An error occurred while trying to retrieve a list of virtual switches!

Dear Friends,

This is my 1st post on microsoft hyper-v community as i have been eating and breathing hyper-v from the past few months. I have intensive experience with VMware 4.0-5.5 and now looking to get my hands dirty on Hyper-V.

So here is the situation, i have a laptop running i5 Processor with 8GB memory installed and 500GB hard drive with two network adapter one wired and other wireless.

Installed VMware WorkStation 11 and provisioned TWO hyper-V 2012 hosts. One with the Server 2012 R2 with GUI named HyperV01 and 2nd one is simply a Hyper-V 2012 Server  named HyperV02.

Plan of action is to test live migration, replication, storage migration and clustering.

So HyperV01 running x1 linux machine and replicating to HyperV02 successfully.

Problem:

When i try to boot up the vm on hyperv02 it doesnt boot up.

When i connect to HyperV2 using hyperV manager and click vitual Switch Manager i get the following error message.

An error occurred while trying to retrieve a list of virtual switches

Interestingly enough when i run the Get-NetAdpater command in the powershell of HyperV02 it shows me the NIC with the Status UP?

thank you in advance for all your suggestions.

Does Hyper-V support the Intel E1000 based network adapter in the future?

At the moment, Hyper-V provides two types of virtual network adapters — a network adapter and a legacy network adapter.
The legacy network adapter is based on the DEC 21140 10/100TX.
My question, is there a plan to support the Intel E1000 based adapter in the future?

Thanks for replay.

Kind regards, Roger

Standalone Hyper-V is too painful to use

This is really a complaint not a question.  I've been using the free version of VMware ESXi for development testing for years.  I keep reading about how Hyper-V is catching up to VMware in features.  I was excited about the free stand-alone version and decided to try it out.  I downloaded the Hyper-V 2012 RC standalone version and installed it.  This thing is a trainwreck!  There is not a chance in hell that anyone will ever use this thing in scenarios like mine.  It obviously intented to be used by IT Geniuses in a domain only.  I would really like a version that I can up and running in less than half an hour like esxi.  How the heck is anyone going to evaluate it this in a reasonable manner?  I feel like it was just thrown out there so Microsoft could claim they have a free virtualization server like MS?

Steps for free ESXi.

1. Download from website burn to CD/DVD.

2. Boot from disc, follow steps to overwrite hard drive and install.

3. After reboot, config management IP address.

4. Go back to my desk and open my web browser to Management IP and download client.

5. Install ESX client and start running VMs!

Steps for Hyper-V

1. Download from website burn to CD/DVD.

2. Boot from disc, follow steps to overwrite hard drive and install.

3. After reboot, config management IP address.

4. Scour the internet for server tools that install the Hyper-V management snap-in for Win 7.

5. Install server management tools pack.

6. Go to add/remove and enable the Hyper-V snap-in.

7. Open Hypver-V snap-in and connect TRY to connect to box.

8. Receive generic authentication error message.

9. Spend several hours scouring the internet looking for registry hacks, firewall hacks that actually allow you to connect to a damn hyper-v box!

10. Eventually you come across the website/project. http://archive.msdn.microsoft.com/HVRemote

This site walks you through all the script changes/reboots you have to make to connect to bloody hyper-v!

Here is what I would prefer

I don't want to download any tools at all.  I just want a HTML5 web server on this box that allows me to do everything I can from the  Hyper-V console and doesn't make me configure anything other than a password.  It would be great if it was themed similar to the new Windows Azure Virtual Machines console.  I doesn't have to provide like a built-in viewer to actually interact with the VMs, I would be happy with a remote desktop style connection.

