Hi,

Just built a Server 2012 R2 Hyper-V failover cluster connected to Equallogic 4110 storage arrays with latest firmware and HIT kits.
When creating a clone or vm from a template we see that the cluster loses access to the storage csv volume that is hosted on the equallogic storage with the following errors:

Cluster Shared Volume 'Volume1' ('CSV Disk1') has entered a paused state because of '(c0000435)'. All I/O will temporarily be queued until a path to the volume is reestablished.

Can anyone shed any light onto this issue?

Full details below:

Hi All,

we have windows 2012 Hyper-V (in clustered environment) in place on have few guest machines, one of the guest machine (guest machine is windows 2012 R2) went down unexpectedly two days before then we started it manually.

on guest machine we have found event id 41 after searching in the net we got the below article describing the issue.

http://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/2028504#method3

on the same host machine rest of the guest machines working fine without any issues.

My query is below:

Is any event id generated on the hyper-v host when the guest machine shutdowns unexpectedly or graceful shutdown.

Please suggest

Hyper-V Extended Replicas

Hi, we have Hyper-V Extended Replicas that for some reason quit replicating and when we go in and try to get them to replicate they never catch up. Is there something we can do or do we have to start all over again with new extended replicas for each server, this is at an offsite location and some servers have several TB of data. If we have to start over, which we have done in the past, we have to export the replica to external disk then physically take it over to the site, plug it in and do an import. Is there another solution?

Schedule Snapshots Rotation

Hello,

I have two Hyper-V servers running Replica feature, it is working great, but it only protects me from hardware failure.

Now I want to have snapshots enabled for quick rollbacks (and full backups for more restoring options, but that's for later).

I found this script which describes how to schedule a snapshot each 7 days: https://support.managed.com/kb/a1872/how-to-automatically-rotate-hyperv-snapshots.aspx

From what I understand, it will rotate the Snapshot each 7 days, creating a new one and deleting the previous... but I am looking for something more complicated.

What I really wanted was having a snapshot each 7 days, just like that example, but keeping the last two weeks, and also have a new snapshot daily. So I would always have three separate snapshots instances (2 weeks old, 1 week old and "yesterday"). If I notice performance degradation, I will only keep 2 snapshots (1 week and 1 day old).

Does anyone know how to do it?

Thanks,
Rafael

On A Budget - Options for Using a File Server.

Hi - I have this relatively old 2008R2 file server (8GB memory and 25TB disk) I'd like to use as file storage for a SQL Server VM.  The network is a 1GB switched configuration.  The VM resides on relatively new hardware (Server 2012, SAS) but doesn't have a lot of disk.  I'd like to make a bunch of the file server space available for SQL Server Data (2008R2) - its a small network (10 users) that we want to load a bunch of glob data indexed by a few keywords as reference.  Kind of like a GIS database.  My first thought is to create fixed vhdx file on the file server via Hyper-V manager, but this takes days to initialize for the size I'm thinking of (10TB).  I created an expanding disk and it was pretty quick to create.  I copied a 4GB file over the net to the mounted (from the Hyper-V Host) vhdx file and it went pretty fast.  I thought about using the iSCSI trick to attach it to the SQL VM (turning the file server into a SAN sort of?), but I'm wondering if this is overkill.  I'm just looking for a few suggestions.  There is a lot of stuff out there, some of it conflicting, about storage configuration.

Thanks

Virtualising a 2008 Server to DR site

Hope someone has an easy answer to this...!

I have a Windows 2008 SP2 server (physical) that houses a critical SQL database and Apache Server. What I want to do is have another server at a DR site with Server 2012 r2 preferably and have a Virtual machine setup that will replicate the Windows 2008 server. I want to do this without changing anything on the physical server now.

I have looked at Double Take availability but the target DR server has to be 2008 sp2 as well. I just want the simplest way to do this where if the 2008 source goes down they can continue working at the DR site if need be. What do you suggest?

How to move virtualized DC between 2008R2 Hyper-V host and 2012R2 Hyper-V host ?

Hello everyone!

I have two hardware servers, one is 2008R2 Hyper-V host and another one is 2012R2 Hyper-V host.

I need to move virtualized DC (2008R2 Server, FSMO roles) from 2008R2 host to 2012R2 Hyper-V host.  As far as i know export/import is not correct way to do such move of DC between Hyper-V hosts.

There are couple of other different opinions on forums about it, like shutdown the VM, copy .vhd file and recreate VM, etc, etc...

Which way to do it is valid?

Thanks in advance and sorry from my ugly english (not my native language).

hyper-v could not make replica virtual machine a clustered resource

An Exchange server that was previously being replicated to a DR cluster can no longer be clustered. The Server had some disks expanded, this caused the replica VM to stop syncronising. The replication was removed, the vhd disks and folder on the DR were deleted and replication was then initiated again. The error "hyper-v could not make replica virtual machine a clustered resource" occured at the finish. There is ample room on the dr cluster, but no further information on why the creation of the replica VM cannot be completed. I am a bit suck on knowing how to proceed with this issue. Disable guest aplication interaction during Host level backup

Hi,

I have a 3 nodes Hyper-V Cluster, the hosts are Windows 2012 R2 Datacenter.

