Hyper-V 2012 R2 - Restart VMs after network/NAS/iSCSI failure

$

Hi there,

Is there a way to make sure all VMs on a Hyper-V Cluster, which are marked to autostart, actually restart after a severe network outage which completely disconnects all LUNs. Currently if iSCSI storage is disconnected from all nodes, Hyper-v trys to failover to another node, fails and then gives up.

When the storage comes back online the VM remains in the failed state until manual intervention or the whole server is restarted.

ESXi recognises storage disconnects and seamlessly restarts machines with storage interruptions once the storage comes back online.

Cheers

Hyper-V replicas - lack of space

Hi,

I have a Hyper-V Server (H1) that replicates to another Hyperv Server (H2).
Having setup replication so that there are 20 recovery points, it turns out
there is not enough space on H2 to hold 20 recovery points. In this situation,
if I reduce the number of replication points to 10, will the space on H2 become
avaialbe automaticaly as HyperV moves to use 10 recovery points over the next
day or so or do I have to clear out the old unwanted replica data on H2 manually?
And if so what do I have to delete and what is the safe way to delete it?

Thanks

Step-by-Step configure Host Windows 10-pro with Hyper-V Virtual Server Network at-home training environment.

UUGGHHhhh... I am an IT student with a bit of a challenged learning ability...apparently.  I'm Learning Windows Server 12R2 and we are using Hyper-V environment in class.  I want to set up a training environment at home.  I have the needed ISO's and am great with installing them.  What I cannot get configured is the Initial Network connections between my Virtual Switch, My V-Server (which will be my parent domain) and my Host computer.  I want to have normal daily internet connections on my PC (WIN-10-Pro) and have my virtual network utilize the host PC's NIC/Router for network connections and be able to connect to the internet...but remain private.  I believe this is considered an "internal" connection.  Where there is great frustration is the IP settings.  my ISP has me set up for automatic DHCP, and my DFGW and DNS are the same.  I have looked and looked for the configurations steps beyond setting up a VS that include  the IP configuration on the VM and the Host....  I know its here somewhere!!! please assist.

Hi Guys,

Im tring to move a VM but i get the above error.

In testing if i move the VM to the same local server on the same disk array it works.

When i come to move it across the network to a 2nd HV server it errors?

Any ideas?

Both servers are 2012R2 on the domain using kerberos and compression in the performance options.

Thanks James

Live migration fails, quick migration succeeds

Hello,

I have a problem with my newly built Hyper-V cluster.
Live Migration fails one way.
I can live migrate from HYPERV1 to HYPERV2, but not the other way.
Quick migration works both ways.

Both servers are up to date Windows 2012R2 Datacenter editions.
I have disabled both the firewalls, error remains.
I get this error when I try to migrate:

Live migration of 'Virtual Machine TEST' failed.

Virtual machine migration operation for 'TEST' failed at migration destination 'HyperV2'. (Virtual machine ID A6BDB54B-84AD-4BA7-8927-3E87D5057C43)

User 'NT AUTHORITY\SYSTEM' failed to create external configuration store at 'C:\ClusterStorage\Volume1\Configuration': The trust relationship between this workstation and the primary domain failed.. (0x800706FD)

Does this sound familiar to anyone?

Host A     (ip:192.168.0.20) HyperV installed

VM1:

OS: MICROSOFT WINDOWS SERVER 2012R2

IP: 192.168.0.21

---------------------------------------------------------

Host B      (ip:192.168.0.22) HyperV installed

VM1:

OS: MICROSOFT WINDOWS SERVER 2012R2

IP: 192.168.0.23

VM1:

OS: MICROSOFT WINDOWS SERVER 2012R2

IP: 192.168.0.24

--------------------------------------------------------

Now the issue is i can not see vm's on different server from a server. for example i can not see vm1 and vm2 on host B from Host A.I am also not able to ping vm1 on host A from host B. ihave access to internet on all vm's.i can also ping all vm's from router!

Hi All,

Have windows 2012 R2 Hyper-V. I am Creating Hyper-V VMs on D drive which is 1000 GB of space. Now, I have created one VM with C-Drive 100 GB and D drive 900 GB. Actual D drive usage in to the VM was 600 GB and I deleted 200 GB DATA from the same D drive. So the actual D drive usage is now 400 GB but when I checked the VHDK corresponding to D drive, it is utilizing more than 650 GB on the base Hyper-V. Can anyone let me know why it is not reflecting actual utilization.

Just to add Disk Type is - Dynamically expand.

Is their any command for this?

I have a problem with the Azure Stack deployment.

It seams like the scripts fails in the process installing Hyper-V on  my host

I have tried to just deploy Hyper-V from the Powershell promt, and the initial install is fine

But after that the Server reboots and tries to add some updates/features and after app 10 min it fails, reboots

and uninstall the cahnges again, and after that reboots again, and is back to normal...

Any inputs will be nice

VM Domain Controller having issues : Need help pinpointing what's causing problems

Good morning,

I have a server that's continuously having issues and i'm having troubles troubleshooting what's causing it.

Host : Server 2012 Datacenter, running 2 Server 2012 VMs (1 being domain controller, 2 being an SCCM distribution point)

I had issues with this server last week, but ended up being caused by an incorrectly configured nic team.  I have since disabled the nic team and all seems to be working fine as we left Friday.

I get in this morning, and the server had frozen up, took 20-30 seconds to respond to commands and all the access points that use this server for DHCP could not connect/get an IP.  I couldn't get an IP as well plugged up to our core.

When I rebooted the host, once it came back up all was working perfectly.  This can't continue, and i'm not 100% what's causing it.

