Virtual Switch Backup

Hi All,

I'm planning to configure a backup solution for hyper-V VM's. I have tried to backup hyper-V host configuration details like virtual switch details, VM's, etc using in inbuilt windows system backup. But it fails to backup hyper-V virtual switch configuration details.

Is there any way to backup my virtual switch configuration details along with VM's?

Hyper-V Replication Failover testing has caused strange Microsoft Virtual Disks to be created - how to safely delete?

$

Hello,

I was experimenting with the Hyper-V "Planned Failover" functionality, from a primary VM to its replica on another machine.  One of the tests I did was doing a Planned failover, canceling the planned failover, and then removing replication altogether.  I'm not 100% sure if this is the cause of what I'm seeing, but it seems the most likely.

What I'm seeing is these mysterious F and G drives, which I AM 100% sure are not actual physical disks:

The size of the G: drive is EXACTLY the size of the virtual machine hard disk that I was testing in the Planned Failover testing I mentioned prior.

The virtual machine in question is safely running on another machine, and I have deleted the virtual machine replica from this machine (Using the Delete Virtual Machine functionality in the main Hyper-V management screen), but the virtual hard disk still is hanging around - I can't delete it.  It's in the default Hyper-V replicas folder, and this is what I get when I try to delete it (it's a virtual dynamically expanding disk that has 35 GB of content, but has a set max size of 127 GB):

looking in the Server File and Storage Services section, which I'm not terribly familiar with, I see this:

Same picture, but cropped for better resolution in browser

How do I safely delete the F and G volumes, and delete the currently undeletable .VHDX file?  And does anybody know what causes this nonsense to happen?

HI,

I have 1 FC storage, 3 servers and want to create 8 VMs. I want to use Hypver V clustering. can anybody guide me about storage allocation (e.g Should i allocated storage to servers and then create VMs on it or any idea) so that in case of a server failure VMs should move to another servers.

let me tell you i dont have VMM. can i manage movement of VMs to best possible server in case of failover.

hello Server Gurus,

Is there a way to run the Device Manager remotely from my Win10 Client on the Hyper-V 2016 Core host ? The Hyper-V is in a Workgroup and not domained-joined. I read a few conflicting blogs about this feature. If it is not possible are there any alternatives ?

Thank you

Imported VM shuts down when restarting from VM OS

$

Hi,

I recently made two VMs. First one I installed from ISO image (Server 2016 eval).
Then I exported the installed and imported it by copy method (Generating new ID)

Now I noticed that when I click the restart button from the imported VMs OS the VM starts stopping the services and it says restarting.... But it shuts it down when it should be starting.
If I go to CMD and enter "shutdown -r -f -t 0" the restart is ok and nothing wrong seems to happen.

On my Win10 Host computer there are error events at the time of supposed reboot.

  • These are translated so it may not be exact english versions:
Source Microsoft-Windows-Hyper-V-Worker event id 3502 description is not found...
The event was included the next information:
    <VM Name>
    <VM ID>
    %%2147942402
    0x80070002

Wanted message language resource is not found.
  • Target <VM Name> could not initialized again (Virtual ID: <VM ID>)

No other problems are not seen yet and there is no errors but these in the host event log.

Two suggestions for additional features/functionality in Hyper-V

Bitlocker for Hyper-V

  1. Include a virtual TPM (v 2.0) in the Hypervisor
  2. Create a private key for the vm with the creation of the VM
  3. Use a vfd as a vault for the key, make the vfd hidden
  4. Install a ‘secure’ b-drive in the vm config, hidden from the guest os
  5. List the vfd in the vm config file as loaded in the b-drive
  6. Use the key to sign the vm config file
  7. Use the key as the root of the trust chain for the vm’s bitlocker implementation
  8. Optional, include boot pin/password, etc. on the vfd and/or enable efs on the vfd

To successfully access a copied bitlocked vhd, one would have to copy the entire vm, including the hidden vfd.

To make the vhd mountable on a pm or another vm, use bitlocker-on-the-go instead of regular bitlocker on the vm’s vhd.

This solution is portable at the vm level while preserving security at the file level. Also using a vfd as a vault allows access control to be extended to host level rbac.

USB access for guest OS

Incorporate USB over Ethernet into Hyper-V

  1. Include a USBoE Server with the Hypervisor
  2. The USBoE Server creates an Ethernet circuit (via VLAN or PPPoE) per published USB port.
  3. USBoE Server publishes listing and circuits via selected internal or external network.
  4. Include the USBoE Client in integration services
  5. Add a dedicated synthetic network adapter for USBoE in the configuration - if it can be done, with the USBoE client, make it all look like a virtual usb controller to the guest os
  6. In VM settings, after enabling the USBoE adapter select the network to subscribe to, then select from the available listed circuits the ports to access
  7. In the VM, the guest OS will then be able to communicate with a connected device.

