to big disk queue during resize or creating VHD

Hi.

I Have hyper-v on windows 2012 R2, witch storage pool (4 disk) na 20 TB thin provisioned volume with deduplication.

On that volume i have one 8TB vhdx file (fixed size). When I try resize that vhdx disk  i got disk queue (on that volume) at about 5-7 with 100% disk activity, and after several minutes i got Event ID 15282 (Filed to resize the virtual disk) and ID 27294.

Its any possibility to limit disk I/O impact during creating or resizing vhd(x) file ? Because looks like the errors occurred when disk queue becomes too high.

Hi,

I have a dynamic vhdx iSCSI share. I gave it more space than the container partition have and it reached the size of the parent. Now I can't connect to it using iSCSI neither attach the vhd. Disk managemtn and diskpart gave me an error 'Incorrect function'. Is there any way to repair it and get back the data?

Hello!

I'm using Windows 2016 DC for hyper-v. Hosts are joined to domain and clustered.

I don't use SCVMM. I would like manage permissions to VM's, host, etc with Authorization Manager but I'm not able to findProgramData\Microsoft\Windows\Hyper-V\InitialStore.xml. Can I use Authorization Manager in my case ? Where can I find this config file ?

Thanks for advices!

Error when trying to attach USB Hard Drive to Virtual Machine

Hello,

Since about 4 months ago, we are having trouble when trying to connect a USB drive to our virtual machines.

We have 2 Dell PowerEdge R430 servers with Windows Server 2012 and Hyper-V installed, when I connect a USB Drive while the physical machine is running, I can't attach the USB drive to the virtual machines, for it to work I need to restart the physical machine with the USB drive already plugged in, after doing this I can connect the USB drive to the virtual machine again, but, if for some reason I unplug and plug it again, it shows me this error:

NOTE: I was going to insert an image here, but Technet wouldn't allow me, because it says my account is not verified, so I've uploaded it to: h t t p s : //s14.postimg.org/hwk41jykx/1471635468078_remmina_2016_12_2_19_27_55_491706.png

As you can see in the above screenshot, the disk is set Offline at Disk Management and I'm using Physical Disk Option at SCSI section in Hyper-V manager, this used to work before, but it started occuring this error at some point that I don't remember, maybe after any update, I can't say for sure.

This same error also occurs at the other server, which is equal to this one, but with different virtual machines.

I couldn't find any details on event viewer, so I can't figure out the reason for this error.

Please help, we use to change the backup media every week and it's obviously nonsense to reset the physical server once a week, every time we have to exchange the disk.

Let me know if you need any more details.

Sorry for the poor english.

Using ubuntu cloud images with Hyper-V

I am using server 2012r2 DC with hyper-v for almost all of my virtualization and i use a mix of windows and linux based systems on Hyper-v, but it is a hassle to have to go through the lengthy install process when setting up ubuntu or centos on Hyper-V, with my kvm systems i can just spin up a vm using a cloud image and be on my way in a few seconds, is there a way to do this with Hyper-V?, if so could someone guide me to the documentation on how to do this?

VM settings failed to add device physical disk drive

Hello,

Server 2012 R2 using Hyper-V manager; have previously been able to add external USB hard drive to the host, make the external drive offline, then use the VM settings to add the external drive to a VM machine.

Just recently (last two weeks) I cannot add the external drive through the settings, get this error message:
'VM-ABC-EXCH16' failed to add device 'Physical Disk Drive'. (Virtual machine ID 37C70A3A-737E-478D-984F-32FA86349308)

In the event viewer that message appears as 14140.

Tested upon different VMs and also a different host with different VMs, also different external hard drives (and external drive works fine on local computer).  Nothing will attach.  As noted, this has worked in the past.  What can I do to resolve?

Thanks

Always having to reset the Hyper-V Virtual Ethernet Adapter

Windows Sever 2012 running Hyper-V with about 10 virtual machines running for remote access

Quad NIC system (but only using 1 NIC) - static IP and the virtual ethernet (for the hyper-v environment)

Client has Comcast Internet (Deluxe plan which is 50mbps down / 10mbps up)

I have anywhere from 17-22 users internally using the Internet for work.  I have 3-4 remote users connected via persistent VPN all day (doing RDP to their remote computer (they hyper-v system)).

On any given day, the Internet will drop it's connection anywhere from 10-60 seconds and come back to life.  I know this because I'm monitoring the connection every 5 seconds and I'll get alerts if it goes down.

This is causing issues for my remote users.  They will get disconnected and unable to reconnect.  Thus far, I only have 2 band-aid solutions I've been using:  Have the remote users restart their router and reconnect (this works about 80% of the time, but that's a hassle).

My other "fix" is on my 2012 Server.  And I have to reset some of the NIC cards (disable/enable).

When I look at the Network Connections, I see 5 NIC cards:  NIC1, 2, 3, 4, and my vEthernet (new virtual switch).

