Hyper-V Role installation fails without reason (Windows Server 2012)

Hi,

We are building a new Hyper-V infratructure, based on Windows Server 2012 Datacanter and multiple HP ML350p Gen8 servers. We've been deploying lost of Server 2012 Hyper-V projects lately (all HP G6 servers), without any problems at all, but this project is a real pain:

We are unable to install the Hyper-V role on any server, at all! There's four of them! All hosts are HP ML350p Gen8, Server 2012 Datacenter, latest updates/firmware/drivers (HP SPP 2012.10.0). BIOS settings are correct/verified for virtualization.
We simply install Hyper-V via Server Manager without any modifications (not selecting any network adapters either, this is all done later using Virtual Network ).

The installation reboots the server, and during boot, the installation fails. After reboot, the Server Manager sais there's been an unexpected error, and have a nice day.

I've been digging through the CBS.log file, and there a very small ERROR portion during installation:

no networking after syspreping server 2008 sp1 r2 vm

Hello,

I have an issue with networking in VM-2008sp1r2 after sysprep.

When start up new VM with syspreped vhd the ip is 169.x.x.x.

The initial machine (before sysprep) didn't have a static address.

I tried to disabale NIC in VM settings before sysprep. Rerun integration services and some other stuff.

Nothing helps.

I found a thread with exactly same issue. The conclusion is that only 2008sp2 has this anomally.

http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/winserverhyperv/thread/2275abfb-2328-4075-852a-7fa5a0387fe4?persist=True

But I am running 2008sp1r2.

Any suggestions?

Thanks.

Will Hyper-V slow down my PC (Windows 8) while not running?

All,

Will Hyper-V slow down my PC (Windows 8) while not running on my PC. I am new to using any type of virtual machine.

I was told that Hyper-V will slow down my PC if Install on my machine even if I am not running it (Hyper-V has a bunch of system drivers running in the background).

The guy said I should run VMware (I am thinking the guy just loves VMware and hates anything else).

Please provide your comments.

Thanks,

Server 2008 R2 SP1 and Virtual Networks on Hyper-V

I am running a single physical server -- a Dell PowerEdge T410 -- with Server 2008 R2 SP1 as the parent OS. I have 2 physical network cards configured with 2 static IP addresses (#.#.9.132 and 9.133 respectively). I want to use the first (9.132) as the NIC for the parent (NIC1) and the second (NIC2 = 9.133) for the 4 virtual machines I am going to run as guest (or child) OSes. I brought up the parent and updated the OS to current. I configured the 2 NICs (for IPv4 only) and had internet access on both. I then added the Hyper-V role and chose NIC2 as my virtual network (an external network).  As expected, NIC2 now shows only the Microsoft Virtual Network Switch protocol enabled and I have a new "Virtual network" connection with the IP address of 9.133 -- all of this sounds reasonable and expected to me. The problem is that I don't get internet access on the virtual network connection -- every time I look at the properties, the DNS address is blank. I re-enter it and reboot and it still comes back with no DNS address.

It seems like I dealt with this once in the past, but I can't find the solution. What am I missing in this process?

TIA

Slow Internet After Add Virtual Internal Adapter ?

Hey,

I have been playing around w/ Hyper V, etc, and I added a VM with Windows Server 2012.  I created an Virtual Network Switch (internal).  I am running a domain controller on the VM.  So, the host machine now has 2 LAN connections (1 Internet to my Wifi Router, and 1 Internal (mydomain.local).

It seems like ever since I added this 2nd intranet LAN on the host PC, my public internet browsing has slowed down.  For example, when the network adapter (vEthernet VLAN Internal) is enabled, my browsing to public internet sites (msdn, etc) is slower than when the vEthernet adapter is disabled.

Any ideas what this could be, and how to troubleshoot?

I noticed that if I execute "tracert www.google.com", when the VLAN is disabled, it prints out the hops pretty quickly.  But, if I have the VLAN enabled, and do the same command, it prettys out each of the hops very slowly.

Question about the HyperV 3.0 Internal Virtual Switch

I was just testing a bit with Hyper-V a bit in my lab and I found out that if you create an Internal Hyper-V virtual switch it gets assigned an 169.*.*.* IPv4 Address. I know from the past the 169.*.*.* range was for APIPA address range. Why is it now leveraged on a Hyper-V internal virtual switch?

Whenever I attempt to connect to my virtual machine after installing RemoteFX, I get the following error: "The remote session was disconnected because there were network problems during the licensing protocol."

I am running Server 2012 on the following hardware, with Windows 7 Ultimate as the VM.

  • NVIDIA 560TI
  • 8GB RAM
  • 400GB HDD

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

HyperV server backup

I have a Server 2008 R2 Enterprise machine with Service Pack 1 running as a HyperV host to 3 guest servers, which are all Server 2008 R2 Enterprise machines as well.  When I try to run a backup, it fails.  After it fails, I am getting between 500 - 600 processes running in task manager which freeze my HyperV host server.  The 500 or processes are alldrvinst.exe.  Eventually, these processes all quit after some time and the server becomes responsive again.

In the backup, I am chosing "different options" on the first screen, then the "custom" option, then the "Bare metal recovery" option, which selects everything. I also choose "VSS full backup" ... as this is my only backup method.  I am trying to back up everything to an external usb drive.  I have tried to run it with the "VSS copy backup" choice instead, and that fails as well.

Additional info -

The virtual machines are as follows:  1: Domain controller  2: File and App server  3: Exchange 2010 server

I have this entire configuration working fine in a lab setting, but I can't get this to work in my customer's business environment.  I have made copies of the 3 server vhd files to the USB drive for immediate safety, but want a more automated system with Windows Server Backup.  Please assist.

Hyper-V Cluster - Backup issue

Hi All,

We have Hyper-v cluster with 6 nodes. Currently I’m facing some issues with hyper-V cluster CSV backup with EMC networker. Current configuration as below.

All the servers are hosted in different data center . we are using vendor backup solution and it’s in different Network segment . we have DEDICATED NETWORK CARD FOR EACH HOST and added the static route for all the hyper-V servers. And hyper-v host can ping to Media server. But when the media server try to backup it’s not starting.

OS =  Windows 2008 R2 Datacenter SP 1

Network configuration :

Separate network card for all the Interfaces.

Management Network : 10.1.100.XXX range all the six servers

Cluster IP  : 10.1.100.XXX

Live migration network : 10.1.3.XXX range all the six servers

HB  network : 10.1.3.XXX range all the six servers

DMZ Network :

VM Network  :

Backup network : 10.1.113.XXX range all the six servers

EMC networker application cannot communicate to hyper-cluster cluster. any idea why? Is it possible to add new backup vlan IP address to Cluster Name?

Thanks,

Aucsna

No Input Captured

I am trying to migrate a Server 2003, Exchange 2003 OS to Hyper-v on Server 2012. I used disk2vhd. Configured the Hyper-V machine. Fired it up. Looks like it worked fine, except neither keyboard nor mouse input are captured. I cannot login or do anything. Even using the CTRL-ALT-DEL button from Hyper-V does nothing. CPU usage is about 3-5%, so it does not appear to be frozen. If I hover over the mouse or keyboard icons, both indicate they are not captured.

I have no idea what to do about this and can't find one single case in the forums.

Hyper-V Replica large .HRL files

Hi,

I have been testing Hyper-V Replica and all has been going quite well in a test environment.

When applying the same knowledge to a production environment i'm seeing strange results.  I have a Windows Server 2012 Hyper-V server in a workgroup running a guest SBS 2011 VM with two drives, one is 131GB and the other is 314GB.  I have moved the pagefile onto a third vhdx which isn't being replicated over to our replica partner.

Looking into the VM's, there is minimal file structure change but yet i see lot's of big .hrl files being queued up for replication.  I've been through the majority of the files on the SBS server to make sure file changes are a minimum, i.e. IIS / Exchange logs and having kept an eye on the server throughout the day i can't see any big increases in storage consumption on the partitions.  within 7 hours today i can see that i have 11.5GB of .hrl files waiting to ship over to the replica partner.  The SBS server is running on an ADSL line is being crippled due to the upload.

From my test environment, after moving the pagefile onto a drive that wasnt being replicated i was seeing average .hrl files of KB's rather than GB's.  Does anybody have any advice on where the huge file sizes can be coming from ?

