Going with RAID (Raid 1 for Hyper V Core OS and Raid 10 for VMs) What is the best stripe size for the Raid 10? VM's will be running Windows Server 2003 and 2008 mixing with Microsoft Exchange 2003, SQL 2005, Great Plains and acting as File server.

updates for 2012

Dear All,

I have an issue with Veaam replication on windows 2012 HyperV cluster. The issue is that CSV space usage is filling up every time replication that occurs. On Veeam forums they sugest the following updates to fix this issue. But these updates are available only for 2012 R2 and not for 2012, where can i find these updates for 2012?

Pass-Through vs VHDx as a second drive in VM.

$

We are planning the install of a shiny new server.

Two SSDs for host OS and six HDDs for storage. We have them set up to run in pairs and in a hardware RAID1 mirror for each pair. We plan to run Hyper-V machines for various functions.

One of the functions is two file servers for separate groups. The basic plan was one of the 1TB pairs be the VHDx hosts for the primary drives and in all VMs. Then the two additional 1TB pairs be set up as pass-through drives on 2 VMs.
So the host only has the SSDs and the 1 drive hosting the VHDs online.
Two VMs have a 60GB VHD as their OS drive (hosted on the drive above) and then have an additional 1TB pass-through drive for storing user file data.

Recently I've read a fair bit of information that says this is an old method because of speed overheads but VHDx resolves those. References to VSS Backups not possible from the host and the VM not being portable/replicable have been the biggest arguments against the use of a pass-through.

On the backups - The VM would have to do the backups anyway with a VHDx because the host only sees a VHDx, single file. Incremental nightly backups would attempt to backup the entire VHDx, at 600GB... This doesn't seem like a good idea.

On the portability - If something catastrophic happened, wouldn't it be faster to simply create a new VM (or restore from a previous backup or replica) and then just reattach the physical HDD again? Or moving the physical drive to another server (What server doesn't have hot-swap in the modern day) and recover from there. If a VHDx goes bad for whatever reason, it would be replicated over the RAID and you run the risk of losing everything.

I'm not saying I'm against going to VHDx running on the host machine attached to the VM, but I just want to make sure I am making the right choice with all the information.

What should I be considering when planning our server deployment?

Is it possible to display dual monitor VM on a subset of the monitors of the system that is used to connect to the VM ??

I am trying to configure a 911 dispatch console.  The dispatchers have one main application that they dispatch from and a bunch of peripheral applications that they use for support (think outlook, internet etc...).  We have had several instances where the peripheral applications have caused problems with the CAD (computer aided dispatch) software.  To prevent this, I am wanting to install a hyper-v virtual machine on the Windows 10 computer that is running the CAD software.  I will then load all the peripheral applications onto the virtual machine.

In order for the dispatchers to quickly see the information that they need, we have 6 displays connected to the physical computer via 2 NVidea NVS 510 video cards (3 monitors attached to each video card) which each contain 2GB of RAM..  We would like to have the virtual machine come up on two of those 6 and leave the other 4 for the CAD software.  However, I can run the virtual computer on all 6 monitors or only on 1, but not a subset of the 6.

I have added the RemoteFX 3D Video Adapter to the virtual machine and configured it with a maximum number of monitors = 2, set the max resolution to match the resolution of the monitors the VM will be displayed on and maxed out the memory.  When I attach to this VM with more than 2 monitors attached to the system I remotely connecting from, only one monitor comes up.  If I change the minimum number of monitors to the number of monitors attached to the computer I am remotely connecting from (6), the virtual machine comes up on all the displays as expected; however, this will not work as the dispatchers need to quickly see information on both the CAD software and the peripheral applications (VM system).

Can anyone confirm for me that this is a limitation of RDP/Hyper-V or if I have something configured incorrectly?  In other words, has anyone been successful in using RDP or another software (if so what) to connect to a virtual machine using a subset of the number of monitors on the system being used to access the VM?

As a side note, I have been testing with VirtualBox and I have been successful in getting this configuration to work but I would prefer to use Hyper-V for multiple reasons.

Thanks in advance for any assistance!/responses!

How to recover from a corrupted VHD file?

There is a tool that can recover logical problems in the VHD structure?

A friend called me and told me that his VS R2 Enterprise with 4 VMs suffered a power falure and after that, one of the VMs does not startup anymore. The erros is the same as using VHDMOUNT, something similar: "VHD file could not be mounted"

There is a CHKDSK for VHD files?

How to "rebuild" a corrupetd VHD file? How to analyze logical structure of a offline VHD file?

