WMF 5.0 on Hyper-V server 2012 R2

Hi all,

I've been given the task of looking at a Hyper-V server 2012 R2 deployment instead of Server 2012 R2 DC using SCCM. Essentially I'm trying to perform a ZTI with complete deployment, creation of Virtual switches, VHD's etc.

I cannot find the basic information on the web if some of the things I'm trying to are possible with SCCM alone.

1) Can I install WMF 5.0 (Required .net 4.5 minimal as prerequisite) on Hyper-V Server 2012 R2, there seems to be no documentation I can find that say you can (plenty talking about server 2012). I assume it's possible as it's based on Server 2012 Core but confirmation would be nice?

2) I see from PowerShell Gallery there is an experimental Hyper-v DSC package 'xHyper-V'. has anyone used this before, run into any issues or limitations? I would be looking at auto configuring the Virtual Switch and creating VHD's.

Additionally if you can recommend alternatives I have also got SCVMM and Orchestrator running which I can leverage also should what I am trying to be impossible.

Hyper-V

Hi, I have 3 Hyper-V hosts all together. Node1 was running fine then I added  two more Hyper-v hosts. My domain controller is on Node1 and all of my Hosts are attached with the domain but Now the problem is I can't attach VMs to the domain that are on Node 2 and Node 3. VMs on Node1 are fine. To cut long story short can you please send me a link of how to manage settings of virtual switch + NIC teaming + Multiplexor protocol / driver in relation to dealing with multiple hosts. I don't know how to manage traffic between 3 different hosts. Please let me know it would be a great help. Thanks

2012 R2 Hyper-V VM Disk 2 has been surprise removed | An error was detected on device \Device\Harddisk2\DR2 during a paging operation

I have been scouring the internet for over a week now, and I cannot figure this one out. Some background... I am retiring an old physical file share server, and I am creating a new 2012 R2 VM on a 2012R2 DataCenter Core Hyper-V host. Creating the VM went without issue. It is configured as follows:

8GB RAM

4 CPU Cores

72GB system drive (C:\)

2TB data drive (D:\)

12GB page file drive (Z:\)

I have about 1.8TB of data to copy over from a physical box, so I am using RoboCopy. I have gotten about 1.5TB of data over, then the new VM's data drive (D:\) disappears and the copy fails. The disk no longer appears in Windows Explorer or diskmgmt.msc. The even log shows many event IDs 153 (The IO operation at logical block address 0x*** for Disk 2 was retried) and event IDs 51 (An error was detected on device \Device\Harddisk2\DR2 during a paging operation, and the last event when the drive disappears is a single Event ID 157 (Disk 2 has been surprise removed).

After racking my head over this for several days, I deleted the VHDX for the 2TB data drive, created a new one, and started the data copy all over... same issue. I completely deleted the VM and all files, reinstalled on new VHDX drives... same issue.

This leads me to think it is an issue with the Hyper-V host, but there are no event IDs pertaining to this, and the other 53VMs are running without issue.

I would SINCERELY appreciate any help with this.

Sorry for huge post, but thank you in advance!

hyper-v issue: Mouse pointer invisible in Linux Mint 17 (run in hyper-v of windows 10)

Hi everyone:

my problem is, after I installed the Linux mint 17 in windows 10 hyper-v, the mouse was invisible in the guest OS (Linux Mint 17). While the mouse really works, I can click the buttons in the guest OS, it's just invisible. anyone know what happened? I've tried to download the Hyper-v Linux integration services and tried to install it in Linux Mint and failed to do it. The setting of hyper-v shows that all the "integration services" are offered except the "guest services".

HyperV remote management

Hello,

I can't connect to hyper-v server core via Windows 10 remote console.

The hyper server is not inside the domain because the AD server is a VM inside that server.

So is it possible to connect a domain client computer to hyperv server core with the hyper-v console ?

I' ve got winrm errors.

Thanks.

2012r2 Virtual Server Network Adapter Error

I have a guest server running Windows Server 2012r2 that no longer has network connectivity. The other 10 servers have no issues.

When viewing the virtual network adapter in Device Manager, it appears as an unknown device. When trying to update the driver from the Device Manager window, I receive an error indicating that the driver was located, but installation could not be completed.

I have reset the Windows installation with DISM, and run SFC several times. I have uninstalled the unknown devices, powered down the VM, removed the virtual NIC, then booted the VM. I then verified that there were no network connections, and no unknown devices in Device Manager. I then ran SFC again, and shut down. I added a new virtual network adapter, powered up the PC and checked the Device Manager. The Virtual Network Adapter then appeared under "Unknown Devices". When I try to update the driver, I get the following error:

"A driver was located for the following device:
Microsoft Virtual Network Adapter
But the driver could not complete the installation at this time."

