Live, Quick and Storage Migration

$

Hello!

Can someone help me understand the differences between the three different forms of migration - from the standpoint of requirements?

I've been reading on TechNet;

  • https://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ff715313%28v=ws.10%29.aspx?f=255&MSPPError=-2147217396
  • https://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/hh831656

and it appears that both Live and Quick migrations require Fail Over Clustering to be installed, whereas Storage Migration's only requirement is that the disk to migrate isn't a physical disk.

Is the above summation true? If not, what are the requirements for each flavor?

Unable to connect RDP for Hyper-v Host windows 2012 Servers

Hi

Currently i am facing an strange issue. detail as follows.

1. 5 Physical server join to host windows hyper-v 2012 fail over cluster & over that all hyper-v Vm are hosted. all 5 server are connected with SAN switch to SAN storage. network is connected with Virtual connect switch.

2.  On my daily routine to health check i will do RDP to any of the 5 servers and see the failover cluster  status & hosted Vms.

3. in case of issue, initially i will be not to connect fail over cluster on any server, saying one of the host server from 5 server are not available, ( target computer is not accessible Ex:Server 5 from server management ).

4. i will try to connect through RDP to server 5. it will not work.  Ping will work, vm that are running on server 5 will work.

5. when i tried to connect it from HP iLo it will open the session, but unable to click Ctrl+Alt+Delete. hangup.

6. i have to hit hard restart to server, then it boots and joins to cluster normally & work again for week or 10 days.

7. The above issue is random on all 5 physical server.

8. i have check event log no events, i dont know what is causing the physical server to remove from failover cluster 2012.

9. And i am not sure either is windows configuration problem or Hardware problem.

can any one help me out to sort of this issue.

thank you

Hi

I just installed windows 8.1 on my laptop but when I want to connect to the internet through WIFI or Ethernet cable, the browser says you are offline. I tried chrome, safari, IE, waterfox and etc. but none of them worked and they all displayed the same problem. so I decided to troubleshoot the network by windows wizard but after that this message occurred: website(www.microsoft.com) is online but isn't responding to connection attempts.

I just should add that none of my other devices face this problem and also this computer worked properly with windows 10.
please help!

Recommended Action
1. Ensure HyperVCluster.MGMT.COM is online and not blocked by a firewall.
2. Ensure that file and printer sharing is enabled on HyperVCluster.MGMT.COM and it not blocked by a firewall.
3. Ensure that WMI is enabled on HyperVCluster.MGMT.COM and it is not blocked by firewall.
4. Ensure that there is sufficient free space on the system volume.
5. Verify that the ADMIN$ share on HyperVCluster.MGMT.COM exists. If the ADMIN$ share does not exist, reboot HyperVCluster.MGMT.COM and then try the operation again.

Warning (10444)
The VMM management server was unable to impersonate the supplied credentials.

Recommended Action
To add a host in a disjointed domain namespace, ensure that the credentials are valid and of a domain account. In addition, the SCVMMService must run as the local system account or a domain account with sufficient privileges to be able to impersonate other users.

Those are below where I try so far but still not luck, I've install SCVMM in DNS machine and open without problem and able connect to other machine(non-cluster):

1. I've disable all firewall in both DNS server and cluster machine and register domain connection from cluster machine to DNS machine.

2. Create a share of C:\Windows (where C:\ProgramData) in cluster to allowed DNs write those settings on that folder.

Hopefully someone could help me upon this problem. Thanks a million.

Virtual Machine could not be started because the hypervisor is not running

Hi

I have installed Windows Server 2012 Standard Edition with a GUI. Default configuration, nothing special.

Whenever I want to turn on any machine inside of Hyper-V, the following error message appears:

"Virtual Machine could not be started because the hypervisor is not running"

Whenever this happens, I run the following command:

bcdedit /set hypervisorlaunchtype Auto

and reboot the Server. After a reboot, all Virtual Machines can be started without Problems. However, as soon as I shut down the Server instead of rebooting it, the Problem happens again and I need to enter the command again and reboot.

Now my question is how to solve this Problem. I never had this Issue with Windows Server 2008 R2, maybe there are some differences regarding the Hypervisor in Server 2012. How can I make sure the Hypervisor is always on, even after a Shutdown? Thanks in Advance

Trying to access Hyper-V running on Server 2012 R2 from Windows 10 LTSB 2016 and I only get an error:

The Hyper-V Management Tools could not access an expected WMI class on computer....

Same server accessed from Windows 8.1 H-V Management Tools is working fine.

Anybody any idea?

According to this it should be no issue

Virtual switch interferes with NIC

Hi

Windows Server 2016 Standard host. During adding hyper-v I chose to establish a virtual switch from the server's single NIC. After server is rebooted it turns out a number of features in the server's NIC are un-selected including IPV4. One effect is that server is inaccessible from outside.

