Hello,
I have 2 Windows Server 2012 R2 machines. Both have Hyper-V installed.
I want to migrate a VM from one machine to another.
After selecting where to move the VM a popup appears:
Move Wizard / There was an error during move operation. / Migration operation on 'VM-NAME' failed. / The operation failed with error code '32780'.
I searched all Internet for Hyper-V error 32780, no luck so far.
Any ideas?
Thank you!

Send Initial Replica to external harddisk - time delay?

Hi,

We've got two hyper-v 2012 R2 clusters with replicas configured, separated via WAN. We want to transfer a large VM (<4TB) to the other cluster, but we're wondering how much time delay the replication mechanism can tolerate and I can't find any specific value or  statement about it.

Is there any?

Windows 2012r2 Hyper-V Gen 2 boot options missing

Ok, I've wasted an entire day searching for an answer for this.  I found a few people with the same issue but no answers.

I built a Win10 1607 Gen2 VM.  I mounted an ISO to capture windows for SCCM.   I cant change my boot settings in Firmware because they are missing.

I went to the CLI in PS and tried Set-VMFirmware -VMName 1607 -BootOrder "DVDDrive","HardDiskDrive"

Set-VMFirmware : Cannot bind parameter 'BootOrder'. Cannot convert the "DVDDrive" value of type "System.String" to
type "Microsoft.HyperV.PowerShell.VMComponentObject".

Has something change in the was this is done?   I have 5 Hypervisors all running the same build and none of the gen 2 machines have this option.  The Gen1 VM's are fine.

UEFI Boot order options missing from Hyper-V host

I have two 2012R2 Hyper-V Hosts. On one of the hosts, I have no options to set UEFI Boot order, either on existing virtual machines, or on new ones. On the other host, all options are available. I have a series of powershell commands I run to create a Gen 2 VM.  Here is the output from the good Hyper-V host:

Here's the output from the bad host:

I am unable to add any boot entries, or modify:

Set-VMFirmware : The operation is not available.

So, something is wrong with this particular Hyper-V host, but I don't know what to troubleshoot - any ideas?

SR-IOV active on VMs, even though get-vmhost.IovSupportReasons reports {OK}

One of our servers (HQ DL580g7, using Emulex OCe14102-UX Nic) has recently begun failing to make SR-IOV active for VM's assigned to the applicable vSwitch. This had been working in the past, but we did not notice when it stopped working  to have a clue what event has triggered the failure.

This server is in a cluster with 2 other identically configured servers. We can live-migrate a VM from that server to either of the other two and SR-IOV becomes active for it on the other servers.

(get-vmhost).IovSupportReasons reports {OK}, and (get-vmhost).IovSupport reports True.

But a VM configured to use SR-IOV on the host still reports it is using VMQ. What else are we missing?

iSCSI Offload and/or TCP Offload

We have Broadcom BCM57840 NICs in our servers to connect to an iSCSI SAN. These cards have TCP Offload Engine and iSCSI Offload Engine (both licensed).

They have been left disabled in the past. Now I'm looking at optimizing things a bit... should I enabled them? Both or just one? I cannot find any piece of info about the correct configuration and the coexistence of the two offload engines.

Hyper-V 2012 R2 - authentication issues (EventID 5823)

Hi,

We have a Windows 2012 R2 Hyper-V Cluster running for several years now. On one of the hosts Domain accounts were no longer usable - had to Login using the local admin account. The VMs are running just fine - but not manageable through SCVMM or Failover Cluster Manager anymore. Powershell on hyper-v Level works.

I checked Logs... the only thing I found is in Systems: a DNS error followed by Event 5823 "The System sucessfully changed ist Password on the Domain Controller XXX. This Event is logged when the Password for the Computer account is Change by the System...".

The host is able to reach all DNS and AD servers. Name resolution works. I searched for the Event 5823 - found many entries regarding mix of AD 2003 and AD 2012... but this is not the cause of the problem as we never had an Active Directory 2003 or Domain Level 2003. Does anyone have an idea how to find the reason for this problem? I would try to use reset-computermachinepassword in hope of not having to reboot the server. Does anyone knows more about this situation and what works best?

Server 2016 Hyper-V Remote desktop connection certificate mismatch issue

Hi,

I built a Windows server 2016 with the Hyper-V role, and when I try to connect to a VM if fails with a "certificate mismatch" error. VM is located in the same server.  It seems that the mismatch is because of the FQDN in the certificate (servername vs servername.lab.internal).   I will appreciate any information that could resolver the issue that I am experiencing.