This is already my third seed and i'm still seing the same problem.

Hyper-V causing "stuttering" on Windows 8 Pro

When I'm running a Hyper-V VM (which I run most of the time) that is set to use 8GB of RAM, occasionally my mouse will experience "stuttering" or lag.  It can happen multiple times in a row, and sometimes is spaced out over hours.

Machine specifications:

Windows 8 Pro

i7-2500

16GB RAM

nVidia GeForce 470GTX

Hyper-V VM is on a secondary SATA drive that is only used for Hyper-V

Hyper-V VM is using 8GB fixed (another one is using 8GB min, 12GB max -- not running at the same time of course) with 2 vCPUs and two VHDX's, fixed.

Mouse input not captured problem

Hi there,

I installed a vm of Windows 2003 in Hyper-V, it works well except the mouse cannot work. When I try to use mouse it pops up error msg and at the right bottom corner there are 3 icons, the middle one is mouse. If you move mouse over this icon it shows the msg: "Mouse input not captured" In virtaul server 2005 you need to install additions so I think something like that is required here. How can I solve this? Thanks in advance.

mouse not captured in server 2012 Hyper-V, Installed VM of Server 2008

Hi,

I recently installed Hyper-V role on Windows Server 2012.

Server I3, 8GB ram, 500 gb Hd, On board Realtech 1 gb NIC card.

using Microsoft VHD of Windows Server 2008, I installed New Virtual Machine.

Initially I was able to type using exiting Keyboard and Mouse, but VM NIC card could not communicate with Host. After searching internet, I got info to installWindows Server 2008 SP2 on VM. Which I did.

Now I am unable to use Mouse, on VM it says "Mouse Input not Captured". I did Action - Insert Integration Service Setup disk more than 3 time, Rebooted VM and Host, but problem now i can use Mouse and NIC card.

Pl. Help. I tried a lot even uninstalling/ reinstalling Hyper-V Server Role.

multiple external networks to different LANs on guest servers

I am again going through learning curve with new server 2012 product line in my LAN. I want to test the Essential 2012 server and SBS 2011.

I have Dell R510 with 64 GB with Windows 2008 available. Lot of hard drive space and up to 6 NIC available. My ISP allows me 6 static IP addresses so not an issue there.

I want to have one external network through the host w2008 (96.x.y.10) logically link to a virtual LAN with one server and test workstation (192.168.10.x) and another full external access (96.x.y.11) with the other LAN (192.168.11.x).

The LANS will have nothing to do with each other, just testing server solutions. If I can get this working I may move my old SBS2008 over to a third connection.

Can anyone point me to a good leraning site or documentation on this? Thanks

VDI - Problem creating user profile disks

From my RDS connection broker, I'm attempting to configure the path for Hyper-V VDI user profile disks on a single pooled collection. I've created a remote share and set the correct permissions, however each time I try to do this I receive the following error:

Could not create the template VHD. Error message: -2147024784

This error seems to be restircted only to the volume I want the share to exist on (remote UNC path). If I try creating the same named share on another voume of the same server, the process completes successfully. If I specify another different server, this also works.

Initially I was able to create the template vhd in the desired path, however after deleteing and re-creating the collection it seems I can no longer recycle this path for user profile disks or in fact any different named path I create on the same volume.

All related servers in the environment have been rebooted and no additional events are displayed in the event log.

Adding third node to a two node Hyper-v cluster

Hi there,

I have a two node Hyper-v cluster on Windows Server 2008R2+SP1 with cluster shared volumes.

I want to add a new third node.

On this third node I already connected the witness disk. It is showing in Disk Management as offline.

When I run the validate a configuration wizard it fails with "No disk were found to perform cluster validation tests."

From the LOG:

Disk with identifier 73588c7 has a Persistent Reservation on it. The disk might be part of some other cluster. Removing the disk from validation set
No disks were found on which to perform cluster validation tests. To correct this, review the following possible causes:

* The disks are already clustered and currently Online in the cluster. When testing a working cluster, ensure that the disks that you want to test are Offline in the cluster.

It says me what to do, but how do i do this correctly without interrupting the cluster?
Can I altually do this while the cluster and VM's remains 100% operational?

Thanks in advance,
John