With Code 18 displayed in the details.

This has been going on for 3 days, and I can't seen to nail it down.  Any thoughts would be appreciated.

Hi,

I have a physical server with Hyper-V 2012 R2. The server is hosting 2 SQL VMs. i want to cluster the 2 VMs. Is there a way to create a virtual SAN on the physical disk to act as the cluster disk for the SQL VMs?

Thank you

VMs CPU suddenly super high until you live migrate the VM

Hi everyone, looking for ideas to resolve a weird behavior on some VMs.

The problem:I have about 90 VMs. Seven of these VMs belong to a RDS farm. The problem only affects these 7 VMs. These 7 VMs are running Windows 2012 R2 + 32GB RAM. About 24 users login to each one of the 7 VMs. All 7 VMs are running on the same node. They are running with the processor compatibility check on, since one of my nodes has newer CPUs than the other 3 nodes. Every thing was running fine for a while. Now usually on Tuesdays and Wednesdays between 9:30AM and 10:00AM the CPU on a random RDS FARM member VM goes super high and a few minutes after the rest of the RDS Farm members VMs also. Not always all of them. The total CPU of the host goes to about 90% (normally its around 30%-50% ). When this happens the host computer response is OK but the VMs are nearly useless. If I log in to one of these high CPU VMs its super slow. The moment you live migrate one VM with high CPU to a another node the CPU on the VM goes down immediately. After doing about 4 live migrations, the other VMs left on the node lower there CPU also.

I don't understand why a live migrate lowers the CPU immediately on the VM.

I've tried to capture data in a VM with Process Monitor but the process crashed when CPU went high and the captured data was corrupt. Process Explorer in the VM was frozen and in resource monitor I couldn't see any process higher than 8%. When this happens I only have about 2 minutes before I have to live migrate otherwise the uses start to complain. So this gives me very little time to investigate

I've checked for scheduled tasks and I have the Windows Update disabled. No backups at that time.

The 7 VMs of the RDS Farm are created from a sysprep template.

I think the problem could have started after some windows updates done on the 7 VMs, but that doesn't explain why after the live migrate the CPUs goes down. And so far it's only happened on Tuesdays and Wednesdays.

Ran out of ideas, so hoping that someone can shine a light on the problem.

Thanks a lot to all,

Ivan Mckenzie

Internet connection drops down minutes after starting Virtaul Desktop

Hi,

I have tried so many different topics and nothing seems to work.
I have a Windows Server 2012 running Hyper-V with currently one desktop only that is essential because we have our shipping program on it (E-Commerce).

When I start the desktop I have a great internet speed with 90/100Mbits but after just a few minutes it drops down to 10/1Mbits and we this causes problem because we can't access our shipping program and print out package labels.

When I first started everything worked fine, I had internet problems at first but solved it by disabling the VMQ and everything was running smooth in 3 months. Until this week...

I tried to adjust the "Jumbo Mtu", Disable "Large Send Offload", Disable "TCP Checksum Offload" and Enabling VMQ and adding a regkey to adjust it.
Nothing seem to work.

I really dont understand why I have great internet response the first 5-10 minutes after I restart the Virtual Desktop either.

The process has not been granted access rights to the parent virtual hard disk

While restoring VMs I receive the following error in event logs:

The chain of virtual hard disks is inaccessible. The process has not been granted access rights to the parent virtual hard disk for the differencing disk.

I am the admin. The machines are messed up. Of course they had checkpoints and of course it was a bad idea (from today's perspective). Now when restoring them I feel like catching all Pokemons from the MSDN error codes list. Please advise how to proceed with this particular one.

Snapshot - General access denied error (0x80070005).

Hi,

When trying to snapshot a VM i get:

'vm1' could not create auto virtual hard disk C:\Virtual Guests\vm1\vm1_B4F0796F-3EB5-4810-BA04-CA8E1DA3774C.avhd: General access denied error (0x80070005). (Virtual machine ID AE6E811F-A056-4A1C-A501-287914A13021)

I looked around on the web, and found that the 'Virtual Machines' group isn't on my server, and therefor isnt on the security tab for my snapshot folder.

Taken from this post: http://joesitblogandotherstuff.blogspot.com/2010/01/could-not-initiate-snapshot-operation.html

How do I manually create the 'Virtual Machines' group, so I can make snapshots work again?

Hypervisor disables Sleep and Hibernate on Windows Server 2012R2! Why? How to solve?

