Shrink Linux Guest VMs HDD (release unused sectors)

$

Hey guys,

is there any secure solution to shrink (release unused space) on Linux-Debian VMs?

I have many Linux VMs running with dynamic HDDs up to 500GB.
Now some Machines was grown up and i have cleanup many stuff within the VM Disk the VM only use 50GB in the Guest-Filesystem.

In Hyper-V the HDD used 500GB (okay, and normal - i know ;))

Now I search for a solution to shrink the VM HDD on Hyper-V down to the original size.
I also use replication every x minutes to a another Hyper-V.

I already have overwrite the unused sectors in the VM with zeros.
Is there any good solution to release unused space in the Host-HDD-File in Hyper-V?

Thanks and Best Regards

Windows 2012R2 VM under Hyper-V sudden BSOD ntoskrnl.exe+14e8a0

We have a 2012 R2 Server Standard VM running on Hyper-V 2008R2 Host for few months, then we migrated the 2012R2 VM to Hyper-V 2012R2 Host. Since then, the VM crashes twice a day with BSOD and no specific crash message.

The Hyper-V Host is running fine, and other instances (none is 2012) runs fine on it including some Linux based ones. The Hardware is latest Intel Xeon E2600 v3 with 32GB DDR4 RAM.On the old Hyper-V 2008R2 Host, everything was working perfectly fine.

The VM is 2012R2 Standard with 5160MB RAM assigned and 4 Virtual Processors.

What we have tried so far:

- Remove Device Manager devices, and allow windows to reinstall them

- Integration Tools says it is up to date

- Removed NIC and let windows reinstall, reinserted the IPs

- Ran chkdsk C: /R (it didn't do anything)

- Ran rootkit/virus scan, checked nothing suspicious in DriverView (all MSFT drivers loaded)

- Checked the BSOD dumps using Bluescreen View and WindDBG , the results are inconclusive (below):

- Performed memory diagnostic scan on the VM, no issues

- Ran Verifier, there was no drivers loaded other than MSFT drivers. Also checked Sigverif , and found no issues. Also updated mc_updateGenuineIntel.dll with updated Intel micro code update.

- The problem was happening with the disk in VHD format, so we converted it to VHDX but the error persisted. There were no errors while converting and have not seen anything indicating an issue with the VM (nothing missing, nothing corrupted). The VM runs MSSQL 2012 DB.

- All Important, Critical and Optional Updates installed

- The old Host 2008R2 had NTFS partition, the new Host has ReFS partition

- The errors are:

Unable to connect RDP for Hyper-v Host windows 2012 Servers

Hi

Currently i am facing an strange issue. detail as follows.

1. 5 Physical server join to host windows hyper-v 2012 fail over cluster & over that all hyper-v Vm are hosted. all 5 server are connected with SAN switch to SAN storage. network is connected with Virtual connect switch.

2.  On my daily routine to health check i will do RDP to any of the 5 servers and see the failover cluster  status & hosted Vms.

3. in case of issue, initially i will be not to connect fail over cluster on any server, saying one of the host server from 5 server are not available, ( target computer is not accessible Ex:Server 5 from server management ).

4. i will try to connect through RDP to server 5. it will not work.  Ping will work, vm that are running on server 5 will work.

5. when i tried to connect it from HP iLo it will open the session, but unable to click Ctrl+Alt+Delete. hangup.

6. i have to hit hard restart to server, then it boots and joins to cluster normally & work again for week or 10 days.

7. The above issue is random on all 5 physical server.

8. i have check event log no events, i dont know what is causing the physical server to remove from failover cluster 2012.

9. And i am not sure either is windows configuration problem or Hardware problem.

can any one help me out to sort of this issue.

thank you

I cannot remote desktop in at random times to my hyper v virtual machine.

Replication over 10Gbps links only using 1Gbps

Hey everyone,

I'm trying to wrap my head around something and determine if there is an issue with my server, the network, or if things are working as designed.

Here is my setup:

I have 2 Hyper-V servers; 1 primary and a second one is the replica. I have 5 VMs (6.2TB storage per VM) that live on the primary and I need to have them replicate to the replica server. I have 3 sets of teamed NIC in Switch Indepentent mode acting as active/passive. One team (2 x 1Gb NICs) is for hypervisor management. One team (2 x 10Gb NICs) are for the VM traffic, and one team (2 x 10Gb NICs) for replication traffic. On the physical network side, the traffic goes through 2 10Gb fiber switches.

When I start the VM replication over the network, I can see the traffic go through the Replication team, but the data sent stays between 800Mbps and 1.2 Gbps. Is this speed normal for replication, normal for teaming NICs, or is there something I am missing?

Thanks,

Josh

Hi,

I have Hyper V Version: 6.3.9600.16384 on a Windows server 2012 with Intel(R) Core(TM) i7-4790 CPU @ 3.60GHz, 32 GB RAM in a test environment. I installed one VM with Windows Server 2008 R2 from an ISO. This works fine.

While it is running, I try and create another VM with any OS, be it server 2008/2012 or Windows 8.1 ISO, the machine fails to start.

"An error occurred while attempting to start the second virtual machine(s)

'VM2' failed to change state"

Any help with this please.

Monitoring vSwitch Traffic for Native VLAN in Hyper-V 2012 R2

$

Using 2012 R2 Hyper-V, created (3) vNICS in the managementOS (backup, mgmt., livemigration) and have a LACP team that has a vSwitch configured WITHOUT"allow mgmt OS to share this NIC" so it DOES NOT show up in the network connections GUI as a vEthernet and for that matter not in Task manager either, which is a really neat and helpful feature. VM's all run on the native untagged VLAN on the vSwitch to simplify things, but I can not monitor all the aggregated traffic from my VM's now.

VMName                 VMNetworkAdapterName          Mode     VlanList
------                       -------------------- ----            --------
                             HostManagement                    Access     20
                             Backup                                  Access      30
                             LiveMigration                         Access      50
Upgrade Test Virtual Machine Network Adapter      Untagged

How can I configure the vSwitch to show up in the GUI/Task manager to be able to monitor traffic on the native VLAN for all my VM's like I can for the vNICs?

Thank you

File server getting hammered by DFSR

I have a 2012 R2 Hyper-v server. The are two VMs, a DC, and a file/print. The file server is getting hammered by DFSR. There are many files open, but I don't think that would cause such a high utilization. The hyper-v server doesn't show the same high utilization and ques.

So its definitely something in the VM disk itself.

Any suggestions? I am a VMware guy myself, but a buddy wanted to throw up a server and he already has windows 2012 r2.

Error when creating VHDX via Hyper-V Manager remotely

$

Hey all!

So, I installed Hyper-V 2012 Core on a box, patched it, and then joined it to the domain. If I connect to the server via Hyper-V Manager from either a Windows 8 machine or Server 2012 machine and try to create a VM, it says "There was an unexpected error in configuring the hard disk on [Insert VM Name Here]." I feel like I've tried everything. I can not create the disk manually via the Manager on its own, before or after the VM being created. I can, however, create the disk via PowerShell with out a problem! Via PowerShell, I can create a dynamic VHDX disk every time without an issue.

I was curious if anyone has had this problem and/or knows a solution.

Thanks in advance!

unable to start VM

I have a Windows 2012 R2 host running 3 guest machines. the other day, I had to power down 1 of the guests. however, when I went to start the VM again, I get a pretty genetic error, "An error occurred while attempting to start the virtual machine." I have checked the folder permissions and made sure the guid assigned to the machine has correct folder permissions.

There is nothing in event viewer.  in the years I have been working with Hyper-V, I have never seen such a generic message.  Has anybody seen this or have inclination on what the issue is?

Hyper V Virtual Server not visible to Windows 10 Workstations

Have a Hyper V running on 2008 server.  The virtual server is Server 2003, which was necessary for compatibility with an older piece of software.  Has been working fine but the other day the server crashed and would not reboot or rather would get caught in a loop. I found a Domain Services blue screen and followed procedures to fix it. This involved renaming some log files and also setting the BIOS date back a few weeks. The computer booted back up and the date and time were put back to the correct settings in windows.  From that point on all the Windows 10 Pro 64 workstations cannot access shares on the virtual server. They access shares on the physical server fine. All the other workstations that have 7 or XP can access the virtual server shares fine.

