Hyper-V VSS writer ecnouter errors during taking VSS snapshot on Windows 2012 R2

When taking VSS snapshot with Hyper-V VSS writer on Windows 2012 R2, there are frequently some warning/error logs in Windows Event log. This will make the Hyper-V VSS writer goes to a bad state and in BCD, the BACKUP_METADATA is also missing for the problematic VM.

The logs in Windows Event log are as below:

In Windows Log->Application, there will be logs as:

A VSS writer has rejected an event with error 0x800423f4, The writer experienced a non-transient error.  If the backup process is retried,

the error is likely to reoccur.

. Changes that the writer made to the writer components while handling the event will not be available to the requester. Check the event log for related events from the application hosting the VSS writer.

Operation:

   PrepareForSnapshot Event

Context:

   Execution Context: Writer

   Writer Class Id: {66841cd4-6ded-4f4b-8f17-fd23f8ddc3de}

   Command Line: C:\Windows\system32\vmms.exe

   Process ID: 2024

In Hyper-V-VMMS there are logs as:

Could not create backup checkpoint for virtual machine '********': Overlapped I/O operation is in progress. (0x800703E5). (Virtual machine ID 2AD8D389-65AE-45F7-89F8-FDF2F08CE3C2)

In Hyper-V-Worker there are logs as:

The problematic VMs are with Windows OS, Windows 2008R2, Windows 2012 R2 and Windows 8.1.

My question is:

What is the cause of this problem? The event logs are not understandable at all.

How should I fix this problem?

Attaching a tape drive to a 2012R2 VM

Thank you for reading my post.

I’m having a problem ‘attaching’ my HP SAS Autoloader Tape Library to my backup server. Any direction or advice would be appreciate.

Setup

One Physical server with Hyper – V role installed and four Virtual Machines:

1-    - File server 1

2-     -File Server 2

3-     -Application Server 1

4-      -Application Server 2 (Backup Server) - with Veritas Backup Exec 2014 installed

A HP SAS Autoloader Tape Library is attached to and recognized by the physical server in Device Manger. However, it is not recognized on my VM Backup Server.  I cannot seem to add/attach the Tape library to my Backup server and I cannot find and the Tape Library listed in the Settings… > Add Hardware in Hyper-V Manger for the Backup Server VM.

What can I do to get my tape drive ‘attached’ and functioning on my Backup Server so that I can begin backing up my data?

Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.

Hyper-V hosted clients can't authenticate to network

I am running Hyper-V on Server 2012R2.  My server has three network connections. One for the Host OS, and two that Hyper-V manages with its virtual switch. All three connections are connected to  an 802.1x protected network. The Host Server OS is configured correctly and is getting IP OK, but none of the client OSes can get an IP address and are unable to authenticate despite being correctly configured in the OS. It seems like the Hyper-V virtual switch is maybe not passing the authentication requests back to the client OS, or the client OSes replies are not being sent to the network through the Hyper_V virtual switch??? At any rate, the virtual clients cannot get IP addresses and we can see the authentication failures along with the virtual MAC addresses in the 802.1x management console.

Does Hyper-V running on Server 2012R2 not support 802.1x?

If Hyper-V doesn't, can someone recommend a competing product that does?  I'm not married to Hyper-V if it is not capable of working in a standard enterprise environment.

duplicate IPV6 DUID in Hiper-V virtual network

I was configuring IPV6 on a network of VM's hosted in Hiper-V manager. I set up DHCPv6 server and observed 2 VMs connected to it. The VMs had different MAC addresses looking at the DHCPv6 server but ended up submitting requests with the same DUIDs. The DHCPv6 server reported an error and I had no connectivity over DHCP-assigned IPV6 addresses.

This looks like a bug in the component responsible for DUID generation. I suppose it is Integration Services. Is this a known problem? Any workarounds?

Thanks.

Can a cancelled VHD expansion cause data loss?

$

Hi All,

I initiated the expansion of a VHD after unmounting the drive in question from a VM (shutting down the VM was required). I then attempted to start the VM again however when I found that it was going to take too long to start I made the decision to cancel the VHD expansion. The expansion was going to take upward of an hour and I had to get the VM in question up and running within 15 minutes.

(when I clicked on 'Cancel' within the 'Expand Drive' progress dialog box there was no warning that doing so would cause adverse affects)

Once the 'Expand Drive' dialog box had gone I mounted the VHD again (which I had earlier tried to expand) and successfully started up the VM in a timely fashion.

I didn't give the situation any further thought until a colleague came to me and mentioned that data loss had occurred on our File Server. The data loss was from the VHD that I had tried to expand.

I have now been asked to explain what caused the data loss, and I want some honest opinions on what pressing the 'Cancel' button in the midst of an attempted VHD expansion will do.

Did my pressing the cancel button trigger the data loss or should I be looking at other potential candidates such as the health of the RAID array?

Any help or opinions here will be greatly appreciated.

Hyper-V 2012 R2 - Restart VMs after network/NAS/iSCSI failure

$

Hi there,

Is there a way to make sure all VMs on a Hyper-V Cluster, which are marked to autostart, actually restart after a severe network outage which completely disconnects all LUNs. Currently if iSCSI storage is disconnected from all nodes, Hyper-v trys to failover to another node, fails and then gives up.

When the storage comes back online the VM remains in the failed state until manual intervention or the whole server is restarted.

ESXi recognises storage disconnects and seamlessly restarts machines with storage interruptions once the storage comes back online.

Cheers

Configure VM to start without any users logged in after boot?

Environment:

Server 2012 R2 Datacenter

Hyper-V hosting one VM that is a pfSense firewall/router/gateway "appliance"

Question:

How do I configure this VM (or Hyper-V in general, since this is the only VM) to run ASAP following a host machine reboot without anyone logging in to Windows?

Currently the VM does not appear to run until the physical machine has a user logged in.  I have the VM setting enabled to start immediately with 0 sec delay, but this still seems to be contingent on an initial user login to the server.

Have i setup Hyper-V Teaming right with Virtual Switch?

Just some advise please, I had 8 VMs which were used on a training course and they ran a little slow at times (when you typed it took time to catch up). Everyone connected over a RDP connection to their VM and did some basic coding using IntelliJ, they also joined a hangouts video conference which will of also caused it to be a bit slow too.

The VM Host machine only had 2 network cards (1 for the management of server and other for Hyper-V), so I added 2 more network cards and used 3 of them to setup Teaming (further detials below) in Hyper V then created a virtual switch to use this Teaming network, I have now assigned this to the VMs, its hard to test it until the next course though so just want someone to confirm if this is correct way for load balancing?

No. of Network Cards in Team: 3 (3 x 1Gbps)

Teaming Mode: Switching Independent

Load balancing mode: Hyper-V port

Standby Adapter: None (all adapaters Active)

Any help appreciated :)

hyper-v console lost when these service stop iphlpsvc, ccmexec & vmms

Hey all.

I've got a 2012 R2 datacenter box that's running hyper-v on it. For the last while I've been seeing these services come to a stop; IP Helper (iphlpsvc), SMS Agent (ccmexec) and Hyper-v VMM (vmms). Once the hyper-v console stop working which then kills my backups of all my guest. There is no indication in the event viewer to pin point an issue. I'm using System Center Endpoint Protect on system as well but it did not work from preventing the the service from stopping.

Affect of a Hyper Visors Firewall on a VMs Firewall?

$

Hi All,

I have a broad question about the Firewall behaviour on a Hyper-V Hyper Visor.

Does the state of the Hyper Visors Firewall affect the VMs running under it? For example if I have a VM and I enable SNMP traffic on that VMs Firewall will the traffic be allowed through without any alterations to the Hyper Visors Firewall? Or alternatively do I also need to enabled the SNMP Firewall rules on the Hyper Visor as well to ensure that SNMP traffic can get out?

Any help here will be greatly appreciated.

Hyper-V Host Server failed, Spinning up new VM Server with old virtual HD. Server boots, loses gateway each time and no network. Frustrating.

I have a server 2012 host that just crashed, we were able to get the virtual hard drives for the servers that were on the host.

We built a new server/host running hyper-v manager.  Created new VM on the new host and used the same virtual harddrive from the previous host.  On the host, I only have one physical NIC, so I created a virtual switch in hyper-v manager (external) and it is running the host and the VM is pointed to it.  It should work

However, when I boot into the VM it takes 15-20 minutes at the please wait screen, another 10-15 minutes to logon and is sluggish, will not respond.  I boot into safe mode with network support and it logs in extremely fast.  I go into the network adapter settings, b/c I know it will not retain the IP address (static) from the previous build in the previous Host, and put the ip / gateway / subnet mask in as well as dns settings, reboot.  Same thing.

