Hyper-V cluster nework - virtual switches or physical NICs?

$

Hi,

I have a nested Hyper-V 2012 R2 server, just to practise configuring a cluster (not for production use). I've looked at the link below to configure networks, but I am a bit confused whether these should be Hyper-V switches or the actual physical NICs only? I would guess that the VM traffic network would be a virtual switch, so it can actually be used by VMs.

https://technet.microsoft.com/en-GB/library/dn550728.aspx?f=255&MSPPError=-2147217396

Also, would it be a bad idea if the management and vm traffic networks were on the same subnet? As both are for RDP etc.

Thanks

Generation 1 or 2 disks

We are about to migrate from VMware to Hyper-V.  We are having a debate on whether to use Genteration 1 or 2 disk.  I have been reading there are some issues - Gen2 only suppost Serve 2012r2 and windows 8. also there are some issues with SCVMM.

It would be intresting to hear some views on this topic and maybe some up to date links on this topic based on people experiences

When is Microsoft going to pucblish tools for Windows 2008 R2 and Windows 2012 servers that function similar to RSAT?

We use a lot of the "old school" tools simply because we have found no updated tools to use for system admin or audit functions on Windows 2008 R2 and Windows 2012 servers. Most of the functions now are outdated. When is Microsoft going to publish tools we can use for the newer servers?

Hyper-V performance monitoring

Hi,

Whats the best way to monitor Hyper-V guest performance.

We got a system spread across application servers, sharepoint servers and SQL servers on various Hyper-V hosts performing very poorly and need to identify the culprit.

Bidirectional Replica Between Local Hosts

Firstly, the only goal for this setup is to have a quick way to have all VMs up and running in the case of a hardware failure on either host.

Is it possible to have VMs 1,2, and 3 running on host A while replicating to host B and have VMs 4, 5, and 6 running on host B and replicating to host A? In other words, does each host need to be either Primary or Secondary or can each host be both?

ODX on Dell MD 3XXX Storage will corrupt the VHDX

I have found that the latest version of the Dell MD Storage has ODX on by default. When using the storage migration with this turned on the VHDX files transfer instantly between the LUN's but the VHDX is corrupt and causes the Virtual Server to blue screen and then to never boot again.  I have yet to find a way to recover any data.

My current work around is to disable ODX on the array itself which means that the data is transferred by the hosts, but does not corrupt the VHDX files.

show storageArray odxsetting;

set storageArray odxEnabled=false;

With first generation all works fine and I was able to boot Ubuntu from differencing disk, but with second generation I got: Bool Failed. EFI SCSI Device.

Ubuntu is installed with UEFI (checked with this simple tests) boot and loads normally.

Secure boot in Frimware is turned off

hyper-v server 2008 r2

Hallo

I really hope somebody got a solution.

We've been running server with 2008 R2 for the last year or so, I configured another customer server and then realised our server has been setup in the wrong Raid configuration.

The server was running a couple of Hyper-v machines, I then decided the easiest will be is to create a vhd from the physical machine and reinstall Windows, all good and well and the remounted the old vhd machine to the new server.

The previous main server was now a vhd and created a new virtual machine of the main server, I deleted all the vhd machines on the main server hyper-v folder.

There is two problems now, the old main server had a virtual network which I cannot get rid of, the second is that doesn't matter what I do I cannot get the new Virtual network to work in the vm.

I tried unistalling hyper-v feature in the vm but then it only restart and get stuck in Preparing to Configure Windows, do not turn off your computer.

All I need is to be able to get the virtual network to be reconized in the main server vm.

Hope above make sense, some help will be much appreciated.

Stuck without the main server vm all the information is locked inside.

Best Regards,

Jacques.

Hyperv-V 2012 R2 Failover Cluster questions

Hi,

I've built a Hyper-V cluster. It all looks good, but just one question I had: If I want to have granular control on which NIC  (and thus IP) is used to communicate to the ISCSI target, how could I do this? In the target settings, I chose the DNS name for the initiators that connect to the target, but the initiators (i.e. Hyper-V nodes) have more than one IP address.

Also, the nodes have 8 NICs but I only see two network connections in Hyper-V Manager?

Thanks

Unable to enable Hyper-V on Windows 10 build 10130

Hi,

I did a clean install of the Windows 10 Insider Preview build 10130.

After that, I tried enabling Hyper-V features (via the enable Windows Features). It said it required a restart and upon restarting, it gave a message at the boot screen saying that it is unable to complete installing features and is reverting. This is followed by two restarts and then I am able to login.

Please help me. I need to enable Hyper-V to install the Windows 10 Mobile emulators.

Thanks,

Ratish

Cannot ping host after reboot

I got a KEMP vlm that needs to be installed on a hyper-v host that is part of a cluster. In order to install the KEMP, I need to import it on one of the hyper-v hosts and then configure it. So, I import it, rename the VM and give the network adapter a vlan id. At this point I switch over to SCVMM and refresh the VM. I enter the settings and alter the networks to make sure it is configured for the correct network. I then boot up the machine (kemp load balancer is running a linux version). I then go through the initial setup and give the instance an IP address. Try to ping and that is successfull. I then reboot the appliance and check that the IP is still set, but now I cannot ping the device anymore. I know it has probably something to do with the mix of config I do in hyper-v manager and scvmm, but what? And how should I do it otherwise?

Creating checkpoint causes VM to restart

Just wondering if anyones experienced this?

I have a customer with a 4 Node 2012R2 Hyper-V Cluster.

Sometimes performing a checkpoint will cause a VM to reboot. It's happened to both VM's running windows 2008R2 and 2012R2 with latest versions of integration tools installed.

Anyone ever seen this behaviour?

Thanks

Gil

Virtual domain controllers on HA cluster

Hi!

Is it safe to use virtual DCs on 2 node HA Hyper-V cluster?

I mean that cluster nodes are domain members and in case of restart both nodes they start before DCs start when ADDS is not available yet.

Is it ok?

Lost network connection

I have a Dell Poweredge R310 that has Server 2008 R2 installed with Hyper-v.  the network card is part of the system board, and has two ports.  Only one port is connected to the network, and the other port is disabled in Windows.  I don't have an extra network jack to conncet the other port to.

I have installed a Server 2008 R2 guest OS, and now I get intermittent network connectivity on both the host and the guest.  Basically either the guest will have a good network connection, but the host will be limited, or the host will have a good connection and the guest will say unidentified network.  The guest has a static IP address.

When I installed Hyper-v, I assigned the virtual network to the network port that is connected to the network.  I have been reading some of the best practices, and it says that two nics should be used.  Since I cannot connect the second network port to the network, is there a way to configure this so it works better.  Not I have another Dell server with two network ports, with only one connected to the network and the network works fine on the host and guest.  Thanks.

Two node hyper-v cluster - Failover issue

$

Hello

I have configured two node Windows Server 2012 R2 hyper-v cluster. Please see the below details.

Node01
Windows Server 2012 R2 (Fully updated)
NIC1-172.16.0.55/8 (LAN)
NIC2-10.130.1.55/24 (Heartbeat)

Node02
Windows Server 2012 R2 (Fully updated)
NIC1-172.16.0.56/8 (LAN)
NIC2-10.130.1.56/24 (Heartbeat)

Both servers connected to HP 2040 SAN and have fiber connectivity. Heartbeat network is directly connected. (Not via switch/Server to Server) Cluster configuration wizard also has no any errors.

Live migrations and Quick migrations are working fine with the Failover Cluster Manager. (GUI) The only issue is when I try to test the cluster with disconnecting network (physically removing network connectivity from Nodes) migrations doesn't work. After some of studies I noticed that the issue is only happening to the node which the Disk witness quorum is not attached.

eg.

  • If the Quorum disk is attached on Node01 and If I unplug the network on Node02, Virtual Machines on the Node02 is migrating to Node01 without any issue.
  • If the Quorum disk is attached on Node01 and if I unplug the network on Node01, Virtual Machines on Node01 does not migrate to Node02.

Please assist me to fix this issue.

Thank You
Dammz

We have Win2012R2 hyper v cluster and guest file server cluster in it. Hyper-v cluster use SAN as shared storage. Gust file server cluster use shared vhdx on csv as data disk with user data. How to backup that data vhdx out of SAN using Windows server backup? Can external USB disk can be used for incremental backup or it need another shared storage ?

Can't reclaim space after deleting a VM.

I have two CSVs. One of my CSVs is low on space. I moved the VM to a different CSV. The original VM files were still on the CSV so I deleted them. The VM did not go to the Recycle Bin and I can't find it. The CSV reports no change on the amount of space. I performed this process form the owner of the CSV.

How do I reclaim the space?