Some of my guests are Windows Server 2008 R2 with Exchange 2010.

When i backup the Exchange VMs the guest is aware of the backup and it flush the transaction logs.

I want to disable this feature. Every solution I found refers to this KB:

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/975354

but this KB refers to Windows Server 2008 R2 Hyper-V host, I'm not sure that it applies also to Windows 2012 R2 Hyper-V hosts.

Is there somebody that tried on Windows Server 2012 Hyper-V host? Does it still apply?

VSS snapshot of VM in a SMB3 Share over a second nic

$

Hi all,

we are currently implementing a backup solution to back up our HyperV2012R2 Failover Cluster VM's. The VM's have their disks on a 2012 R2 StorageSpaces Server shared via SMB3. The 'file server vss agent' service is installed on the storage system.

The HyperV host has several nics.

-One 1Gbit nic for management. The Host is registered in AD with this nic and the DNS entry points to his DNS name 'server.domain.local'

- One 10Gbit nic for the SMB Storage traffic in another subnet. The storage machine has a second Name who points to the ip of the 10G nic 'storage.domain.local'

- Other nics for cluster communication and VM traffic

The VMs are configured with the 10G name of the storage server and everything works well with hyperv.

Everytime i try to back up a machine (via the Software or with the Shell on an Hyper-V Host via DISKSHADOW) there is the following error message:

--------

DISKSHADOW> add volume \\storage.domain.local\vms01\server01

The provider does not support volume shadow copies for this volume in this context.
You must either change the context or add a different volume.
Note that changing the context might cause existing volumes in the shadow copy set to become unsupported.

--------

When i use his AD DNS name it works:

--------

DISKSHADOW> add volume \\server.domain.local\vms01\server01

DISKSHADOW> create

....

--------

Am i missing something? Has anybody an idea what the problem could be? Do I have to register the second name or nic in the storage server system or in the VSS providers?

Thank you for any help!

Hi,

Anyone successful in using LLDP on a microsoft Windows 2012 R2 Datacenter edition ? When I enable it via

Ethernet card -> Properties -> Client for Microsoft Networks --> Install -> Protocol --> LLDP , I hit the error

"Could not add the requested feature. The error is : the system cannot find the file specified. ".

My system32 does not seem to have the MSLLDP.sys.

Tried to use the install iso and still not able to find it. Any place I can download it from ?

Saved state is not backuped in HyperV backup for Win2012R2

I am trying to backup Win2012 R2 VM on my Win2012 R2 hyperv host using VSS.
Before starting backup my vm is in Saved status.
But after backup I cant find saved state file *vsv and *bin file in the backup so I am loosing whatever contains I have in saved state.

Its working fine on Win2008. Is there any change in VSS/Saved state behavior in Win2012R2?

hypervbackup is the utility  I used to run backup.

Thanks In advance. Please let me know if more details are required.

Slow VM performance 2012 R2

$

We've been having issues lately with slow VM performance on our 2012 R2 hosts. I'm curious if anyone else is encountering these issues or has any suggestions for resolution.

The slowness seems to occur when first logging into a VM either via RDP or Console. It takes awhile for the desktop to load and everything seems sluggish. Eventually after a few minutes the VM seems to become more responsive. When checking resources for the VMs the CPU and memory being used seem to be fine and it does not seem to be due to any strain on the VM. The hosts have plenty of resources as well with over 100GB of RAM free, the CPU ratio is 1:1 or less on the hosts, and CPU usage is usually 16% or less. The BIOS settings on the hosts have also been adjust so there are no c-states being used and speed-step has been turned off.

Is anyone else experiencing this? Any thoughts on what may be causing this?

Shrink VHD

I'd like some feedback for the situation I have found that I need to fix please.

I inherited a 4 year old system setup by someone who never installed Hyper-v before. The host is 08 r2 and was setup with fixed size VHD's running SBS 2011 and a Data server taking all the space on the drives so there is no room for VSS to run and the O/S partition is set to 50GB. The host is under powered and I have very little storage - nill! The VHD's do have room to be reduced by a significant amount which would then allow the VSS to run and then could back up the host properly. This is a production system so I don't have the time to take it down for hours

What are my options?

Thanks!

Excuse my english, please.

Highest performance host-to-client I/O?

$

0

Is there any documentation available explaining how to hook into Hyper-V for high-performance bulk I/O between the host and the client? I would prefer as little overhead as possible... ideally this would be a standard API to hook into (even nicer if this could be user-mode on both client and/or host).

So far, it looks like the standard approach is for the client to use the serial port that the host software can then open as a named pipe. I did find mention of problems with this methoda few years ago. Also, I am not sure if this can match the I/O achieved by something like Guest Services file copy.

Thanks in advance for any time invested in a response!

How to store and protect sysprepped VHD from accidental changes?

$

I'd like to create a Server 2012 R2 server template with all Windows updates installed, then sysprep it and copy it to create new servers as needed.  It needs to be conveniently accessible, yet protected from unwanted changes.

We do not have VMM.

What are options? Change permissions of the file to read-only?

I was thinking of zipping the file and then anyone who needed to access the VHD could extract it and the original zipped file would always still be there.

What is the best way to do this?