Thanks

Sharing files from host

Hi

What is the best way to share user files from host into Windows Server 2016 domain controller VM? I want the DC users to be able to access files but also keep the files on host for easy backup.

How to compact a VHDX with ReFS?

$

Hi, we have Exchange 2016 running on virtual Windows Server 2012 R2 on Hyper-V 2012 R2. For the databases we are using a ReFS volume, as recommended by MS. (It is a separate VHDX file that contains only one partition which is formatted with ReFS.)

The disk/volume is 4.5 TB in size, and though it never was full, the VHDX file grew to 4.5 TB. We did some cleanup and now have more than 2 TB free on the volume, but still I cannot shrink the volume to less than 4.4 TB. Also our SAN considers 4.4 TB as allocated.

I used SDELETE and PRECOMPACT to overwrite free space with zeroes, also optimized the drive (through the GUI and through Powershell with -RETRIM option), all of that multiple times, but without success. I guess that ReFS somehow does not really write the zeroed clusters but just marks them as unused or something like that, and the Hypervisor is not aware of that.

Is there anything I can do? (Except for creating a new VHDX and copying the files over, for which I don't have enough space.)

Licensing and Clusterd Roles

I am implementing a (2) node Hyper-V cluster with 7 VMs (2) of these VMs are DCs and are permanently located on local storage on each node. The other 5 are part of the cluster. From what I understand, this means I will need (48) 2-Core packs to license the VMs since, in a failover situation, up to (6) VMs has the potential to run on each node.

Is this math correct?

Additionally, if I am to use the clustered File Server role or the clustered DHCP Server Role, is there any additional licensing I will need?

Lastly, it was recommended to me that I put the DCs on local storage on each node in the event that something goes wrong with the cluster. That being said, should I have any similar concerns using the DHCP Cluster role?

Hi Folks ,

What can be a better practice to upgrade a hyper v server from Hyper V server 2008 R2 to Windows Hyper V server 2012 /2012 R2.

A Clean install is preferred in this scenario ?

Exposing >4GB Graphics Card Memory to VM using DDA

$

Hello,

We have a Hyper-V Server 2016 with a PCIe graphics card with 8GB of memory exposed via DDA to a Windows 10 VM, but we can only see 4GB of graphics card RAM available from inside the VM. We used the "Set-VM -HighMemoryMappedIoSpace 8000MB" command and from the hypervisor we can see 8GB allocated, but it's not available from within the VM.

Is there an artificial limit within Hyper-V that is restricting DDA from exposing greater than 4GB of graphics memory? Or are we simply doing something wrong?

Thanks,

Trevor

Live Migration between AD Forests

Hello Everyone.

I would like to LiveMigrate a VM from HostA in AD Forest1 to HostB in AD Forest2.  There is a two-way trust established between the two AD Forests.  Does anyone know if this is possible?  I have not been successful.

Hyper-V 2012 R2 VM Network Disconnect in both Cluster Environment or Stand Alone Hosts

$

I know this has been asked many times over, but I can tell you every trick stated doesn't help me and I bet there are other out there still struggling like me to where I want to rip out those Broadcoms and get Intel's. Well not so easy to do when HP DL380 servers come with Broadcom LOM's right?

I have the same issue with all my HP DL380's whether they're in a cluster or a stand alone Host. They have all the HP 1Gb 4-Port 331FLR's or 331T's, which are basically Broadcom's so even the LOM's are. I was back and forth with MS and HP Support Teams only to hit a brick wall and not have a resolve so issue still happens......even today which is why I'm finally writing this.

Did the usual such as VMQ off, PowerSettings Off, updated driver to the "b57nd60a.sys" as noted in MS KB 2986895 with no luck. My VM's themselves only have one NIC connection though now thinking about trying dual NIC's to VM's with issue.

I know it's not clustering or storage as per say and the reason is that I have the issue with a couple of my stand alone hosts that use local drive storage on server. What I do know is that the issue seems to be when the VM is stressing the network for long periods of time as it's only happening on my VM's (running 2012 R2 as well) that are the backup servers. These VM Servers that drop off the network use VEEAM B&R as well as stream Azure Backups. It seems when Azure is uploading for a long period of time this is when the VM's disconnect from the network and I get the yellow triangle of aggravation. In the cluster I can migrate the VM and be back up and running, though sometimes after migrating it'll drop later that day or maybe not. On the stand alone hosts I have no choice other than to reboot the VM to get it back up and running.