My question is what is the problem here and what is the proper way to create a hyper-v to host Windows Server 2016 + Exchange 2016 so the hyper-v based setup (Windows Server + Exchange) gets good quality network connection?

Thanks

Move 2016 created Version 8.0 VM to 2012 R2 server? Is it possible?

I have one 2016 Hyper-V server that I created a VM on, as a result it is an 8.0 version. I then wanted to move it to another 2012 R2 server. I know migration won't work since it is unsupported version. I tried export and that didn't work since the VM config file is no longer old XML format. Is there anyway to export to old version or convert to allow import into 2012 R2 server? I got lulled into false sense of security due to portability on previous server versions of VM. Thanks.

Installing WS2012 R2 on vhdx hangs at: Setup is copying temporary files

Hello Community

    On Windows Server 2012 R2 I installed Hyper-V.

    After I created myserver.vhdx .

The problem is that when I try to install Windows Server 2012 R2
on myserver.vhdx I go to Hyper-V Manager, right click myserver.vhdx
and click connect.

    Next I go to:

        Hyper-V Manager
        right click Virtual Machine Name
        Connect

        Note: A message appears stating:

"boot failure. reboot and select proper boot device
or insert boot media in selected boot device "

    Next I click:

        Action
        Insert Integration Services Setup Disk
            and it says success

Next I click the cdrom drive and see:

        Windows Server 2012 R2
        Install Now

    Next I click
        Install Now
the hourglass appears and shows

"Setup is copying temporary files"

The problem is the install won't go any further
it just hangs here.

In short how can I get the Windows Server 2012 R2
to get past that message and finish installing?

Servers running out of space due to .AVHD file

Hello all,

I require some assistance from you guys as I am out of ideas.. I have a Hyper V Server running multiple Windows servers. randomly throughout the day I have some servers which are getting paused with the description of "Running out of space". I realised that there is a .avhd attached and I will have to reboot the server to merge the snapshot so that the server is back online. I do not have any snapshot settings attached to the servers and they range from 2008R2 to 2012R2. There is also Hyper-v replica between two physical servers.

Any experience on this as I am truly lost.

Many thanks

Hyper-V, Multiple Subnets & VLANs

Afternoon all,

I've read so many articles on the issue we're having where I work and I can't seem to get it working regardless - even with outside help from various parties. So let me give you the details, we have 2 hosts with clustered storage. Each host is running a selection of VMs for various purposes. With the changes we're having, we're building a brand new domain and this will sit on a new subnet at each site (we have 10). My first job was to create a physical test DC and get the new network working on it. I successfully managed this. However, when I came to using a Virtual DC - this is where the problem lies. So here's how things are laid out:

Live DC
- IP Subnet: 192.168.xx.xx
- VLAN1

Test/New DC
- IP Subnet: 172.16.xx.xx
- VLAN 5

So the VLANs are all set up and working on the router and switch, no problems there so the issue must lie within the VM/Host. When I create the VM and assign a static IP from the new subnet, I have no network connectivity.

I have tried the following:
- Creating a new NIC Team and specifying the interface as VLAN5
- Creating a new interface on the existing team, specified for VLAN5
- Setting VLAN ID in the Hyper V Settings and in the Virtual Switch Manager

I also read an article that mentioned changing registry setting for the network adapters, along with making sure 'Priority & VLAN' is Enabled on the drivers. I have checked on this and all is set up as the article on here says it should be!

What have I missed?

Thanks in advance,
Chris

NTFS VS. REFS

Hello everybody,

When using an external SAN (Such as NetApp or EMC) with Hyper-V 2016 - Is there a clear reccomendation to use REFS instead of NTFS? Are there any support issues we should be concerned about? Are there any clear guidelines from Microsoft about this?

Thanks is advance to all the repliers.

Server 2016 VM Hangs shutting down/restarting when the Pagefile is on a different VHDX.

Howdy,

We are working on creating some VMs running 2016 for testing.  Our normal setup for our 2012 R2 machines is a C drive (OS), D Drive (Data), and P Drive (Pagefile).  This has never caused us any issues.  When I set this same thing up on our Server 2016 VMs we run into problems where the VM wont' shut down or restart once we move the Pagefile to P.

To do so I set C & D to No Pagefile and P to System Managed.  The first reboot usually works OK but after that when we try to restart or shutdown we just get to a plain blue background with the words "Shutting down" or "Restarting" and it never moved.  I tried restarting one last Thursday and was off Friday.  I checked it this morning and it still said Restarting...

