Hyper V 2012 R2 upgrade (free version) to Windows Server 2012 R2

$

I just recently bought a Dell T20. I have a SSD on a SATA card that I have installed Hyper V 2012 R2. I also have 4 hard drives in RAID 10 using the onboard SATA. It took me a while to set it up (I'm relatively new to this) without a GUI through powershell.

I cannot easily install a programs to monitor the RAID and I really miss having a GUI. Is it possible to do an in place upgrade to Server 2012 R2 standard? Or do I need to start from scratch?

Thanks in advance for any help.

setting up hyper V first timer?

Hello, I am setting up hyper v for the first time. I have setup VM's in the past on linux systems and as well as using virtual box on home windows OS's..

i am using Window server 2012 r2

I installed hyper v and made a external virtual switch

i created a VM and connected it to the virtual switch

i then install the W 2008 r2 OS on the new guest machine

i installed the integration services

I do not get any internet on the guest

it is pulling IPs from DHCP and i can ping the gateway but not the host nor can i access any webpages

i have created other machines and tried connecting via a legacy NIC and had ther same results

I have to be missing something simple here, please help!!!

Hyper-v guests have no network connection? (on server 2012 r2)

Hello all, so first time experimenting with hyper-v, and it's not going so well.

I installed windows 7 as a guest OS, however, it has no network connection at all, and I can't figure out why.

I have four ethernet conenctions available, so I am going to use connects 2, 3 and 4 for virtual machines. I go into the virtual switch manager, make a new virtual switch, label it "passthrough 1" (or 2 or 3, etc), and assign it to network adapter #2 (or 3 or 4, etc).

I allow the management operating system to share the network adapter, and have tried with and without vlan identification, but I still get no connection in the guest os, hyper v shows no activity either.

What the heck am I doing wrong?

Hyper-V 2016 "no virtual machine files found"

Hi All,

With Hyper-V 2012, I can use Hyper-V Manager to import any Virtual Machine configuration file name format ( It allows me free to change the name of virtual machine configuration file).

This is my virtual machine folder structure

D:\hyperV-2012\myvm\Virtual Machines\myvm.xml

D:\hyperV-2012\myvm\Virtual Hard Disks\myvm1.vhd

D:\hyperV-2012\myvm\Virtual Hard Disks\myvm2.vhd

D:\hyperV-2012\myvm\Snapshots\

Using the Hyper-V 2012 manager, I can import the Virtual Machine in D:\hyperV-2012\myvm .

When using Hyper-V 2016 manager to import the Virtual Machine, it say "no virtual machine files found"

Then, I try to rename myvm.xml to any name in GUID format, e.g. ab38891b-1fa5-4117-adae-4698f5215a39.xml. The Hyper-V 2016 found  my VM and I can import it normally.

This is a bug in Hyper-V 2016 or the "Virtual Machine Configuration File Naming  Rule" has been changed in Hyper-V 2016 ?

Thanks for any help,

Khanh

Replaced Physical NIC, now Virtual Network Devices seem to be working but Device Error on Default Miniport on Host

$

I had to replace a physical NIC in my Windows Server 2012 R2 host machine. After doing that, I didn't see any related events in the Event Viewer, but there were yellow triangles over the 3 Hyper-V network devices in Device Manager on the host machine. And sure enough the VM had no network access. I have created a new Hyper-V Virtual Ethernet Adapter in the Hyper-V Manager (Virtual Switch Manager). Network function appears to be restored, but on the Host machine, one of the 3 devices with the yellow triangle is gone (don't recall what device it was) and the other two (old Network Adapter and the Hyper-V Network Switch Default Miniport) are both still there with the yellow triangle. I can't uninstall them (no error when I right-click and select Uninstall, but they don't go away either).

Questions:

  1. What is the Hyper-V Network Switch Default Miniport and do I need it working to have proper function for the VM?
  2. If the Hyper-V Network Switch Default Miniport is not needed, how can I remove it?
  3. How do I remove the old Hyper-V Virtual Ethernet Adapter that is no longer in use?
  4. Is it typical when replacing a physical NIC that the virtual network would need to be re-created? If so, surely there's a reference for the right way to do this. Could you provide a link to that so I can see if I missed anything in the rush to get this working?

Thanks,
Colin

Hello, i recently read that the nested feature is currently available only for intel vt-x processors. Do anyone know if Microsoft is going to add that feature to the AMD processors??

Hyper-V replication between sites

Hi, I have a situation where I have 2 sites, both with 2 Hyper-V Hosts

Replication is enabled and works well between primary server and backup server on each site.

The sites are connected via a WAN, and are part of the same domain.

If I attempt to replicate between sites in either direction I end up getting 0x800002F78 error.

The few details found on the internet have been tried to no avail.

At one point I though it may be to do with CPU manufacturer, one site being older AMD Dell servers, and the other site new Intel CPU's.

I have been able to export a VM from one site to the backup server on the other, once permissions had  been set correctly, but still no replication.

Any suggestions/help would be gratefully received

Visual Studio Emulators for Android doesn't work on Windows 10

Hi,

When I try to start emulator the start task fails, with message like below.

10.08.2015 14:06:01: [Critical] Unable to add user to the Hyper-V Administrators group. Exit code 2220.

I was using it on Windows 8.1 where it worked well on the same PC. This proves that my PC meets all requirements and it is properly configured. After clean install of Windows 10 emulator doesn't work.

Hyper-V on my PC is running well. I can create and run 32 and 64 bit vm's. There is problem with creating android vm's by vs emulator. There is no group "Hyper-V Administrators" and it can't be created.

