Virtual Sound Card - Server 2008 R2 w/ Hyper-V

$

I have checked some of the previous posts about this and I am still getting some mixed results. I have remote users connecting back to the company through RDP. The RDP server is Win2K8R2_SP1. This is a VM running on a Hyper-V R2 host. The physical server does not have a sound card but after a VoIP rollout I have several users using softphones. The softphones connect via the standard desktop (which has a sound card) but these users will remote in to run several apps that are not VPN or WAN friendly. Right now if these users get a voicemail they receive a copy as a .wav file in their email (Outlook in the RDP session), so the only way to hear these messages is to send the .wav file to an outside mail account (gmail/hotmail/yahoo) or to have a second Outlook session running on the regular desktop (typically using OWA).

I am looking for a virutal sound card that will work on a Server 2008 R2 virtual machine where the host server is running Hyper-V R2

Thanks,

Ubuntu 12.10 GPT partition >2TB not working

Hi!

Hyper-V on 2012.

I've got a Ubuntu, 12.10, server installation which i try to add some storage to. I've created 64GB harddrive (VHDX) as the 1st drive. And then a 2nd drive 4TB (VHDX). Thin.prov on both.

Creating and formating: Using gdisk, parted or gparted (livecd) on ubuntu I'm not able to partition, GPT, and initiate a filesystem on the the large VHDX.

Is there a problem with Hyper-V 2012 and drives (VHDX) >2TB when used by guests?

Edit: :) Typo in title... Ubunut...

VHDMP event ID 3 while running Windows Server Backup (wbadmin)

Hi

I am running Hyper-V on WS2008 R2. I've applied the registry fix for FsDepends.sys as it is suggested in http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2013544 but I'm still getting VHDMP enent ID 3 errors every time when I run wbadmin:

Level Date and Time Source Event ID Task Category
Error 13/03/2010 01:00:53 Microsoft-Windows-VHDMP 3 None Failed to surface VHD \Device\HarddiskVolumeShadowCopy113\VHDS\VM05-###### Hard Disk.vhd. Error status 0xC0000061.
Error 13/03/2010 01:00:41 Microsoft-Windows-VHDMP 3 None Failed to surface VHD \Device\HarddiskVolumeShadowCopy113\VHDS\VM01-###### Hard Disk.vhd. Error status 0xC0000061.
Error 13/03/2010 01:00:32 Microsoft-Windows-VHDMP 3 None Failed to surface VHD \Device\HarddiskVolumeShadowCopy113\VHDS\VM03-###### Hard Disk.vhd. Error status 0xC0000061.

The fix that registers the Hyper-V VSS writer is also applied.

VM01 is WS2008 R2 virtual machine
VM03 is WS2003 R2 SP2 virtual machine
VM05 is WS2003 SP2 virtual machine

The integration services are installed on all VMs.

The VHD drives are located on iSCSI connected Dell MD3000i array.

Does anyone have a clue what those errors mean?

Thanks.

Hi,

I have been given the task to add an extra CSV to a running Hyper-V cluster.

I'm looking for procedures/documents that describe how I can add an iSCSI LUN created on NetApp to my Hyper-V cluster. After this I need to created a CSV from this LUN and use it as the location for VHD files of my VMs.

Greetings,

Dropped incoming packets / sec. What is normal?

Is it normal to have between 15-30 dropped incoming packets / sec for most VMs? I'm running hyper-v 2012 with 2008 r2 VMs with the latest integration tools installed. Output queue is at 0 for the physical nics. Bandwidth used is very little. I do use vlan-tagging on the vms.

Physical to Virtual - IP Address Conflict

$

Hi, I have a physical 2003 R2 server that I am attempting to virtualise onto a 2008 R2 Hyper-V host. The host has its own dedicated NIC (172.16.0.17), a 2nd NIC dedicated to another 2003 guest VM (running fine with 172.16.0.9 on an virtual switch connected to an "External" network) and a 3rd NIC dedicated to the new guest VM (which will be 172.16.0.8 on another virtual switch connected to an "External" network).

