Windows Server Datacenter as a host?

$

0

Hi,

If the virtualisation host is licensed with a Datacenter license, then it can have an unlimited number of guests running Windows Server, including the Datacenter edition itself.

My question is, is there a benefit in using Windows Server Datacenter as a guest? I'd rather be more conservative and have Standard for guests, but currently there is a mixture of Editions on the estate, and I'd rather streamline to one, whichever it may be, i.e. if Datacenter has its benefits, then let's go for that, otherwise it's Standard.

Thanks!

Can't eject DVD ISO from Hyper-V guest machine on Windows 10 Enterprise

$

I am building Red Hat 6.8 virtual machines on a Windows 10 Enterprise host. Works fine -except that at the end of the guest installation, when it prompts you to reboot, the VM comes back to the Red Hat splash screen, running off the installation DVD, rather than booting the freshly-installed guest O/S.

No problem: just eject the DVD. Click Media -> DVD Drive -> Eject <name-of-iso>.

And at that point, I get a pop-up box declaring "Failed to remove device 'Microsoft:Hyper-V:VirtualCD/DVD Disk':Access denied (0x80041003). Account does not have sufficient privilege to open attachment 'D:'. Error 'General access denied error'.

If I shut the VM down, then I can either edit its settings to set the drive to 'none' contents, or I can click the Media->DVD->Eject option successfully.

So basically, I cannot eject a DVD from a running VM, and I would like to be able to do so

What privilege is required to do this on a running VM, please? And how may I grant it?

(For the record, I also ran an administrator powershell, and got the same error when I tried to eject the DVD from a running VM with the command Set-VMDvdDrive -VmName <vmname> -ControllerNumber 1 –ControllerLocation 0 –Path $null. But if I powered down the VM, then that command silently returned, indicating success. Which is nice, but again: I would like to be able to eject DVDs from **running** VMs, not just ones which have been shut down.)

Thanks,

HJR

How to connect two Virtual Machines on different hosts

Hi Technet,

I need help connecting two virtual machines on different hosts, Let me explain my requirement.

I am trying to establish a test environment in my office. I have a 192.168.x.x range of IP Address in my office. I have 2 base machines (Host1 and Host2 not joined in our domain), created two virtual machines with Hyper-v on Host 1 and created another Virtual machine on Host 2. Both Hosts have 192.168.x.x IP addresses to rdp to my laptop. Now my requirement is to make communicate the virtual machines on host 1 to VM on Host2, I need to install AD and exchange 2010 in Host one and Exchange 2016 on host 2 which I don't want to create in my live environment, Can I assign any other private IP range and do this task if yes how is it possible or Can I do it on my live Environment and will be no risk since they are not joined to our domain? How can I make it possible. Can one suggest a best way. Thank you

hyper-v issue: Mouse pointer invisible in Linux Mint 17 (run in hyper-v of windows 10)

Hi everyone:

my problem is, after I installed the Linux mint 17 in windows 10 hyper-v, the mouse was invisible in the guest OS (Linux Mint 17). While the mouse really works, I can click the buttons in the guest OS, it's just invisible. anyone know what happened? I've tried to download the Hyper-v Linux integration services and tried to install it in Linux Mint and failed to do it. The setting of hyper-v shows that all the "integration services" are offered except the "guest services".

Am having issues with Windows Server Backup on a Windows Server 2012 R2 host when attempting to backup a Win 10 guest VM.  A Get-Integrationservice -VMName [VMName] returns this error.  Hyper-V on host reports that integration services version installed in guest OS is most current.  Even tried to create a new Hyper-V Win 10 VM from scratch and get the same error.

QuestionHere's the details of the error when Get-Integrationservice run from the WS2012R2 host on the Win 10 VM.  All guest services appear Enabled and OK except for VSS:

Cannot join virtual machine to domain

$

When I try to join a new HyperV-based VM to the domain, I get the following error: "The specified domain either does not exist or could not be contacted." Physical computers can be joined to the domain - along with new VMs running on various VMware products (including Fusion).

Host: Windows Server 2008 R2; new instance; only role is Hyper-V

Guest: Windows Server 2008 R2; new instance; no roles

AD Server: Windows Server 2003; the Global Catalog is on a separate AD server.

Both of the new systems (i.e., the Host & Guest) can ping various servers throughout our domain (e.g., gateways, AD servers, etc.) and both have connected to the Microsoft servers for updates.

As a test, I entered the wrong password when I was prompted for a domain admin account (when joining the VM to the domain). That returned an error about the logon failure, suggesting that the domain does exist and can be contacted.

Reviewing the Event Log on the AD server, there's a difference between a successful join (using VMware-based VM) and the one that's failing (i.e., the HyperV-based VM). The last event they share in common is the "Service Ticket Request " (Event 673). The next successful step is "Special privileges assigned" (Event 576) but the HyperV VM is logging off instead (Event 538).

Over the last couple of days, I've tried all of the variations I can think of for the host network (including single/dual NICs), the virtual network, and the guest. I've run the NetMon for both the successful join and the failure. Comparing them, I don't see anything out of the ordinary. However, I spend most of my time developing code so I could have easily missed something.