I boot back into safe mode, gateway is gone.  I try using the same IP address, it will not work.  I try putting a new, unused IP in, it then shows up with two IP addresses when I click on advanced.   I delete the old IP address out, leave just the new and it works..I can ping devices on my network and devices in other subnets.  I can surf the web, it works perfectly (in safe mode).

I reboot, same thing.  Even when I go back into safe mode, the gateway is gone and the old IP address is in use.

I'm at a loss, i need this server going immediately. I've tried deleting and re-adding virtual switches with no luck.  There's something tieing up the ip/network on this card and i dont' know what.

i've gone into device manager and shown hidden devices, the only thing I see that sticks out is there is a greyed out item called "RAS Async Adapter".  When I try to uninstall it, it verifies i want to remove and I click ok and it does not delete/does nothing.

I'm open to any suggestion/help.   This is a domain controller/VM for one of my elementary school sites, and I really do not wish to start over but that's my only next option.

Any help is greatly appreciated, thank you!

Hyper-V: Network: Initial connect to virtual guests fails/times out

$

Hi there,

I've been messing around with this problem since I don't know anymore so I need help.

I've got a Hyper-V installation on top of Windows Server 2012 R2 with two hardware nodes running in a failover cluster setup. So far everything seems to work fine except on little thing which is that when ever there was no traffic reaching one of the virtual hosts the initial network connect to any of them fails. In fact I think it times out.

Here's an example: Opening a webpage hosted on one of the virtual guests "hangs" until the browser gives up due to a timeout. As soon as I reload the page (or the browser by its own) it works.

Another example: Connecting to one of the virtual hosts using RDP client fails with a time out for the first try. A second one immediately after the first failed, works.

In terms of the network there is one router in between the systems (client/server) between which the problem occurs. The interesting part is the following: Being connected to the same VLAN the virtual guests are placed at with the client system, things work. If the client is placed in another VLAN, the problem occurs. Of course I did check what ever I was able to think of in terms of the routers (actual L3 switches).

Anybody ever seen problems like this?

Thx n greez.

Feature Request: vmconnect.exe full screen mode command-line switch

Hello Microsoft:

Please add a command-line switch to VMCONNECT.EXE to connect to a Hyper-V VM and go straight into full screen mode without having to do the keystroke sequence (my laptop and tablet don't have one of those keys anyway) or using the menu bar.

This should be pretty easy to add.   :-)

Thanks!

x64 Win 2008 SP2: Only Legacy NIC works

Have a HP Pro Liant ML 370 Hyper-V Host with a HP NC375i Integrated Quad Port Multifunction Gigabit Server Adapter, running on x64 Windows Server 2008 SP2 Core installation, Enterprise Edition.

Have created a new virtual machine and installed x64 Windows Server 2008 standard with integrated SP2 (Volume Licence, MSDN download DVD). The installation worked fine, the virtual machine gets an IP address, but IP v4  connectivity is limited: Can only ping the VM itself and the Hyper-V Host where the VM is running on, but no other machines.
- Have reinstalled the integration services, same problem.
- Have created a new VM with Windows XP SP3. This machine has no connectivity problems at all with a Standard Hyper-V NIC.
- Have removed the network adapter from the W2008 VM, added a "legacy network adapter", and the connectivity problem was solved!
- Have removed the "legacy network adapter", added a standard network adapter. After starting the W2008 VM, the machined detected a "Microsoft virtuakl machine bus network adapter #2", and the connectivity problem is here again!
- Have verified the eventlogs of the hyper-v host and of the Windows 2008 server guest. There is absolutely no hints why the guest has no connectivity.

My questions:
- Has anyone an idea why only a legacy network adapter is working on a x64 Windows 2008 server with sp2 VM?
- Before posting this, I googeled and found that problems like this can arise when "TCP offloading" features are enabled on a hyper-v host. Has anyone a hint how to disable TCP offloading on a hyper-v host that is running on server core?

Thank you all in advance for any help.
Franz

Exchange Servers part of 2 Failover Clusters

$

Hi- I have an Exchange 2013 deployment that is three VMs that are part of a DAG. My Network Admin thought it'd be a good idea to also add the DAG members to our main Failover Cluster. I told him that a node can only be a member of one FOC at a time (this is what I read in several threads/posts/articles).

Well, I looked at the main FOC and there I see my 3 Exchange Server VMs. And everything seems to be running without incident. So... can someone share some information as to why this is or isn't a good idea and any repercussions this may have on the deployment.

Thanx