What has happened ?

Hello,

I have a question about win server 2012 standard. I check on microsoft page and there is if I want to run many VM's than I must have datacenter. If I want to run up to 6 VM can I do it on standard or i have to buy datacenter. Is there someone who knows the line between Standard and Datacenter.

Thank you

Need an alternative solution to DPDK for Linux VMs running on Hyper-V

Hi there,

Does any one know if there is an alternative solution to DPDK for Linux VMs running on Hyper-V? or in another word, what's MS team recommended high performance Linux user space packet lib as a replacement of DPDK?

Background: I have a China local partner built their virtual Web-Application-Firewall on Ali Cloud ECS (VM running on KVM based hypervisor). They are stuck when porting the v-WAF solution to Azure VM (based on Hyper-V) because SR-IOV (the upstream of DPDK) has not been supported in LIS drivers of Hyper-V. My partner's v-WAF relies on DPDK lib to do packet processing in the Linux user space. there was a roadmap in DPDK 16.04 to support Hyper-V, but was removed few days before publishing.

thanks in advance

Installing Windows 2012 R2 on a VM fails to load the OS from physical DVD

I am trying to install a new WS 2012 R2 VM. The VM fails to start when attempting to install the OS from the physical DVD. I get an error messages stating that the VM failed to "change state". The VM will start without trying to load the OS from DVD. The DVD is an installation DVD from Microsoft and not an ISO file. Any idea why this is happening?  I have used the DVD disk from Microsoft before and had no problem installing a VM so I know it works.  Thanks for your help.

Slow Virtual Machines in Hyper V

$

Hello Experts ,

I am facing a weird slow VM performance issue, I have a server with Windows Server 2012 R2 DC installed , running Hyper V on it with 128 GB of RAM and 1TB of HD with that we have RAID 1 configured. I have cloned 20 Virtual machines all of Windows Server 2012 R2 standard as guest VMs on the server. For cloning I made a template virtual machine, run sysprep on it and then exported it, now whenever I need to make a new machine I just import the exported VM. I am noticing that the performance of all the cloned virtual machines are very slow meaning that they respond very slowly. All the Virtual Machine's Files are on the same 1 TB Hardisk in there separate folders. I am guessing that there is some issue with the Read/Write Operations of the VMs.

Can anyone please suggest some solution for this or help  me in diagnosing the issue.

Thanks

Frank

Can't add new vhd to an existing VM. "The disk is already connected to the virtual machine" error

Hello,

I made a new 1TB fixed vhd, and trying to add it to a VM on Hyper-v 2012. I get the following error (which is not true, this disk is brand new and is not attached to any machine). I googled this and immediately came to a link about a bug in Hyper-v and a hotfix available (https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/2836402). But before going with hotfix I wanted to see what other people think, and if this is really something that is related to the bug, or could be resolved in another way. Please let me know.

I tried to add the new vhd while the VM was running, and as a third disk to an existing virtual SCSI controller. If I shut the VM down and add new SCSI controller and add this disk as the only disk on the controller, do you think that could help?

Recommended UEFI/BIOS Settings for 2012 R2 Hyper-V Host

I'm looking for an article or link with the recommended uefi/bios settings for a 2012 r2 hyper-v host. This is for IBM hardware.

What I already have is:

  • Power Setting: High Performance
  • C1E: Disabled
  • EIST: Disabled
  • C State: Disabled
  • P State: Disabled
  • Enable Hardware Virtualization Assists (Intel VT-x and AMD AMD-V)
  • Enable Hardware Data Execution Prevention (DEP).Intel Execute Disable (XD). AMD: No Execute (NX). Configured in the system BIOS.
  • Disable Intel VT-d and Trusted Execution

NOTE:   The machine must be completely powered off (pull the AC cable to be sure) after you change these BIOS settings.

Can anyone recommend anything else we might want to set in the uefi/bios of a hyper-v host or provide another link or article with that information?

T.J.