$

Hi,

according to the official documentation of Microsoft, Hyper-V does not block Sleep and Hibernate on Windows Server 2012 and Windows Server 2012 R2.

From powercfg I get the following output:

The following sleep states are not available on this system: Standby (S1) The system firmware does not support this standby state. An internal system component has disabled this standby state. Hypervisor Standby (S2) The system firmware does not support this standby state. An internal system component has disabled this standby state. Hypervisor Standby (S3) An internal system component has disabled this standby state. Hypervisor Hibernate An internal system component has disabled hibernation. Hypervisor Standby (Connected) The hypervisor does not support this standby state. The system firmware does not support this standby state. Hybrid Sleep Standby (S3) is not available. Hibernation is not available. The hypervisor does not support this standby state. Fast Startup Hibernation is not available.

I already installed a graphics device driver to prevent the graphics device from blocking Sleep and Hyper-V. So this should not be an issue.

What can I do to enable Sleep and Hibernate?

Daniel

2 host Hyper-V 2012 r2 cluster hosting about 40 VMs. Mix of 2008-2012r2 servers.

Dell Equallogic PS6000 SAN holds the CSV over iSCSI

Ever since upgrading to Commvault v11, I have been getting these errors when backing up my cluster. I have worked with Commvault support and they claim it is not their software that is the issue, but a VSS problem.

Every backup a few machines will fail with the error below, although not always the same machines. Doesn't matter which host the machines are running on.

This is in Microsoft-Windows-Hyper-V-VMMS log

The virtual machine 'MONITOR-1' cannot be backed up because either the file groups reported during OnIdentify has changed, or the supported backup type (hot backup or saved state backup) reported during OnIdentify has changed. Try not to perform any configuration changes to the virtual machine between OnIdentify and OnPrepareBackup.

Hyper V VM from VHD Fails

Greetings,

My problem arises from taking a VHD created from Disk2vhd to Hyper V from Server 2012 R2 fails/blue-screens once it is started. The setup is pretty basic Generation1 VM that has an IDE controller. At first I thought the image might be corrupted in some way, but I have an exact copy running on Virutalbox. I simply create a new VM in Virtualbox and select the VHD. From there the VM is started and it boots perfectly and is currently running as I type. On my Server 2012, It boots, fails, then attempts to restore, but cannot due to not having a copy of Server 2008 R2 readily available. My question is:

  1. Virtualbox uses a SATA controller and works, Do I need that kind of a setup?
  2. Why won't the IDE Controller boot my VHD?
  3. I've also tried converting it to a VHDX and the SCSI controller, but why did that fail?
  4. Solutions?

I'll confess I'm fairly new to the Hyper V world, and I really need some guidance.

Hyper-V/SCVMM Cluster from scratch. Get a DC up and running.

Is it supported to run Hyper-V/ Server 2012 or 2016 on a SD/USB device?

Lets say I want to set up a Private Cloud with two clustered Hosts with SCVMM and so on. Do I need any Local storage? The DC should be a VM in the cluster. What is the correct way to set it up? I guess its not (99% sure!) possible to set up a SCVMM env without a Domain  Controller. I must have a VM in the cluster first without SCVMM on local storage and then... Uhm. I'm confused. Do I need to first make a dc on local storage and then migrate it to CSV?

Would really like to know how I best set it up from the ground up.

Move a VM created in Hyper-V 2012 to a Hyper-V 2008R2 Server

Hi Guys

I'm trying to move an Exchange 2010 server I created in Hyper-V 2012 to a Hyper-V 2008R2 Server. The files are in VHD format and I re-created the VM on the 2008R2 server and did not do an Export-Import.

Initially the Server would start up fine but I could not get the network card to work at all and the Disk Manager on the server would not display the drives.

I then re-inserted the Integration Services disc and it re-applied all the drivers. Now after restarting the server Windows just gets stuck on Preparing to configure windows and doesn't go any further.

Any ideas?

Cannot select merged drive for virtual machine

$

Hi all,

I just merged an AVHD into a VHD for a virtual machine using the Edit Disk option under the action menu after all of the snapshots had been deleted, but the VM not shut down afterwards for a long time.  I'd done this on a different virtual, and Hyper-V automatically figured out where the new drive was.  With this one, I got a progress bar regarding the merge, which filled to completion.  However, the VM refused to boot, because it can't find the AVHD file that was merged away.  When I try to change the virtual, I get a message saying:

Cannot change disk since a disk merging is pending.

However, I can't figure out how to get Hyper-V to give tell me the progress of that merge.  Any ideas?
