Dear Support,

how to download Hyper-V Integration Services for window server 2012? Thx!

mouse not captured when installing a new VM

Never had this problem before, but today am installing some new windows 2008 R2 Standard VM's and I have no mouse control.

says mouse not captured in remote desktop session.

obviously I cannot install integration services as there is no OS installed yet.

I can connect to any exisitng VM, and mouse control works fine, the issue is only occurring when trying to install window son to a new VM.
I presume integration services is supposed to be loaded by the installer.

Normally I only install Web edition and never had this issue before.

Dynamic Memory is not working all the time

We are in the process off moving our 2008R2 VM's from the 2008R2 HyperV servers to new Server 2012R2 Hosts.

We shut down the VM's copy the files and VHD's to the new CSV's en import the VM in the Hyperv Manager. Then we make them high available in the Failover Cluster Manager (Configure role - Virtual machine). We mount the integration tools and update the VM to version 6.3.9600.16384

For a specific type of VM (mostly RDS Host servers) we always had Dynamic Memory configured (when they were hosted on de 2008R2 platform), so we are using the same settings on the 2012r2 platform. The memory settings were;

Startup memory: 1024 MB

Minimum memory: 1024 MB

Maximum memory: 12288 MB

These VM's reboot every morning, this is done for specific reasons. But now once in a while (once per week/2 weeks) we notice that the VM's are not using more memory then 1024 MB while the demand is much higher. Rebooting the server helps most of the times, live migrating to another host also helps. In the VM we see that memory usage in the taskmanager is 99-100%, and after the move it immediately starts using more than the minimum configured amount.

Until the failover the memory usage was 1024 MB and it did not get any higher.

This happened several times. Last week we changed the Memory configuration to:

Startup memory : 2048 MB

Minimum memory: 2048 MB

Maximum memory: 12288 MB

But this morning we had a call about the performance of one of the VM's, We saw that it was only using 2 GB memory while the demand was much higher. After live migrating it to another host it started using more memory immediately.

The 2012R2 hosts are not overcommited, there is a lot of memory still available for the VM's. Those VM's never had this problem on the 2008R2 Hyperv platform.

Any idea why this happens?

VM loses network connection following Live Migration

I’m having an issue after Live Migration where VMs are intermittently losing their network connectivity for up to 90 seconds, then it returns without intervention. It doesn’t seem to matter which hosts are involved in the Live Migration, although moving from node 2 to node 3 seems to have less frequent issues.

4 node Hyper-V cluster running W2012 R2 Data Center on DL580 Gen8s. Fully patched and with recommended Hyper-V and Failover Clustering hotfixes. I’m aware of the issue with intermittent connectivity with Broadcom 1Gbps NICs, but believe it is resolved in the drivers we’re using (latest from Broadcom – 17.2.0.0). Additionally, VMQ confirmed as disabled on all NICs.

Network setup on hosts:

HV_HM – single NIC used by host only. Production network subnet

HV_CSV – 2 NICs teamed using LBFO. Set to LACP and Dynamic. Backend network on 192.168.5.0/24 subnet

HV_LM – 2 NICs teamed using LBFO. Set to LACP and Dynamic. Backend network on 192.168.6.0/24 subnet

Backup – single NIC with virtual switch BKUP-NET. Management OS allowed to use. Backend backup network on 192.168.1.0/24 subnet

vEthernet (BKUP-NET) – virtual NIC for backing up host. Backend backup network on 192.168.1.0/24 subnet

VM – 2 NICs teamed using LBFO. Set to Switch Independent and Dynamic. Virtual switch VM-NET with management OS not allowed to use. Production network subnet

Connections to the backend networks are 1Gbps into Cisco 3750 switches, which are managed by our own Networking team. These are stacked. Connections to the Production network are 100 Mbps into Cisco 3750 switches, which are managed by a 3rd party. I don’t know if the 2 switches involved are configured as a stack or not.

For the VM team members on each host, nodes 1 & 2 have 1 team member on one switch and the other team member on another switch. For nodes 3 & 4, all VM team members are on the same switch.

