Does online backup of virtual machines using Hyper-V VSS writer quiesce them in parallel?

$

I have 2 node Hyper-V Cluster with 1 CSV volume and 50 VMs. I am performing online backup of all VMs. The time to take VSS snapshot increases when I am backing up more VMs (components in VSS Writer). I know in online backup of virtual machines VSS Integration Component (IC) takes part inside VM to quiesce application running inside VMs.

My question: is the quiesce operation happens for all Virtual machine in parallel? If yes, why it takes more time to take snapshot when there are more number of Virtual machine?

R2 Hyper-V Allocates 1GB Total for ALL VMs

This is my third post about this issue. HP Proliant ML350 G6 with 12GB RAM and Intel Xeon Quad-core CPU; task manager shows more than 9GB free RAM.

First, installed R2 and then Hyper-V roll; second, installed first VM with 1024MB and it started and ran; third, installed second VM with 1024MB and both VMS started and ran. Rebooted server and now neither VM will start with more than 1024MB and both VMs will not start with total allocated RAM more than 1024MB, or both VMs will start with total allocated RAM less than or equal to 1024MB.

Options that do work are: Set both VMs to any combination totaling 1024MB or less and set 1 VM to 1024MB, then second will not start.

If first VM is allocated 1024MB and started then with any configuration of allocated RAM the second VM errors with:

"Insufficient system resources exist to complete the requested service (0x800705AA)".

I have rebuilt the arrays and reinstalled the host OS twice with the same results. After installing Hyper-V roll and 2 VMs with 1024MB each, they both start and run. After any subsequent reboots only one VM will start with 1024MB, or both will start with any combination of RAM equal to or less than 1024MB, and neither will start with more than 1024MB.

Can someone please help!!!!!!!

VM freezes sometimes

Hello, colleagues.

I faced a problem with Windows Server 2012 - OS freezes sometimes. OS is installed as a child partition on a Hyper-V Host Windows Server 2012.

There are following roles on the server:

  • File services (+FSRM)
  • IIS (for FTP)

DPM agent is also installed on this server.

A complication is that there are no errors in the Event Log (and on the VM and the Hyper-V host). When the OS freezes, no backup jobs are being executed.

Please help me with my problem.

Hyper V Virtual Machine Error: Cannot set/change the partition property

Hello. I have installed the Hyper V server role on Windows Server 2012 Enterprise edition. I am having trouble running my virtual machine. I have installed hyper V, opened the hyper V manager, and created a new Hyper V Virtual Machine. When I attempt to Start the virtual machine I keep recieving the following error message:

---------------------------

The application encountered an error while attempting to change the state on 'Windows8.1'.

'Windows 8.1' could not initialize.

Failed to set/change partition property: The system cannot find message text for message number 0xWindows8.1 in the message file for 67F2B048-AB08-4532-B844-39C5D7FC204B. '0x8007013D'.

(See Details Button)

'Windows8.1' could not initialize. (Virtual machine ID 67F2B048-AB08-4532-B844-39C5D7FC204B.)

'Windows8.1' failed to set/change partition property: The system cannot find message text for message number 0xWindows8.1 in the message file for 67F2B048-AB08-4532-B844-39C5D7FC204B. '0x8007013D'

------------------------

What I have tried to do is mount the virtual hard disk to a drive letter so it could find the hard disk. Ive been thinking that the problem is that the VID text file probably isnt installed in the proper location. I have found a file in the virtual machine folder that i created this machine that was named after the VID. Im not sure what the 0x8007013D is but I think that I have to put this into another folder somewhere. After successfully adding a drive letter nothing has changed. Please help me with this error message.

Get-NetAdapterVMQ displays VMQ enabled, but 0 queues available, while VMs are getting VMQ's

I have a Hyper-V host running 2012 R2, minimal interface.

VMQ related Powershell command fails to display VMQ stats, but VMQ appears to be working based on further investigation:

I decided to add the GUI, run updates, delete all my virtual switches, reset advanced settings on NICs, install driver updates, recreate my virtual networking, and see if Get-NetAdapterVMQ or Get-NetAdapterVMQQueue started to display stats again.  No change..On the other hands, Get-NetAdapaterSRIOV correctly displays all the assigned VF's.

Looking further:

First place I went to look was inside the configuration of the NIC, under advanced, virtualization, I checked how the VMQs and SR-IOV was divided up on each NIC.  33/30... so this wasn't the issue.  I could also see that VMQ's and VFs for SR-IOV were being correctly assigned to each VM.  Turn on and off VM, and I could see the Q's being assigned:

Inside the Hyper-V manager, I could see that VMQ (OK) was displayed and enabled for said VMs.  Within Event Viewer, there were no errors like I have seen on other hosts where VMQ was not being assigned to the VM:

This is very odd, in the past running Get-NetAdapterVMQ or Get-NetAdapterVMQQueue I could easily see all the stats for VMQ, but now the PS command is not doing it's job.

Any ideas? I'm concerned that things are not working correctly..