NIC1 is the main NIC with a static IP.
NIC2 says enabled but used with the virtual environment.
NIC3 and 4 (network cable unplugged and I don't use those NICs).
Then I have the vEthernet (New Virtual Switch)

I basically go in and disable NIC2 and the vEthernet.  Then I re-enable NIC2 and then the vEthernet (in that order too).

Then my remote users can reconnect.

Why does it do that?  Can I use NIC3 or 4 as a fail-over possibly?  If so, how?  I've experimented with this (drop the connection for 10-20 seconds) and try to RDP into a virtual machine (which is unsuccessful).  once I disable/enable the NIC cards, everything works.  Why would a 10-60 second outage cause this?  And this happens almost daily.  Sometimes 2x's a day.

Comcast claims it is because of the Intenet speeds we have - we're maxed out (and the upload speed just can't handle 3-4 remote users and all that overhead with VPN) so they are telling me to upgrade their speeds to something around 100mbps to 150mbps down / 20 up.  That could solve the problem, but I'd like to find the root cause before upgrading the entire Internet for the client (unless the speed issue is the bottleneck root cause).

Any thoughts on this?  Thanks in advance for your replies.

How to Create a Windows 10 Template in Hyper-V

I apologize, but I am a total noob on this subject.  I have Hyper-V enabled on my Windows 10 Enterprise box.  I imported a Virtual PC that has the Base Image of Windows 10 that we use.  I am trying to sysprep so I can deploy onto other windows 10 laptops with a custom name.  Every time I run sysprep, the image stops working.  Google is not giving me the most solid results.  I am only on the job a few months, and still figuring out where everything is.  My predecessor left me zero documentation and I have never had the opportunity to do this in the past.  Need some guidance.

Goal is to

1.  Automate Enable Hyper-V (Can be done through powershell)

2. Copy over the sysprepped image and rename.

I did find a USB stick with all of this done for Windows 7 and it runs pretty well from there.  I tried substituting the vhd files from Windows 7 to 10 but it keeps failing.  I think the answer file is incorrect so wanted to start from scratch.

Any help appreciated!

How EXACTLY does Hyper-V Host Resource Protection in WS 2016 work?

$
0
0

Everytime I tell My students about this Feature, I can't explain them how this feature works -

How does the algorithm work? At which values? How can I prevent false positives?

This feature helps prevent a virtual machine from using more than its share of system resources by looking for excessive levels of activity. This can help prevent a virtual machine's excessive activity from degrading the performance of the host or other virtual machines. When monitoring detects a virtual machine with excessive activity, the virtual machine is given fewer resources. This monitoring and enforcement is off by default. Use Windows PowerShell to turn it on or off. To turn it on, run this command:

Set-VMProcessor -EnableHostResourceProtection $true

Hyper-V Server 2016 Live Migration

Hi guys,

Maybe you can help me with this.

Just upgraded my lab from 2012 R2 to 2016 Hyper-V (cluster). I have 2 Hyper-V 2016 HV1/HV2 and 1 management machine M1 (Windows 10). Upgrade was completed with no issues.

Issue: Before upgrade Live migration was working with no issues (i have 1 VM on local HDD on one of the hosts). Now if i want to migrate the VM in question from one host to other one is failling with "No credentials are available in thesecurity package (0x8009030E)" giving the fact that Constrained Delegation is in place. I perform this operation from M1 machine.

I had no issues on Hyper-V 2012 R2. I have latest RSAT.

Tahnk you.

Would like to convert differncing disk to fixed disk in Server 2016 Hyper-V

$

Server is 2016 Standard w/ Hyper-V role.

Using Dell Appasure (Now Quest Rapid Restore) backup/imaging software I had to convert a physical server which failed to a VM.  Essentially performing a physical to virtual conversion with "virtual standby" tools inside of Rapid Restore.

VM came online fine and all is running well, but I noticed the system disk and data disk of the VM are both dynamic with differencing disks being used.  The disk properties of the VM for system and data both point to separate differencing disks.

I would like to convert these disks to just fixed disks but am not sure how to proceed.  I've searched and found a few articles but still not clear on how to accomplish this and worried I may lose changes or data saved in the differencing disk in the process.

I also need to expand the data disk which I'm assuming I can do after converting to fixed.

Any help or pointers to resources is much appreciated.

Thanks in advance for any help.

Is it simply shutting down the vm and choosing each disk in settings and the edit / convert to fixed?

hyper-v issue: Mouse pointer invisible in Linux Mint 17 (run in hyper-v of windows 10)

Hi everyone:

my problem is, after I installed the Linux mint 17 in windows 10 hyper-v, the mouse was invisible in the guest OS (Linux Mint 17). While the mouse really works, I can click the buttons in the guest OS, it's just invisible. anyone know what happened? I've tried to download the Hyper-v Linux integration services and tried to install it in Linux Mint and failed to do it. The setting of hyper-v shows that all the "integration services" are offered except the "guest services".
