[SOLVED] Issues With BCDEDIT on VHDX. The Requested System Device Cannot be Found. The VHDX File Used In Native Boot Does Not Boot When Attached to a Virtual Machine

Howdy,

I am trying to recover my old Windows 8 setup on VHDX and have problems booting from that VHDX in Hyper-V.

I imported an old VM, added a VHDX with Windows 8 on that virtual disk.

The virtual disk has 2 partition:

MSR partition

System partition

The virtual disk is a GPT disk with NTFS on System partition.

I am trying to create a BCD boot configuration database and am experiencing issues with BCDEDIT returning errorThe requested system device cannot be found:

How do I fix that? Any clue?

Thank you.

Enable Bitlocker on Hyper-V Server 2012 R2

I have a dell R320 I am trying to enable Bitlocker on but am unable to.

I partition the boot drive and configured the BIOS to use UEFI booting.  I enabled the following TPM BIOS options so I could enable bitlocker.

TPM  - on with Pre-boot measurements

TPM Activation - Active

Intel TXT - on

After though BIOS options were enabled I used the TPM MMC snap-in on a Server 2012 R2 machine with the full GUI installed to prepare the TPM.  Preparing the TPM requires a reboot.  Once the server came back up I ran the command

manage-bde.exe -on C:

When I run that command I receive the error, "The TPM cannot be used to protect this volume. The TPM does not have an owner set.".

I am not sure what I am missing.  Any assistance would be most helpful.

Thanks,

Joel

Dynamic VHDs Changed tpo Differencing

Hello there,

I need to increase the size of one of my VHDs and have noticed that on one of my Hypervisors (Server 2012) all of the VMs are showing all of their disks as differencing disks rather than the dynamic disks I created.  The VMs are a mix of Win 7, Win 2008R2 and Win 2012.  The VMs running on the other 6 Hypervisors are all still dynamic disks.

This is a real pain as I've got to merge them into dynamic disks again before I can increase their size.  I've done nothing to trigger the disks to convert from dynamic to differencing and am at a complete loss as to what could have caused this.  Any ideas anyone, I don't want this to happen again?

Thanks a lot.

Hyper-V server 2012 licensing requirements when used as a guest OS for a virtual appliance?

Hi,  Can one use Hyper-V server as a guest OS for a virtual appliance?   The idea is to leverage the minimal roles/features present on the Hyper-V  Server platform.   If so, what is the licensing requirements for such a configuration.  the existing licensing for Hyper-V server core seems fuzzy in this area.     If not possible to use Hyper-V server Core, then what is the recommended platform?   The desire is a  Windows-based virtual appliance platform with a smaller foot print  that Core provides.

Thanks.

Issues Running Server 2012 Hyper V's on Server 2008 R2 Standard Host

Has anyone had issues running 2012 Virtual servers (Hyper V) on a 2008 R2 Standard Host server? My servers continue to have errors in my system logs and I have to continuously reboot about every few days.

SR-IOV - This device cannot find enough resources that it can use. (Code 12)

Hey everyone, here is what ive done so far to get to this error shown in the VM device manager under device called INTEL(R) I350 Virtual Function

Ive enabled the SR-IOV in the BIOS of my motherboard Asus Z10PE D8 running the latest Bios version

I am using an SR-IOV capable Ethernet card I350-T4 Intel OEM

Ive installed the latest intel driver on the Hyperv host and VM

Ive enabled the SR-IOV feature at the driver level on the host under device manager > network card properties> Advanced > virtualization

Ive created a Virtual switch with SR-IOV enabled

Ive added a network adapter to the VM pointing to that SR-IOV enabled switch and under the VM network adapter menu Hardware acceleration, enabled SR-IOV there too

When I add the network card, the device called INTEL(R) I350 Virtual Function #3 shows up in the VM as well as the MICROSOFT Hyper-V Network Adapter

The virtual function device has a warning symbol under device manager, it says: This device cannot find enough ressources that it can use. (Code 12) If you want to use this device you will need to disable one of the other deivces on this system

Any ideas what I am missing? I read online that some motherboard manufacture only enable SR-IOV on specific PCI ports, I looked at my motherboard documentation and there are no mention of this anywhere, only talks about the ENABLE DISABLE option in the bios that ive already enabled

And yes, the host and VM was rebooted multiple times during and after :(

I just purchased a CyperPower UPS and attached it to my Del T110 so it will shutdown the Hypervisor after 5 mins of losing power. But what about the running VM's? Will they all gracefully shutdown and will they just TURN OFF?

I am running Windows Server 2012 R2 standard on a Dell T110 32 gb 2 nics

2008 R2 VMs on 2012 R2 Hyper-V Hosts show unidentified networks or non-domain networks(ie network #)

Starting last week, I have 3 2008 VMs on a 2012R2 Host that will loose its connection to our domain ( ie cant ping or RDP).  All 3 servers have static IP address.  Now I can  make a change to the virtual adapter and reboot and then reassign the static IP and the server will connect to the domain network and will be fine until the next morning.

These servers were migrated via SCVMM about a month ago and have been fine tilll a week ago.

I have made changed to the Host virtual network switch with no affect on this maddening behavior.

The 2012 Host has 4 NICs in a team.

Thanks in advance!

How can I enable replication for my Guest Cluster that uses shared .vhdxs?

Hi.