Any particular log files/events I that you recommend to find the core of this issue would be greatly appreciated.  I know this is very general, but hoping someone can point me in the right direction.  I'm currently looking at this and will be checking back for responses.  I'm open to anything.

Thank you!

Exchange Servers part of 2 Failover Clusters

Hi- I have an Exchange 2013 deployment that is three VMs that are part of a DAG. My Network Admin thought it'd be a good idea to also add the DAG members to our main Failover Cluster. I told him that a node can only be a member of one FOC at a time (this is what I read in several threads/posts/articles).

Well, I looked at the main FOC and there I see my 3 Exchange Server VMs. And everything seems to be running without incident. So... can someone share some information as to why this is or isn't a good idea and any repercussions this may have on the deployment.

Thanx

PCI Configuration read from NVMe Miniport driver in Windows 7 VM - Hyper-V

Hi,

We have developed a Storport based NVMe Miniport driver for our Qualification tool in Windows 7 desktop environment.
Driver reads first 512 bytes of PCI Configuration space registers for a custom feature. We are using StorPortGetBusData
function for this purpose.

This works well in Windows 7 Desktop environment.

We installed the same driver on Windows 7 Virtual Machine with Hyper-V and exposed NVMe SSD as Virtual Function to Windows 7 VM.But in Windows 7 VM, StorportGetBusData is returning valid values for first 256 bytes and zeros for remaining 256 bytes of data. Also we tried with IobuildSynchronousFSdRequest (with  PCI_WHICHSPCE_CONFIG). but same behavior is observed.

Kindly let me know whether there is any other API/method to read first 512 bytes of PCI Configuration space registers.
Also please let me know whether there is any other configuration do we need to change in Hyper-V?

Can I Reassign RAM to 3 Hyper-V VM's?

$

I have a Windows server 2008 R2 with 32gb RAM running 3 Hyper-V VM's. When setting these up, I only allowed for 8gb of memory for the combined VM's. One VM has 4gb while the other two VM's has 2gb RAM each. However, now I'm needing for each VM to run 4gb RAM each totaling 12gb.  Can this be done without rebuilding the VM's?  Please tell me yes. :-)

Can someone explain How the Process "Recreate All Virtual Desktop" in a Hyper-V Collection works?

1. Edited the gold image.

2. Checkpoint

3. Sysprep

4. Recreate all Virtual Desktops-What is it doing in the background?

 a. All current VMs is deleted and new one is created.

 b. What does "exporting the virtual desktop" doing after I clicked Create?

 c. I have 2 checkpoints, does it use the most current checkpoint and create new VMs?

Thank you

Hyper-V client Windows Update very slow

I have a server running Server 2012 R2 Datacenter, fully patched.

Yesterday and today when trying to apply this month's Windows Updates to some Hyper-V clients, it is very slow. Both Windows 8.1 and Windows 10 clients that had all previous patches are taking several hours to download the updates.

One of the Windows 8.1 clients took from 10:00 to 17:30. We are on 80Mbps broadband and there was no significant other traffic, or loading on the server.

The internal network is 1Gbps and copying a 2GB .iso image to the Windows 10 VM runs at about 60MBps.

Disable VHD Sharing (Cannot Create VHD, Sharing Not Supported)

I feel like I must be missing something obvious. I have a single standalone Windows Server 2012 R2 box with Hyper-V installed. I need to host a Linux VM for some tasks that require Linux. When I create the VM and use the wizard to create a VHDX (standard 127GB size, dynamic, default storage location C:\Hyper-V\Virtual Hard Disks). It fails with this message:

The storage where the virtual hard disk is located does not support virtual hard disk sharing.

I have no intention of using VHD sharing, how do I disable this so that I can create a VHD!

I've totally screwed up Hyper-V virtual server

I am an idiot, I admit that freely. I know very little about Hyper-V, and did not set up our server or virtual machines. Any abuse I get is probably warranted.

Here is what has happened:

Without warning, our virtual servers were all paused due to lack of disk space. I shut down our backup DC virtual server, as it wasn't essential and hey presto, 11 GB of space suddenly freed up. I deleted all snapshots listed for each server, and this seemed to work successfully.

A couple of days later, suddenly all running VMs paused again, I just manage to witness our main DC blue screen and die. D drive totally full again with only a handful of MB free.

We've got no extra disk space anywhere except the C: drive. I find some AVHD files dating back to snapshots that I thought I had deleted... and this is where I was stupid, I deleted them, thinking I was a hero for freeing up 80 GB or so.

Since then I cannot start our DC. I get constant errors about an error opening a virtual hard disk further down the chain.

I've tried to follow various suggestions on forums on the internet, but I don't know which AVHD files or even VHD files I should be choosing when going into Settings - Hard drives.

If anyone can give me any advice I would be eternally grateful.

I've also tried installing Diskinternals Unerase to restore the files - I managed to recover the AVHD files I deleted but copying them back in didn't help either.

Server 2012 Replication Error VHDX Replication Access Denied

I have a virtual file server that will not replicate due to the storage VHDX that is installed under the SCSI Controller as a virtual hard drive.  The drive contains all the file shares for the file server.  The VHDX was initially created on different VM which was the DC.  If i remove the VHDX the file server will replicate fine but not with the SCSI VHDX installed.   I have tried to put the SID of the VM all permissions seems fine the SID of the current host VM is listed under permissions.  I even created a new VHDX under Hyper-V manager and copied the contents under the Hyper-V manager but I still get the same General access denied error (0x80070005). Any help will be greatly appreciated.

Here are the Exact errors that I receive from the replication health maybe this may shed some light.