VM's getting stuck randomly when booting

I have Windows 10 Enterprise 1607 x64 machine that is running Hyper-V and few gen2 virtual machines (Server 2012 R2). Randomly when VM's are starting or rebooting they get stuck like in the picture (even the Hyper-V animation is stopped). CPU usage is always constant ¨25% when it's getting stuck. I can fix this simply powering of the VM and starting it again. Guest OS doesn't report any issues and it's not noticing the shutdown so I think it's not even booted yet.

Hello everyone

I have a server HP Proliant DL180 that has server 2012R2 and two virtual machines one of those virtual machine needs to be restarted every one or two days CPU reaches 99% I checked it and found that system idle process is consuming all the CPU resources so I need to restart it, after restart the virtual machine works properly until the system idle process reaches 99% I read an article that I need to reinstall integration services but it seems that we can't uninstall and reinstall it an idea or solution or something that I can do to find what causing this server to consume all the CPU resources

Server 2012 Hyper-V lost "NT Virtual Machine\Virtual Machines" permissions to "log on as a service"

$

We have a 2012 cluster environment running Hyper V. We have some machines that run fine on Cluster Node 1, but when we try to fail them over to other Cluster Nodes, they fail with error " Failed to create the planned virtual machine at migration destination. Logon Failure: the user has not been granted the requested logon type at this computer (0x80070569)"

In researching this problem, I have found the following article that explains how to fix this issue.

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2779204

However, when I attempt to add "NT Virtual Machine\Virtual Machines" accounts to my GPO's, it is unable to find the account name/group "Virtual Machines".

Does anyone have a detailed explanation of how this should be completed? Thanks.

what is the fastest hyper-V Replication with compression or without Compression Via Network 1Gb/sec

Hi ,

I configure the replication with compression  but the network utilization  of the initial replica about 25% of 1Gb/s . , it takes about 11 min for 33GB VHD size

I want To fasten the initial replica  what are your recommendation  to speed it up?

Question on Snapshots for hyper-V.

Hello,

We have one server on site for production and another server offsite that is replicated to the production box.   I've never played with snapshots before.   I'd like about a previous weeks copy of the production available at all times.   Is there a way to set up a snapshot to automatically wipe out the previous snapshot?    I don't have unlimited space and I don't need a snapshot that goes back months so I'd like it only to keep a snapshot from 7 days ago but always progressing forward.

Not sure if this is possible?

Cannot connect to Hyper-V VM via local Hyper-V Management console

System setup.

Hyper-V  installed on a Windows 2008 R2 SP1 Datacenter System with the latest patches applied. System has 512GB of RAM and 40 cores available.

The system had been working fine until I had issues rebooting the Hyper-V host server after applying Sep 2016's MS monthly patches.  I do have 3 other machines where these patches were applied and they do not have the issue.

When I highlight the local VM from within the Hyper-V Management interface I can see the status of the VM just fine.  However when I attempt to connect to the local VM and open up a 'Console' session I get the following error:

"Cannot connect to the virtual machine.  Try to connect again.  If the problem persists, contact your system administrator.  Would you like to try connecting again?"

If I try again I end back up to the same screen.  I have tried restarting the Hyper-V services, removing and reconnecting to the local server via the management console, doing a shutdown then starting the Hyper-V host and the problem still remains. I checked the Hyper-V logs on the Hyper-V host and the only error I saw listed in the events follows:

Server 2012 R2 Std - VM's flickering

$

Hello All,

We are running Hyper-V 2012 R2 Std edition with two VM's.  One is a Gen 1 that is running 2008 R2 and the other is a Gen 2 running 2012 R2 as the networks PDC.  In a nutshell here is what I am seeing on the host machine.  When in the Hyper-V Manager software and connected to either of these two VM's.  Over the past month, we have noticed the machines flicker off and back on sometimes losing the ability to use our mouse through these connections.

Interesting thing is that if we connect using RDP it appears that we do not have this issue.  I have looked all through the event logs and I do not see anything as far as what could be causing this issue.  I have uninstalled the AV (Webroot) on this server to see if it was something with Webroot causing the issue and the issue persisted.  I have turned off TCP Offloading as I have read in multiple <g class="gr_ gr_1294 gr-alert gr_spell gr_run_anim ContextualSpelling ins-del multiReplace" data-gr-id="1294" id="1294">fourms</g> that it has caused some odd things to happen.  The issue still persists.

Just curious if anyone else has noticed this type of behavior before and if so, what did you do to fix it?

Virtual Machine Management service is not available

$

A bit of context: I'm trying to run Docker on my Windows 10 (build 10586.104) machine. Whenever I do I get the following error in a Docker pop-up.

"Time out has expired and the operation has not been completed.

If you just enabled Hyper-V, please restart now."

This would be fine were it not for the fact that I have both enabled Hyper-V in Windows features, as well as in enabling Intel Virtualization and VT-d in my BIOS (i.e. all the virtualization related setting I have been able to find). I have also restarted my pc an estimated twenty times today.

This was starting to look like a Docker issue until I opened Hyper-V Manager (v. 10.0.10586.0), in which my virtual machine list is empty but for this message.

"The Virtual Machine Management service is not available."

Clicking Start Service does not seem to be do anything on the surface. However, if I open my Event Viewer, the following error pops up.

"The vmms service terminated with the following error:
The parameter is incorrect."

Which parameter it's talking about is, sadly, a complete mystery to me. The Details tab of the event includes the following.

"EventData

  param1 vmms
  param2 %%87
   76006D006D0073000000"

This is where I go off on a swath of Google-fueled wild goose chases, which I have tried to summarize.

- Open Services in Windows and start Virtual Disk > Virtual Disk started but had no effect on Hyper-V.
- 'bcdedit -set hypervisorlaunchtype off' in bash > Setting was toggled as expected but had no effect on Hyper-V.
- Disable and re-enable Hyper-V in Windows features > No effect.
- Disable and re-enable virtualization in BIOS > No effect.
- Update Windows > No effect.
- Throw up hands in despair and cry in a corner > Made me feel slightly better.

As far as I can tell something, somewhere is breaking down whenever I try to start a virtual machine with Hyper-V. Unfortunately I cannot for the life of my fathom what that something is.

Anyone have any insights to kickstart my investigation? Any pointers would be much appreciated.

Audit changes to VM's Hyper-V

Is there a way to view who made changes to a Hyper-V virtual machine? Such as adding a network, increasing RAM/CPU ect... I have poured through the advanced event logs under the Hyper-V section but I don't see these changes in  any of the log files.

We had an admin today increase the RAM and CPU on a machine but I can't seem to find any trace of those changes in the Hyper-V logs. There are some entries in the log but they are all mostly system tasks occurring in the background. This is for Windows 2012 and 2012 R2.

Am I missing something?  The end goal is to know who made changes to a VM and what thosechanges were.

VM not starting from a Saved State

Guys,

Thanks for reading this question and any support you can offer would be really appreciated as I have spent 3 days trying to work out how to resolve this.

I have a Virtual Machine on Hyper-V Server 2012 that is failing to start from a saved state. The error that I am receiving is:

The disk drive DISKST31000528AS is attached and I have checked in the BIOS, rechecked twice :-)

I just cannot work out what to do as I need to get this up and running urgently as there is data that needs to be taken off it and put onto our other server. I have tried to force stop the VM but it gives me a command cannot be run due to the VM state (or something).

Any help would be really appreciated .....

Thank you

Unable to move VM after iSCSI Target crashed

$

Dear Windows Server community

I am in the process of migrating my storage to a new volume on my Synology DS1515+. While migrating files (not iSCSI), the iSCSI Target crashed. The iSCSI Initiator on my Windows Server 2012 R2 showed the Target with the status "Reconnecting". After I rebooted the Synology NAS (had to force shutdown), all the iSCSI drives reconnected, but I can not move any machines from it to other volumes. I do the following:

  1. Open Hyper-V
  2. Select machine (on iSCSI drive No1) > Move
  3. Move the virtual machine's storage
  4. Move all of the virtual machine's data to a single location
  5. Browse for iSCSI drive No2
  6. Finish > The following Error message comes up:

There was an error during move operation.

Storage migration for virtual machine failed.

Operation not allowed because the replication state is not initialized.

I am not running a cluster or had to deal with replication before, just one machine hosting multiple VMs and storing them on two iSCSI drives. I was able to move all the other machines exactly the same way. Does anybody know why I get this error and how I can fix it?

I am studying economics and computer science, but I am a little overwhelmed with my little server and NAS in the basement ;-)

Thank you in advance for your help.

Shared VHDX, Additional Storage, Guest Cluster.

Hey Guys,

I have the following setup:

  • 1x VM, created using Failover Cluster Manager
  • 1x LUN presented to both hosts as the boot drive
  • 1x Additional LUN also presented to both hosts. this is the data drive.
  • 2x VM hosts. (Windows 2012 R2), VM can be migrated from one host to another without issue.

The boot drive LUN is currently running via iSCSI and presented to both my VM hosts. I created a machine in FCM and have successfully attached the VM via (Cluster Shared Volumes) 1x Volume per VM.

However I would like to add an additional CSV to the same VM so that I have a total of 2 separate LUNs attached to the one single VM. I am unable to figure out how to add the additional LUN

Also, do shared vhdx files only work when they are connected to a guest cluster? or do they also work when they are directly attached to a VM from the VM Host?

Thanks,

Robert
