I'd like to put some of my machines into Hyper-V. What is the best practices for virtualization of Windows 10 x64 Enterprise with UEFI and GPT partition?

Do 2016 Hyper-V scalability and more also work on Windows 10 Client Hyper-V?

Hi all,

I see this blog from MS

https://blogs.technet.microsoft.com/windowsserver/2016/08/25/windows-server-scalability-and-more/

The upcoming Server 2016 Hyper-V look wonder on it new scalability ....

I am also using Windows 10 Pro with Client Hyper-V
So I am wonder, do Windows 10 Client Hyper-V also support the same many key feature for example, vCPU, vRAM? I know about the HOST side it is different, I just want to know on the VM side this part do they will different.

Thank you.

converting dynamic disk to Fixed

hello everyone

I'm trying to convert many dynamic vhd files to fixed I also need to set a specific size ut the problem is that wen I enter the -BlockSizeBytes parameter I didn't find any documentation how to enter the size I tried many different cominations but they all give me errors like this error:

Cannot bind parameter 'BlockSizeBytes'. Cannot convert value "10000000000" to type "System.UInt32".

I know that I'm not expert in powershell and I don't know what does "System.UInt32" means can anyone give example how can I set a specific size

thanks

Pet peeve: Numlock of Host

OK, I am sorry if this may seem "childish", but I have to let know my little frustration about the Hyper-V manager and the VM windows that keep changing the state of my Numlock!!!!!!

I want it ON, but everytime I open a VM, it keeps switching it to OFF, and for the love of me, I can't find a way to make it stop that...

There, I feel better, and who knows, maybe this little thing may get corrected in the final version ;)

Problem with unidentified network on virtual machine with windows server 2012 R2

$

I have been searching several blogs for the past 3 days and have found no solution to a Hyper-V issue. This started happening 2 days ago on one server 2012 r2 that hosts 5 virtual servers all are also 2012 r2. Where all the VM's were not connecting to the domain and had registered a "unidentified network". I tried everything I could think of disabling/enabling both the VM virtual NIC and the physical NIC on the host. Instantly went back to "unidentified network". Finally, I just created a new virtual switch and activated another physical NIC and attached the vEthernet switch to the new nic. Assigned to all VM's and they all instantly connected back to my Domain. I thought that it was just glitch when this server re-booted. However, when I came into work today 3 more physical servers all 2012 r2, each hosting at least 3 VM's ranging from Server 2008 Standard to Server 2012 r2 were experiencing the same issue. I did the same solution as stated before and all VM's connected back to the Domain. However, one of my non critical servers I decided to see if this would be a long term resolution so I rebooted the HOST. And instantly all VM's were back to "unidentified network" . And once again the only thing that resolved this is to create a new virtual switch and assign to all VM's.

Please any suggestions would be helpful.

I have already tried all the below steps:

Method 1

Configure the firewall devices not to block communications on UDP/TCP port 389.  For more information about how to do this, click the following article number to view the article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base: Service overview and network port requirements for the Windows Server system

Method 2

Warning Serious problems might occur if you modify the registry incorrectly by using Registry Editor or by using another method. These problems might require that you reinstall the operating system. Microsoft cannot guarantee that these problems can be solved. Modify the registry at your own risk.
  1. Configure one computer in the child domain to connect to the PDC from the root domain.
  2. Restart the computer. The computer should now be able to identify the network. Also, the profile on the firewall will be set to the domain profile.
  3. Export the following registry subkey as a file to a shared location in the domain:
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\NetworkList\Nla\Cache\IntranetForests
  4. Import the registry subkey that you exported in step 3 to the other computers that cannot connect to the PDC from the domain forest.
  5. Restart the computer. The computer should now be able to identify the network and the profile on the firewall will be set to the domain profile.

Method 3

If it is sufficient to identify the network profile based on the child domain name, then mitigating the time taken by NLA during its aggressive retries might be the right approach.

To deploy a registry setting that changes the retry count used by NLA, follow these steps:
  1. Create a new registry key that matches the forest root domain under the path:
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\NetworkList\Nla\Cache\Intranet\
  2. In the newly created registry key for the name of the forest root domain, add the  two registry values below:
    • Failures   REG_DWORD with a value of 1
    • Successes REG_DWORD with a value of 0
This will cause NLA to go to its lowest retry count and should result in identification lasting for just a couple of minutes.

Dear People i have a problem with a backup program veeam backup and replication v9

we needed like 2 months ago to build a new file server. so we did this.

we created a new machine in Hyper-v and added the disks and serve to the failovercluster.

Then we added it to a backup job in Veeam.

from the first try it didnt backupped the server Fs02.

It keeps saying abbout vss

So first i got support from veeam but they couldn’t help because it is a windows server 2012 problem.

i was looking to the vss admin writers, 3 where in a failed state:

i searched for the services of thos admin writers and restarted them. After that I rebooted the server. But still I got no success.

When I try to run a backupjob of the server in veeam this is the static log:

I don’t know if this is necessary, but for the info I put this picture with it PLEASE HELP

Event ID or log location for drive events? Adding of and formatting.

Hey guys

I have a tech who's learning to build VMs and he inadvertently closed the console window and started making changes on the VMM server.  All he did was initialize a drive that was sitting on the management server, but I want to find out when the drive was added and the times it has been formatted.  I can't find and event IDs online for disk events, nor can I find anything perusing the most recent entries - spent the most time in System, thought for sure it would be there.

Anyway, it looks like for some reason the drive was just sitting there initialized, but I need to be sure.  If you can point me to where I can find this info either on the server itself, or some report I can generate from vmm that would be awesome.

Thanks

VM exhibiting 100% disk busy time, large disk queue lengths

Hi everyone,

We have a .VHD workload residing on a logical 2 x 136Gb RAID1 mirror pair of disks.

The .VHD file is 130Gb (with 70Gb of free space)

The Virtual Machine is running Windows 2008 R2 SP1, 4 cores and 8Gb of RAM and is exhibiting 100% disk busy time and disk queue lengths of anywhere between 14 and 44

I'm assuming this is because there is virtually no disk space on the logical drive. Ops Mgr 2012 R2 reports high memory pages/sec

So we backed up the .VHD workload, broke the RAID1 Mirror and inserted 2 x 300Gb  as a RAID1 mirror and restore the .VHD / VM

The Logical disk has 50% free disk space, however the VM is still exhibiting 100% disk busy time and the above disk queue lengths.

It is running on a Windows Server 2008 R2 SP1 HP Proliant Server running the Hyper-V role under Server Core

Any ideas most appreciated.

[resolved] Hyper-V 2012 R2 VLAN not working as expected.

Hi Guy,

I'm currently installing an Hyper-V 2012 R2 Cluster with 2 Lenovo x3550M and V3700 storwize.

I'm now on the networking parts.

both server have 4*1Gb NIC Broadcom NetXtrem |

Two Switch TP-LINK TL-SG1016DE VLAN 802.1q+LAG supported...

1) I've create a Nic Teaming on the 4*1 Gb Nic Adapter (switch independant) on both server

2) I've create a VM-Switch on this Teaming

3) I've Create 3 vEthernets :

LiveMigration Vlan 10

Cluster (CSV) Vlan 11

Admin (mgmt) untagged

on both server.

The  physical switch configuration and connection.

on both switch i've first configured the lag (TP-Link called that Trunk, I don't know what exactly type of LAG it is but not LACP) on port 1, 3, 5, 7 and connect this port to the 4 ports of both server. HyperV shows the teaming up. I've also configure this lag with vlanid 1 (PVID), 10,11.

For my test i've also configure the port 15 and 16 of the switch in a lag  in order to configure a "high speed and redundancy" link for the LiveMigration and CSV with pvid1, vlan 10 and vlan11

I've configure ip addresses on vEthernets. try a ping and nothing. no response

I've read that  Post, but since i'm not a Network Guru i'don't know if it is a misunterstood of how vlan works, an hardware or a software configuration problem

Can you give me an help please ?

Thanks

Hi all,

My hyper-v host win2012 suddently rebooted

checked events shows

Event ID 41, Task 63

Windows large dump was enabled so how to analyze this 8GB dump - Ive selected minidump now.

The hosts are on HP Enclosure- I've also asked HP to check from Enclosure end if any power drops / related errors.

anyone can put light on this

Events show only unexpected shutdown so can't pinpoint any particular application / service causing the unexpected reboot.

HyperV Replica Issues

$

Hi all,

I've got a Win 2012 R2 Core HyperV cluster with 7 nodes in HO and another similar cluster in the DR. These are running on Nutanix nodes, which basically means SMB3 shares are exposed as storage for the clusters so the VMs are hosted on the shares. I've setup HyperV replicas for many VMs between the 2 clusters.

On to the weird problem. The VM Replication Health shows healthy. As soon as I shutdown the VM, and try to perform a planned failover, it fails and requires a resync. After a resync, it starts working again. However, if I try to run the VM again for sometime and shutdown and try to failover, it again asks for a resync. It always requires a resync before failover for some reason.

As a test, I shutdown the VM and waited for a replication cycle. Lo and behold, as soon as the VM is off, the next replication cycle will fail and the VM will require a resync.

The failure occurs at this step of the Planned failover "Send data that has not been replicated to Replica Server."

How does turning off a VM cause a replica to stop? Is there any bug?

Cannot join virtual machine to domain

When I try to join a new HyperV-based VM to the domain, I get the following error: "The specified domain either does not exist or could not be contacted." Physical computers can be joined to the domain - along with new VMs running on various VMware products (including Fusion).

Host: Windows Server 2008 R2; new instance; only role is Hyper-V

Guest: Windows Server 2008 R2; new instance; no roles

AD Server: Windows Server 2003; the Global Catalog is on a separate AD server.

Both of the new systems (i.e., the Host & Guest) can ping various servers throughout our domain (e.g., gateways, AD servers, etc.) and both have connected to the Microsoft servers for updates.

As a test, I entered the wrong password when I was prompted for a domain admin account (when joining the VM to the domain). That returned an error about the logon failure, suggesting that the domain does exist and can be contacted.

Reviewing the Event Log on the AD server, there's a difference between a successful join (using VMware-based VM) and the one that's failing (i.e., the HyperV-based VM). The last event they share in common is the "Service Ticket Request " (Event 673). The next successful step is "Special privileges assigned" (Event 576) but the HyperV VM is logging off instead (Event 538).

Over the last couple of days, I've tried all of the variations I can think of for the host network (including single/dual NICs), the virtual network, and the guest. I've run the NetMon for both the successful join and the failure. Comparing them, I don't see anything out of the ordinary. However, I spend most of my time developing code so I could have easily missed something.

Any ideas would be much appreciated.

challenges on creating Hyper-V Cluster on existing VM working with virtual fiber HBA

Hi Team,

We have two Hyper-V server running as standalone. There are 5 VM already running on each of the Hyper-V server and all the 5 VM are in cluster with another VM running on second Hyper-V. That VM level cluster has been setup using shared LUN through virtual fiber channel option.

we have built new VM on each of the Hyper-V and there is a requirement to allocate shared vhdx to that newly installed VM on both the VM. Since base hyper-v are not in cluster and existing VM level cluster has been done through virtual HBA, I want to know what would be technical challenged to create the Hyper-V cluster just for one set of VM. Is it recommended to do it in this way ?

Another question - Can we migrate the existing VM in to Hyper-V cluster CSV considering the existing VM cluster has been setup through virtual HBA option?