Any ideas would be much appreciated.

Fixed size VHD with 2 year old snapshot (VM has 2 HDDs)

Hello All,

I have been tasked with merging a avhd and vhd for a company that is running out of VHD disk space

This is how it is.

Server 2012 (not R2) with Hyper V installed

1 VHD running SBS 2008 (exchange has been moved to Office 365, no SharePoint, just file shares and limited apps running remain)

The VHD has a snapshot attached which has been running for 2YEARS NOW!!!!

the C drive is 100GB Fixed (60GB of uncommitted avhd data)

the D drive has 500GB fixed (230GB of avhd uncommitted data)

I cannot "delete/merge" the snapshot because the array does not have the merge space (I am really stuck here)

I have tried adding an empty snapshot to the avhd and then exporting it but it "completes" but the avhd data is not committed!!! this is because I think ......the fixed VHD size??  reached its max and then...says its complete

Exact same this with the D drive

After the export the VHD are 100 Dynamically expanding and 500 GD expanding for the D drive

this is what I have tried adding an empty avhd to the parent because I read on many placed that if you export this it merges the avhd into the vhd which give you 2 singe VHDs (C: , D:)......this works but the uncommitted data is not merged into the original VHD.so I end up with two VHDs 1 that has all the old data and the same with the second...

so 1 VHD, 2 Years of uncommitted avdh not no room to merge because of the original vhd because its fixed size

I have spent all weekend on this and found no solution but I do have a 3TB ICSI target to play around with it if this helps

Any suggestions?

PS I have spent 25hours on this already but I will try anything

Kind Regards,

Shane Kearney.

Hyper-V 2012: Replication fails to automatically resume after a server reboot

$

Hello,

I have a VM lab with Windows 2012 and Hyper-V. Overall it has been awesome, but I have one small glitch:

The VMs on server A replicate to server B. The new Hyper-V replication feature works perfectly, except for my one problem. When I shut down and then restart the servers, replication does not always automatically resume for all VMs. Some VMs will resume replication on their own and some will require a manual resume - and it seems to be random. I can always restart replication by right clicking and the hitting Replication --> Resume Replication, but I rather hoped that this would happen automatically, all of the time.

Has anyone else experienced this? Is there a cure?

I have a hyper-V cluster with shared storage that is giving me the following error:

MAC conflict: A port on the virtual switch has the same MAC as one of the underlying team members on Team Nic Microsoft Network Adapter Multiplexor Driver

there are duplicate MAC addresses but it looks like they are on the SAN and LAN Network (not on the same network). the network cards are teamed/Multiplexor

I have read in some other threads that this is expected behavior?

VMs aren't migrating properly

$

Howdy,

I paused one of our Hyper-V Nodes last night and asked it to drain roles.  Normally, this would just live migrate the VMs off and everything would be fine.  However, it didn't work that way and everything threw errors and ended up doing a regular migration where the machines got powered off.

Today I tried to do a manual Live Migration with just 1 VM and got strange results.

The VM did live migrate and Hyper-V Manager shows it is now on the new node.  However, in FCM the VM shows as being Off.  I tried this with 2 different VMs and both did the same thing.  In FCM, the Status shows as Off but yet the Up Time counter is counting.

Has anyone ever had this happen before and know if this is pointing to some sort of problem with our Cluster configuration or something?

Thanks.

KB2920189 fails to install on generation 2 vm's

It looks like there is a problem with the KB2920189 update.

When trying to install it via Windows Update on some servers, they all fails the installation of this update - they are all running 2012 R2 inside generation 2 Hyper-V machines.

Has this update been tested with the UEFI implementation inside Hyper-V?

Hyper-V with Sql and IIs

$

We are beginning to understand Hyper-V and we are interested in secure our ASAP Server and some webpages via Hyper-V or the best way. We have a 2008 server Enterprise R2 with Sql server 2008 R2. We are looking the Hyper-V function and we heard that for maximum security for Sql can be used a virtual private network. We see that Hyper-V has options to make virtual networks "External"' "Internal" and "Private". According to that we have these questions:

1.-For best security for Sql what is best suggested put Sql server in a "Private" Hyper-V Network?.
2.-About point 1 case if you create a "Private" Hyper-V Network is required to create also a "Internal" Hyper-V Network and communicate from "Private" to "Internal"? We ask because we saw that "Internal" creates a Network connection in Windows and "Private" not and if we create only a "Private" network how can we communicate from connection string in our applications to write and read to the Sql? The "Private" can receive a NAT internet from a sharing of the main computer? Or what could be the scheme of configuration of Sql if suggested a "Private" only Hyper-V to communicate with the main computer. Or is required only for "private" Hyper-V to communicate with a "Internal" and no other way?
3.-Or is best create just a "Internal" Hyper-V Network and use the network adapter created in Windows by Hyper-V to communicate with the main computer and our applications? For example in connection string use \\IP_Internal_HyperV\......? Or how could be the scheme of communication? In this case we know like a network adapter is created in Windows you can share NAT and other things but what is best suggested if "Internal" Hyper-V is best suggested to secure in best way Sql?
4.-What is the best way to secure Sql? Maybe is not suggested Hyper-V to secure Sql what other way could be?
5.-We ask for Sql this because time ago we had hacking attempts to our Sql and one of our applications. Some problems were that we used an application that posted messages via a www link for example: "http://www.xxx.com/app.asp?messagepost=example&postid=hello" Then someone tried to use that kind of remote feature and posted millions of messages using a robot or who knows. Then they attempted to enter the Sql through the app.asp. This is an example and we want to protect the Sql and isolate some webpages to receive and send information only allowed to the IP of our main server in other words the host the rest of the traffic ignore. And could be tricky because if you post via the www link with "app.asp" example like we mentioned before then although you hide the Sql in a Hyper-V network the application still using the connection string of "app.asp" and if you post like we said via "app.asp" then they can continue posting garbage because the connection string will call the Sql hidden in the Hyper-V network.  Maybe they can't attack the main Sql but the will continue posting messages like a crazy using the "app.asp". This problem to protect the example "app.asp" can be solved using Hyper-V or what you suggest? For now we solved "app.asp" by confirming the messages by one admin before posted to the Internet. But if there is a way to protect with Hyper-V much better. That is why we ask.
6.-Then for all the before mentioned it is possible for example to isolate like one web page only and call that webpage from the IIS on a "Internal" or "Private" Hyper-V network. The rest of our webpages we'll continue running in the main server normally but we just want to isolate one page for the point 5 cause and protect that webpage and the Sql at same time.

We hope someone can orient us.

Thank you

fast after storage move

Server 2012, clustered Hyper V, two hosts and approx 15 guests on a HP P2000 G3 SAN (dual controllers  2 X SAS connections per host server)

I am experiencing a confusing issue and hoping someone has some suggestions.

We have an RDS farm with two servers and they have been getting a bit slow to respond.

I added eight new 15k disks to the SAN, configured as RAID 10 and used only for the two RDS servers.

Using Crystal Disk Mark to test speed on these two servers I get up to 1000MB/s on sequential reads.

A couple of days later they are back down to 80MB/s on testing.

The Confusing part! If I perform a "move virtual storage operation" to a different Virtual Disk on the same SAN, the speed comes back.

If I then move it back to its original location the speed is back up to 1000MB/s again.

This is with no users logged on, no backups running, nothing.

Move it out, and back again immediately (40 mins for entire operation) and the speed increases dramatically

I now have both RDS servers on the same LUN and one running at 10 X the speed of the other.

It works with either server, the one you move picks up speed.

thanks

James

Do 2016 Hyper-V scalability and more also work on Windows 10 Client Hyper-V?

Hi all,

I see this blog from MS

https://blogs.technet.microsoft.com/windowsserver/2016/08/25/windows-server-scalability-and-more/

The upcoming Server 2016 Hyper-V look wonder on it new scalability ....

I am also using Windows 10 Pro with Client Hyper-V
So I am wonder, do Windows 10 Client Hyper-V also support the same many key feature for example, vCPU, vRAM? I know about the HOST side it is different, I just want to know on the VM side this part do they will different.

Thank you.

Visual Studio Emulators for Android doesn't work on Windows 10

Hi,

When I try to start emulator the start task fails, with message like below.

10.08.2015 14:06:01: [Critical] Unable to add user to the Hyper-V Administrators group. Exit code 2220.

I was using it on Windows 8.1 where it worked well on the same PC. This proves that my PC meets all requirements and it is properly configured. After clean install of Windows 10 emulator doesn't work.

Hyper-V on my PC is running well. I can create and run 32 and 64 bit vm's. There is problem with creating android vm's by vs emulator. There is no group "Hyper-V Administrators" and it can't be created.

Tried these solutions:
http://blogs.msdn.com/b/virtual_pc_guy/archive/2010/09/28/creating-a-hyper-v-administrators-local-group-through-powershell.aspx

http://blogs.msdn.com/b/virtual_pc_guy/archive/2008/01/17/allowing-non-administrators-to-control-hyper-v.aspx

also i tried to recreate InitialStore.xml for Hyper-V with needed group and operations but without success. It seems that hyper-v bundled with windows 10 doesn't require any special group to run, create, manage and remove vm's, switches, etc. Emulator thinks different and it can't assign me to group which does not exists.

Spanning-Tree on virtual switch

Hi,

I'm re-configuring the switch-config and I wounder if a virtual switch in Hyper-V should be considered as a switch or a host when you configure the switch. Should the port on the physical switch be "spanning-tree portfast", as there was a host at the end, or "no-spanning-tree portfast" like when you attach a switch to that port?

Hi,

we have a WinServer2012R2 with Hyper-V. There actually two VMs (Win7) running, everything ok.

Now trying to install a VM with Win 10, fresh Installation from ISO (different Version = same result ).

Installer of Win10 runs completely to end, restarts and then blue screen error 0xC000021A! No chance.

It was no update or something like that, just a fresh Installation.

What to do to install a WIN 10 als Guestsystem on Hyper-V ?