Between the USBoE Server, USBoE VM Setting, and the USBoE Client the USBoE circuit integrity will be insured and maintained.

Localhost use of published ports can be done via the internal network adapter and an embedded USBoE Client and being able to reserve/exclude published circuits in Hyper-V settings.

Using external network adapters allows the publishing and/or subscription of USB ports on USBoE enabled remote hosts.

Hyper-V Network Config with HPE Virtual Connect

Hi,

I am looking at configuring networking for a Hyper-V 2016 environment using HPE Blades with Virtual Connect. Has anyone got any advice on the Virtual Connect config.

Are people just presenting 2 x 10GB nics and using converged networking with vNics or presenting more nics from Virtual Connect and splitting them out into a VM network, Live Migration / Cluster network and management network?

Thanks.

Hi.

im trying to migrate a vm from a 2012 r2 host to a new 2016 host i get the following error

move-vm : Virtual machine migration operation failed at migration destination.
The virtual machine 'Windows Server 2012 R2 Standard Template Master' is not compatible with physical computer 'XXXXX'.
The operation cannot be performed because the object is not in a valid state.

i tried with the vm offline and it doesnt  work anyway.

i tried to disconnect the vm's nic and then it seems to work. the virtual switch is named the same on both hosts.

i tried to use the vm-compare to see if i could get the reason for the incompatibility but it doesnt seeem to work between to different hyperv versions

anyone whe can shread som light into this.

Error when trying to attach USB Hard Drive to Virtual Machine

$

Hello,

Since about 4 months ago, we are having trouble when trying to connect a USB drive to our virtual machines.

We have 2 Dell PowerEdge R430 servers with Windows Server 2012 and Hyper-V installed, when I connect a USB Drive while the physical machine is running, I can't attach the USB drive to the virtual machines, for it to work I need to restart the physical machine with the USB drive already plugged in, after doing this I can connect the USB drive to the virtual machine again, but, if for some reason I unplug and plug it again, it shows me this error:

NOTE: I was going to insert an image here, but Technet wouldn't allow me, because it says my account is not verified, so I've uploaded it to: h t t p s : //s14.postimg.org/hwk41jykx/1471635468078_remmina_2016_12_2_19_27_55_491706.png

As you can see in the above screenshot, the disk is set Offline at Disk Management and I'm using Physical Disk Option at SCSI section in Hyper-V manager, this used to work before, but it started occuring this error at some point that I don't remember, maybe after any update, I can't say for sure.

This same error also occurs at the other server, which is equal to this one, but with different virtual machines.

I couldn't find any details on event viewer, so I can't figure out the reason for this error.

Please help, we use to change the backup media every week and it's obviously nonsense to reset the physical server once a week, every time we have to exchange the disk.

Let me know if you need any more details.

Sorry for the poor english.

Virtual TPM never locks out

$

Hi there.

Let me report a problem with the vTPM.

Software used: Hyper-V of Server 2016 datacenter (updated) and win10 1607 as guest machine.

Expected behavior: the virtual TPM would lockout if 32 bad PIN attempts are detected.

Observed behavior: After 32 attempts, you just need to reboot the machine and you have 32 new attempts, a lockout simply never happens.

Please investigate, this is quite dangerous.

--

Furthermore, the same problem happens if win10 1607 is used both as hyper-v host and guest.

Also, the cmdlet get-tpm notices that the lockout counter is rising if we execute, say, 5 incorrect entries and displays those, but the number gets reset to zero if we reboot the system. And no, this is not due to "self healing".

How do I install the latest .net framework from Windows Hyper-V's command line?

$

Hi,

I am new to Windows Servers. I rented a dedicated server that came with the option of installing Windows Hyper-V at no additional cost. The installed version is Windows Hyper-V Server 2012 R2 (64bits)

When I remote desktop connect to it, I see only two command line windows open: a regular command line, opened as Administrator, with Windows Powershell capabilities. And a Server Configuration command line window. No GUI, no Start button, nothing else.

I tried to install the latest version of UniTrends Free, and it told me that I needed to first install the 3.5 version of the .NET framework.

I was able to download that version of .NET framework to my local computer, but I have no idea how to upload it to the server. Nor do I have any idea how to download it from Microsoft's web site directly to the server.

Civilized operating systems such as Linux have the curl command which enable their happy users to download packages directly from the internet by supplying the URL of where to find such packages. Is there such an option in Windows Hyper-V Server 2012 R2 ?

If not, what options to I have ?

I watched one introductory video on YouTube about Hyper-V, but the presenter starts by showing the Server Manager GUI. I don't seem to have that. I typed ServerManager in the command line mentioned above, but I got an error message indicating that Windows did not recognize such command.