Packets sent out the wrong Interface on Hyper-V 2012 Failover Cluster

Here is some background information:
2 Dell PowerEdge servers running Windows Server 2012 w/ Hyper-V in a Failover Cluster environment.  Each has:
1 NIC for Live Migration 192.168.80.x/24 (connected to a private switch)
1 NIC for Cluster Communication 192.168.90.x/24 (connected to a private switch)
1 NIC for iscsi 192.168.100.x/24 (connected to a private switch)
1 NIC for host management with a routable public IP (*connected to corp network) w/ gateway on this interface
1 NIC for Virtual Machine traffic (*connected to corp network)
All NICs are up, we can ping the IPs between servers on the private network and on the public facing networks.  All functions of hyper-v are working and the failover cluster reports all interfaces are up and we receive no errors.  Live migration works fine.  In the live migration settings i have restricted the use of the 2 NICs (live migration or cluster comm).

My problem is that our networking/security group sees on occasion (about every 10 minutes with a few other packets thrown in at different times) syn packets that are destined for the 192.168.80.3 interface goes out of the public interface and is dropped at our border router.  These should be heading out of the 192.168.80.x or 192.168.90.x interfaces without ever hitting our corporate network. Anyone have an idea of why this might be happening?  Traffic is on TCP 445.

Appreciate the help.

Hyper-v Replica merge error

I enabled hyper-v replication on one of our hyper-v servers.  Neither the guest VM nor the Hyper-V host server have anti-virus enabled.  Towards the end of the replication process, I got the error below.  The odd thing is that there does not appear to be any data loss in our database that runs on that server, I shut down and restarted the VM and it works fine, and the record for the snapshot is gone from the Hyper-V manager.

The AVHDX file is still there but is not attached to the VM and is not being written to.  Updates are being written to the parent VHD file.

Any suggestions on what, if anything, needs to be done would be appreciated.

background disk merge failed to complete: The process cannot access the file because it is being used by another process. (0x80070020). (Virtual machine ID 3A9D7E8D-C9C9-4E68-8CFF-E1BF007BB5DF)

SOFS as a VM on a HyperV Host passing through the local disks

I am looking at an existing environment being repurposed for VDI and trying to get the best use of the local disks in the Hyper V hosts.  There are 8 hosts in each datacentre, if a host has 6 disks is it valid to have Hyper V on a pair in RAID1 and then the other 4 as RAID? passed through to a VM on each of the hosts as a SOFS or as storage spaces?  This would allow 8(hosts) X4(HDDs) X300GB X2(DCs) to be used for things like User Profile Disks and Templates

Restoring Hyper-V VMs after Hyper-V Host failed and was reinstalled.

Hi;

I am working on a server where the Host OS was corrupted so I had to reinstall it. I do not have a backup of the VMs with me.

The old files were placed in Windows.old and I can see them the problem is that it seems that all of the changes to the VM are scattered rather than in one VHD. So I can make the previous VHD the HDD but I only get data within the first week of creating the original VMs. I see other HRU,HRL and AVHDX files in the folder which have a much more current date but I cannot access them.

The replica server is at another location and went down at the same time so I can't use it right now.

Any idea how to get a current VM up and running would be appreciated.

Unknown Device Migrating from 2008R2 VM to 2012R2 Hyper V

I migrated a VM from a 2008R2 host to a test box running 2012R2. Everything seems to work, but I am seeing unknown devices in the guest OS (Windows 2008R2 32-bit). 4 are vmbus which MS says I can safely ignore. The other is a Hyper V Gen counter V1. I do not know what this is and if it is safe to put a machine in production with this device driver missing.

Please advise and thank you.

Slow Network File Transfers From Hyper-V Server 2012 To Client PCs

$

All,

Over the past weekend I just finished moving our SBS 2008 system to an Essentials 2012 R2 system hosted on Hyper-V.  Everything seems to be working fine except for RWA (another post) and this storage issue all client PCs are experience.  Any client PC that attempts to open or transfer files from the server is extremely slow.  For instance, I tried copying a large single file from the share to my local drive and I get a transfer speed of less than 1MB a sec. In most cases, it starts out much lower about 150KB and will eventually creep up to the 1MB if its a large enough file.

If I try the same transfer above from the Server (Hyper-V hosted instance) I get 350MB a sec.  If I try from the server to server using the share instead of the local stroage I still get the 350MB.  However, if I go back to the Hyper-V Host and try to grab it from the share I get the 1MB a sec.