Can't eject DVD ISO from Hyper-V guest machine on Windows 10 Enterprise

I am building Red Hat 6.8 virtual machines on a Windows 10 Enterprise host. Works fine -except that at the end of the guest installation, when it prompts you to reboot, the VM comes back to the Red Hat splash screen, running off the installation DVD, rather than booting the freshly-installed guest O/S.

No problem: just eject the DVD. Click Media -> DVD Drive -> Eject <name-of-iso>.

And at that point, I get a pop-up box declaring "Failed to remove device 'Microsoft:Hyper-V:VirtualCD/DVD Disk':Access denied (0x80041003). Account does not have sufficient privilege to open attachment 'D:'. Error 'General access denied error'.

If I shut the VM down, then I can either edit its settings to set the drive to 'none' contents, or I can click the Media->DVD->Eject option successfully.

So basically, I cannot eject a DVD from a running VM, and I would like to be able to do so

What privilege is required to do this on a running VM, please? And how may I grant it?

(For the record, I also ran an administrator powershell, and got the same error when I tried to eject the DVD from a running VM with the command Set-VMDvdDrive -VmName <vmname> -ControllerNumber 1 –ControllerLocation 0 –Path $null. But if I powered down the VM, then that command silently returned, indicating success. Which is nice, but again: I would like to be able to eject DVDs from **running** VMs, not just ones which have been shut down.)

Thanks,

HJR

Hi ,

I found the below warning in the event log for Hyper-V

'xxx' cannot delete file D:\Hyper-V\xxx_A74D9626-E1C5-4040-B2FB-68D68Bxd5C.hrl: The process cannot access the file because it is being used by another process. (0x80070020).

XXX : is the virtual machine. This log was found in the primary server.

Is this affecting the replication in any way?

Integration Services update required 2012R2 host and VM

Hi.

I have a pair of 2012R2 Datacenter Hyper-V hosts which I fully patched as of Thursday 23/06/16 running 2012R2 VMs also fully patched. After installing all the updates all VMs are reporting the integration services require an update.

However using get-vm it reports the services are 6.3.9600.16384 which I believe is the latest version.

Also under the Hyper-V integration service logs on the host it reports it has connected to the VMs and is running the latest version.

If I try and run the integration services installer it gets to installing guest services and then gives error 14101.

Have also updated another pair of servers running 2012R2 Datercenter as a Hyper-V failover cluster and they are showing the same behavior.

Anyone else seeing this?

Regards

James

Different versions of Hyper v

Hello Guys,

Can someone pls tell me what are the different versions of hyper V available? I guess Windows Server 2012 R2 is having Hyper V 3.0, what else is there? And what are the benefits of each of the versions.

No "insert integration services disk" menu item available - why?

I'm running Hyper-V on Windows 10/64 and have just installed a fresh Windows Server 2003 SP1 installation.

Now I'd like to install Hyper-V Integration Components to the guest OS, but the menu item (Action > insert integration services disk) is not available:

How can I install Hyper-V Integration Components to this guest OS?

Your help is appreciated.

Hyper-V VMConnect mouse

HI,

I have a 2008 R2 Hyper-V Clustered server infrastructure, utilizing 12 Hyper-V servers with three distinct clusters

All the Guest OS are also 2008 R2 and have Integration Services installed.

This live environment has been working for over 2 years with no issues.

Within either Failover Cluster Mgr, Hyper-V mgr on a specific Hyper-V server or via VMM from our VMM mgr server, when I right click a guest OS and select 'connect to virtual machines', a console window opens but when I left click in the window, I get a message stating "Mouse not captured in Remote Desktop session". I am then unable to access the guest OS via the console but can still RDP directly to any of the Guest VM's.

This has previously been working on all Hyper-V servers for 2 years and has now stopped working on them all at the same time.

Reading online posts the resolution appears to be to reboot either or both of the Hyper-V host or guest VM's.

This is not practical in a production environment and I could understand it if a single Hyper-V server was to experience this problem but to see it on 12 at the same time suggests something else is going on.

Would anybody have any advice?

Thanks

Tim