Once again, please keep in mind that I am using a free version of Windows Hyper-V Server 2012 R2 (64bits)

The same company that I got my dedicated server from charges $25/month for a standard Windows Server 2012 edition, but is not charging me anything (other than my sanity) for the version that I have.

Thanks in advance.

Hello Everyone!

Just asked myself and google if it would be possible to set up Hyper-V Replica between a Hyper-V Host running Windows Server 2012 R2 and a Hyper-V Host running Windows Server 2016... did not find a good answer though.

Does someone know the answer?

Thanks,

Basic Question on Hyper-V Cloning

$
0
0

I have been tasked with deploying Windows 10 on Hyper-V on Windows 10 Enterprise for a small group of testers to use to test Office 365 environments. I ma fairly new at this.

My predecessor had created a USB drive which contained the following:

1.  Windows 7 Base Image (sysprepped)

2.  An unattend.xml file

3.  An Executable that basically starts Batch Script which in turn starts a PowerShell script.

4.  A folder containing a PowerShell and Batch script

The PowerShell script is pretty great:

It does a bunch of checks (usb drive name, proper cred's, windows 10 installed, verifies naming scheme with company policies) before checking for hyper-v and turning that on if missing.  It then creates a modified version of the pc name based on computer script is run on and adds VM.  Then is copies the template hard drive (#1 above) and the unattend.xml.  It then adds the user credentials provided by user to the unattend.  Next it mounts the hard drive and copies the modified unattend, and then dismounts drive.  A virtual switch is created, the hard drive is renamed according to naming standards, and the vm is created and started.  It works really, really well for the Windows 7 image.

I am trying to convert this to do the exact same thing for Windows 10 and having issues.

I have a VM that is set up like I want and I sysprep it. I need to copy a VHDX file, but it seems to me that a avhdx file is created.

Where is the basic directions for doing this located?

Hyper-v cluster: SMB 3.0 vs LUNs

Ownership of cluster disk 'Quorum Disk' has been unexpectedly lost by this node

Hi

2 fysical hosts running Windows 2012r2 with all windows updates/hyper-v patches.

Today i updated both host servers with newer broadcom nic drivers. 2 nics are used to iSCSI and 4 nics for all other hyper-v traffic. Before updating the first server, i drained all rules, so the second server had all guests running.

Updated nic drivers, rebooted, undrained all roles and then drained the second host server. Same procedure.

After both hosts was updated with new nic drivers and running normally, I noticed all my guest (both windows and linux) had rebooted. Just like if i did a hard reset from hyper-V.

This has not happened before, where I live migrated machines.

Any idea why the below happened?

Host2 Eventlog when host1 server was paused:
Cluster node 'Host1' was removed from the active failover cluster membership. The Cluster service on this node may have stopped. This could also be due to the node having lost communication with other active nodes in the failover cluster. Run the Validate a Configuration wizard to check your network configuration. If the condition persists, check for hardware or software errors related to the network adapters on this node. Also check for failures in any other network components to which the node is connected such as hubs, switches, or bridges.

Ownership of cluster disk 'Quorum Disk' has been unexpectedly lost by this node. Run the Validate a Configuration wizard to check your storage configuration.

Cluster resource 'Quorum Disk' of type 'Physical Disk' in clustered role 'Cluster Group' failed.

The Cluster service failed to bring clustered role 'Cluster Group' completely online or offline. One or more resources may be in a failed state. This may impact the availability of the clustered role.

Clustered role 'Cluster Group' has exceeded its failover threshold.  It has exhausted the configured number of failover attempts within the failover period of time allotted to it and will be left in a failed state.  No additional attempts will be made to bring the role online or fail it over to another node in the cluster.  Please check the events associated with the failure.  After the issues causing the failure are resolved the role can be brought online manually or the cluster may attempt to bring it online again after the restart delay period.

NO SAN HyperV Clustering Option

$

Greetings-

We have a great opportunity to setup a clean HyperV environment.

Our IOPS are very low but we need High Availability and don't want the expense and overhead of a SAN.

We have 3 Dell R630 Servers with dual 14 core CPU, 128 GB RAM and we are ready to install whatever is needed in the 8 Drive Slots in these machines.

Here is the current DPAC Survey:

Disk Throughput 340 MB/s

IOPS 3383 at peak, 2386 at 95%

Read/Write Ratio 93% / 7%

Total Local Capacity 34.76 TB

Free Local Capacity, Used Local Capacity 24.40 TB (70%), 10.36 TB (30%)

Total Shared Capacity 0 GB Free Shared Capacity,

Used Shared Capacity 0 GB (100%), 0 GB (0%)

Total Cores 101 Total Processors 35

What should we do and if/how can we do this using local storage and possibly a robust backup strategy?

Thanks