I have used ShadowProtect to back up the physical server (VSS snapshot process) then restore into the new guest VM. I have succesfully used this process several times before. When you bring up the guest for the first time (after switching off the old physical server) you do it in Safe Mode with Networking so you can unhide then uninstall the old physical NIC and therefore release the IP address (172.16.0.8). You can then reboot and set the IP address of the guest's new LAN connection (with the VM Bus Network Adaptor) to the old physical server's address.

As soon as I do this I get an IP address conflict. The Event Log gives the MAC address of the old physical server's NIC but it has been switched off by this point! I am positive there is no other device on the network with this address. If I change the guest VM's address to something else the message goes away. A ping of 172.16.0.8 produces no reply (no reply on other servers as well). There is no entry in the ARP table for 172.16.0.8. If I show hidden devices in Device Manager the old physical NIC is not there. Devcon only shows the VM Bus Network Adaptor and there are no additonal adaptors in the usual registry locations.

Curiously if I change the virtual switch to "Private Virtual Machine Network" mode then set the VM guest's IP to 172.16.0.8 there is no conflict message. This implies that the address is in use somewhere on the network but I am sure it isn't.

Any ideas? Thanks,

Guy Ellingham

Hyper V 2012 converting to Fixed

Hi Guys,

We have a Hyper V 2012 Server in production where we have 2 disks

disk 0 has hyper V C:\ and Hyper V F:\ with a virtual dynamic drive called F:\ as well which has only 3% left which is the F:\ of the Virtual Server

disk 1 has hyper V D:\ with 2 Fixed Disks of the Virtual machine OS Fixed Disk and SQL Data Fixed Disk

Issue we have is we probably now need to convert to Fixed Disk for F:\ Dynamic Disk as it only has 11GB Free on the physical partition. How much space do I need to convert? What is the best way to do so?

Was thinking of connecting a 2TB External USB Drive and converting to this drive and then moving old dynamic disk to that drive as well then restoring fixed hard disk to existing Physical Hyper V partition F:\ where it should no longer grow and stay at 3% 11GB Free?

Will that work?

Also another question what happens when Physical F:\ becomes full does HyperV stop even though the Virtual Machine Config is on the other partition? F:\ just has the virtual F:\ drive which contains user data only. OS lives on Phyiscal D:??

Regards,

Shane

I am a beginner user of hyper-v 2012 server (core) .

I made a virtual machine with New-VM and Start-VM command in the powershell at H-V server (stand alone).

But, I could not view the virtual machine in a window  at a display monitor of H-V server.

I used 'vmconnect.exe' copied from windows8pro, but error occurred with 'APPCRASH at KERNELBASE.dll'.

Please teach me how to view a virtual machine.

Hyper V, multiple guest OS's, public IP's

I have Windows Server 2008 with Hyper V installed and windows firewall disabled. I have 4 Windows Server 2003 SP2 child partitions installed. They all have integration Services installed. They are all hooked up on a virtual network that is running against my external adapter on my parent partition. All of the child partition OSs recive IP addresses from the public DHCP server and can access external computers. However no external computers can access the systems installed on the child partitions via thier IP addresses or host names. (they show up in DSN Records, they just cannot be pinged or connected to via SMB) Additionally no child partition can contact any other child partition. Did I set something up wrong or is this a known issue? this worked fine on virtual server.

Guest OS acquire unique IP address from domain on Windows Server 2012

I have a guest/host running Windows Server 2012. The guest does not have internet access when an internal network type is selected. The NIC icon in the system tray has a yellow bang. Troubleshooting wizard problems found: computer appears to be correctly configured, but the device or resource is not responding, and the diagnostics policy service is not running. The host is on a domain network and the guest is on a work network.

I would rather have an external network connection type so the guest OS can obtain a new IP address from DNS/DHCP. I tried external network type with virtual checked in both locations. Help?

Why is cpu power management not working in Server 2012 with Hyper-V?

$

We've been using Server2008R2 with Hyper-V for a couple of years now and chose it at the time because of its ability to make use of Intel SpeedStep and AMD PowerNow!

Now with Server 2012 and Hyper-V V3, all power management abilities seem to be gone. The CPUs are always at full speed and our servers need twice the energy as before while idling. (Yes, the CPU P-states are enabled in the BIOS)

Is this by design? Is there a workaround to enable cpu power management again? Despite the great new features of Hyper-V 3, this would be a show-stopper for us since we are very concerned about energy consumption.