Tried these solutions:
http://blogs.msdn.com/b/virtual_pc_guy/archive/2010/09/28/creating-a-hyper-v-administrators-local-group-through-powershell.aspx

http://blogs.msdn.com/b/virtual_pc_guy/archive/2008/01/17/allowing-non-administrators-to-control-hyper-v.aspx

also i tried to recreate InitialStore.xml for Hyper-V with needed group and operations but without success. It seems that hyper-v bundled with windows 10 doesn't require any special group to run, create, manage and remove vm's, switches, etc. Emulator thinks different and it can't assign me to group which does not exists.

Who can help me with an USB external disk connected directly to the server to be mounted to a virtual machine as partition (Hyper-V Windows 2012-R2)?

Thanks In Advance. "Step by step" is the best method for me.

If so then do we need to use third-party tools or windows backup can do the job?

Remote connect to HyperV Host machine from Windows 10 Console

Hi Guys.  I'm actually running windows 10 on both ends of my question here.  I have a Windows 10 machine that is my hyper v host box and I'm trying to connect my hyper v console on another windows 10 machine on the same network but I keep getting errors.  I've followed the walkthroughs from MS but still no go.  Does anyone have a proven walkthrough on how to setup remote administration of Hyper V host via Hyper V Console?  Thanks.

Virtual Server with Event ID 51 and Event ID 57 - An error was detected on device \Device\Harddisk2\DR2 during a paging operation

Virtual Server on Hyper-V

Event ID 51 - An error was detected on device \Device\Harddisk2\DR2 during a paging operation

Event ID 57 -  The system failed to flush data to the transaction log. Corruption may occur.

I have tried running a CHKDSK on the disk in question but that has not resolved the issue.  The server will be fine for a few hours after a reboot but will start seeing the error messages.

Once the drive is messed up I am unable to open applications:  "Error:  SVCMGR.exe the application was unable to start correclty (0xc000006) Click OK to close the application"

How to move a VM to another drive on the same hyper-v server 2012 R2?

How to move a VM to another drive on the same hyper-v server 2012 R2?

Do not understand the import options that I should use below.

1) which option should I choose?

2) What is the difference between registering (unique id is preserved) versus copying (generate a new id).

3) please explain what is the purpose of a id for hyper-v VMs.

4) hypothetical - if we were moving the export to different hyper-v server then which option would be used (register versus copy and why use this option)

XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX

Register -- This option assumes that the VM and its files are in the right place and that you simply need to register the VM's unique ID with Hyper-V. This could come in handy if you bring up a new Hyper-V host and for whatever reason or circumstance you present the storage to Hyper-V and you need to manually register the VMs on that storage. The unique VM ID is preserved and does not change in this option.

Restore -- This option is handy if you have your VM files stored on a file share somewhere or maybe even on a removable disk and you need to register the VM's unique ID with Hyper-V, but also need to move the files from the current storage location into a more appropriate location. This option will copy the files and will register the VM, all the while preserving the VM unique ID.

Copy -- This can come in handy when you are manually copying the VM files for the purpose of creating a new VM. Essentially you are using the "template" approach, except you are doing it manually. In this case using the Copy command will generate a new unique ID for the VM you are creating out of the copy process.

The Virtual machine cannot be hot backed up since it has non-snapshot capable volumes in it

Hi,

I have a 3 node cluster on Hyper-V 2012.

I am getting the following warnings in the event log of one of the hosts.

Log Name:      Microsoft-Windows-Hyper-V-Integration-Admin
Source:        Microsoft-Windows-Hyper-V-Integration-VSS
Date:          29/04/2016 04:09:57
Event ID:      4099
Task Category: None
Level:         Warning
Keywords:
User:          NT VIRTUAL MACHINE\<ID>
Computer:      HYPER-V HOST
Description:
'VM': The Virtual machine <ID> cannot be hot backed up since it has non-snapshot capable volumes in it

Does anyone have any ideas why this might be showing up or how to resolve?

Thanks

Microsoft Server 2012 and Hyper-V 2012 licensing

$

I have some questions about the licensing

Windows Server 2012 Standard license (2 physical CPU) --> allows to install two virtual machines

Question 1) I'm allowed to install two virtual machines based on Server 2012 Standard (then I have 3 servers with 1 license)? Or a maximum of two virtual machines running Windows/Linux/whatever?

If I run the Hyper-V 2012 server (free hypervisor)

Question 2) and i buy a Server 2012 Standard license. I'm allowed to install/run two virtual machines based on 2012 server?

Because you have 1 P(hysical)OSE and 2 V(irtual)OSE licenses with 2012 standard.

I found a MS article

It says: if you have 2012 standard and you use both virtual instances. Then you can only use the host (OSE) for management of the two VOSE (virtual instances)?

scratch vm

Hi,

I work in the data tier so excuse my ignorance about hyper-v.

We have a 3 node hyper-v cluster and I would like to fill up the space that is left for high availability eg 33% on each node with a vm that does not need to failover and can be removed/disabled during a failover event from any node. These 'scratch' vms would have data and executable s deployed to them in real time (flat file with a processing .exe) controlled from a central data management vm.

Does this make sense and is this sort of thing possible, ie I want to use all available resources but can ditch these vms during node failure so that primary vms are ok.

Thanks for any help

Error 0x80070005 when exporting Hyper-V VMs to a remote Linux NAS

Hey to all,

is there any Solution to Export a Hyper-V VM to a remote Unix Storage without to grant special read/write access to the computer account of the Hyper-V Machine?

On some machines I have not enough space local to Export a VM to the local and Disk ans them move to a remote Storage.

I've found many articles where users create access for the computer account - but what is with Unix Storage that are NOT Member of the AD Structure?

At the Moment i will recieve the following error on Hyper-V, if I create an export to the remote storage:
