Hyper-V Replica 2012 R2 to 2016?

0

Hello Everyone!

Just asked myself and google if it would be possible to set up Hyper-V Replica between a Hyper-V Host running Windows Server 2012 R2 and a Hyper-V Host running Windows Server 2016... did not find a good answer though.

Does someone know the answer?

Thanks,
Jens

Hyper-v and Virtual switches

I know that it is not the same, BUT.... we have been running VMs on VMware 2.0.2 for a looooong time and the hardware is getting too old and starting to fail.  So, we decided to bite the bullet and get some newer hardware and install Hyper-V 2012 R2 Core on it.  Installing the base was no problem, but the virtual switch is getting on my nerves as we cannot get network connectivity on the VMs that we create.  We are running CentOS 6 as the VMs (running Web Servers and Mail Servers).   With VMware 2.0.2, we could set up the VMs on totally different subnets than from the hosts.  For example, we are running the host on a 184.71.91 network and the VMs are running on a 184.71.66 network and a 184.69.43 network.

I was wondering if it is possible for Hyper-V to do the same, or are we out of luck?

Virtualization Test

Hello.

I have a scenario I was doing Virtualization test after my two Virtual Server encountered Network hang, I went and did replication test that created a separate Virtual Server lets say its called DBtest, now because of how crucial this server was needed we had to use this server for sometimes and retrieve its data later, we used and retrieved some data but unfortunately forgot to retrieve a very important data. is there a way to get this data from this DBtest server? snapshot was taken. kindly help if this can be retrieve how and where we can them.

Thanks.

NicTeam not connected after HyperV virtual switch.

Hello everyone,

I recently installed a fresh copy of hyper-v server 2016 (core hyper-v).
After the setup I created a nicteam whit no problems, all is working well.

But upon installing the Hyper V role and creating a virtual switch (as asked in the Hyper V setup) the nicteam connection is no longer functioning. And the newly created Hyper V virtual switch has no internet connection.

I have no clue of what the problem could be.
after much searching on the web I decided to post and ask for help.

My Setup:

  • 2 Gigabit Ethernet controllers bundled into Marvell 88E1116 (MCP55 Pro)

it's an onboard controller on a MS-9661

Configuration:
Both gig con are joined to one nicteam, the team has the following setup:

  • Teaming mode: LACP (Cisco switch, works just fine whit out Hyper)
  • Load balancing mode: Hyper-V Port
  • no standby adapters selected

Team Interfaces:
just one team interface whit no special setting.
Has a manual assigned IP.

As I mentioned as long as I have no virtual hyper-v network interface created on the team interface there is no problem. When I create a hyper-v virtual network interface on the team interface the team interface displays the following message: No Network Connection

Any help would be much appreciated.

hyper-v host deploy to bare metal

Currently have a VMware infrastructure and want to switch over Hyper-V 2016.

I have new server to start with.  I don't have SCCM or VMM installed anywhere.  Should I just install Windows 2016 Server standard and add Hyper-V or is there another way to get a more stripped down Hyper-V hypervisor on the bare metal server?

thanks

Hyper-V Replication with Failover cluster

I have two physical servers two of them has identical Hardware, Apps and OS i have enabled Hyper-v and installed 2 VMs 1. for app and 2. for DB. Everything is perfect know i have enabled the Hyper-V replication to 2 server as replica of these 2 VMS its replicating no issues. later i have install FOC role to have High Availability on both the primary and replica server

my question is, can i add nodes of replica server which replicated from primary server as a Node in failover cluster manager for HA. Please suggest.

also i have connected to server with a cross-over cable for High availability so one server gets down other can take over

How to relocate VM config files in Server 2016?

0
0

I'm trying to consolidate a number of vhdx files with their corresponding VM config files into a folder named after the VM (regardless of the vhdx or config file names).

Will I need to Export/Import the VM in order to accomplish this task?

Our "standard" directory structure scheme has been violated a number of times now and we need to reduce the potential for confusion/mistakes.