If I move a VM that has a vNIC on the VM-NET virtual switch and a vNIC on the BKUP-NET virtual switch and have pings going to both of its IP addresses, the BKUP-NET IP consistently responds. The VM-NET IP is the one that drops after Live Migration; sometimes with a time out then a destination host unreachable, other times straight to destination host unreachable.

If I run an arp -a before the move I can see the MAC for the VM. When it has an issue after migration, the ARP cache on the host shows the MAC address while the pings are timing out, then when it changes to destination host unreachable, the IP and MAC address for the VM are not listed in the cache.

The only differences I can think of between the non-working VM-NET connections and the working BKUP-NET connections are the Teaming Mode of the NICs on the host; and potentially the port/switch configuration, which is a black box for me for the problematic VM-NET connections.

My feeling is that it could be a switch configuration issue, but I’m not sure what settings to have the 3rd party check. Has anybody seen a similar issue or have any thoughts on how to progress please?

failed to unregister the virtual machine with the virtual machine management Service

Hi guys,

I'm running Hyper-v 2012R2 and I'm getting:

failed to unregister the virtual machine with the virtual machine management Service

pretty much on most of the VMs in one of my cluster nodes. I cannot reboot the host as I can't live migrate/quick migrate VMs to other healthy ones.

any idea?

I'm also using VMM 2012R2

Non unique MAC addresses when creating VM NIC on ManagementOS

Hi

I've just hit a problem configuring hyper-V server 2012 using powershell and I'm hoping someone can help

Scenario:

  • A pair of intel X520 10G nics  configured as a Team using native windows teaming.
  • a vswitch connected to the team
  • a vmnetworkadapter added to the vswitch with the -managementOS flag to allow the host OS to use it.

The vnic is created with a mac address of 00-15-5d-00-00-00 on every server.

assigning a static address solves the immediate problem but is not an acceptable solution.

Any ideas ?

VM hard drives detected as Thin Provisioned Drive

Hi,

We have some VM that we cannot defrag because their virtual hard drives are detected as "Thin Provisioned Drive". When we setup this drives, we used a Dynamic VHDX, but due to fragmentation on the host disk, we converted all VHDX to Fixed.

It seems that the guess OS is still detecting the virtual disks as thin provisioned, so we cannot defrag them unless we use the command line tool defrag.exe.

Is there any solution?

Thanks,

Enric

Manual Merge on 2008 R2 Host

I have one question that i am unsure of and then maybe some clarification on a couple things since i'm a hyper v newb.  In order to do a manual merge by renaming the AVHD file , does the VM need to be powered OFF before doing this or can it be left running?  The host is a 2008 R2 Enterprise server.  Also, how big can a snapshot be before it's too big to merge?  I have two snapshots on a critical VM and neither shows up in the snapshot box under the VM.  Any help or suggestions are surely welcome.  Thanks

Hi

I have a windows server 2012 r2 server with hyper-v feature enabled integrated to active directory.  I have another windows server 2012 r2 with hyper-v enabled but not integraded to active directory in a remote location.  I can connect to the remote server via remote desktop connection. If I want to enable replication between the two what can i do to integrate the one on the remote location to active directory?  RODC or Federation Services?

HyperV 2012 R2 Core (Memory Out of Bounds)

Hi,

I have an interesting case.

I need to understand how the HyperV 2012 R2 Core manages the free memory for the VM Guest, during the creation process.

I have two servers with HyperV 2012 R2 Core with identical hardware. Both with 32G.

Server 1
- After upgrading to 64GB, it does not increase the free memory of the VM Guest up to 29GB.

Server 2
- The other server strangely, left increase to 32G memory the VM Guest.

PS: I'm not using dynamic memory.
PS: By checking the MSINFO32 both servers 1 and 2 show that have 64GB.

I did some laboratories
- I installed a Core 2012 R2 HyperV with 1G Host Physical. When I try to create a VM Guest, he says (out of bounds) I specify the number between 32 and 32.
- I installed a Core 2012 R2 HyperV with 2G Host Physical. When I try to create a VM Guest, he says (out of bounds) I specify the number between 32 and 856.
- I installed a Core 2012 R2 HyperV with 4G in Physical Host. When I try to create a VM Guest, he says (out of bounds) I specify the number between 32 and 2642.