I have just tried to enable replication on my Guest Cluster and received a big NO!!

The message I get says that replication can't be used with shared virtual hard disks.

I want to have an offsite copy of my data, and a backup.

What can I do now ?

Surely MS have thought out this?

Thanks

Dear Team,

I accidentally removed Replication on a target VM.

If i also remove the replica at the source VM to recreate it.  i get the error, "hyper-V replica failed to perform the operation. Virtual machine is not in a valid replication state to perform operation".

please advise how to fix this.

thanks in advance.

Hyper-V Replica Fails to replicate...

$

Hey all,

Here's the details:

Site A:

Two node Hyper-v Cluster with 3 guests sending replicas to site B.  We'll call the guests siteaguest1, siteaguest2, and siteaguest3.  Replica's being sent over port 80.  No certs involved.

Site B:

Single Hyper-v host with 1 guest sending replicas to site A.  We'll call the guest sitebguest1.  Replica's being sent over port 80.  No certs involved.

Yesterday morning I got into the office and found siteaguest1 and sitebguest1 replication was behind and failing when I attempted to resume.  siteaguest2 and siteguest3 were both replicating normally.  Event logs for each failing guest look the same.  Every minute I see these two events:

Source: Hyper-V-VMMS

Event ID: 32022

Hyper-V could not replicate changes for virtual machine 'siteaguest1': The connection with the server was terminated abnormally (0x00002EFE).

Source: Hyper-V-VMMS

Event ID: 32315

Hyper-V failed to replicate changes for virtual machine 'siteaguest1'  Hyper-V will retry replication after 1 minute(s).

For fun, I disabled replica and then enabled it again and reseeded and I get the same result.

Any ideas as to what might be causing my replicas to fail?

Thanks in advance for your help.

Can't import one of the VM from Hyper-V 2008 R2 to Hyper-V 2012 R2

Hello there,

I have successfully imported 3 VMs from Hyper-V 2008 R2 to Hyper-V 2012 R2, but I can’t import the 4th VM in the same way (I turned off the VM service, and copied all VM configuration files, .xml, .exp, ...etc). The error message are as below.

Hyper-V did not find virtual machines to import from location 'C:\Hyper-V\export\XXX-01'

Any idea?

Hyper-V host server file copy paste slow in 10G network

Hi,

We are facing slow file copy paste issue in Hyper-V server. I have 10G nic on server (Teaming Done) and this server is connected with 10G switch. I have configured LACP on switch side and on server side I am using LACP mode in teaming.

Issue : When I am sending data from this Hyper-V host server to other server, I am gating around ~4Gbps speed, but when I am doing copy from Remote server to local Hyper-V Host server it gives only ~1.2Gbps speed.

Delegation of Hyper-V Management Access For 2012 R2?

$

Instead of only the two choices of full Hyper-V Administrator with unlimited access or else no access at all, is there a way to manage fine grained control of access?

There was for Hyper-V Server 2008 R2, but the article specifically says it is for 2008 R2 only.

http://social.technet.microsoft.com/wiki/contents/articles/2323.hyper-v-2008-r2-delegate-access-control-and-management.aspx

Is there an updated equivalent for what's described in that link that works with 2012 R2?

We would like to create a Hyper-V Users security group or delegated role that allows members to open Hyper-V Manager and access VMs from the console and also create and revert snapshots for these VMs, but not be able to do things like edit the hardware properties of the VM, change network or virtual switch settings or create new VMs.

Security group "Virtual Machines" does not seem to exist in Server 2008

I looked at the security settings for C:\ProgramData\Microsoft\Windows\Hyper-V. There is a group listed as "Virtual Machines". It is not listed in the Local Users and Groups snapin and if I try to add that group to the security for another directory, it does not exist. Is that an error with the Windows 2008 install or with my understanding?
I want to save the Hyper-V files to a different location, but I can't duplicate that group. I'm concerned that leaving it out will cause issues later.
Thanks.

Hyper-V over SMB3 checkpoint very long creation time

$

Hello,

Have SOFS cluster for Hyper-V servers and Hyper-V clusters.

For VM's which are placed on SOFS server checkpoint creation takes enormous time. Checkpoint of VM takes from 1 to 10 minutes, depending on VM's ram size.

The same VM in local storage creation of checkpoint takes about 20-30 seconds.

Any thoughts why ?

1 VM wont live migrate but the others work fine?

Hi,

I wonder if anyone can help?

We have a pair of Hyper-v hosts in a failover cluster, the VMs are stored in CSV on shared storage. Im able to live migrate all VMs apart from 1? It used to work ok but for some reason has stopped working and just says "the operation did not complete on resource virtual machine". In the cluster events it just says "The pending move for the role ***** did not complete" with an event ID of 1155.

Any ideas as i cant find anything?

(Theres nothing in its virtual DVD drive)

Thanks,

Hyper-V 2012 R2 replication networking question

$

My question is specific to Hyper-V 2012 R2 replication and what network it replicates on.  Does it use the management NIC, Virtual switch/Hyper-V NIC team or can be controlled?

I would like to enable replication for 2 VMs between two Hyper-V hosts, but ideally I would like to create a private subnet/direct cable connection between these hosts and have replication traffic remain off the switch/network.  Is this possible and if so, how would it be configured?  Is it as simple as using the "Allow replication from the specified servers" and adding my private server IP address/subnet in that box?
