Hi guys,

I  have just installed  Hyper-v 2012 R2 and trying to enable GPU pass-through support for VM.

And I noticed that there is a RemoteFX GPU on the hyper-v server setting page.

RemoteFX GPU is not same as GPU pass-through(directly pass the whole GPU to vm), am i right?

thanks for your help

Time Synchronization Issues

Hello,

I have 6 server 2012 R2 Hyper-V virtual machine DCs and 1 Physical DC. All of my virtual machine DCs are getting their time from outside except for the Physical. My physical DC is getting its time from a virtual  machine DC. I noticed a lot of the times are different on the virtual machines which is causing issues with my DHCP failover server . I have checked under management of the virtual machine DC time synchronization. Does this mean my DC is synchronizing with the host?

What is best practice should the time synchronization be checked or unchecked?

Connecting to a VM - Remote Desctop Users group

Hello!

I often use non-administratirve user accounts on my test virtual machines and never had any issues connecting to VMs with such accounts. Today, while being signed in to the VM called "Client" as User1 I got a message ~"Updates are ready... install and restart".

After restarting I can't sign in (by clicking "Connect to 'Client'" in the Hyper-V manager and signing in to a VM) as User1:

If I understand it correctly it means that prior to the update a user did not have to be a member of theRemote Desktop Users group in a guest's OS, but after the update he does. Is it by design or something went wrong?

Thank you in advance,

Michael

Unable to get a hyperv vm and a physical machine connected

Hi All,

I have a Hyperv setup running multiple machines connected to a hyperv "external" switch. I am trying to get an external machine talk to these vm's.

Hyperv vms <-> Hyperv host <- Network Hub -> Physical machine

The hyperv switch is set as external and configured to share the network card with the OS. All machines are in the same subnet.

I can get the hyperv vm to talk to the hyperv host. I can also get the hyperv host to talk to the physical machine. But I cant seem to get the VM's to talk to the physical machine.

IP of vm -> 10.0.0.1/255.0.0.0

IP of hyperv host -> 10.0.0.2/255.0.0.0

IP of physical machine -> 10.0.0.3/255.0.0.0

I have set Ipenablerouter regkey to true on the hyperv host. Still cant get them. Can someone tell me what I'm doing wrong here?

Event 3040 "VM Could not Initialize" when Win2012R2 Hyper-V host is joined to domain.

We cannot get any VMs to start on our new Windows Server 2012 R2 Hyper-V host when it is joined to the domain. Not even VMs that a newly created on local disks. Every time we get Event 3040 "VMName Could not Initialize <VMguid>".

We have:

  1. Confirmed hardware is good. Virtualization Technologies enabled in BIOS. (Brand new Dell R730 in this case, but the problem has also occurred on IBM and HP servers in company).
  2. Confirmed all SPNs are correctly set in AD an locally.
  3. Checked permissions as best we can according to several other articles.
  4. Confirmed NT VIRTUAL MACHINE\Virtual Machines has "Logon as a Service" and "Create symbolic Links" Rights.
  5. Confirmed Hypervisor is set to launch automatically in BCD.
  6. Created new VMs locally and tried to Start them - get 3040.
  7. Tried to connect to SAN based VMs - get 3040.
  8. Cleared Hyper-V caches in %ProgramData%
  9. Run BPA - only the usual warnings about backup etc.
  10. Tried Join/Unjoin/Install Hyper-V role in various combinations.
  11. Confirmed no Group Policies being applied that could affect this area.
  12. Monitored with ProcMon. Only clue was "Invalid Parameter" when trying to access .vsv or .bin files for test VM.

This behaviour only occurs when we add the host to the domain in preparation for Clustering.

Server is fully patched. no anti-virus installed, no firewall issues. Plenty of hardware capacity.

Are there any deeper logs we can interrogate?

Anyone got any clues, please?

Losing Access to Cluster Shared Volumes: Cluster Shared Volume 'Volume1' ('CSV Disk1') has entered a paused state because of '(c0000435)'

Hi,

Just built a Server 2012 R2 Hyper-V failover cluster connected to Equallogic 4110 storage arrays with latest firmware and HIT kits.
When creating a clone or vm from a template we see that the cluster loses access to the storage csv volume that is hosted on the equallogic storage with the following errors:

Cluster Shared Volume 'Volume1' ('CSV Disk1') has entered a paused state because of '(c0000435)'. All I/O will temporarily be queued until a path to the volume is reestablished.

Can anyone shed any light onto this issue?

USB Device appears as RAW in Hyper-V Core

$

I have a Dell server with Hyper-V Core hosting a Server 2012R2 VM as well a a couple of smaller Linux VM's.

I've plugged in a 6TB USB disk, which I formatted as NTFS with my Win 7 laptop, to use for backup. The disk shows up in the HV Host as Raw. I was going to set it off line in the HV Host and pass it through and mount it on the Svr 2012 guest.

Why doesn't the HV host see it as formatted? Is it too big? Does it not like the USB caddy? I would have expected the HV Host to mount it as drive D. Should I reformat the disk using a Win 8 or 10 machine?

Any suggestions...

Thanks in advance

Ken

2 vhd vs one vhd with 2 partitions

Hi,

I always use vhd for each partition needed.

I have one host 2008 on remote site that I need to use for additional service. It has one vhd 120GB with 2 partitions.