I added a 4 port NIC CARD in addition to the standard NICs so Each VM will have its own NIC - this is the only VM at this time.  For the virtual switch I have set it up as an extrernal network, selected my Broadcom NetExtreme Gigabit Ethernet, allow management operating system to share adapter is checked, and I enabled single root i/o virtualization was also checked.

This is a brand new Dell T430 server with 64GB RAM, 16 physical cores - the VM is on a Raid 1 480GB SSD and the local storage is a Raid 5 with 3 drives of 900GB each.  This local storage is what is exposed to the VM and being shared.

Any help on diagnosing or resolving this issue is greatly appreciated.

Thanks so much!

AVMA Keys in a cluster

I have a 2 node cluster where some virtual machines are saying they aren't activated even though they were using AVMA keys about a year ago. I suspect when entering the key the VM licenses against the host it is currently residing on then if it moves to another host for a long duration it is no longer activated.

Can any validate tjis and/or tell me how to use AVMA key on guests running on a cluster?

A client fails to export.

The host is Windows Server 2012, all patches current. The server is a HP DL 280 G6. The export destination is a local drive with 968GB of free space.

The client is Windows Server 2003 - all patches current. No snapshots, The VM is 9GB with a max size of 128 GB. The client boots and runs normally.

I am able to export other clients on this host without incident.

The pop-up message is:

I cannot find any debugging information. There is no error code. I cannot find any log entries. Can anyone point me to how I can debug this problem?

Thanks, in advance for any help.

Hyper V Home Lab?

I'm in need of creating Hyper V virtual machines. Need your suggestions on how to do that,

I'm running Windows 10. Turned on HyperV Feature. Created External Virtual Switch. While creating VM I've chosen the Network Switch created in the previous step.

I now have VM & Internet is also working in that. But, I can only take RDC[Remote Destop] of it when connected to Internet & not when Internet is not available.

Please help me whether I've done properly or not. What else needs to be done to connect[Remote Desktop] VM without Internet. Any other steps that needs to be performed.

Does the HYPER -V manager uses WMI calls?

Hi

I would like to know if HYPER-V manager UI uses WMI calls for interaction? I need to know the parameters passed by the WMI call at the time of addign a VHD to a SCSI controller. Is there a way I can see those calls?

Thanks

[2012 R2] VMQ Configuration

Hi,

This is the first time I'm configuring a Windows Server 2012R2 Network Team Switch Independent Dynamic with VMQ.

VMQ has been activated on each physical interface but I'm not sure about which additionnal configuration I should realize.

I'm using an Intel Xeon E5-2630 (6 Cores, 12 Logical processors).

I know I have to use "Sum of Queues" and I read that I shouldn't use processor 0 and 1.

As I'm using 3 physical interface for my Network team, can you confirm me I must use the following command :

Set-NetAdapterVMQ –Name "Ethernet 2" –BaseProcessorNumber 2 –MaxProcessors 4

Set-NetAdapterVMQ –Name "Ethernet 3" –BaseProcessorNumber 6 –MaxProcessors 3

Set-NetAdapterVMQ –Name "Ethernet 3" –BaseProcessorNumber 9 –MaxProcessors 3

The result of my Get-NetAdapterVmq before any additionnal configuration

Template creation question

Hi,

I have been asked to create some Hyper-V VM's and am kinda new to the process. Had a few questions about the process in general.

1) To facilitate reuse I would like to work with templates. I have two server environments and both have Hyper-V installed - DEV and PRODX. If I create a template image in my DEV environment, can I just copy the template over to PRODX and then create a VM on PRODX by cloning the now local template. I am only using Hyper-V manager and not System Center, etc.

The goal is to create required templates on DEV and then import into PROD.

2) Are the number of CPU's selected in a template fixed when used as a base for a VM? Can I change them after the VM is created? What parameters (hardware or software), if any, are inherited and cannot be changed in VM created from a template?

3) Any recommended book on HyperV admin in particular (Host OS 2008 and 2012)? Is Powershell the defacto language for Hyper-V automation?

Thanks for any guidance,

V