Can these new binary files in 2016 be moved? Can their parent directories be renamed?

I can obtain info about the VM like this:

((Compare-VM -Copy -Path 'H:\VM\<myguid>.vmcx' -GenerateNewID).VM) | Select *

But I'm not sure how this helps me correlate the .vmcx or .vmrs files with the .vhdx or assist in the task at hand.

Hyper-V Role installation fails without reason (Windows Server 2012)

Hi,

We are building a new Hyper-V infratructure, based on Windows Server 2012 Datacanter and multiple HP ML350p Gen8 servers. We've been deploying lost of Server 2012 Hyper-V projects lately (all HP G6 servers), without any problems at all, but this project is a real pain:

We are unable to install the Hyper-V role on any server, at all! There's four of them! All hosts are HP ML350p Gen8, Server 2012 Datacenter, latest updates/firmware/drivers (HP SPP 2012.10.0). BIOS settings are correct/verified for virtualization.
We simply install Hyper-V via Server Manager without any modifications (not selecting any network adapters either, this is all done later using Virtual Network ).

The installation reboots the server, and during boot, the installation fails. After reboot, the Server Manager sais there's been an unexpected error, and have a nice day.

I've been digging through the CBS.log file, and there a very small ERROR portion during installation:

Problems enabling 3D acceleration using DDA

0

Hello,

We have a Windows 10 Pro x64 Gen2 VM on Hyper-V Server 2016 with a graphics card assigned to the VM using DDA. We have managed to get all that working successfully, the card is installed with the latest WHQL signed drivers and we've successfully run a number of 3D tests and confirmed a four to five times increase in framerate over RemoteFX.

However, when testing a number of features such as GPU accelerated browser features, media playback and some testing tools we've found that Direct3D seems to be broken. Taking a look at DXDiag we can see that DirectDraw acceleration and Texture acceleration are both 'Disabled'. Attempting to inspect the graphics configuration leads to problems, as you can't access 'Display adapter properties' from an RDP session. Using the Hyper-V Management Console and direct connecting to the VM only allows us to access and edit the display properties of the 'Microsoft Hyper-V Video' adapter. We can disable that in Device Manager, but then when we attempt to open 'Display adapter properties' it shows the adapter as 'Microsoft Basic Display Adapter' - it has reverted to the basic display driver because the Hyper-V Video adapter has been disabled, but hasn't/isn't able to shift over to the dedicated DDA graphics card.

So how do we set the DDA graphics card as the primary/sole adapter? And can we bypass the RDP restriction disallowing adapter property access? Or is there some other way to force enabling full 3D graphics card features on a VM if you can't remove the Hyper-V Video adapter?

Thanks,

Trevor

Licensing and Clusterd Roles

0
0

I am implementing a (2) node Hyper-V cluster with 7 VMs (2) of these VMs are DCs and are permanently located on local storage on each node. The other 5 are part of the cluster. From what I understand, this means I will need (48) 2-Core packs to license the VMs since, in a failover situation, up to (6) VMs has the potential to run on each node.

Is this math correct?

Additionally, if I am to use the clustered File Server role or the clustered DHCP Server Role, is there any additional licensing I will need?

Lastly, it was recommended to me that I put the DCs on local storage on each node in the event that something goes wrong with the cluster. That being said, should I have any similar concerns using the DHCP Cluster role?

Manage Server 2012 R2 Hyper-V from Win 10 LTSB 2016 client = "...could not access an expected WMI class..."

Trying to access Hyper-V running on Server 2012 R2 from Windows 10 LTSB 2016 and I only get an error:

The Hyper-V Management Tools could not access an expected WMI class on computer....

Same server accessed from Windows 8.1 H-V Management Tools is working fine.

Anybody any idea?

According to this it should be no issue

Configuration with two NICs on Hyper-V host

There are two physical NICs in Hyper-V host. I want one NIC dedicated to the host, and the other to provide external network to two VMs. Would below be appropriate?