I feel that the better way will be just to wipe out second partition. Reduce vhd size to 60 GB for OS partition and add new vhd for the second partition.

But before doing that decided to ask... I guess from performance perspective there is no any gain. The VM running on RAID. So second partition on separate vhd will sit on the same RAID.

Is there something that I am missing?

HYPER-V on SSD Logs

Hello again.

A characteristic of the project is that HYPER-V will be installed in SSD.

Some recommendation on the logs? Would it be suitable to move them to LUNs in the shared storage?

What logs should it move?

Thank you!

New server, dynamic memory caused patches to fail when applied

I put up a new server with Dynamic memory and tried to install the first wave of 2012 R2 patches and they failed. Turned it off and they apply.

Is this common? Is dynamic memory safe to use?

Hyper-V Backup Suggestions

I have a very small 2012 R2 Hyper-V installation for a small business, basically a single server with a DC and File/Print. I know it is suggested that you backup up the VM from the host. However, I have also read that makes it difficult to restore individual files. VSS is in use and will be used most of the time to restore individual files, however, occasionally a file will need to be restored outside the window provided by VSS.

Given the small installation is backing up from the VM the best scenario? I typically use VMWare, but I threw this up for a friend since he is familiar with Windows.

Remote Access from 2012 R2 to 2012 R2

Hi,

Access from any Windows 2012 R2 server to any Hyper-V 2012 R2 host works if the account is in the localAdministrators group on the remote server.

Access from any Windows 2012 R2 server to any Hyper-V 2012 R2 host does NOT work if the account is in the localHyper-V Administrators on the remote server.

If I make the remote account part of the Administrators group, it works, I take the account out of Administrators, it stops working.

Whats wrong?

Please do not link me one of the 500,000 posts and blogs about accessing Hyper-V Manager remotely from Windows 7, windows 8, windows 8.1 or Windows 10, or server 2008 R2 to 2012 R2 or vice versa. I already read them all and all those issues don't apply here. I'm using the same version OS with Windows GUI (non core) version of Hyper-V on the remote hosts.

iSCSI - The GUID passed was not recognized as valid by a WMI data provider

Hi,

I recently added a third host to a hyper-v cluster. It is running different hardware. Now, on one of the older hosts, when I open the iscsi control panel, I show the connections as inactive even though the host is connected to the SAN, the VM on the host works fine and failover cluster manager reports the storage pool and disk to be on said host.

However, when I try to modify / add sessions / reconnect / add volums, I get the error "The GUID passed was not recognized as valid by a WMI data provider". Rebooting the hosts did not help as the issue appeared again.

Any idea how to troubleshoot that issue ? Where it comes from ?

Also, failover cluster manager and hyper-v are freaky slow to get settings, start/stop VMs, migrate between hosts, ...

Thanks for any insight you can provide,

Olivier

Cost of having resource metering enabled all of the time.

$

Hi,

This article seems to suggest there is 'no noticeable performance ' cost to enabling resource metering host wide. Does anyone have real world experience with this?

http://blogs.technet.com/b/virtualization/archive/2012/08/16/introduction-to-resource-metering.aspx

I would like to enable it on some high density hypervisors where CPU is not a problem and the VMs themselves are running on clustered (iSCSI) storage, so any I/O cost would be taken from the O/S disks (which is fine). Just be interested to hear from people who have done this.

Cheers,

NIC teaming fails as soon a Hyper-V Virtual Switch is created

I am running a Server 2012R2 and I implemented NIC teaming. Works perfectly with 2 physical NIC.

The moment  I create a virtual switch in Hyper-V, I loose network connectivity. I created the correct static IP's on the Hyper-V Virtual Ethernet adapter but even pinging the gateway does not work. Followed these guidelines, setting up the machine http://www.msserverpro.com/configuring-windows-server-2012-nic-teaming-to-a-hyper-v-virtual-machine/

Without the NIC teaming, all works perfectly when I create a virtual switch with just one NIC.

Any ideas

how to monitor resources and high availability?

Windows Server 2012 R2

my previous experience with VMs are with Oracle VM, only a few months ago we started with Hyper-V.

with Oracle VM, I was monitoring how the VMs are using up the resources (CPU, RAM, hd) like how much is left. there is also an option to configure high-availability such that when a VM encounters some problems it will try to relocate itself to another blade and restart itself. another feature is let's say I have VM01 and VM02, both created to be redundant of each, is that these two VMs will not locate themselves in the same blade (hyper-v server in this forums lingo).

i'm  trying to find the same feature/capability in Hyper-V, do I start with FailOver Cluster Manager only? how does Hyper-V or how can I find the resources being used by each VM? how do I tell the VMs not to be in the same hyper-v server?

as for the restarting itself I somehow found it in the properties settings but the other features I am unable to. yet.

appreciate any help.

Hyper-V Storage Migration Clean Up

$

I have noticed in Hyper-V 2012R2 when migrating a VM around it leaves behind an empty folder structure. Is there a way cleaning this up automatically after the successful migration?

For instance,

VM located at C:\clusterstorage\FOLDER_A\VM

Moved to C:\clusterstorage\FOLDER_B\VM

But.... The FOLDER_A\VM still exists after a successful migration. This should be deleted to prevent confusion and allow a VM if migrated back to FOLDER_A to reside in a folder called VM and not VM_1.
