3442)
'ADFS' failed to shut down. (Virtual machine ID 0CFDF648-EE9D-4141-9EBD-9A6D911C3442)

The Update Orchestrator Service service terminated with the following error:
This operation returned because the timeout period expired.

Failed to restore configuration for port 59229EE2-C880-4BF2-9849-89A21EC17772 (Friendly Name: ) on switch 300C0E17-E123-4182-BE62-AAD1860BE841 (Friendly Name: ), status = Object Name not found..

Everything is configured as it was on the 2016 Hyper-V host.

The message ADFS failed to shut down because it is shutting down seems terribly odd to me.  Of course its shutting down, just need the host to wait. (Yes the registry is set to 120 as the default time for the host....)

Fairly simple to recreate....just spin up a 2019 server, install Hyper-V role, throw in a VM and test.

Any help would be appreciated, but my money is on it being another bug.

Storage migration for virtual machine failed with error ' General accesss denied error' 0x80070005 when trying to migrate virtual machine storage (source host  :2012 r2 , destination host : windows server 2019

I have a Windows Server 2016 Hyper-V core installation.
It has 2 physical NICs installed in it.
In Powershell, Get-NetAdapter shows 2 physical and 2 virtual NICs. Terrible formatting below...

Name                      InterfaceDescription                    ifIndex Status       MacAddress             LinkSpeed
----                      --------------------                    ------- ------       ----------             ---------
Ethernet                  Broadcom NetXtreme Gigabit Ethernet           7
vEthernet (Test Network)  Hyper-V Virtual Ethernet Adapter #2           6
vEthernet (Firewall Ne... Hyper-V Virtual Ethernet Adapter              9
Ethernet 2                Intel(R) PRO/1000 GT Desktop Adapter          2

In Powershell, Get-NetAdapterBinding -ComponentID ms_tcpip6
Shows that ms_tcpip6 is enabled on all 4 NICs.

This server has been rebooted recently.
When I go into sconfig, select option 8 (Network Settings), and select either virtual NIC, I get the message...
C:\Windows\System32\en-US\sconfig.vbs(726, 21) SWbemObjectEx: Invalid index.

ms_tcpip is on bound on the physical networks.

ipconfig /all
Shows IP V4 addresses but no IPV6 addresses as the DHCP server doesn't set them.

So far, this has me stumped as few people seem to have hit this hurdle with Server 2016.

Error while removing snapshots Cannot delete checkpoint: The system cannot find the file specified. (0x80070002)

Hello,

When I try to remove all snapshots of a specific VM I get the following error:
Cannot delete checkpoint: The system cannot find the file specified. (0x80070002).

This VM originally had 2 vhdx files. Later a third disk was added just temporarily.
During backups the machine created some checkpoints and the machine was running on avhdx files.

After that the temporarly avhdx files and vhdx files were deleted from the vm.

Now we can't do a export, live migration or we can't even remove the snapshots by running:
get-vmsnapshot -computername "computername" -vmname "vmname"| remove-vmsnapshot

The machine itself is still running fine, but we need to move the VM.

Any ideas how to fix this? I think we need to delete delete the removed .avhdx files from a configuration file.
But this is not possible in the .vmcx files as far as i know.

Thank you in advance.

Network config / setup virtual switches for Linux guest

Dear Community,

I have a notebook with windows 10. The notebook has 2 network adapters: Ethernet and Wireless Lan. Of course, I'm travelling so both adapters are used with dhcp in different networks. I already switched on Hyper-V.

I want to install a linux guest system (suse linux) with a special database. But I'm not sure how to configure.

How can I setup the virtual switches?

I need to connect to the linux with a fix hostname (the IP can differ), so I can use the database.

When I’am at home I also want use the linux more and also connect the linux to the internet.

Kind Regards

Martina

Hello All,

I am trying to create a VM in Hyper-v (type 1 hypervisor) server that I just stood up. When I go to create the VM this is the error that I get. I received the first error in the screen shot then I shutdown and deleted the VM and when I recreated it I received the error in the second screen shot.

I tried rebooting the host but that did not work. Any thoughts?

Hi All

1.i am new to hyperv, This is the first virtual machine i am creating. i am having a virtual machine server01 which is perfectly working,  i have created a new virtual machine server02 similar to server01 settings, i.e same VLAN. VM settings of Server01 an Server02 are similar.

Windows Firewall is disabled on Server02 and Server01
i have disabled network card and enabled.
checked network card properties of server1 and server02-Client for microsoft networks-Advanced VLAN ID is 0 for both the servers.
Default gateway settings, DNS setting are same for both the servers.
RDP is enabled on Server02
I was able to join server02 to domain and i can see my domain name on the network card ie(ncpa.cpl) of server02.

The issue is i am not able to ping default gateway from Server02 nor i am able to RDP the server but hostname and ip is resolving when i do nslookup from my jumpserver. experts guide me on this.

2. On VMware we have concept of vmware tools, in hyperv is there anything like this.

Why does VMs are not releasing their memory? W2012R2 fully patched, 4 VMs and no free memmory available

My H-V Host: Dell R720 - 32 GB of RAM

VM Name Min  Max Needing
VM01 1024  4096 1700
VM02 2048 6192 4200
VM03 1024  2048 1200
VM04 6000 (no dynamic memory)
VM05 4096 (no dynamic Memory)

Based on task manager, =~9 GB of RAM available
No backup in progress

So, i tried to change the RAM of the VM04 to 12GB, 10Gb, even 8GB...
The VM03 has refused to start due to low memory

So i´ve shutted down, VM03, still no memory available to start VM04
So i´ve shutted down, VM02, still no memory available to start VM04
So i´ve shutted down, VM01, still no memory available to start VM04

RAMMap and VMMAP and ProcExplorer wern´t able to find what was eating up the RAM

Even with all VMs stopped (beside VM05).. still no memory available to start VM04

What i did: after a reboot of the HV Host.. everything was fine

Why is that?
and how do diagnose?
If happens again in the future, what should I try?

Firmware options missing

I have a virtual machine set up on a Windows 2012 datacenter server.  I want to set up a second one.  I created one and made sure that all of the settings were identical to the first one.  But it won't boot -- you get a DOS level boot error when you try.  In the course of troubleshooting this, I discovered that the booting is controlled from the firmware option of settings.  But the settings on my machine don't include firmware

Can someone tell me how to make this option appear?