  • First NIC: assigning it the host IP, without using it for any Virtual Netorks
  • Second NIC: Create an External Network, along with a Microsoft Virtual Switch, and use it to provide network services to the VMs. Virtual NICs for the VMs would be associated with that External Network. A static IP would be assigned to the virtual switch of this adapter, and each VM would be assigned a static IP as well.

Alternatively am I better of teaming the two NICs?

Thanks

Trying to export then import existing VM - "encountered error during import operation"

Hello,

I'm very new to Hyper-V and have had the task of "cloning" an existing VM we have in use.  From the Hyper-V management console, I have successfully (i think) exported the VM that I want to replicate, but then receive the following unhelpful error message when walking through the 'Import Virtual Machine' wizard..

"Hyper-V encountered an error during import operation"

I receive this after walking through the entire wizard, selecting the VM to import (the one I exported), and selecting destinations for the new VM files.

Any help is greatly appreciated as this is a critical business and time sensitive issue for me.

Environment:

Windows 2012 R2

Exported and Imported VM all live on the same physical machine.

I have multiple VMs running on this machine and I have NOT turned off any of them during the import.  Everything is running.

hardware specs to virtualize a few servers

0
0

We have 2 server at our building and we would like to upgrade them to newer more recent machines.

Currently, Server1 is acting as the Domain Controller and Sage DB server. Server2 is the Terminal Server/RDS which usually have about 20-30 people online at once. What we like to do is split Server1 into 2 VM on a new machine, VM1 and VM2. We would also like to be able to convert Server2 into VM3 sometime later.

Here are the specs of the servers and their resource usage:

Server1 (DC+DB)

PowerEdge 2900 Windows Server 2003

Intel(R) Xeon(R) CPU 5130 @ 2.00GHz x1 (4C/4T total)

4GB RAM

Resource Usage: 30-60% CPU, 30-40% RAM

Server2 (TS/RDS)

PowerEdge R410 Windows Server 2008 R2

Intel(R) Xeon(R) CPU E5630 @ 2.53GHz x2 (8C/16T total)

32GB RAM

Resource Usage: 30%-60% CPU, 60-85% RAM

Seeing as we are able to run both the DC and DB role on a very old machine, I take it would be no problem to split the role and virtualize two VM on new machine with new OS. What if I add the TS to the VM as well, would it be able to handle the load just fine?

What specs are the minimum and recommended to handle just the DC and DB virtual machine? And what specs are the minimum and recommended to handle all 3 as virtual machines? This will all be on WS2016. Please include processor, memory, hard drive types, and raid configuration, and any other information. Thanks

How to add a Hyper-V Virtual Switch on Server 2012 R2 w/ already-teamed NICs

0
0

Can someone help me understand how to add an external Virtual Switch?

I have a single server domain using Server 2012 R2 and the server is already configured with dual NICs, teamed using Aggregation. I just added Hyper-V, but when I add an external Virtual Switch using the already-teamed NIC (withAllow management OS to share this network adapter checked), the host server loses LAN connectivity. When I remove the new Virtual Switch, connectivity is restored. Evidently, there's an incompatibility that I'm not understanding.

I'm wondering if the problem is that my dual NICs were teamed prior to adding Hyper-V and the Virtual Switch?

Perhaps I need to un-Team the dual NICs and then configure Teaming from w/in the Hyper-V Manager wizard?

Note: I don't want 1 NIC dedicated to the host and the 2nd NIC dedicated to VMs. I prefer having the 2 physical NICs teamed for aggregation and then shared between the host and the VMs. Unless that won't work?

Hyper-V 2016 failed to enable replication for virtual machine

I'm getting the following error when trying to enable VM replication between two 2016 Hyper-V clusters.

Hyper-V failed to enable replication for virtual machine 'COMPUTERNAME': The request is not supported. (0x80070032). (Virtual machine ID 7EC7A8F2-EC76-41AB-B9BD-B6464DFF81AA)

This also creates an error event in the Microsoft-Windows-Hyper-V-VMMS/Admin log of 32000.

This is a new setup which hasn't had replication enabled before.