There is no crash or error or anything and I just have to power it off through the Hyper-V itself.  The VMs always boot back up OK and Event Viewer doesn't show anything except all the various things entered the Stopped State just before the hang.

As soon as I put the Pagefile back on C all the problems fo away and I can shut down and restart all I want with no issues.

Anyone run into this by change or have any ideas what the problem might be?

Windows Server 2016 Hyper-V does not has Integration setup disc VMGUEST.ISO

I started to work on my server migration project 10 days ago.  For the best result, I converted the physical server into virtual machine first, then migrate it to the new Windows Server 2016 Standard (with desktop GUI).  The old server is Windows Server 2008 domain controller.  After I copy the VHD and set up as virtual machine in the Windows Server 2016.  In Hyper-V Manager, after I started up and login the server, there is no "Insert Hyper-V Integration Service Disc" option in Action menu.  I search but not found C:\Windows\System32\vmguest.iso .  All Windows updates are applied as of today, included KB3206632 (Dec 2016). I set up another Windows 2016 Server with Hyper-V role, the result is the same.

Since the virtual machine is Windows Server 2008 domain controller, I cannot start it up successfully without install the Integration Service disc.  At the end, I re-installed the computer with Windows Server 2012R2 with Hyper-V to do the migration.

RemoteFX on Client Hyper-V Windows 10 Pro with Windows 7 Guest

Hi all,

What I'm trying may not feasible, but I thought I'd ask here in a last ditch effort. I've exhaustively searched everywhere for a solution to my problem, but nothing has worked for me.

For some background:

Host OS: Windows 10 Pro

I've installed all the Hyper-V components and Configured RemoteFX for the Hyper-V Manager as well as the Guest OS.

Guest OS: Windows 7 Pro SP1

Guest OS has been updated to with RDP 8.1 protocol support.

I'm able to remote in fine without RemoteFX device installed on the Guest VM.

When I install it and reboot, RDP hangs on `Estimating Connection Quality` and then I receive this error:

"The remote session was disconnected because there were network problems during the licensing protocol."

I have tried multiple installs and many different suggestions by others with similar issues to no avail.

Experience settings are set to `Lan/10Mb/s` etc..

I've installed the latest version of the integration tools.

It appears to work correctly with a Windows 10 Guest OS, but I'm needing to use Windows 7 in this scenario.

From what I've read, this configuration SHOULD work.

Can anyone shed some light or at least point me in the right direction?

Much Appreciated!

Edit: I just realized this should probably be in the Windows 10 Virtualization Subforum -- I'm not sure if I can move the thread.

Hyper-V Replication error after upgrading to Windows Server 2016 ("Access denied

$

I have a Hyper-V test environment with two Hyper-V hosts. Each Hypver-V machine hosts a few virtual machines and both hosts are replicating the virtual machines to each other.

This setup was running just fine with no errors on Windows Server 2012 R2. To test we upgraded both machines to Windows Server 2016. The upgrade itself was running without causing any issues. But now the replication - which was working just fine - did stop working. All VMs report a Replication Health state of critical as no replecation cycle runs successfully.

When resuming the replication I see three errors in the event log:

  • Replication operation for virtual machine 'vm1' failed. (Virtual machine ID xxxxxxxx-xxxx-xxxx-xxxx-xxxxxxxxxxxx) (Primary server: 'm1.dom.local', Replica server: 'm2.dom.local')
  • Hyper-V suspended replication for virtual machine 'vm1' due to a non-recoverable failure. Resume replication after correcting the failure. (Virtual machine ID xxxxxxxx-xxxx-xxxx-xxxx-xxxxxxxxxxxx)
  • The description for Event ID 32022 from source Microsoft-Windows-Hyper-V-VMMS cannot be found. Either the component that raises this event is not installed on your local computer or the installation is corrupted. You can install or repair the component on the local computer.
  • If the event originated on another computer, the display information had to be saved with the event. The following information was included with the event:
    vm1
    xxxxxxxx-xxxx-xxxx-xxxx-xxxxxxxxxxxx
    %%2147942402
    0x80070002

When enabling a new replica of a VM Hyper-V shows these errors:

Hyper-V failed to enable replication.
Replica Server failed to authorize the connection.

Hyper-V failed to enable replication for virtual machine 'vm2': General access denied error (0x8007005). (Virtual machine ID xxxxxxxx-xxxx-xxxx-xxxx-xxxxxxxxxxxx)

Replica server 'host2' failed to authorize the connection. Check replica server for appropriate access permissions.

What irritates me the most is that general nature of these errors, remember everything was working until after the upgrade to Windows Server 2016.

Does anybody know of any needed configuration changes when upgrading Hyper-V hosts from Windows Server 2012 R2 to Windows Server 2016?

Any help is highly appreciated.

Markus