Is there some setting that must be done after making a memory upgrade on HyperV 2012 R2 Core, for it to release resources for upgrading the VM Guests?

Thank you.

Identify NIC's

Hyper-V 2012 R2. NIC's are NOT teamed. In hyper-v manager, we have a vm that has 3 NIC's attached to the vm. In the OS of the vm, 1 NIC is disabled, 1 NIC is for the LAN and 1 NIC is for the replication network. They show in network sharing center as Local Area Connection, Local Area Connection #1 and Local Area Connection #2.

We need to remove the disabled NIC both from the OS and hyper-v manager. So we remove the right NIC, how do we identify which NIC in hyper-v manager corresponds to which NIC in the OS? Then the correct way to remove the NIC from the OS?

Windows 10 Build 10240 Managing Hyper-V on 2012 R2 Datacenter Cannot Connect

$

So, we have a total of six Hyper-V servers in our environment. All six were installed from the same Server 2012 R2 Datacenter ISO. I have been managing these from my Windows 8.1 machine with no issues. I got ahold of Windows 10 build 10240, and I am running into an issue connecting to the servers now.

The strange thing is that I CAN connect to one of them. I cannot figure out what is different on this one server from the other five. Windows updates maybe? I migrated all the VMs off one of the servers I cannot manage remotely, performed all Windows Updates, and I still cannot connect to it.

I am reading that Windows 10 should be backward-compatible with managing Hyper-V on 2012, but on connection, it appears a WMI namespace is missing that the Windows 10 tools are trying to connect to.

I am not trying to use alternate credentials (I read this will NOT work from 10 to 2012 R2). Any ideas why this is not working? Several Google searches have not told me anything so far. I realize Windows 10 has not officially been released yet, but a few of us are testing the waters for compatibility issues.

I would appreciate any help anybody can offer.

Hi all,

I just configure hyper-v  internal virtual network, my host has 2012 dataenter r2 it installed AD,DNS host ip address is 192.168.101.25, within this host i installed hyper-v and it has two 2012 datacenter core virtual pc and two 2012 datacenter full gui virtual pc, i set one full vpc ip address as 192.168.101.26 and other 192.168.101.27 both this server put dns as my host which is 192.168.101.25 i try to ping this two vpc it show me the resultdestination host unreachable but 0% lost same thing happen when i ping each vpc to host i want to know what is the reason for this?, am i done something wrong?

I try to make one of my vpc as domain controller (domain is in my host domain name is ABC.com) when i put my domain name in there it show the messageAn active directory domain controller (AD DC) for the domain "ABC.com could not be contacted, what is the reason for this message and is it related to above question i asked

Waiting for help.....

What can and can't be converted to a VM template?

$

Just as the title says. Is there a list of Microsoft products that can not be templatized?

For instance, obviously we can templatize a Windows Server as long as we sysprep it.

My main question is about the software\roles\features installed on that server.

For example, Microsoft Exchange I can already safely assume that that can not be templatized because of how deeply its integrated into AD.

However how about other services such as IIS or SQL to name few?

Any feedback or suggestions will be greatly appreciated.

Interrupted VM stuck

I was doing updates on my 2012R2 Hyper-V VM and power dropped. When I booted my host PC back up the VM would start and say Hyper-V Updating your system (x%) and get stuck at 5%. I can't get past this and I have no snapshots/backups of the VM. Is there anyway to recover this VM?

FIle copy to VM network spikes (Hyper-V Server 2012)

$

Hello,

I am experiencing a strange problem on my VM's, when i copy a larger file (over 10GB) the file copy starts alright, and speed is good (60-100MB/S), but then suddenly, kind of random, the speed drops and the connections kind of spikes on the target VM.

I have tested my connection to my ISCSI storage, and if i try to copy directly to my CSV speed is good, around 200MB/S, so the problem must be either on the VM NIC or the VM network.

The problem is the same on either one of my cluster hosts (i have 3) , i use SCVMM, if that makes a difference in this case, even though i wouldn't think so.

VMQ is disabled - so that's not the problem.

Thanks!