Again, I'm just putting this out there because I'm sure I'm not the only one still having this issue even after doing everything people suggest. Please don't just post an answer that's a re-post from another thread or said links as I've been through them all. What I'd like to have is others that still have the same issue as i and can confirm they have a fix such as just put in Intel NIC's. After all I have both a Cluster with HP SAN as well as HP stand alone hosts with local storage and have the exact same issue. Just funny how every other VM on the Host either Cluster or Stand Alone are unaffected when they use the same network paths.

Thanks, Mark

Unable to migrate VM between Hyper-V Servers

So am using this command to vacate our nodes into the other forest: Get-VM | % { Move-VM -DestinationHost host.fqdn -IncludeStorage -DestinationStoragePath "C:\ClusterStorage\Volume12\$($_.name)" -verbose }

I'm not sure, smells like a bug? Or I could have been stuffing something up somewhere.

I'm trying did it in such way:

destHost: vins0010

srcHost:   vins011

Move-VM vins003-seo -DestinationHost vins0010.dest.fqdn -IncludeStorage -DestinationStoragePath "C:\ClusterStorage\Volume1\Hyper-V"

and got:

Move-VM : Virtual machine migration operation failed at migration source.
Failed to create folder.
Virtual machine migration operation for 'vins003-seo' failed at migration source 'VINS011'. (Virtual machine ID

found.'('0x80070035').

I m little confused. Why I got so strange destination folder path?

'\\VINS0010\VINS011.801624481$\{63f1501b-791d-4340-ac2d-0fac9d7e7df9}\Hyper-V\Virtual Hard Disks'

What does it mean VINS011.801624481$ in dest path and where are from it appears here?

Experiences with in-place upgrade from 2012 R2 Core Hyper-V Cluster to 2016 Core Cluster?

So, i was thinking about upgrading my HV Cluster (8 Nodes Server 2012 R2 Core Datacenter) to Windows Server 2016.

I know that usually inplace upgrades are not the way to go, but i was thinking that these Server are rather barebones due to them beeing 1st Core Servers and 2nd only serving Hyper V, albeit in a Failover Cluster. In other words there are no other features or roles enabled and apart from a backup client and a MPIO software from my storage vendor theres nothing installed on them.

So i thought this might maybe work out.

Would just get some input from you guys who have maybe allready tried it or have otherwise useful information regarding my endevour?

Build Hyper-V Server 2012 R2 - can't get past KB3172729 and KB2883200

Hello!

I am building a new Hyper-V Server 2012 R2 host (not Windows Server) and I am having problems with getting it fully patched.  I've done this many times in the past and normally get about 30 updates initially, then a single large update, then a boat-load of additional updates.  But this time I get the 30 (or so) initial updates, then two updates (KB3172729 and KB2883200).  Once I install these I can't install any further updates.  No matter what I try (uninstalling one at a time, etc.) I can't seem to get any further updates to be available.  Some notes:

  • I've tried this on three different servers - all with the same results.
  • I've tried updating these servers for the past few weeks - all with the same results.
  • I am not using WSUS - just direct Windows Updates.
  • These three server were in 3 separate geographic locations with 3 different ISP's.

I'm just not sure what to do - I know that there are more updates out there but I can't seem to get to them.

Anyone have any idea of what I should try?

Thanks.. dave

vhd paths in Hyper-V Manager and Failover Cluster Manager

$

Hello Everyone,

Yesterday I was doing some storage migration in the cluster. I added some 3PAR storage to my environment and wanted to migrate the VMs from the volumes of the HITACHI disks we have to 3PARs. We migrated the vhd files of the VMs to the 3PAR before we added 3PAR to the cluster, changed the path of the vhd files of the VMs to the 3PAR volumes, and then we added the 3PAR to the existing HITACHI cluster. Everything went smooth, and the Hyper-V manager was showing the new volume for the VMs. I powered on all the VMs and they were running smooth also. The only thing that I was concerned, was Failover Cluster Manager, because the VMs in  services and application were not reflecting the new volume that I assigned to those VMs. It was still showing the path of the old volume of the HITACHI disks.

Since it is a service and application, I understand that the new volume is now operating in the 3PAR, and is not showing the right path,  but is it something that I have to configure or anything I should do to reflect the new volumes in the Failover Cluster Manager, cause I'm not very experienced with VMs environment.

Thank you

Enion