I have been following a simple procedure to create 2 Hyper-v hosts with one ManagementOS extensible switch however when I try to add vlans to the vmnetworkadapters on the extensible switch I just continually get an error. See below

PS C:\Windows\system32> Set-VMNetworkAdapterVLAN –ManagementOS –VMNetworkAdapterName “vEthernet (Host-Parent)” -access -vlanid 59 -verbose

When I try to verify the switch I get another error

PS C:\Windows\system32> Get-VMNetworkAdapter -ManagementOS -verbose

I must be doing something simple and it is late here but help please?!

copy vhd v export/import

Hi,

If I want to clone a vm on the same hyper-v server and the vm is sysprepped and shutdown, is it the same difference to:

- make a copy of the vhd
- create a new vm and mount the copied vhd,

versus

- exporting the vm
- rename the vhd in the export folder and changing the name in the exp and config files
- importing the vm

Thanks

Hello,

I have  3 server and these servers same resources and same model.

I want to install hyperV 2012 on these servers. I haven't a  storage device. so, I must use local disk on servers. However I need to do NFS raid.

if first server is down, I want to be able to run virtual machine on other serves.

So, I think;

create 3 vhd disk and mount on first server. One of them be on  local disk.

other vhd files stored on the other 2 servers via network path.

and I will create raid5 with these vhd files.

can I do it ? or is there another way ?

Thanks

How to access virtual machine with remote access?

I have a Windows 2008 Server with one network card. I've created a virtual machine with XP receiving it's ip from DHCP, something like 192.168.0.101.

I can access the virtual machine with remote access from another computer when I'm in the network at the office, but how can I access the virtual machine with remote access when I'm not connected to the network?

I'm very grateful for help!

C'ant install remotefx on Hyper-V core 2012

Hello,

I had a 2008-R2 hyper-v core with remote Fx installed and working. I upgraded to Hyper-V core 2012 (from fresh install). I have no success in having Geforce GTX 560 been recongnized in the Hyper-v management console. I know this board is not supported to do that but I installed the driver using pnputil with success (either Geforce W8x64 or quadro S2012x64). Hyper-V console still say there is not graphic board installed.

Compared to 2008 R2 core, I understood that nothing speical has to be done to enable hardware remote FX.

What did I do wrong: Is it simply because Hyper-V core 2012 does not allow remote FX 3D or is it that I did not enabled a service or something else ?

On the other hand every thing is working eventhe soft directx11 on the Windows 8 VM machines.

Hi,

I have 2 Hyper-V 2012 nodes, that is NOT configured as cluster. They have local storage, and im trying to move a vm from one to another, like "Shared Nothing Live Migration on Windows Server 2012, but it fails. I do the following:

Select Move -> Select "Move the Virtual machine"->"I Select the other host"->Select "Move the Virtual machine`s data to a single location"->Select a folder on the other host-> and then Finish.

I do have Write Access to this folder on the other host. I get the following error

***************************

There was an error during move operation.

Virtual machine migration operation failed at migration source.

Failed to create folder.

Migration did not succeed. Failed to create folder XXXXXX: Invalid Signature.('0x80090006')

**************************

Why do i get this Invalid signature ? The strange this is that it Works the other way around....

Thanks for help

Hyper-V 2012 and NIC Teaming, causes Hyper-V service to fail

$

I was just curious if the configuration I'm attempting is supported or not. I know that with the release of Server 2012, NIC teaming is now supported, but I’m unsure to what level once you add Hyper-V to the mix.

Basically this is what I'm attempting, i have a 1GB NIC, and 10GB NIC in my server. I then created two teams, based on the following:

1GB NIC -> Team1

     Virtual Adapter 1 = VLAN 2

     Virtual Adapter 2 = VLAN 3

     Virtual Adapter 3 = VLAN 4

10GB NIC -> Team 2

Virtual Adapter 1 = VLAN 5 (dedicated VLAN for Live Migration traffic)

Virtual Adapter 2 = Trunk (converted to VSwitch)

After setting up this two node cluster, it appears that node 1 works fine, but node 2 does not. Any VM residing on node has no network connectivity.

I've also run into another issue, in that Hyper-V and the VMM agents fail on both servers regularly, after receiving a bunch of the following warnings in the system log:
