SAN / fibre controller not working in hyper v

$

I cannot create a "new fibre channel San" in hyper V  (see attached screen shot for error)

the device itself appears to be working. I have tried updating to latest drivers, I have tried rolling back to earlier drivers.

its a HP/Emulex AJ763 2 slot 8gb PCI/E fibre controller.

driver versions tried. 2.72, 2.74, 2.76 (latest) but still only see below.

I don't know if it matters but there currently is no SAN connected to the controller (no cables connected at all)

thank you

How to programatically rename a CSV folder name

Hi,

I created a Cluster Shared Volume (CSV) Disk on my Hyper-V Setup and mounted with NTFS reparse point "C:\ClusterStorage\Volume1". I wish to rename this reparse point to give a meaningful name. I'm able to do it manually by the same process involved in renaming a folder e.g.,  I replaced "Volume1" with "CSV_WIN2K8R2_HA_VMS".

I'm not sure how it can be achieved programmatically, can someone guide me to solve this problem.

Thanks,

Hyper-V replica over dedicated network

Hi,

I just setup a couple of Windows Server 2012 Hyper-V boxes and enabled the replica of a VM. All seems to work fine. These 2 boxes are connected to corporate LAN through a NIC and each other through a crossover cable over another NIC. As I can see, the replica trafic flows through corporate LAN. I'm trying to move it over the crossover lan, to save corporate bandwith for VMs, but I can't figure out how. I tryed to setup the replica using the IP address of the "crossed lan", but in this case the replica setup fails with a kerberos error (maybe because that lan is detected as public and not as a domain one). I've not tryed with certificate authentication, but this seems to me quite cumbersome considering that both servers are members of the same domain (Kerberos seems the smarter choice).

Has anyone ever tryed this kind of configuration ? What's the best thing to do ?

Thanks a lot.

Massimo Piceni.

Dynamic Memory is not working all the time

We are in the process off moving our 2008R2 VM's from the 2008R2 HyperV servers to new Server 2012R2 Hosts.

We shut down the VM's copy the files and VHD's to the new CSV's en import the VM in the Hyperv Manager. Then we make them high available in the Failover Cluster Manager (Configure role - Virtual machine). We mount the integration tools and update the VM to version 6.3.9600.16384

For a specific type of VM (mostly RDS Host servers) we always had Dynamic Memory configured (when they were hosted on de 2008R2 platform), so we are using the same settings on the 2012r2 platform. The memory settings were;

Startup memory: 1024 MB

Minimum memory: 1024 MB

Maximum memory: 12288 MB

These VM's reboot every morning, this is done for specific reasons. But now once in a while (once per week/2 weeks) we notice that the VM's are not using more memory then 1024 MB while the demand is much higher. Rebooting the server helps most of the times, live migrating to another host also helps. In the VM we see that memory usage in the taskmanager is 99-100%, and after the move it immediately starts using more than the minimum configured amount.

Until the failover the memory usage was 1024 MB and it did not get any higher.

This happened several times. Last week we changed the Memory configuration to:

Startup memory : 2048 MB

Minimum memory: 2048 MB

Maximum memory: 12288 MB

But this morning we had a call about the performance of one of the VM's, We saw that it was only using 2 GB memory while the demand was much higher. After live migrating it to another host it started using more memory immediately.

The 2012R2 hosts are not overcommited, there is a lot of memory still available for the VM's. Those VM's never had this problem on the 2008R2 Hyperv platform.

Any idea why this happens?

Concept of virtual switches in Hyper-V

Hello I'm currently working on a project where I'm working with Hyper-V. I've come far and I've come to the part where I need to write my report

In my Hyper-V setup I've set up an external switch, and I believe that I understand the concept of the External switch in the fact that it's a virtual switch that is linked to the physical NIC and thus creating a connection to the internet (briefly spoken)

Where I fail to understand the concept is when it comes to the Private and internal switch. From what I understand, the private and internal switch is not linked to the physical NIC and therefore it's not possible to access the internet from virtual machines connected to either a private or internal switch.

So the question is - Why would you like to use private and internal switches? For isolation purposes only or? If you've got some examples that can clarify why you're welcome to post them.

Thanks.