Memory utilization is very high when assigned dynamic for VM

Hi,

We are using a MSSQL DB server in one of the VM hosted in Hyperv Windows server 2012 R2 DC and assigned the 16GB dynamic memory. This server utilization is very high above 90% every time, In resource monitor, saying that SQL service is taking only 4GB and other process approximately 2 to 3 GB. I am not able to find out where the memory is dropped, so kindly help us to resolve this issue.

Find below the memory structure assigned for VMs and memory utilization report.

Memory assigned as dynamic:-

Startup memory : 16384MB

Minimum memory : 8192 MB

Maximum memory : 16384 MB

Memory buffer percentage : 20

Memory utilization showing in VM server:-

In use : 14.1 GB

Available : 1.9 GB

committed : 14.3/18.4 GB  Cached : 1.4 GB

Paged pool : 173 MB

non-paged pool : 59.1 MB

Dear Support

I am facing issue in Live Migration of Virtual Machine in Windows 2012 R2 Hyper-V Clustering. Below is the details for my Current Setup.

Two Windows 2012 R2 Datacenter same specs server (HV01 and HV02) both clustered

One virtual Machine created on Cluster Share Volume (c:\Cluster storage\....)

One Network card dedicated to Server Management -> 10.0.1.11 (HV01) and 10.0.1.13 (HV02)

One Network card dedicated to Hyper -V Virtual Machines -> 10.0.1.12 (HV01) and 10.0.1.14 (HV02) and allow management network option is disabled.

One Network Card for Heart Beat -> 10.0.20.1 (HV01) and 10.0.20.2 (HV02)

One Network card dedicated for Live Migration -> 10.10.10.50 (HV01) and 10.10.10.51 (HV02) and selected for use only for live migration in Fail over cluster network settings

I added the Virtual Machine to Failover Cluster successfully without any error and warning. When I am doing quick migration its working fine but when I am doing live migration its giving error 21502.

Kindly update what is wrong with my configuration

I have a 2012 R2 Server Core Hyper-V Host with a few guest VM running inside it.

When patch Tuesdays comes around I normally go to the command line an run sconfig and select to download and install updates and it always asks"Search for (A) all updates or (R) recommended updates"

What is the difference between  "All updates" and "Recommended updates" ?

Which is best practice install all updates or just the recommended updates?

Thanks in advance

Server 2012 R2 Crashes after Hyper V Role install

Hi guys,

first time posting so hope i've selected correct category!

I have done a fresh install of Server 2012 R2 on a host. The HDD was wiped clean and formatted.

It all seems good, loads up to Server 2012 R2 without any issues. Then when I have added Hyper V role through Server Manager -> Add Roles and Features, the server reboots a couple of times to complete installation, no error messages and everything seems good.

Then when installation is complete and the host tries to boot to the Server 2012 R2 it pops up a screen that there's an issue for like a second or so and reboots. It seems to be in a reboot loop all the time, gets to the same screen and starts again.

The only time you can get it to loads up is when you start it in Safe Mode.

When in safe mode I have tried to disable the Hyper V services and rebooted it. Same thing happened.

So i went to bios and disabled the Intel VT. This seemed to have helped it and server booted up ok.

But then when you enable everything back again , including VT in bios, same thing happens again and server wont start up.

I have tried to update BIOS and that didnt resolve the issue.

About the host:

CPU: Intel Xeon E5620 (x2)

Mobo: S5520HC

Any ideas what could be causing it?

Thanks for any feedback in advance! :)

hyperv VM replication frequency need to be change.

Hyper-v external switch VLAN

Hi guys,

I need your help for setting network in Hyper-V 2012R2/2016 TP3.

Case: New Host setup with 2 NIC's, "dumb" physical switch with Hyper-v 2016 TP3.

I already created a nic teaming, external virtual switch and attached 2 vnic's (one for managament and one for live migration)

I used the followind commands:

New-NetLbfoTeam "Team 1" -TeamMembers "Ethernet","Ethernet 2" -TeamingMode SwitchIndependent -LoadBalancingAlgorithm HyperVPort

New-VMSwitch “HPVswitch” -MinimumBandwidthMode Weight -NetAdapterName “Team 1″ -AllowManagementOS 0

Set-VMSwitch “HPVswitch” -DefaultFlowMinimumBandwidthWeight 50

Add-VMNetworkAdapter -ManagementOS -Name “Management” -SwitchName “HPVswitch"

Add-VMNetworkAdapter -ManagementOS -Name “Live Migration” -SwitchName “HPVswitch”

Set-VMNetworkAdapter -ManagementOS -Name “Management” -MinimumBandwidthWeight 5

Set-VMNetworkAdapter -ManagementOS -Name “Live Migration” -MinimumBandwidthWeight 40

So far, everything is working like a charm.

Set live migration using "Live Migration" vnic.

Issue: When live migrate a vm from one host to new host (Hyper-V 2016 TP3), traffic is handled by both vnic's (Management and Live Migration) instead of Live Migration vnic.

It seems that traffic is not isolated. How can i accomplish this? I have to use VLAN's? If so, please let me know how.

Thank you.

RAID upgrade project coming that involves virtual DC and virtual Exchange on Server 2012 R2

$

As the title states, I will be upgrading the RAID array in a Dell PE 2950 server.  The RAID card will be going to an H700 and all new drives.  I've done this once and it worked perfectly, but this time it involves a virtual DC as well as virtual Exchange 2013.  We have two virtual DC's - the one that is on this server is the primary which is doing DHCP and WINS and Azure Directory Sync.

This server is getting backed up by ShadowProtect which is creating incremental images every hour during business hours.  However, I would like to figure out up front if I need to scrap restoring the DC and demote it first, then create a new DC after the project is done.

If it is possible to backup and restore without getting into USN trouble, I would rather do that.  My process would be to shutdown the virtual Exchange server then the virtual DC.  Then create a full image backup of the physical server.  Then I would swap out the RAID card and drives, create the new RAID array, then do a full image restore.  Then boot up the virtual DC and Exchange.  No hardware changes will happen to the server except the RAID card and hard drives.

My goal is to do this sometime next week.  If there's anyone that can give me some guidance that has been through it before, it would be much appreciated.

Thanks,

Ron

Hyper-v failed to start

Hi everybody!!

I have a big problem, one of my VM can't start, I restored the VM but I think the problem is the physical server which is saturated with memory (30GB used on 32gb) but i can't restart because the others vm are installed on the same server. I put here my capture screen. If you know a way to find out the problem without restart you'd save my life

Thanks you

Hyper-V Cluster Using Virtualadapters help

$

Need some help with my Hyper V Cluster configuration?   Here is what I have setup to this point.

Windows 2012 R2 with HyperV and Failover Clustering configured.  I have 4 network adapters created in a team I then created a Virtual Switch with that Team NIC I then created 4 VMnetworkadapters  I used this Powershell to set all this up

New-VMSwitch “VSwitch” -MinimumBandwidthMode Weight -NetAdapterName “Team1" -AllowManagementOS $false

Add-VMNetworkAdapter -ManagementOS -Name “Management” -SwitchName “VSwitch”

Set-VMNetworkAdapterVlan -ManagementOS -VMNetworkAdapterName “Management” -Access -VlanId 50

Set-VMNetworkAdapter -ManagementOS -Name “Management” -MinimumBandwidthWeight 15

Add-VMNetworkAdapter -ManagementOS -Name “Live Migration” -SwitchName “VSwitch”

Set-VMNetworkAdapterVlan -ManagementOS -VMNetworkAdapterName “Live Migration” -Access -VlanId 200

Set-VMNetworkAdapter -ManagementOS -Name “Live Migration” -MinimumBandwidthWeight 25

Add-VMNetworkAdapter -ManagementOS -Name “Cluster” -SwitchName “VSwitch”

Set-VMNetworkAdapterVlan -ManagementOS -VMNetworkAdapterName “Cluster” -Access -VlanId 44

Set-VMNetworkAdapter -ManagementOS -Name “Cluster” -MinimumBandwidthWeight 25

Add-VMNetworkAdapter -ManagementOS -Name “VMLan” -SwitchName “VSwitch”

Set-VMNetworkAdapterVlan -ManagementOS -VMNetworkAdapterName “Server” -Access -VlanId 128

Set-VMNetworkAdapter -ManagementOS -Name “VMLan” -MinimumBandwidthWeight 35

I’ve assigned the following IP addresses Live Migration = 10.0.200.0/24 Cluster = 10.0.44.0/24 Management = 10.0.50.0/24 VMLan = 192.168.128.0/24

All servers on the network are in the 192.168.128.0/24 VLAN. All Hosts can see other servers on the vlan just fine and I can remote into the hosts without issue.

My problem begins when I create a new VM on the hosts and assign it to the VSwitch.  It will not get an IP address at all.  If I give it an IP on the 192.168.128.0/24 VLAN which is where I want it to be it will not communicate to any other device on the network.  I’ve done a ton of reading and I believe I have something setup wrong, I’m just not sure what it is.  I assume its something with having the VMLan configured on the VSwitch.  Most of the articles I read talk about just setting up 3 VMNetworkAdapters: CSV, Live Migration, and Management.  If I do that I’m not sure how to get the host to talk on the 192.168.128.0/24 VLAN  right now I have the VMLan adapter assigned a IP on that network so I can remote into it.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

What OS can manage a Hyper-V 2012 Cluster remotely?

I used RSAT in Windows 8.1 but since upgrading to Windows 10 I can't manage it anymore and need to find another solution.

So what OS can manage it remotely? I would like a RDS solution for management so pref a Server OS.

Im trying to use Xamarin Android Player.  However when trying to use it through Visual Studio the project won't build and I get this error.
@(Content) build action is not supportedTest.Droidc:\users\user\documents\visual studio 2015\Projects\Test\Test\Test.Droid\Properties\AndroidManifest.xml

I was told that disabling Hyper-V may be the solution, but I can't figure out how to do so.

We just rebuilt our machine with server 2012, and it was working flawlessly and then randomly it started giving me this error if i would try to start up a machine. At first this was just an annoyance but now it is worrying me greatly. I have tried everything from logging on as the domain admin account to the actual server administrator account. Nothing seems to start these machines up, and I need them to start.