Error failing over

Hello,

We are running Hyper-V 2012 and when we start the live migration we receive the following error on Hyper-V

NPIV virtual port operation on virtual port ()failed with an error: The world wide port name already exists on the fabric.

While on the Brocade SAN switch we receive the following error:

NPIV port 7 has same Port WWN as old port 12 with pid 0x20c0e as part of duplicate Port WWN detection policy

Appreciate your input on this matter.

Trying to merge but run out of space

Hyper V 2012, as I said, was trying to merge a checkpoint (not sure why it even created the bloddy thing, but anyway) and now Im out of space, the merge is 2.5TB, so I got no where to go here?

How do I get out of ths, can I compact them? can I open then both up and move the files manually?

Why can it not make one smaller as it merges in the other???

BTW they are dynamic discs

Strange blazing-fast IO performance inside Hyper-V VM

$

Hello!

We have just set up couple of clusters:

- One cluster for VMs: 7 nodes 6x1Gbps NetAdapters (team), 160 shared disks in JBODs, connected through LSI SAS Switch (disks are in mirrored storage spaces)

- One cluster for SoFS: 2 nodes, 2x1Gbps (team) + 2x10Gbps NetAdapters, 60 shared disks in JBOD (disks are in mirrored storage spaces too).

OS on hosts and guests is Win 2012 R2. Guests are Generation1 VMs.

Before using them in production and decide, which variant is better/cheaper/easier to deploy/etc, we want to test these scenarios:

- IO performance inside VM when virtual disk located on CSV, Direct Mode

- IO performance inside VM when virtual disk located on CSV, Redirected Mode

- IO performance inside VM when virtual disk located on SoFS

We expected moderate or, maybe, worse performance (especially in last two scenarios), bus unexpectedly it was blazing-fast and just theoretically unreachable. We have spent almost a week, searching for any explanations with no success :(

So, we're testing virtual SCSI disk (500 Gb, dynamic) with SQLIO.

First - disk on CSV, Direct mode (VM host and owner of CSV is the same node)

random write 8Kb IO:

IOs/sec: 239856.70
MBs/sec:  1873.88

Avg_Latency(ms): 0

This CSV is two-way mirror created on pool of 24x2.5 600Gb SAS disks. I just can't believe in 250K random 8kb write IOPS on this array. Other hdd performance measurement tools report same counters.

Then, when I move CSV to another node, leaving VM itself where it was (as I understand - this forces use of redirected mode for operations on that CVS).

Almost nothing changes in IOPS/throughput counters, but I see network activity on VM host and CSV owner. However, it is just 60-80 Mbps!

Finally, the SoFS.

random write 8Kb IO:

IOs/sec: 125737.93
MBs/sec:   982.32

Avg_Latency(ms): 0

SQLIO shows almost 1Gigabytes/s throughput, but Network usage on SoFS node is just 160-180 Mbit/s.

Using sqio with 256KB sequential writing IO shows 5829.57 MB/s, but just 1Gbps of network activity (it's a limit, because 10Gbps adapters and SMB multichannel were not set up).

I've tried to test SoFS share and CSV directly from host and got more realistic results:

random write 8Kb IO on \\sofs1\share1\test\testfile.dat:

IOs/sec:  4931.03
MBs/sec:    38.52

Avg_Latency(ms): 18

random write 8Kb IO on C:\ClusterStorage\pool1vd1\test\testfile.dat

IOs/sec:  2206.29
MBs/sec:    17.23

Avg_Latency(ms): 42

So, can anybody explain these strange results, when performing IO inside VM?

I can run any other test or post any specific performance counters/screenshots. I would like to understand, what’s happening before moving to production.

Thanks in advance,

Best regards, Dmitry.

Lost Network Connectivity After Creating Virtual Switch

$

Hi,

I'm at my wit's end here. I would appreciate some help getting a virtual switch up and running. Here are the details...

  1. I create an External Virtual Switch bound to my Broadcom wireless adapter (allowing OS to share the network adapter).
  2. I select OK to the "Pending changes may disrupt network connectivity" dialog.
  3. A new vEthernet adapter is created, along with a network Bridge, bound to my Wifi adapter.

At this point, my connectivity is effectively gone. I can connect to the wireless network, but Windows reports "No internet access." Ido get a DHCP address assigned, but it goes wonky after that. If I run arp -a, it might show me my router/gateway initially, and I can ping it for a very brief window of about 30-ish seconds, but the ping results are terrible, as in ~800ms, if the ping returns at all. After that window of time, the router disappears off of arp -a and I cannot ping it (or anything except my machine) anymore.

I'm running Windows 8.1 x64, Hyper-V 6.3.9600.16384. I'm trying to connect to a TP-Link Archer C8.

I've tried rebooting my machine and the router, along with a million other things.

I see something going on with the System process (NT Kernel and System) that is taking up a full CPU core. It's spinning at 100% trying to do something, but I'm not sure what. When I remove the Virtual Switch, everything goes back to normal. Otherwise it stays there stuck. Maybe that clue helps, I dunno. I appreciate any help!

Hyper-V Guest Keyboard and Mouse no longer working

$

Last night two optional updates got installed on Server 2008 R2, KB3068708 and KB3050265.  This morning, I pop open remote desktop from the machine in my office and connect to the main machine so I can do my morning maintenance on the guest running on the machine(Server 2003).  After doing this same routine for the last 5 years every workday, to my shock, I was able to do exactly one mouse click and then it would not take any other keyboard nor mouse responses.

Since my Windows 8.1 machine also got upgrades, I went to the other building, unlocked the server room, turned on the monitor, logged in and tried local.  Still no go.  Tried full screen, still no go.  Looked up every keyboard shortcut possible(since it says "keyboard input captured" at the bottom but "mouse input not captured").  Nothing, no gd response what-so-ever.  I reboot the machine, I shut down the guest and start it back up, nothing.  I know the vm is running because I can watch all the activity on the screen(including a helpful POS hacker doing a dictionary attack versus our SMTP server that I'd really like to block, but, of course, can't, because I can't type a damned thing).

I go through the list of windows updates installed, I uninstall both of them.  Do all the rebooting.  Same thing.

I go through every menu option I can think of, I do every search I can think of.  The fixes people indicate for mouse is all sorts of things to do with the keyboard in the guest, which I can't do because it's not responding.  You know, like, going to Action->Insert Integration Services Disk.  But that comes up with a prompt to continue to upgrade or repair, which...requires keyboard or mouse interaction with the guest.

Finally get a little brainstorm when I see Clipboard->Type Clipboard Text.  I open up notepad, copy a space, and am successfully able to click OK and then OK again after it says it's complete.  I send a shutdown message, reboot it, still no keyboard nor mouse.  Reboot the whole machine, still no keyboard and mouse.

I'm now 4 hours into this and at a complete loss as to what I can do to fix it.  If this crap got broken by the two windows updates, why the blankety-blank didn't it get fixed by uninstalling them?  Neither of those updates indicated they dealt with hyper-v, so why would they create this disaster anyway?

If I had the ability to do a windows+run from clipboard->type clipboard text, I could potentially work my way into uninstalling the services and reinstalling them(or using msconfig and doing the redetect hal thing that one person did when their mouse stopped working).  But, I can't even get a tab to go over, much less alt+home or arrow keys.

Finding SMB shares on hyper-V host with WMI

Is there a way to list SMB shares available to a Hyper-V host by WMI queries against the hyper-V host? This is provided that a share is not mapped to a logical disk on the host.

Unable to enable Hyper-V on Windows 10 build 10130

Hi,

I did a clean install of the Windows 10 Insider Preview build 10130.

After that, I tried enabling Hyper-V features (via the enable Windows Features). It said it required a restart and upon restarting, it gave a message at the boot screen saying that it is unable to complete installing features and is reverting. This is followed by two restarts and then I am able to login.

Please help me. I need to enable Hyper-V to install the Windows 10 Mobile emulators.

Thanks,

Hi guys, anyone know why this would happen on a virutal machine? Hyper V Host is running Windows 2012 R2, VM Machine is running Windows 2008 R2. We have been trying to identify the cause of this problem but until now we have not found the answer to it. I saw in the event log of the VM these event IDs, 51 - Disk, and 57 - NTFS. Host machine is good, no problem, no disk issue whatever. It even hosted other VMs, around 3 others and it is not exhibiting any problem at all. Please help. Thanks guys.

Hypver-v Infrastructure DAS SSD's

I'm new to Hyper-v and looking at the best infrastructure design to meet the needs of my small company.  We run a small Real-Time system and currently have 4 servers with 16 240gb SSD.  I wondering how you create HA and FT with DAS storage on the servers.  How do you share the storage to automate live migration?

How to fail over from replica server where the replication has been removed?

We had 2 physical servers and both running Windows 2012 R2 Server Standard.

We implemented the cross replication method between this 2 servers with NO SAN/NAS at all in between purely just disk on servers which the capacity can handle both servers.

Our servers as follow (as example):

  • Physical01 server has VM01 and VM03
  • Physical02 server has VM02 and VM04

This method of replication has been running for almost a year and it's been running ok.

This morning we had this situation where there is an electricty outage and set the shutdown/restart. We found that none of the VMs can't be restarted - something to do with VM state issue. After doing troubleshooting we end up kill of the replications instead.

End up running as follow:

  • Physical01 server has VM03
  • Physical02 server has VM01 (no replication has been setup as yet), VM02 and VM04

Due to all servers except VM01 are not considering a lot of update we managed to use original ones and delete the replication ones, now we are having a dilemma where VM01 (file server) are running on Physical02 as a replica at the moment and there is a data/file has been changed SO what is the best way to handle this issue?

(1) We are thinking to Enable Replication on VM01 on Physical02 and delete VM01 on the Physical01 and run the replication. It means the data will replicate again to Physical01. Once the data has been replicated ... we could do remove the REPLICATION again and then shutdown the VM01 and move data from \Replica Targets\ to \Virtual Machines and then change the path for Virtual Hard Disk in VM for Harddrive

... OR ...

(2) We do the latest VM backup of VM01 in Physical02 and restore under Physical01

What do you think? The first approach is good but NOT cleaner as such due the folder structure are messier. We had folders called \VirtualMachines (for virtual machines) and \ReplicaTargets (for VM replicata). Second approach not sure how long this will be because it's involved backup and restore.

Waiting for your input.

Can't reclaim space after deleting a VM.

I have two CSVs. One of my CSVs is low on space. I moved the VM to a different CSV. The original VM files were still on the CSV so I deleted them. The VM did not go to the Recycle Bin and I can't find it. The CSV reports no change on the amount of space. I performed this process form the owner of the CSV.

How do I reclaim the space?

Hyper-V networking VLAN issue

$

Does anyone know if Hyper-V discards VLAN's if they're not set in the virtual switch or virtual port?

We're moving from ESXi, which was running Untangle in bridge mode without issue. We use multiple VLANS and run Untangle virtually between our router and network. It seems that Hyper-V is discarding the VLAN's somewhere and just allowing the non VLAN traffic through. I can set a VLAN id on the virtual port and that VLAN's traffic will flow through, but of course only that VLAN's traffic.

All the physical equipment is the same, even the server running Hyper-V, so I know the issue has to be with Hyper-V.

I have MAC address spoofing enabled on the virtual ports.

Thank You.

Backup of windows 2012 Child Hyperv Server as saved state instead of Snapshot

I have a windows 2012 DPM server runing DPM 2012, with rollup patch applied.  Im backing up several child servers ruuning on a windows 2008 R2 Hyperv server.  All the windows 2008 child servers backup fine using snapshot, however the 2012 server running as a child does a saved state backup, it does not have any dynmic disks.

Any ideas why?

Unable to install hyper-v role using powershell script on server 2012 R2

Script1 calls Script2.  Here are my scripts:

#Script1.ps1

Add-Type -AssemblyName System.Windows.Forms

$Form = New-Object System.Windows.Forms.Form

.\Script2.ps1

#end Script1.ps1

#Script2.ps1 Install-WindowsFeature -Name Hyper-V #end Script2.ps1

When it tries Hyper-V it hangs at 10% forever:

I've installed a fresh DataCenter edition of Server 2012 R2
I've installed Chipset, Video and NIC drivers
I've joined the domain and logged in as a Domain Admin

Any ideas?

EDIT: I've debugged this down to the fewest commands it takes to reproduce the failure.  For some reason the $Form line is the culprit.  Why can't I create a form and then call another script?!!
